Hello, greetings from Glasgow Scotland, just got a new Tohatsu 9.8 yesterday, had one i sold with an earlier boat and i kicked myself for letting it go so i treated myself to a new one, they really are fantastic motors, great demo on the prop change very informative.
Great video Eric I am thinking of doing the same thing with my motor also I have heard of something called a permatrim witch is supposed to help these little motors get on the plane well and stop cavitation
Thank you! Hydrofoils I think those are called. They help get in place and reduces all of that water splashing around. At the moment since I use lightweight inflatables, I don't think I'll need one.
@@ErickMartinSucre My first Zodiac(12 ft) with 9.5 Evinrude would ventilate until I put hydrofoil on motor. I think it had something to do with way the bottom of transom was shaped. My current boat(Saturn) doesn't have that problem but I had to put motor a little higher on transom to get best mph.
Hi! Your old prop seems to have signs of cavitation problem with all that wear. I used the same engine on a takacat inflatable a couple of years ago. It has alot of power but can be tricky to get optimized. Perhaps try cupping the prop and elaborate with the trim angle :) Like your videos and positivism! Have a great day

So your OEM is 7.5 pitch and you wanted to go to 8.5 pitch and have a better hole shot, isnt it the other way around? if you go up in pitch like you are, my understanding is that your RPM's will drop and your overall speed should increase. If you were to go down to a 6.5 as an example it would increase rpm, have better hole shot but lower top end, anyone else agree to that? I would also put an RPM gauge on the engine to see what the OEM prop is giving you.
Ok, an 8.5x9 will be a heavier prop, so there is a chance that it may not get into plane, however, if it does work, you may go faster. I find the factory prop to be more than enough, but that's me personally.
The original game me 19mph with hydrofoil on it. That was the 8.5x7.5 one. I put the 8.9x8.5 one on it but have yet tried it with the hydrofoil. I rekon it'll give me about 21mph. I will know once I take it in the water.

I am glad you asked. I used to own a 2.3hp Honda, and unfortunately there isn't a way to make it faster. The displacement on those little motors is too small.
you can install a suzuki Df3.5 carburetor. 3.5 may plane with 140kg/300lbs total weight. (boat+engine+captain+other stuff) if the weight is above that, I wouldn't waste money on a carburetor or a propeller.

I would imagine it it best to be a bit conservative to save some torque for getting back home into a strong headwind also.
Yup! I was tempted to get the bigger one, but I sometimes have to fight swells and wave and having some torque helps a lot.

More speed is what I want, but it seems it may be my boat's structure that limits my speed.
The 3 options he talks about references an 8.9 inch diameter but the higher the pitch the more water the blades move

I ended up going back to factory because it bogged down the engine. If I was using smaller or lighter boat, it may have helped.

2.5*25mm and 2.5*40mm both fit
The 25mm one is the easiest to place and replace.
