What are the limitations to counter-conditioning? When is teaching and enforcing alternative behaviors the better approach?
Under what circumstances are punishers most effective, and why in other circumstances are they not as? What should we keep in mind when considering punishment as an operational procedure in our training? And how does mood and emotion impact its efficacy?
Amazing! Thank you all for so much information and answers to so many questions involved in behavioral modification!
Great stuff! I can only imagine the depth of the entire seminar.
very illuminating stuff, any way to get a hold of the full lecture anywhere?
Very complicated, but i think in a nutshell, punishing such as an e collar nick won't overcome a behavior that has been established. But redirecting the behavior to something else will. For example train your reactive dog to come to a strict heal when they see another dog to try to override the explosive barking response.
Its about breaking down that previously learned habbit to say react to other dogs by training new behaviours instead. And then when the dogs done it enough it and learnt the new behaviour "pavlov kicks in" which means the behaviour is conditioned permanatly. And once the new behaviour is learnt and understood by the dog thats when you can offer punishment (like an e coller stim) if they ever deviate away from what you taught them
And what if your reactive dog doesn’t want to redirect to come to you? Competing motivators…then what are you left with? Nothing.
Your dog had just learned he doesn’t have to listen to you.
Some k9s require a harder line, I kept mostly working line guard breeds most of my life including 18 years with a Timber wolf/ east german working line german shepherd cross and while you had better not abuse them these dogs need a harder hand. I am old now so keep Catahoulas, scent hounds and pitties because they are easier to handle.
great video!

This stuff is basically p0rn to me 😂
Sorry...it just can't be this complicated. I'll continue to follow Cesar Millan methods. They have worked time and time again for me.

This is high level highly specific professional dog trainer material not intended for people at home or even many dog trainers training well behaved dogs to pass AKC Obedience and Rally. So by all means stick with whatever method is currently working for you as there's no need for this material if you aren't dealing with in-depth dog training concepts revolving around reactivity.
Too many $5 words. Lost me 45 seconds in

I agree it doesn't need to be overcomplicated to such a degree that it sounds like nuclear physics or something.
These guys totally geeked out on this one.
For a couple of guys who clearly interested in how a dogs mind works and how they (and people) learn - they are awful communicators. This was all too erratic with too much if their own language to follow. The main presenter was pausing expecting his audience to answer his questions and they weren’t responding, so I guess they were confused as well??

It appears to me that this is part of a workshop for professional dog trainers.
@@gaileverett professional dog trainers or just dog trainers in general me myself I'm just a obsessive hobbiest
