Wow. I am so shocked I have never heard of her. She has bold stage presence and she knows how to read the crowd. And to think she was only around 25-26 years old here.
Wow 🤩 I heard her for the first time yesterday! With my love for music, WHY haven’t I heard of this phenomenon before now?!?!! She is amazing! Top tier 👏🏾
gorgeous😍 and when she belts out that man in “what’s the matter with this man?” you feel that deep down to your toes. glad i’m experiencing her for the first time, sad it’ll never be the first time again. but i have a feeling i’ll have a similar reaction every single time i hear/see Ms Ruth Brown❤
AMEN to that she paved the way for all the other r and b divas she was the first big female r and b singer she had so many hits that Atlantic was known as the house that Ruth built!!!She also paved the way for rock and roll and did this by the way with very little TV exposure back in the fifties blacks were not seen that much on TV not even in sporting events
@@johnfulton4921 Her stage presence was perfection. She just didn't stand at a microphone, smile pretty and sing the way most female artists did in the day. She made the audience feel every word of her songs! A deaf person could watch this and understand what this song's about. Didn't hurt that she was absolutely gorgeous and charming, and that dress is to die for! I love that she had a big comeback in the 80s on Broadway and won a well-deserved Tony.
I'm turning 43 in May and grew up listening and loving this song. 80s baby and heard this back in the 80s. I'm thankful and quite shocked many of you have never heard this song.
I heard this song on 89.3 down here in Dallas-Fort Worth Tx and I had to come do some research to see who exactly this was. Very nice voice and beautiful woman as well
This is one of those times the live version is better.the recorded version has a slower tempo and I feel these version sounds better with these tempo .I love the song so much
this is a jazzed up version of Ruth's original recording which is fabulous and slower. I think she was advised to make these original recordings much faster and with a bigger band which was okay but those original Atlantic recordings used smaller ensembles and were much more intimate and fun.
I discovered this song by accident by combing You Tube. I couldn’t believe it. I thought wow this is fantastic! I had never heard this song before. Lo and behold most every KJ has it in their library of songs. It’s a big hit because it just grabs the people plus it’s something they haven’t heard a million times. I’m so glad you posted it and that I found it.
@Paula Lane: I remember this song when I was a little girl in the middle 1950s because my oldest sister, who was in her twenties, would listen to it on the radio and play it on our family's record player. This brings back good memories because it brings back memories of my sister who passed away in 1979 and I still miss her.
It’s baffling that this song went into obscurity because it’s so fantastic. Some people of course remember it, but there’s so many people that are unaware of this song’s existence.
I am shocked not to know this. How amazing to have been at the birth of motown. I was born 58 and loved motown and soul all my life. If you don't then you don't have a soul
It's a shame that I have heard about Ruth Brown today. She was quite a phenomenon. Very beautiful jazz. Date of this performance? Even as late as 1990, she looks stunning.
I don't know the year it was recorded but I have a feeling that we can listen where the Little Richard's falsetto came from, we also can have some clues about from who he got the inspirations for his face and eyes "manerisms" and we even can see from who he took inspiration for his hair style. If there is some truth in my feelings, I think that aesthetically Rock and Roll owes a lot to her. Too bad that until today I never heard nor read anything about her. On the other hand, too good that now I start to learn about her existence and music. All the best from Brazil. 🎼
I suddenly feel like the bass player I spoke with earlier this evening, might have been trying to tell me something beyond just sharing a killer tune. Now I'm feeling all Stagger Lee suddenly.
Not given the respect she deserves as one of the mothers of Rock and R&B.
Wow. I am so shocked I have never heard of her. She has bold stage presence and she knows how to read the crowd. And to think she was only around 25-26 years old here.
I saw this clip at The National Museum of African American Music and was mesmerized ❤
That's exactly what brought me here!!
Rock and roll would not exist without ruth brown
Rock N Roll would not exist without countless unknown and unrecognized black American musicians and singers.
Amen!
Wow 🤩 I heard her for the first time yesterday! With my love for music, WHY haven’t I heard of this phenomenon before now?!?!! She is amazing! Top tier 👏🏾
I loved her in "Hair Spray".
50's RnB is so explosive, Ruth rocked the house!
She's the OG of charming great singers!

R&Bs Original Queen-----Yes, she was the original one rocking the world(since the late 40's) with this new music later marketed as "rock & roll".
This is one of those times the live version is better. The recorded version has a slower tempo and I feel this version sounds better with this tempo
So, she is the OFFICIAL Queen of R&B!! I am not surprised! Sza better shut up owning this title, she cannot hold a candle on the legendary Ruth Brown!
Contemporary R&B and R&B are two different genres…

Those spritely little piano riffs during the chorus are my second favorite part of this song, besides Miss Ruth’s voice.
This is one of those times the live version is better.the recorded version has a slower tempo and I feel these version sounds better with these tempo .I love the song so much
Aw, I thought I was the only person on here having that mind set, Lol…
