Most people don't understand that she has all the memories and the love that the child brought before she is born, and that is worth more than making her never exist.

This film is an adaptation of the greatest science fiction short story of the late 20th century, Ted Chiang's "Story of Your Life" (which is, if anything, weirder and sadder than the film).
Of course we all know, though we do our best to hide the knowledge from ourselves, that all love stories are tragedies, because the lovers must, inevitably, be parted. Your parents, your children, your friends -- ultimately we lose everyone. But the gift (the "weapon") of non-linear time forces Louise to see this and be unable to look away from it. She has to choose love with her eyes wide open, knowing the pain it will bring and embracing it anyway. Such courage.

Except Louise can experience that new love with Ian anytime she wants.
Remember, at the end of the film Louise says she 'forgot' how wonderful it was to be held by Ian; she went back to feel it again.

This title is not just about the aliens' ARRIVAL, but Hannah's, as well. Louise is the ONLY one who KNOWS Hannah. She has met her daughter. She has spent time with her in flash forwards. She has LOVED and cherished and cried for her. NOBODY else does. Not even Ian. So to have Hannah, she had to keep the secret from him. It was the only way to bring Hannah to life. I understand how Ian could feel betrayed... but even more... as a parent, I TOTALLY understand Louise's decision to bring her into the world... even knowing the ending. It's a truly brilliant story.
Another couple of things: The birds were like the "canaries in a coal mine" to assure that there was good air to breathe.
Also: Hannah's "rare disease" was probably because her parents were exposed to alien atmosphere... especially Louise, who was INSIDE the atmosphere. Hannah's role in this story is vital, as it lead to Louise and the aliens understanding each other. Without Hannah... who knows if the world is saved.
Some other BRILLIANT FILMS you'll LOVE: "PLEASANTVILLE" (One of the coolest films you'll ever see) "STRANGER THAN FICTION" (A modern fairy tale with an amazing performance from Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and others) "CHILDREN OF MEN," (dystopian near-future look at Britain and the world), and "GRAVITY" (another incredible space drama!)... Cheers!

Louise does not 'decide' to have Hannah.
    That's linear-time thinking.
What the Heptapods bring us is the ability to move beyond the limits of time as a linear perception.
I believe the Language opens perception to see time as a constant, as events as eternal.
It argues that we each exist as a constant within the limits of our 'duration', of our range of existence.
But because we are eternal, we can sort of 'swim around' in the bubble of our lifetimes.
The Language presents as a circle with no forwards or backwards; it is produced as an entirety, a complete thought.
This matches the existence of each event, each lifetime, which is nonlinear, which can exist forever.
There are no timelines, because time isn't linear.
There are no time paradoxes, no timeline alterations, because there are no 'choices', no changes. It is what it is, what it ever was and will be.
Louise said Hannah was unstoppable; Hannah always existed.
And Louise can move her consciousness backwards and forwards to experience her life at any point she desires; she can spend time with Hannah whenever she likes. In Louise's experience, Hannah is eternally alive.
Louise doesn't see THE future, just her own future. And past. And present. In whatever order she wants. Because Louise is no longer held by the order of linear time. Because she fully learned the Language the Heptapods brought us, and her perception opened up.
Interesting that in real life physicists admit there is no evidence that time exists. We perceive the linearity of events, but there is no scientific basis or rules for function or existence. Gravity, yes; time, no.
A shame that Ian never learned the Language.
Yes; the 'flashbacks' feel like they're happening in real time.
    Because they are.
She is transported there. Louise doesn't leave where she is. It's simultaneous.
Abbot did save them. He knew what was happening, because he's been through it many times.
Abbot is death process; he's 'rewinding', 'rebooting' his lifespan. He hit that limit and went back to earlier in his life.
Louise enters that reverie, stopping Ian from talking to her.
She sees the book she writes.
She sees the lectures she will give and the classes she will teach on the Language.
Rejoining Ian, the entirety of the Language has settled in here.
THIS is the meaning of the film title, the Arrival of the Language in Louise that changes the world, brings peace between nations.
When the Heptapods leave, their ship(s) seem to just dissipate.
They don't travel through space; they trave instantaneously through time.
The Heptapods just move their consciousness to home and they are there.
That's why they have no environmental impact, no off gassing, no waste production.
Louise does not 'choose' to have Hannah. The only choice is how she will feel about it. And actually, there isn't even a choice about that.
When you exist as a constant in time, there are no choices. It is what it is.
"I forgot what it felt like to be held by you."
    (She returned to this point.)
"If you could see your life from start to finish, would you change anything?"
(She's still thinking in linear terms, but also testing whether she will be able to tell him and he won't leave. But she knows already he does.)
She can't say no to Ian's suggestion that they have a baby; Hannah is unstoppable. She is a constant in time. She was always in existence. There is no 'choice'.
There were no flashbacks and no flashforwards; it was all concurrent for Louise. She lives in a nonlinear universe.
I think the Language may not have even originated with the Heptapods.
There is no correlation between the Heptapod spoken language and the written Language. I think they may have learned it from another alien species.
Someone else theorized that there's only one space 'ship', that the one exists in twelve places simultaneously. And influences why the hatch opens every 18 hours.
    It's possible.
You are the very first reactor to recognize that Louise is experiencing other time periods in her real time.
    Very good!

No one mentions how perfect it is to name the two Heptapods 'Abbott' and 'Costello'.
Abbott and Costello were a great comedy team of the 1940s through 1950s. Their most famous bit was "Who's on First".
In "Who's on First" they are talking about a baseball team with players who have improbable names. It results in Costello being unable to understand what is being communicated due to his not realizing these are players' names.
So, Who is the player on first base, What is playing second base, I-Don't-Know is the third baseman, and so one. And as Abbott tries to inform Costello, they go round and round in perfect pacing.
The comedy bit is based on language and on how expectations contribute to miscommunication.
And just as Costello doesn't get that What and Who are baseball players, the military doesn't get that 'weapon' can mean something innocuous and that the statement "There is no time" is not an alarm, just a statement about the insignificance of time, since time is actually nonlinear.
Now I need to go back to RUclips to watch "Who's on First" again; so enjoyable!

@@chris...9497 And to dive too deeply... Languages of the entities. The military(If all you have is a gun, everything is a target); politicians(If all you have is talk, everything is an audience); scientists(If all you have is numbers, everything is an equation); foreign countries(If all you have is English, everything else is gibberish).. All these identities have their own language, almost indecipherable to an outsider. And the final language poke at us(the audience), is that what the Chinese general said, was not subtitled to the language of the audience.
