One thing that I think is neat is Abbot is always late, and it was because he knew he was going to die, and was probably hesitant to arrive every time

She was not having flashbacks, though our minds are trained to think that way; she was actually having flash forwards of the future life and death of her yet to be born daughter. The more she interacted with the aliens, the more she thought like they did -- in a non linear fashion.

The General’s wife dying words translate to “In war, there are no winners, only widows”. 😢

She never has any flashbacks. The entire time (From the moment she first has contact with the aliens) she is starting to see flashes of her life in the future. As she learns the language she leans to see time as they do. She starts to live time as they do. In the beginning she can barely understand their language so all she see's are glimmers of the future. By the end she starts to master their language and therefore she is now existing at all moments in her life at once. The present, the birth of Hannah, the death of Hannah, her divorce from Ian, all of it is happening at once for her. She can see it all and live it all at the same time.
The "Who is this Child?" line is the biggest moment in the movie. It's her mind struggling to make the leap and realize what she's seeing is her own life with a child she hasn't had yet. She's not just seeing it, by the end she's literally living every moment at once. "I forgot how good it felt to be held by you" ... even thought this is the first time Ian's held her she's experienced what it's like to lose him and live without him because she's living those moments at the same time she's hugging him. Crazy.

This is the best First Contact movie I've ever seen. The aliens are genuinely ....alien.... and the viewer walks through the process of wrapping their heads around it along with the characters on the screen. The second time you watch this film, you experience things the way Louise does. In fact, when you rewatch, you may notice she gives it all away in the opening voiceover 'memory doesn't work the way I thought it did'. This movie demands a lot of the audience - especially their attention & engagement. But it rewards that effort in taking you along the journey with the characters and changing the way you see ....everything.
I had a 'favorite movie' for years that I doubted could ever be knocked out of that top position. Then I saw Arrival.
    🤯
Thanks for watching. It's always fun to ride-along with a first time viewer.

An easy way to remember the Director’s name, it has only four syllables, “Den-ēē Vill-nuv.”
Orchestras, yep, definitely understand. This piece, by Max Richter, called On the Nature of Daylight, despite being a minimalist piece, is so well written that it invokes such emotion when used in the right context. You should see/hear it in Shutter Island and The Last of Us. It’s definitely beautiful. So sad in The Last of Us, OMG!🥺

the bird is basically a 'canary in a coal mine' (if it dies get da fuk out!)
Absolutely ♥ this movie! One of the best films of the last 20 years!

@@randomlyreactandreviewfirstEzy It kinda is, but it's also something that was historically done in (coal) mining. When you're engaging in mining operations, there's always a risk of releasing various gases trapped underground, or having fumes from (for example) diesel engines or blasting operations build up in a confined space. Any number of these gases can be quite dangerous. Like methane, which is highly explosive. Or carbon monoxide, which is flavorless, odorless and colorless and binds with the hemoglobin in your blood much better than oxygen does, causing you to die of asphyxiation even if there's plenty of oxygen and only a little carbon monoxide present.
Enter the canary, which due to its small size and sensitive respiratory system is _way_ more susceptible to the presence of such gases than humans are, so if the canary started acting up, that might indicate it was in distress and you should be getting the hell out of the mine shaft. Or, alternatively, if it shut up entirely, the otherwise typically vocal and energetic bird was probably unconscious or dead and you (again) should get the hell out.
The inclusion of the canary in this movie is a bit anachronistic, since these days we have various electronic gas detectors that can do the same job more reliably and which can actually quantify _how much_ gas buildup there is, but I guess they wanted a low tech backup as an extra safety measure.
PS Denis Villeneuve is pronounced the French way, so rather than Dennis, it's _Den-EE_ (stress on the second syllable) and Villeneuve is roughly pronounced as _Veal-NUFF_ (again, stress on the second syllable).

Arrival is one of my favourite sci fi movies. Thanks for choosing it.
I’ve been watching different channels react to it,
And one thing I was hoping someone would comment on was -
How on earth did they get back down after being in the ship?
Do they jump down to the platform and hope they don’t miss? 🤔

Great question I never thought about before! I noticed their feet float a little when they raise the platform. I'm guessing they're pretty much weightless when transitioning so they can probably grab hold of the railing and pull themselves down to the platform?

    • @tdeo2141
      @tdeo2141 Год назад +1

@@Steelburgh that could be one way, but I think it would be even scarier than
Going up! 🙂 And how did they get rescued after the bomb exploded… I almost feel like writing the director of the movie, maybe the scene depicting this got cut somewhere?
