EDEN's debut album should appeal to fans of the James Blake strand of alternative R&B, but it's not really doing much for me.

EDEN - VERTIGO / 2018 / ASTRALWERKS / SINGER-SONGWRITER, ALTERNATIVE R&B, GLITCH POP
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
EDEN sounds nothing like Ed Sheeran lmao, I'll take James Blake or maybe Bon Iver but not Ed Sheeran
Yannick V
Accurate ^
He definitely has some modern day sentimental-pop influences which is pretty much what Sheeran embodies.
Gold sounds a lot like Love Yourself - a song written by Sheeran
Especially the chorus. No hate though, I love EDEN.
i mean sort of the same appeal ish?
Who remembers The Eden Project?
how good was xo thooooo
Man, I loved songs like Better Together (without the obnoxious EDM drop).
The memories with scribble in the background. Better times
Yes, I used to be really into it. Especially remember Kairos
Donald Trump legit was gonna talk about the spab project lmao
i think end credits ep would appeal a lot more to anthony
DiamondDeathMC Bachi ...Or mabye his eden project stuff, that was some of his best work, hands. down.
cant argue with that. gone, lost, and drowning are some of my persomal favorhtes
End Credits and Entrance are goat tbh
Times like these is his best work imo
super late, but "Jupiter" is my favorite of his older works
Personally, I love the album but I completely understand why you aren't crazy about it. Despite being his debut album, it's by far his least commercial project so far, his two previous EP's had some much more instantly gratifying tracks such as: Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll, End Credits, Wake Up...
I think the main appeals of EDEN are his unorthodox production style, highly competent lyricism and stellar voice. I wouldn't go as far as to say he's niche, but you either love his work, or are just kinda indifferent towards it, and again, considering your taste I'm not surprised you're kinda in the latter camp.
ooshaboy29 Yea I agree, this album just doesn't seem to take my attention as it did with his previous EP's
ooshaboy29 I just think he should have put more effort into the vocals. I get that it's a more personal project for him but the album was pretty bleak at times compared to his other stuff.
I’m personally a huge EDEN fan, but I can understand how Vertigo is not a lot of people’s “cup of tea”. When Vertigo came out, I was surprised with what came on the album because, in my opinion, it is so much different than all of his other stuff. I like it, don’t get me wrong, but if you don’t try not to give up on him. Go listen to some of his other stuff; you might be pleasantly surprised.
I haven't given a chance to his new album No Future but, I don't think he will ever top vertigo again. Not that he started to make bad songs or anything. It's just that vertigo is actually, really good. And I somehow think the songs are timeless. This album can be his OK Computer. You can see some electronic stuff mixed in the songs that adds a lot of detail. with insane lyrics, it's just somewhere at the top for me.
can't believe this actually happened
yeah like i was like wtf
gio SAME
this is crazy #edencirclejerk
I just finished watching the livestream you uploaded lol
I'm really surprised you never heard of him before. There's a whole surge of new singers with a very similar style to eden. Artists like stephen, michl, syml, jaymes young, emmit fenn, majik, shallou, jeremy zucker, peter manos. There's a lot of them and they're all getting their fame from music channels like mrsuicidesheep, koala kontrol etc. I know you mostly only pay attention to labels but if you're interested in seeing where this new movement of youtube famous alternative artists is headed, you might wanna look up some of them.
Gotta say, I listened to at least two songs from each of those artists you posted. Man, are they boring. They all sound like the most unoriginal aspects of Kygo and the Chainsmokers and they all have the same "sad boy black and white photo" aesthetic. Not about it at all.
That's fine tho, it doesn't have to be for everyone. I was just listing them since it's a very similar style to EDEN and it seems to be on the rise in popularity. But I don't hear the resemblance to someone like the chainsmokers. All of these artists produce and write their own music, so there's more of a sense of creativity. It just feels more personal, like they're deeply involved with their music and not just trying to copy popular modern day sounds that will get them fame.
''copy popular modern day sounds that will get them fame.'' but that's what EDEN sounds like.
fashion club dude please check your ears
if that's what you're hearing that's cool. You don't have to like his music. But I believe these days it's very hard for your music to sound like it doesn't have any influences, since everything has been pretty much played out. But to me, for whatever reason, artists like ed sheeran aren't appealing, and eden is. Btw he said in an interview that while making the album he shut himself out from everything so that nothing really influenced his producing.
EDEN intrigues me so much, I like this album but I'm really going to look forward to his next project like where his progression as an artist will take him in 5 years I think he will have a totally different sound
I have been listening since 2015
Well you were completely right about the 'different sound'. no future is really different from vertigo and i think you think too much of me. And surprisingly, people (including myself) we're still there, we still love his music and sound, and I think we'll be there for a long, long time
hey there, 2022 here and he just released a new album - definitely has changed over the years, but that core feeling/sound that EDEN has is still there, you can just tell it's his song and no one elses. i only wish he wasn't as underrated still
what'd you think of ICYMI?
It was a solid album, I really enjoyed balling and call me back
I'm definitely not the demographic he was going for either but idk why, this album has really grown on me the few times I've listened to it.
Review "I think you think too much of me"
Hanan Otovic lol
YESSSSSSS PLEASEEE
Although I'm really happy he made this review I'm sad that he didn't mention things in this ambum he repeatedly mentions he loves in other albums.
Anthony is the type of person that loves stuff that is all over the place with eary, weird sounds and vertigo does nothing but lack that.
I thought he'd put more emphasis on the beautiful, harsh and loud sounds, noises, glitches in tracks like icarus, start//end and crash and the breaking glass sample in float and falling in reverse. It seems like the 'Ed Sheeran influence', which I have yet to see myself, took over his opinion on the project, which is truly disappointing.
I really agree, it feels like just a review of EDEN’s “gold” rather than the full album.
I was but underwhelmed on my first listen. It's seriously grown on me though. This is a very personal album, and it feels like a grand first step for an indie musician with a ton of potential.
i’ve played it on repeat at least four times a day since its release tbh
Listen to bipolar paradise my man
I think you think to much of me. was a very good album too by EDEN
Same tbh.
EDEN is my GOAT and It's more for personal reasons and that's why it resonates with me so much, am glad you kept an open mind though, thorouglhy enjoyed the review!
DanDanTheFag
Love him
cringe
@@nevereatencake what is cringe here??
You said at about 2:25 that his audience want him to keep his music light and sweet like it is. I think he'll change his sound and keep his followers. He gained a following first with EDM and then changed to what he he is now and still retained his audience
His style isnt light at all, idk what hes talking about, the stuff eden talks about, and even the beats of some of the tracks like icarus are heavy as fuck.
you were right about how he'll change his sound and keep his followers with the album "no future"
EDEN is the first artist that has given me the overwhelming feeling of fandom that I've seen happen in younger people over my whole life. I don't think i could very well describe one thing about his music in particular that made me care about reviews being done about it. I just know that I like it a lot in a way that makes me feel/question if I've been melodically hacked
Truth
I'm really happy that the comment section isn't a complete shit hole of people saying he's a god or he's terrible. It's cool to see people on the internet able to have a civil discussion
he's shit
Ivancho Daz oh wow oh boy am I #triggered
Honestly was a complete meh album imo
jeffersuhn Definitely not as solid as I think you think too much of me.
As someone who thoroughly enjoys vertigo, perhaps even more than his previous two EPs (actually ityttmom was pretty fucking great). this was a pleasantly different view. Granted, it wasn't particularly insightful since this was a rather short review, but I see where you're coming from. It would have be nice, though, for you to mention some tracks or parts that you enjoyed and others that you especially thought were very boring and overly-inspired. In any case, thank you for taking some time to listen to and review this album!
Thank you so much for touching on this, Melon! You summarized the album in a concise way that I think was really fair to EDEN as an artist. I personally loved it and I’m really glad you can understand why
LandonRemixes loved your review of the album
Joe B - thank u
o hai
hey boi
Matt Van hey gorgeous
Even if you didn't fully enjoy it, I am glad you gave EDEN his fair share. Maybe you could check out his past EP's or singles? Not for review of course but just for your own enjoyment.
I actually had never heard of EDEN until Vertigo released, where I suddenly heard his name everywhere. I said fuck it and downloaded the whole album on apple music, to give it a shot and first listened to Icarus (i dont usually listen to albums in order). Icarus, compared to the rest of the record, resonated with me the most. I do enjoy the entire album, but the raw vocals and glitchy production on Icarus just stood out to me.
this is how i die now
When it comes to Vertigo, I personally prefer crash. But Icarus is pretty unique.
Oh my god icarus is my longstanding favorite off this album (though forever//over gets me bad too, hard to decide). It’s raw and goes so hard, I love it so much
Been following his stuff since 2014, this record is very different from a lot of his early stuff, I still love it because I've grown so attached to his stuff, and I genuinely love this record. But I think it would've been more interesting to see you take a look at the End Credits EP. That is, in my opinion, where he was trying the most new stuff, and really refining his craft.
I think it's also worth noting that Jonathon does the production for an artist named ATO, who makes some of my favorite European hip-hop right now, he just released an EP and if you find the time, you should give it a shot.
Dj746605 Definitely agree with you here. I would love to see our melon take a look at End Credits, as well as i think you think too much of me. Both resonated with me, I think a little more than this album did.
Ed Sheeran? haha wtf
honestly lmao wtf is he talking about
gold lol
i love it but let's be honest it's pretty top 40
I’ve been an eden fan for a while so I will always support him and I also really like everything he has put out. This album was 9/10 for me and I think it’s not “bland” or whatever.
My favorite songs off Vertigo - Love; not wrong (brave) , float, Icarus, and wings.
Edit: falling in reverse and forever//over are great too
Jackie Bisson my guy jackie
Exactly what I thought was gonna happen. Love this album but I don't get why y'all wanted Anthony to review it. He isn't anywhere close to the target demographic that this album is actually going to affect emotionally and sonically. Glad you didn't score it.
A lot of people probably just wanted to up EDEN’s exposure
I definitely agree with you that on the first listening, I found this new LP sort of bland and not much different from everything else EDEN has released. But after listening to a few of the songs lyrics more closely, Jon is actually expressing a lot of very personal and introspective topics, about his rise of popularity and the toll that it has taken on himself and the people around him. Specifically on the song icarus, he is obviously telling the story of how it's hard to make all of the fans happy while still doing what he wants to do. After listening to some of the songs lyrics with an altered perspective like so, I found I started to latch on to them a little bit more. I don't think this is EDEN's peak however, I definitely think he has a long musical career ahead of him, full of growth and hopefully we will see some more significant change in his work. For now though, I do admit I've always liked Jon's production and lyricism, so I'll stay in the loop on what he's up to.
Wow you actually reviewed Eden
Evs When I saw this on my feed, I nearly fell off my chair lol
Hey melon, I get that you weren't a huge fan of this album, but honestly calling Jonathan Ng an "inferior non-white" and then crying for two minutes about how you miss when Rich Brian was called Rich Chigga was stretching it just a bit for me. Still a good review, though!
Dillon Withers
bit disrespectful for him to say 'inferior non-white' considering Jonathon had to endure a bit of discrimination and prejudice when he was younger just because his mix of race
@trickmysqueese yes, did you even watch the video? SMH
@@honourjta You know nothing about what you are talking about. I went to school with Johnny. He was never discriminated against because of his race. Think before you type shit on the internet.
@@TheRrye23 lmao
Thanks a lot melon! I never heard of this album but really dig it. Thanks for introducing the album to me
EDEN did start as a solo EDM artist with hardstyle and drum and bass. So thats why theres the bedroom glitch hop surprises. He's moving onto his new style now though.
Which one of EDEN's old tracks was hardstyle?
hackjilton He was known as 'The Eden Project' upto 2015 before he decided to change his sound into more indietronica/r&b influenced.
His first works under the EDEN alias was the End Credits EP and a sort of r&b/indietronica cover of Billie Jean by Michael Jackson (which I highly recommend you to check out)
About a year later, he dropped the 'i think you think too much of me EP' which contained 4 new songs - sex, drugs, and ('and' is actually the name of the song), and rock + roll.
On the B side, there were 3 remasters of old songs he released under the 'The Eden Project' alias.
As for you OG question (sorry it took so long lol), there are a couple of hardstyle songs that Ng has made but I can't remember any because I haven't really listened to his old stuff in a while.
hackjilton grape
I knew it would be a hit or miss.
This album was much more chill than his previous stuff. I loved it to death, but I feel like End Credits would be much more appealing to someone like Anthony. It keeps a lot of the same emotion while getting a lot more intense and bold with the instrumentation choices
Isaac DiSanto deeply agree
Thanks so much for the review Anthony! Personally, I’m a huge fan of EDEN, but I see how his pretty heavy emphasis on the “sentimental white kid with a guitar” vibe could be a bit of a turn off if you’re not already pretty deep into that stuff already. I’d be very interested to see what you think of some of his EPs though. A lot of the songs on those wind up pretty experimental, and really show off Jon’s talent as a producer. Especially End Credits, which listens quite a lot like a story-built concept album. Anyway, love ya man!
i’m in love with this album and glad to see your review, this album seems to get a lot better the more you listen to it.
I've been following EDEN for a while, but I've enjoyed his previous EP's more than this album, it all very much sounded similar to one another, with the exception of a few songs. I agree that it doesn't feel as climactic as it should have been, and there wasn't really any standout track for me in this album, as compared to his last few EP's and singles that had a good sound to it, and I think it relied more on his electronic producing back then as opposed to this album where there were a lot of quieter moments, a lot more guitar that bored me after a while.
I really dig it. It was breezy and mellow but wistful and thoughtful. It’s a cool take on minimalist electronica.
Not my usual wheelhouse, but I was into mist of what I was hearing. Good shit. 👍
I was kinda effy on this album at first listen but since I'm Eden fan I have given it a chance and it growed on me after second listen and now I'm in love with this project.
I love EDEN but I didn't expect it to be your sort of stuff, I just asked cause I was curious of your opinion
Thanks for reviewing this melon, his earlier EP titled 'i think you think too much of me' is a much better project in my opinion if you were ever to check more of EDENs work out. Its around 26 minutes so not too long either
I'm a huge fan of EDEN and I'm glad you were so open-minded about his album because it is different and attracts a specific audience. Thanks for your input!
You should review Eden-vertigo
Woah! Totally wasn't expecting you to review this! I liked it more than you did, but I'm glad you gave it a listen and some spotlight!
I came to see Anthony’s latest review and nearly fell off my chair when I saw he reviewed this album. Total shocker. I expected everything he said in this video, but I’m also glad he gave it the album a chance and left with a neutral (if not slightly positive) outlook on Jonathon himself.
I personally love the more produced tracks on this album over the more stripped down acoustic ones, and I can definitely see why it doesn't appeal to everyone. To me, Eden has a lot of potential and I'm excited to see his sound develop and mature into something more
I think you think too much of me was such an amazing EP and while I do enjoy Vertigo I wish he kept more of the build ups and electronic elements from his previous music. This record just seemed a little too light and airy for me. Still enjoy it just not as much as his previous discography
never have i seen anything bad said about jonathon wtf these comments are harsh, like 'pretty bad guitar playing'. really???
His guitar playing is super simple and there's not a lot to it tbh. Not that i don't enjoy them though, they were literally the first songs i learned to play on the guitar. Still a big fan of the guy anyhow
I was shocked too haha, I guess I've been in my EDEN bubble for too long.
deepti gurchan exactly!
All of people don't understand that EDEN isn't about being flashy. He is a very simplistic artist and that is reflected in his guitar and most of his songs.
RayGunnerGaming !!!
Glad you finally reviewed a Eden project
Thanks for taking a look at EDEN's album! :D Jon is always changing a bit his style in each records. His End Credits EP was the big start of his unique glitchy vibe and his second EP I think you think too much of me was a whole new style with much more vocals and classic electro stuff which he was already working on in his early days as Eden Project. Vertigo is definitely a change of style with more "researched" lyrics and less redundant electronic production. I think Jon is still experimenting and searching for his own vibe even though he already has a distinct style in his genre. Anyaway, as you said, he has some raw talents which needs more work. :)
Keep up the good work Anthony! :)
I totally agree with you fanthony, the album sounds like a mildly more interesting ed sheeran project and something more appealing to a younger audience. Ironically I think his music has become less interesting and more watered down over the past couple of years. Thinking back to his "End Credits" ep or even as far as "Bipolar Paradise" there was so much more sonically going on which seems to have been replaced by sweet guitar licks
Finally you review this! I was getting nervous that I’d have to form my own opinion of it.
Maybe give his older EPs a listen. I do agree that this was a bit too mellow and not very dynamic, but that's present in many of his older music. Love ya! :D
I definitely fit in his demographic and probably love this album more because I've been a fan for ages. Listening to him through the Eden project and after his last two EPs, this album was exactly where I thought he would end up.
Can definitely see why you and others who didn't follow him up until now are indifferent towards Vertigo.
Liam 2V yes for people like us who've been following him since 2014 its just a masterpiece regarding emotion. It really feels like eden.
Culture 3 better be 3 hours of Takeoff adlibs
You should review his previous EPs Bipolar Paradise and I Think You Think Too Much of Me. Those are a little more edm and catchy sounding than Vertigo
Culture II, melon. I'm waiting
The hard thing about this album is that this feels like more of a b side collection for EDEN than actual first album. Some of these "new" songs have been out for years and the rest of it kind of feels like they're tracks that missed the cut for the last ep and were slightly remade for this. Definitely Good, but not his best
Nate Strother i believe the reason it seems like that is because he has actually had some of the songs lying around for quite some time, and now he’s been able to finish them and put them on this album.
Crydux Right, that's what I said lol. It felt like a bunch of b side "ideas" that he's had for years more than a new album. Not bad, but also not the best
What do you think his score would have been on this album? He seemed to be mostly indifferent about the album, as it apparently wasn't his cup of tea, but he complimented EDEN more than he criticized him I think. I'd say he would have given it a solid 6/10.
TheInvincibleCow Maybe a strong 5 to a light 6.
I think he’d give a strong 6
he scored it a 5 on rym so there's your answer
One of my buds took me to an Eden show with him and he was a great performer, incredible vocalist live. I agree that his lyrics are targeted towards SADBOYS of which i am not one, so sometimes find it hard to relate. He's a super nice humble guy tho and very talented.
The culture album is gonna be 1 minute and 9 seconds with 420 phat middle fingers on the screen while tony fanta is gonna be hanging himself with toilet paper in his bathroom
I liked vertigo, but it felt like an extended album version of I think you think too much of me. Still good, but sort of a deja vu moment w it
He's not just the mastermind, nothing on that album was done by anyone else.
I believe that makes him quite literally just the mastermind
I've been a fan of EDEN ever since the minecraft days
Max Phillips I think you’re tying too hard
Luke Wikson no go back to old 2014 minectaft montages a lot of them have Eden music
Max Phillips oh shoot your right! Hats off
Christ why do you have to be such a downer
I think this is the first time you're reviewing an album I've already listened to.
I pretty much agree with everything you said. The texture and mix on this record go a long way in shaping its emotional landscape. I'm just not sure if it's a place I enjoy being for very long. Every digital beep and static crackle form a crisp and almost rhythmic undertone for the angst filled vocals. The addition of the acoustic guitar gives the album a much needed organic feel. The sounds combined are dripping with loneliness that feels intimate . The emptiness of it all pulls you in, somewhat reminiscent of The Postal Service album Give Up. But unlike Give Up, which plays with a theme of borderline ironic hopelessness, most of the songs on Eden linger in their void of textures. I kept hoping some of the tracks would build into something larger and dynamic, but they never really went anywhere meaningful (I'm looking at you, start//end). All of that aside, this album shows some real potential. I'll be looking forward to his next release.
I like my women how I like my album reviews. Quick and raw.
I was really hoping for a review of vertigo, and this is such a half-assed disappointment of a review. You should still look into his older stuff, like his i think you think too much of me EP and End Credits EP.
That’s not really fair at all...
EDEN is one of the least accessible artists out there after dropping vertigo. I absolutely love the album, but pretty much every song needs at least 3 listens before you fully start to appreciate it. And Anthony’s a pretty big hip hop, rap, and metal fan. Most of EDEN’s audience comes in from the EDM scene. He’s not exactly the demographic
Since it's not his type of music I thought he'd focus on the things he liked throughout the album but It seems like his comparison to Ed Sheeran took over his opinion.
Vertigo is A R T , most of people like can't understand that because creatives wise they are simple.
Culture II next
EDEN's previous EPs are a lot better imo, melon head should give them a listen before judging EDEN
Joni Jarvenpaa ityttmom is godly
Yeah, his older work is 100% better
Knowing how Anthony's head works he will most likely give culture II a 9/10. The entire album is just Quavo autotune which is basically the audible embodiment of melatonin.
It's fucking 105 minutes long. He will hate it.
Gucci Mane he’s like stuff in the past that’s pretty long, thi
It's a nice album, i always find myself playing the first couple of songs very frequently
My favourite part of the album was the vocals in crash. It wasn't easy to tell there was no featured artist..
After I think you think too much of me, I really enjoy this record for taking a more laid back, acoustic attitude. I love all of the songs with electronic elements, and personally I think thats where his true success will be, but I will definitely keep listening even if he goes down this road.
Personally, Im a big eden fan. I love almost all his songs, especially songs like “drugs” on his “i think you think too much of me” album.
Waiting for that Culture 2 review
Review the Marshall Mathers LP
Do a NOT GOOD on the new migos album. Please and thank you melon.
I really like this album. A lot. But for a debut album? Not the best. But damn this album is pretty deep and appeals to me in a lot of ways
Actually liked he's i think you think too much of me ep more. The funds in vertigo seem a bit more electronic while the former has more emphasis on guitars
The i think you think too much of me EP was in my opinion EDEN’s best work. Although my favourite EDEN song, gold is on this album it still doesn’t make up for the fact that vertigo seemed a bit hollow at times. I still love it to death though, it’s got some real nice chill vibes for late nights.
didnt expect you to review this but thanks for the review
Totally agree. Although i love EDEN’s music generally, this album has a kind of blandness I haven’t seen in his previous work. Wish he would’ve done more tbh, not really his best work but definitely not “bad” per-say. If you haven’t I would maybe check out some of his EPs as they have a much more focused vibe with more rock influence that I personally enjoy more. Glad to see you review the album though.
He probably wanted to play it safe for his first album; he's done a lot of experimentation in EPs where big reviewers and such will let it fly under the radar, but with his first *big* commercial release, this was probably the smartest album to put out.
I dont think bland is the right word- perhaps listen to the album altogether in one sitting- it might just grow over you- but opinions respected :)
His inspiration is his own life many people might not know this but EDENs album came from his own personal life, and most of what he said in the album was shit that he experienced, all the lyrics in this album were sort of like he was writing a dairy, he even said its terrifying that people can listen to the album. In crash he did the female vocals himself and he couldve easily gotten a female like Leah Kelly to do the female vocals for him but he did them himself to show the true rawness of this album and show his true emotions, which I personally believe is beautiful, even tho this guy isn't that common with EDEN he agreed with what he was doing in some point of view, but EDENs fan listen to his music because of the raw and truly heartfelt emotion that comes out of his beats and voice
REVIEW CULTURE II BY MIGOS!!!
Carl do it for the culture
I’ll cut it short for ya. It sucks
j6nny I know but I want to hear him say it 😂😂
Thanks for the review! I really dug this album for being sort of "Singer/songwriter but with synths." It's not the deepest or most complex thing in the world, but I think it does a spectacular job of putting you in a certain mood.
"young, bright millennial audience" ... thx melon dad
Pinging in from the r/EDEN subreddit, thanks for the review. :)
Honestly I love EDEN as an artist but this album was a let down. His previous EPs hit much harder. Less acoustic bits and whatever and just some great electronic influenced production that felt more like a concrete album. I loved I think you think too much of me. One of my favourite EPs of all time. But vertigo doesn't really have like. A banger. Or something that hits quite as hard as some of his previous works. It's a shift in sound I can appreciate. But it isn't for me ;-;
I honestly agree. He has no bangers on their because he's taking a bit of a different direction than his previous music. I've learned to love it. Float, Wings and Love (Brave) are incredible works though, but none of these songs can be played out of context. You need to know EDEN to enjoy them properly and I think that's the meaning of the album. Vertigo, too high up. It's time to come down to the roots a bit. That's personally what I see and feel from the album.
The album had a couple of amazing tracks like Icarus, Love (Brave), and Gold, but it's not a shift in style that's the big point - it's just that these were... forgetable. It's hard to say that about someone I respect and admire like EDEN, but yeah, the album just felt lackluster. Almost as if he wasn't moving on, but felt like he _needed to_, and he just got stuck somewhere.
Culture 2 pls mister fantano
this is the Best album ever
I honestly feel that if Jonathon puts a lot more structure and more interesting instruments + an interesting idea to shape the album around on he can make something truly amazing
I've have seen Eden live, and been listening to his music for years. I can say that this project is probably his worst for me. His most recent EP, "I think you think too much of me", was incredible. I love how raw he is in his songs, and I think that he truly is incredible in so many of them. I think that he was trying something new with this one, and I would prefer that he just stick to what we all know and love from him.
futbolfrog77 You have a valid point, I loved ITYTTMOM, and while I don't find myself relistening to all the songs, I just adore the three singles he released before this album: start//end, crash, and gold. Those songs just get better and better the more I listen to them, but those songs are also the ones with the strongest electronic presence, so...
That's very true. I just don't think that they come up to the same level as "and", "drugs", and "rock and roll". Plus, Gravity, Wake Up, and so many others that are SO good from before then. Plus, Eden Project has numerous incredible songs as well. I just think that he was experimenting, and I hope that this isn't a sign of him becoming more poppy.
I would have to disagree with the notion that "he was trying something new" this album was in the making since End Credits and to be honest while it didn't hit me on first listen, I think it has the potential to become his best project. I think you think too much of me changed my life, but it was no where near as raw as Vertigo is, he even stated that he made this album explicitly for himself. You can hear the progression of the sounds he was utilizing in his prior EPs, like the distortion you on "Take Care" is similar to that of "Wake Up" and the unfiltered slow guitar on songs like "lost//found" or "wonder" resemble that of "Soul or "Catch Me If You Can" which is why I'm curious as to what you mean by the "stick to what we all know and love from him" comment?
Probably things like Fumes, XO, sex, drugs, End Credits, things with more of a mainstream appeal but with just enough experimentation to keep it interesting.
EDIT: apparently not
He adds a lot of new sounds and beats in this album that are uncharacteristic of him. I'll admit, I know that i need to listen to it a few more times for it to really grow on me, but he himself has said that he is trying to break from End Credits. This is a hard shift, for the most part, from I think you think too much of me. I still like it, don't get me wrong, but I don't LOVE it like his other stuff. Previous to this album, I never really had to "try" to like his songs, they just stuck with me instantly. This album has been a lot harder for me to get down to, and this is all just personal opinion. Still fantastic, and I can't wait to see him in Dallas again in March.
Culture 2 → NOT GOOD
Thank you, Anthony!
this guy has literally never heard an EDEN or The Eden Project song...
Yeah...
Almost nobody has...
So...?
As a long time EDEN fam I have to say this project was lack luster compared to his older work. I encourage anyone reading this to listen to his older music as well to really get a taste of how talented this man is.
Gabe Alexander same
I think his ep's were 100x better
I wouldn't necessarily say that, but I do think that his album and his EPs are definitely different.
he had me at "i think you think too much of me" and "End Credits", this wasn't my thing, but tracks like gold and start//end caught me. I'm happy you did review, and personally he's one of my idols.
i went into this album not necessarily wanting to enjoy it, because it seems nearly "emo" and almost as if hes trying overly hard to experiment and such... but i gotta say, it's really grown on me, some really mad electronic sounds throughout and i think hes actually created a really unique sound.
Wow, melon. I get that you hate EDEN but at 0:21 did you really have to say ''this is the project's kinda big debut record''??

Hubblebub Lumbubwub I salute you. Take a 4th
Its just something that goes beyond a formula. Instead of trying to find a genre and making music within that, he just produces what he thinks will evoke the emotion and story he wants his song to tell. He's not afraid to use what would otherwise be harsh or weird sounds if it helps convey it. It's music at it's very core, and because of that, if you can relate to if at all, it hits the ball out of the damn park.
If the yellow flannel stands for great albums and the red flannel stands for bad albums, then what do the blue flannel means? "Eh, it's alright" albums?
I think EDEN was better like last year or two years ago
I just enjoy I loved EDEN when it was known a the Eden project and all it was, was the beta version of this right here.
