I understood the difference between clipping mask and alpha lock (being that alpha lock is on one layer and if you erase, you will erase the whole layer). Mask always confused me, until this video. Thank you!
I am new to learning Procreate. This is one of the best explanations of Layer Mask I have seen. Your examples really cleared up how you would look at using it. Layer Mask is perhaps one of the toughest masking attributed to get your head wrapped around. Perhaps you can do short series on each of the blending modes and show some examples of how you would use it. I know that would be huge for those of us learning Procreate.
Thank you so much for that straight to the point and not over complicated tutorial. These are the things we need to know when starting out or struggling with the settings. With these short videos and your amazing landscape lessons I've learnt so much. You're an amazing teacher and I will definitely be increasing my Patreon subscription.

Love the fact you use simple objects to demo the procedures. So many RUclips tutorials presenters are more interested in showing their artwork rather than the procedures. Kudos. However, as a 80 year old "geezer" the lessons could be a little slower. As a retired school teacher generally, you are really good. Mahalo!
This... is expertly explained, I've been using Procreate for years and still keep finding new things today that helps my art flow speed up a big without sacrificing it's detail. That layer mask part is EXTREMELY useful since I want to get into lineless art eventually and it seems it'll help me in that journey!
Great tutorial - Clipping Mask just saved my day.... as I kept using Alpha Lock and it stopped working on one layer - trouble was I'd merged so many layers Alpha Lock stopped my pen from drawing.... Re booted and Clipping Mask worked!!! Job done.... many thanks James - great gallery too
Thanks so much! I use and teach Adobe Photoshop, but now I want to learn Procreate. Your teaching method is very clear and concise. Excellent. Thank you!
Love this! I’ve been using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for 20 years, but I’ve always had trouble understanding masks. I think it’s because the shape used as the clipping mask is on the bottom of the layers, and I think of a mask as something worn on top of the face. But, then the layer mask is on top. It’s hard to keep it straight.
Slower paced tutorial for this Sunday! Helpful to the people who don’t understand masks. So for them, thanks! I’m good with masks (long time photoshop user lol)
It’s a balance, I notice that my views go down if I release painting tutorials too often, so I think I need to throw in some app tutorials like this occasionally too
@@JamesJulier-Artist Wow really. RUclips is so strange, must be very hard being a content creator and attempting to stay ‘highlighted’ or whatever it is.
@@JamesJulier-Artist Heyy i have one question i believe is linked to the mask thema. Do you know how i can block all layers (like on your example with the egg) above the basic layer (the egg shape), so that i can only draw around the egg like ofr the background? I hope you understand me. Greetings
Very clear explanations. I was wondering if there is any way to select the area around the egg in your example so that one could paint around the egg within crossing into the egg. This would be very helpful. I do not know of any way to select the area outside of the egg, but such an "inverse" method of selecting outside of an object would be useful.
These are the most clear and concise instructional videos for Procreate that I have come across. Thank you for your knowledge and effort in putting these together. I am looking forward to diving into your tutorials. 😊
Great explanation! I watched so many videos of other creators before I found this one and just couldn’t understand the different purposes. You explained it so easy and simple that it finally clicked for me. Thank you!
Hi James, I have been following your videos for quite some time. I try to learn from your landscape videos but I drastically fail when I try them out myself. How to go about it? Any suggestions?
I've watched many videos about masks, but none of them have been explained so easy, quick and clear!! Thank you for an excellent video 👌 You've got another subscriber 🙂
Amazing. I never really comment either, but I wanted to say that this is such a clear tutorial. I'm a beginner to procreate so this is massively helpful, thank you!
Hi there, so at the moment I’m trying to ink a manga/comic image in black, and I want to know if there is a way to use masks to avoid inking behind my lineart. In theory this would make it easy for me to ink a space black, and then erase the original lines so that they appear white or the colour of the background, and avoid having to erase on several layers. I don’t want to lose these distinct black lines I have in my image. Thanks!
These videos should be embedded into the official Procreate tutorials! Very nicely explained.
Thank you 🙏
Best explanation I've seen. Ive always used the first 2 but never used the mask so thank you.
Happy to help
I understood the difference between clipping mask and alpha lock (being that alpha lock is on one layer and if you erase, you will erase the whole layer). Mask always confused me, until this video. Thank you!
Glad it helped
I don't do comments, but I have to say this is the absolute best tutorial I've seen for explaining layer masks. Finally i get it. Thank you!

At last, a well-explained video on masks! This has completely (and swiftly) demystified the subject of clipping masks and layer masks. Thank you!

Ah the advantage of starting with photoshop!
