How was her onboarding handled. She should have been told during onboarding how colleagues address each other. If there is hierarchical respect, each new hire must be taught. However, Dr. Abati should not have corrected her on air. It was an opportunity to get back to HR to correct things and inject this into corporate culture. We have a slogan in my HR consulting firm “If you don’t train them, don’t blame them”.
I love you ladies. Keep going on strong.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you once again! Even if the television station has a name use policy for its operators, it is NOT the job of an ON-AIR personality to enforce it! It is a Director of Programs job or if this is a direct report to a News Director, such a person's job to address off the bloody air! I should know after all I ran a whole radio station in Nigeria before any of these people became broadcasters!

Mr. Reuben Abati took it personal. He was trading the traditional way of addressing seniors in our society. That is understandable. But, professionally, there is nothing wrong with that because they are colleagues. Globally, it is a common practice, colleagues in the media industry address each other by their names. It doesn't mean that she was being disrespectful. Profession and Tradition are two different things.

Absolutely ridiculous, i saw this incident live from here in USA, I like Dr Abati, initially I thought he was joking, but in hindsight he was actually rude to the young lady, she was reporting a very serious news ,also she was talking to a colleague , albeit a senior colleague in Dr Abati, nevertheless he was her colleague and,so there was no need for all that formality on live camera,Africa or no Africa,we cannot carry our culture all the time on tv when you are broadcasting to an international audience, using all those titles that we use in Nigeria or Africa as a whole, like chief Dr, mrs, engineer this or madam that when you are broadcasting on live tv, you simply report your news and say over to you Reuben or Isioma, or Nkechi, or Fumi and move on just like they do everywhere else, could she have said over to you dr Abati, maybe , but it was not absolute necessary, don’t tell me that is the western culture, that they call each other by their first names, yes they do, but they can be formal also when the time comes, but not when you are reporting on live tv, Japan has a strong culture just like Nigeria or African countries , on tv they still go by first names, here in America on CNN,no one is bigger than Wolf Blitzer or Anderson Cooper, their correspondents regularly call them by their first names, i am sure when they get to the corridors of CNN offices , they most likely will refer to them as Mr, but on the screen , simply first names will do , even at times most people here will tell you to drop the titles and just call them by their first names,so I thought Dr Abati was rude to the young reporter on live tv and totally wrong,he made a fool of himself in my opinion, she could have said Dr Abati, but i don’t think it was necessary at that particular time, i know a lot of doctors have a problem when you don’t refer to them as doctors, but on broadcast tv, it was not that necessary, the news was more important

Dr Reuben is naturally a very funny person, factual and principled. I came to realise this after watching him on TV severally for years. He could also be petty in his asertions and this is why he's well respected. The correspondent should have quickly apologized to him being a well trained African lady that knows our culture. Dr Reuben values, promotes and respects Nigeria's culture and deserves same. He couldn't have reacted otherwise. He respects his guests on TV so much so that I sometimes almost find faults with it. Dr Reuben is older and more senior in career to the young correspondent and she should know this fact. She's a Nigerian and reporting within Nigeria. The elders say, a child that was not trained at home will be trained by force outside. Don't get me wrong please, this is not about professional ethics but cultural values.

Your idiotic Nigerian expectation that age is more important than your professionalism is such a horrible thing to see expressed on a major television network!

That should be the question and beyond that, it is sad that these fools on the screen are mixing their culture of DEFERENCE with broadcast standards and norms and trying to impose it on others who are them and that is a shame!

I was in broadcasting before any of these fools in Nigeria, everyone called me by first name, Denis! This is how we destroy a profession, when fools like the host here on screen will inject her own personal preference into a professional standards discussion! If you do not want people to call you by your first name, get the heck out of broadcasting and go get a job as a KING of somewhere!
Until today, everyone calls me Denis, even in my own private Facebook community of thousands of people! Nigeria, respect is not a one-way street because of your age! Regardless of how Ruben felt, he shouldn't have "corrected" her on TV. It was extremely unprofessional of him and rude. He should of informed her off air and in a professional setting how he likes to be addressed. That lady meant no harm, she was just doing her job. Although they work in Nigeria, that company should outline the culture of how colleagues should reference themselves to each other. I like the point made, that if it was a non-nigerian would Ruben have done the same thing. Also all nigerian culture is not the same. Now all Nigerian know to call him Dr. Abati. I concur! Uncle Yori, for instance!🤦🏽‍♀️🤔 I can’t wrap my head around that one on a news
show! How about calling political looters and miscreants “honourable?!”, how dishonourable!!😳🤔 “Your excellency”, “all protocols observed”, “Chief Pastor Engineer JP!!” (Jerusalem Pilgrim! How? Why?!!) We so like titles! Kai! In church, it’s Sister, Brother, Deacon and so ok…..if you don’t add the title….hmm…, you’re not “going to heaven o!!” If you’ve distinguished yourself in any field, I guess your title won’t matter one way or the other. Even Prof Akinyemi calls Reuben, “Dr Abati”….maybe because he’s been in the media space for a while and has held some form of public office….or perhaps “old skool” form of respect🤔🤔 I’m aware that no title will take you to heaven o!!😂 Even HE Eliza (our very own Mama Charlie!) go be Eliza in heaven, please God🙏🏽😁😘 Respect is key. When you give it, you’d get it back in abundance, one way or another. It’s not only by titles. I could say “sister lagbaja, abi ori yin buru ni?!!”🤦🏽‍♀️😂😏. The video appeared to me though, like the lady was finding it difficult to hear him in her own noisy location and looked like there might have been some time delay in the comms device or network, that made her continually repeat herself without taken cognisance of Reubens (beg your pardon Dr Abati PHD) increasing irritation!!! What would someone with an MD now do o!?🤔😂 After sooo many years training to be an MD! Anyway! Let’s correct in love. Company standards need to be communicated clearly to EVERYONE and perhaps personal preferences also. Moving on……! One love ❤️ Shalom🙏🏽💐

I would have preferred him to talk to her in private but Dr. Abati is not like that. He never said what Morayo and her producers said he said to her. Bottom line, teach your kids to be respecful. Everyone called the late actress as aunty Pat. I call my Director Dr. cos he has a doctorate degree and l asked him how he would prefer to be called. Others call him by his 1st name but l don't.

Shouldn't the white person conform to the "culture" as well?!. It no be her (white person) land. The Nigerian reporter was not rude by any means. She was doing her job. In journalism school they don't teach you how to reference a coworker. In addition, ones " cultural" beliefs should NEVER enter a workplace. So does that mean when greeting a Yoruba coworker who is older than me I should prostrate on the ground or kneel ??????? That is "Nigerian culture" therefore prostrating or kneeling should be practiced in the workplace too ? 🤷🤷🤷. The way some people are acting as if she called him out his name. She couldn't hear due to the environment of the airport and to confirm if he heard her she called his name. His name his mama and papa gave. Therefore on the show his name on the screen, and how he addresses himself should be changed to Dr..... (that's if it's not already). Nigerians think anything is disrespectful and it's to the point they can't differentiate. But as soon as it's an non-nigerian that disrespect is no longer valid.

So, we compromise by me calling them Ms. or Mr. My children’s friends call me Mrs. Southerners in America have a very respectful culture.
