Check out Loetta devine doingher rendition of this when she was younger. I love both versions. There is only one Ruth but Loretta sings it and it is nice too.
I met Ruth Brown many years ago...when she would come see us in "La Cage" at the Riviera...what a wonderful woman! So sweet. After she had a stroke, she made a come back at a local restaurant and show club right off the strip in Las Vegas. She was there with her family and us, and there was a combo band playing that night.....when we all walked in with RUTH BROWN...they were thrilled.....even though she was not quite recovered she got up and sang...WHAT a night! She got her confidence back and the crowd couldn't believe they got to see THE Ruth Brown!! Miss you girl!!
Think Ms. Ruth might have been...double entendred....once or twice? I know that was crude and uncooth, but I just couldn't pass that one up. Best Wishes from Texas!
Saw the Black & Blue revue three times with Ruth Brown, Linda Hopkins and Carrie Smith and others... What an entertaining evening and this particular song always brings a smile to my face. RIP Ruth...
RUTH BROWN IS A ROCK STAR I have her narrating a Bo Diddly radio show from the early 90s on a cassette tape ..AWWWW man She IS CLASSY LADY ...SHE IS BLUES ROYALTY
I saw Black and Blue twice on Broadway because it was SPECTACULAR! Unfortunately the video cuts before the sparkling backdrop releases and it's the train of her gown. It knocked me out!! 😍😍😍
THIS IS PHENOMENAL!!! Haven't listened to this in a while and WHO says this is humour? OH, iz funny, good thing 'cause sometimes the truth hurts! These numbers aren't dirty, They are subtle, enDEARing even , the fun iz all over the place. I find this setting a much nicer place to be.
In case you didn't know, if you Don't like this, You are cool just for watching and even Cooler for reading and commenting. 2 Live Crew is offensive to Most people. This is on another level.
no need to ever give it away.....!!!! some women are more valued and coveted because they do not give it away...and you know who you are...that why your men give you such things...nothings wrong with that...Now you women who get noting but gimme gimme and get and they just walk away you know who you are also
Patty Laya always some little insecure man somewhere. Does your kind ever shut up ? Yes, we know you like being strung out and lead on like a dog . I'm glad you know your place. But this is the time to enjoy a gorgeous woman singing about it
Wow i know Bonnie Raitt has always said Ruth Brown was one oher many idols and you can see why And those horns swelling up so good Bonnie is a musical link hersel to Ruth Etta and Aretha in my book loved this clip of Ruth cheers
OMG - i love this woman !! imagine singing this one in one of those bar places. i don’t think they’d even have the music though, do you? 🤣😂😋🌷🌱 Thank you, my love. makes me feel a lot better about ‘meself’. :)

What a great experience, I envy you! To meet such a goddess as Ms Ruth Brown!
How old is she
What a great memory! I lived in. Vegas back in the day and met a few notables. Aww, the memories 🤗
Thanks for sharing!💖
Ruth Brown & Dinah Washington (Dr.Long John) and Sippie Wallace ( Woman Be Wise) are the best .
Classics that would be otherwise lost to the dusts of history, thank you posters who revive and keep alive such gems, many kudos!
Double entendre at its finest!
Think Ms. Ruth might have been...double entendred....once or twice?
I know that was crude and uncooth, but I just couldn't pass that one up.
Best Wishes from Texas!
Well, if she asked for a double entendre, would you give her one?
I'd let her have both of 'em....
I'm your backdoor man is a good one too.
See Lucille Bogan for single entendre...
I want this played at my funeral!!
Or else ... ?
This is a great song about a chair.
She is not talking about a chair. She's talking about her goods.
@@techielabteacher they were being sarcastic lol
Right!😏👌😂

That’s cool as hell
Holy shit I didn’t know that!
In the 1950's & early '60's...Etta James was the talk of the town. Her and others. THIS was one of them....one of the best.
Richard Marshall Bowman Johnny Otis used to carry a padlock and a door hinge on the road. He'd LOCK Etta James in her motel room!
As he should've,Indian Andy...! lol And somebody should've kept an eye on this one too! A coupla cool "papa stoppas!"
It's 2024 and I agree. Every female should listen and learn. It's not about prostitution, it's about respect. Sing it!
A Facebook post about Cardi and Meg's W.A.P. bought me here. I love this💜💜💜 Im a 91' baby and have never heard this 🤷🏾
Same, i’m 97 baby tho lol
Shit I'm a 75' baby and I ain't ever heard it! True everyday you learn something. Peace and blessings
This song is wholesome compared to Lucille Bogan lol
I'ma 90 baby nd Instagram brought me here
No you don't
Fantastic! One of the classic double entendre songs! Ruth made this her own!
Played this in public once. I loved it but the audience couldn't handle it. I love this song. and I love the way she does it even more.
They couldn't handle it because she's not even singing, she is just incoherently yelling and screaming. And her voice is like nails on a chalkboard
It’s a shame about the audience.
Every man should pay well for quality furniture. 🙌🙌🙌
LOL!!😅
"If I can't Sell it, I'm gonna keep sittin' on it"
~Ruth Brown
I had the privilege of seeing this performance in Black and Blue. It was just a few minutes of my life, but I will NEVER forget it.
Humor finds its way through the worst of times. Thank God for humor.
+Bill Craig Yes it does, humor is everywhere........
I can imagine my great aunt listening to this. Imagine those types of women back then! Trail blazers for all of us!
this is awesome, even back then she was singing about you have pay to play...love it...lol
😂and that's what the female rappers rap about... this is what it comes from
❤Silky smooth tones, tight harmony work, rhythm section handlin the biz, horns weavin in and out❤
Love this lady’s work, but my previous comment was intended for another performer. Please excuse.
Saw the Black & Blue revue three times with Ruth Brown, Linda Hopkins and Carrie Smith and others... What an entertaining evening and this particular song always brings a smile to my face. RIP Ruth...
"it's only been used once or twice. But it's still nice and tight" Euphemism?
James Carson the whole song is a euphemism
The rest of the song was double entendre... but that was the one line that wasn't...
Barely...
Duh.
naaaa...
Oh lawd!!!
An all-time classic!
This footage is rare and special.
Now to find footage of "Cabbage Head"...

I've been searching for the Black and Blue
Revue for 25 years. I first saw Ruth Brown
on a late night show. I was hooked!!!
I agree. I was smart enough to keep old records, and now a lot of them are on swinginkatz, as well as early TV. Thanks for watching.
She reminds me of Della Reese's character in Harlem Nights ☺️
I mean lyrically, it's genius 👌
She did this song Excellent!! I've heard other versions by other performers including a Drag Queen, but this is just honest innuendo!!
you have to pay to put it in her end tho

LOVE THE LYRICS THAT HAVE TWO DIFFERENT MEANINGS. VERY CLEVER. DINAH WASHINGTON'S " LONG JOHN BLUES " IS THAT TYPE OF SONG.
Ruth Brown is the loveliest!!!! anyone know where this video is from? what year it was filmed?
It ain't free until it don't work no more than you can't give it away 😅
