53 years ago today, my late wife and I bought this on our way home from our wedding reception, then sat by the firelight in our first little home listening to it . I'm off to the same now.
This was my grandmother's favourite song, and she always used to wish she could be reincarnated as an albatross, just gliding through the skies forever more, so we played it at the end of her funeral and it was the most beautiful moment.
Also my Dad's favourite song which he chose for his funeral which was held on March 23 2020. Wonderful memories of sitting in our 1970s living room listening to Dad play it on the guitar. Exquisite. ♪

@@liarborisjohnsom4136 Don't forget Danny Kirwan also, without whom Peter Green said he wouldn't have been able to make this record. Sadly, he seems to have been largely forgotten about. A prodigy if there ever was one.

RIP Peter! Your music changed my life. This song was a lifechanger for me. Now @ 43 enjoying life, and put my bad period behind. Cheers, mate. Let god enjoy your guitar skils
Rest in peace, Peter Green. One of the truly greats! Music as we know it would not have developed the way it did without your tasteful, soulful songs and performances. ❤️🙏
I was 17. living in London. Great! What a time. My lead guitarist was a phenomenal 15 year old whizz kid who later went on to great things in LA himself. I heard this song and went nuts. I have no ear but I figured this one out on my own. Called my guitarist and said " Guess what I just figured out? " He said " No way" so I played it to him over the phone. The rest is history. Thank You Peter for all the memories and all the Great Music. Yes, I know, later line-ups went on to greater commercial success but.....
I was with PeteR when he wrote Albatros, his inspiration was THE Ralph Vaughan Williams composition, “the lark ascending” one of his favourite pieces of classical music. He wanted to write a piece of music that captured the grace of a bird in flight. He succeeded. Bless you Peter, RIP.
I am a huge fan of the original/early Fleetwood Mac (well, actually, through Heroes) but especially the Green-Kirwan era. Thanks for sharing that revealing detail - I also love Vaughan Williams, so it all makes sense to me.
Remember this tune in late 60's, when l was young, carefree and the summer sun was warm and the beer cold and the young lady at my side was so beautiful and Vietnam was just a noise on the tv !
A masterpiece, someone else said it and they hit the spot. Truly the most beautiful and moving instrumental ever. My first professional guitar was a cherry '58 LesPaul junior, the guy I bought it from said it was Peter's but they all said that in the '60s 🤣👍🇬🇧rip Peter.
Always a favourite. I was 9 years old when this played over the radio, it stopped me in my tracks and I stood silent all the way through. It was a seminal moment, one where a piece of music became part of the soundtrack of my life. I was lucky to born at the start of the sixties, and grew up through the best three decades that music ever produced.
Peter Green shone briefly, but boy did he shine. He will be remembered as a major player in British rock history. Influenced the Beatles' song "Sun King" on Abbey Road. May his troubled soul be at peace now.
@QWERTY I would agree. Albatross is a smooth and calming beautifully paced song. I cannot imagine having that kind of talent and anyone who wrote and played this has something "special."
I had my first real meaningful kiss in 1969 while this was playing in the background at the school end of term party. I will never forget Sue for giving me my first experience of love....and this song will remind me of that special time back in '69.
This was Father's fave tune! He's up with the Great Architect of the Universe now for some time! Every time I hear this tune I think he's up there in the Clouds flying RIP Pops x
Remember Greeny didn't just play on the song he wrote it as well. A masterpiece and a work of genius from a great bluesman who was very quiet, likeable and had no ego. The saddest of losses
You can tell he had no ego just from this video. He is actually behind the drummer. If you did not know, you would think he is Kirwan. Also, he insisted the band be named after Mick and John (which I know you know).
I was lucky growing up as a kid in Toronto. The DJ's on CFNY and CHUM FM were amazing and introduced this piece to us. I would never have known about it.
Loved this since I was a child, primary school assembly used to play it and also remembered from Hart program in the 70s 80s,now trying to play on guitar, RIP Peter Green I will always remember you 🎸🎸
The piece of music we played at my dad's funeral. He was a child/ teenager of the 60s and an avid record collector. He lapped up music from his home nation of Britain, especially early Fleetwood Mac, and loved a lot of US artists too. This was the song he always told us he wanted for his funeral. Glad we got to make your wish come true, dad. Miss you x On another note, this piece is truly beautiful - it conjures up this feeling that, no matter what shit deal you experience in your lifetime, that the release of your consciousness from the confines of your physical body and back out into the ether upon death must be intensely blissful. To me, this piece of music is like that experience in music form. So peaceful, balmy, like you're on the most pristine Hawaiian beach with not a care in the world - removed from the societal pressures, emotional pain and the general restrictiveness that can occur with the human experience.
I listen to this over and over again, I think of my son who recently passed away. I sit at the beach and silently listen to this. And then I feel better.
RIP to one of the great guitarists of all time and yet ranked only no 58 in the Billboard top 100 greatest guitarists when he should have been one of the top ten! BB King recognised him as the guitarist with the sweetest tone.
