  • Presented by Greg Paige, Director of Horticulture, JC Raulston Arboretum on June 4, 2024.
We get it, the more plants you have, the less room you have for new plants. And it doesn't help things when the average landscape size is shrinking, and the number of sunny spots in any mature garden only become fewer and fewer over time. But just because the only space left in your garden is under the shade of a tree doesn't mean there's no place for some really nice new specimen trees! Don't miss this Plant-lover's Tour where our Director of Horticulture, Greg Paige, will show us around the garden and highlight some of the best small tree selections for tight spaces under shade. After all, the only thing better than trees is more trees!
    Plant List:
    Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium'
    Acer campestre 'Nanum'
    Tilia cordata 'Halka'
    Acer buergerianum 'Mino Yatsubusa'
    Styrax japonicus Rubra Pendula Group
    Acer palmatum 'Bihou'
    Cerci 'NC2017-6'
    Stewartia rostrata
    Cornus kousa 'Elizabeth Lustgarten'
    Styrax japonicus 'Fragrant Fountain'
    Cornus hongkongensis 'Gekkou'
    Acer palmatum 'Okukuji Nishiki'
    Cryptomeria japonica 'Pom Pom'
    Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gracilis'
The JCRA does Plant-lover's tours like this on the first Tuesday of every month. Be sure to check out our event calendar so you can join us for the next one! jcra.ncsu.edu/events/calendar...

I do research for the Landscape Committee in my extremely large (1,967 homes), mostly shaded, heavily deer-browsed neighborhood in Roswell, GA. HOA rules prevent us from fencing our front yards. Are any of the recommendations in this video deer resistant? Thank you🌸🐝
