look - its real simple . water and black coffee and green and black tea - no sugar no creams - fast for 16 hours - 8 hour eating window . rinse and repeat . people like to make to much out of fasting imo

By day three even my skin felt light... like literally, it was weird as fuck. My focus was amazing. It seemed like my eyes were open wider than normal. Combat hunger by drinking MORE water, going for a brisk walk... get out in the sun, let your body absorb the Vitamin D3. Fuck all the drinks and if you are starving (all mental), if you need something sweet blah blah blah... either fast or break the damn fast and go get a steak lol. You can take VITAMIN supplements while fasting... e.g. multi-vitamins or individual vitamins etc etc. The 1-1-3 regimen worked best for ME. Week 1- Fast for one 24 hr period Week 2-Fast for one 24 hr period Week 3-Fast for 72 hr period REPEAT Work your way up. It's not a sprint. Let your body AND mind get used to fasting. Never eat shitty heading into a fasting period. In other words, don't eat fucking Philly Cheese Steaks and then roll into a non-eating period. You will have withdrawals like a fucking crack addict. Eat healthy going into the fast so there will be less shock on your system... i.e. less withdrawal pain. I haven't been sick in over 16 months... not once. I used to get sick once or twice a year at minimum. My only regimental change is the inclusion of fasting into my life. The shit is real.

Dr. Stoppani: Great video! I just have a few questions... I'm currently a medical intern and I have to train before work, around 4-5 am (depending on what rotation I am on) because at the end of the day I am so tired especially if it's a floor rotation. However, I don't want to break my fast until noon because by the end of the day I'll be really hungry if I break my fast immediately post work out. I've been drinking BCAA between working out and breaking my fast which works well because the team rounds on patients in the morning and I can just sip on the BCAA. Now if I'm not really supposed to be doing that, what would you suggest in that case? Thanks!
I find this video as excellent for all of us going into Intermittent fasting. Had a chance to see some other videos from others that were trashing Stoppani for things that I have not really gotten into. But judging from his video I find him practical, down to earth and well informed about the topic. Regarding his preworkout formula can also say its an honest product that delivers what it says even though I had to order it through Italy cause couldnt find an outlet here in Greece.

I drink lots of diet soda, flavoured water , sweet tea/coffe (aspartame) and my results with intermittent fasting are awesome. I stll have some fat to lose, but I lost 6 kilos pretty fast. Also, I only have a 4 hour window and usually get 2 pretty big meals. Low carb diet, 4th day is refeeding day when I get more carbs. Keeps me continuing. Also, 4th day is flexible diet day, I eat things that are forbidden like pasta, counting the calories. I do not say that I do what is good, but it works for me really well.
As someone who has studied mental conditioning in college, I’d also recommend removing the shaker mechanism from your bottle you’re fasting. Because your brain is used to relating the shaker sound to being fed protein!
Anything that tastes sweet can potentially spike insulin. I had noteworthy issues with Zevia when fasting seemingly because of this. I think you're probably okay with a very subtle sweetness, such as what you find in unsweetened herbal teas that have no calories. Maybe even a very small amount of stevia where the beverage doesn't seem sweet, but maybe just barely cuts bitter? IDK..., but sweet flavors are clearly potential problems at least for some people.
I’ve done intermittent fasting while sipping on diets drinks with 0 calories and have see no difference in results than just drinking water alone. And I can also enjoy yourself with a diets Soda here and there
Hi Jim! I have also fasted off and on most of my life. There are endless reasons why. But mostly is because I love good foods too much - LOL And regardless I personally have to keep size 7/8 it is just who i am.. : ) I wanted to share.. I make my own flavored water - i do not measure.. I just use a 16 oz jar that I put in about 2 oz of diet cranberry..or diet cherry,, diet grape , diet mango.Only one of these flavors are mixed into my jar.all the rest is distilled water..I.also mix in 1 Tbsp. of real lemon juice.. & 1 Tbsp of cider vinegar.. & 1 teaspoon of zero calorie sweetener) I do this all day.. & refill it when its gone. It usually is measure about 3/4 times a day. Also I keep another bottle with plain distilled water next to me 24/7- So sometimes I pickup the just water. What I also do is keep everything iced. My fasting is .. 7 days - and 21 days. I seem to have energy I get a tad weak on my 21 day fast. But all is totally worth it! I have Never been heavy. But I certainly could be if I did not watch every meal. I only do my 21 day fast once a year. Mostly if I feel like I have ate too much.. I always fast for 36 hours then eat one vegt. meat meal the next day. One more thing I want to share - every morning I have a cup of coffee with 1 Tbsp of raw organic coconut oil and 1 tsp of my zero cal sweetener --- OK just wanted to *****Thank You***** for posting your wonderful advice.. I fast 22 hours a day and eat at 7pm. While I fast I drink two quarts of _Stinging Nettle Infusion_ throughout the day. Its gives me all the vitamins and minerals I need and makes me feel great!
What about Macha green tea? What about urine therapy? I ate my dark chocolate covered espresso beans today. I like eating them after I brush my teeth. Should I ate them before bed instead? Should I not brush my teeth in the morning but instead floss before bed? I get tired after I eat so I'd rather only eat before bed time.
George Louis - fresh urine will not break a fast, aged urine may do.. Dr Philips "OMAD Orin Looping" discusses it and has some good information on urine fasting. Distilled water is also good to hydrate too.

To what extent does having BCAAs while fasting hinder the fat-burning? Because I like to train in the morning more often then not, then break my fast around 4-6 hours later. Therefore I like to have around 10-30g of BCAAs during that period in between so as to not lose muscle. Thanks!

Sure, he was not exactly pushing the pace, but he did provide a lot more information than just "water, black coffee and green tea are allowed during intermittent fasting". He's explained about pre- or post-gym drinks, artificial sweeteners, energy drinks, coffee cream or other fatty substances and many more things. Sure, if you just wanted to hear what you can drink, that's nice, but I'd rather grab the free information about all these topics and run with it, even if it costs me 12 minutes.
+Jim Stoppani my fasting window is from 7pm - 11am. Due to work, I workout from 5-6am. I have been taking BCAAs during my workouts since I do not have my postworkout meal for another 5 hours after. I am sure it is not optimal for recovery but so far I'm feeling great. What are the advantages/disadvantages to working out fasted and pushing out the post workout meal?

+Flisker Even though the Rockstar energy drink has 2g of carbs, it doesn't have any calories. The type of carbs in it (erythritol) don't have calories. As far as carbs that do have calories, I would try to keep it under 40 calories while in the fasted state (10g of carbs as each gram of carbs has 4 calories). I personally don't consume over 10 calories while I am fasting.
What about a lemon slice, a few caps red cider vinegar, cinnamon and turmeric. All okay in fasting window or best to take in at meal time? Also vitamin d gummy, probiotic gummy, ginseng, fish oil gel cap, garlic gelcap? Pretty much been fasting with black coffee and green tea with above items and pills at mealtime. If you're an average person you can absolutely drink diet drinks. You're still going to see results. It's all about the caloric intake. You don't have to be this strict.
Can I replace black coffe with malt? I know that it has some calories (85 calories per 100 grams says internet) but I think one little spoon (maybe 2,5 grams or less) has the minimal amount. Is it okay or will it break my fast?
About artificial sweeteners: Where would the body even be getting energy from, if it has no stored glucose? Muscle breakdown for energy only occurs in extreme starvation (3+ days). It doesn't matter if the body is releasing insulin, it simply has to burn fat to keep functioning if there is no alternative, even if the body's reaction to artificial sweeteners is to "think" it should have sugar reserves. (Posted this as a reply to another comment but figured it might more easily get an answer if posted on it's own.)

Thank you! I've been putting coconut oil and milk in my coffee and having home made protein shakes with collagen hydrolysate. I'll consider this working up to the fasting and try it your way tomorrow. No wonder I'm not burning much fat.
I'm 6'2, 225lbs, and 4% body fat. I credit all of that to intermittent fasting! And all I have during my fast is my own urine.

Damn, was hoping I could get away with putting coconut creamer in my coffee because I have a hard time drinking my coffee black --- guess I had better acquire a taste for black coffee if I want my intermittent fasting to work :-(
You could start drinking sugarless green tea and it will make you adopt the bitter taste of the black Coffee.
I use bulletproof coffee to extend my fast

Once you acquire a taste for straight black coffee it becomes quite enjoyable and delicious. It's also the only way I can differentiate between quality and shit coffee

To what extent does having BCAAs while fasting hinder the fat-burning? Because I like to train in the morning more often then not, then break my fast around 4-6 hours later. Therefore I like to have around 10-30g of BCAAs during that period in between so as to not lose muscle.

So, a pre-workout with no calories should be OK. Most pre-workouts are adding BCAAs to them.
what if I workout early morning at 6'30 am and then I brake my fast at 2 pm am I able to take a post-workout whey protein after the workout?
Sure, he was not exactly pushing the pace, but he did provide a lot more information than just "water, black coffee and green tea are allowed during intermittent fasting". He's explained about pre- or post-gym drinks, artificial sweeteners, energy drinks, coffee cream or other fatty substances and many more things. Sure, if you just wanted to hear what you can drink, that's nice, but I'd rather grab the free information about all these topics and run with it, even if it costs me 12 minutes.

+Jim Stoppani my fasting window is from 7pm - 11am. Due to work, I workout from 5-6am. I have been taking BCAAs during my workouts since I do not have my postworkout meal for another 5 hours after. I am sure it is not optimal for recovery but so far I'm feeling great. What are the advantages/disadvantages to working out fasted and pushing out the post workout meal?
My only question is who the hell adds butter to their coffee?

One quick question if I may, you're saying "Will that throw your fast off ? ... No." (2g of carbs in Rockstar drink) do you know what is the threshold for "stopping" your fast in terms of carbs ? I mean how many carbs would I have to ingest +- to get "out of fast" ? 5 , 10 , 20 , 40 g ?

+Flisker Even though the Rockstar energy drink has 2g of carbs, it doesn't have any calories. The type of carbs in it (erythritol) don't have calories. As far as carbs that do have calories, I would try to keep it under 40 calories while in the fasted state (10g of carbs as each gram of carbs has 4 calories). I personally don't consume over 10 calories while I am fasting.

What about a lemon slice, a few caps red cider vinegar, cinnamon and turmeric. All okay in fasting window or best to take in at meal time?

J. Fontaine yes, listen to the video. Has to be black, no cream or sugar what so ever. Any type of macro breaks a fast, even something 5 calories.

That’s interesting about sugar in the mouth because I use mouthwash. It’s something to consider.
If you're an average person you can absolutely drink diet drinks. You're still going to see results. It's all about the caloric intake. You don't have to be this strict.
Can I replace black coffe with malt? I know that it has some calories (85 calories per 100 grams says internet) but I think one little spoon (maybe 2,5 grams or less) has the minimal amount. Is it okay or will it break my fast?
About artificial sweeteners: Where would the body even be getting energy from, if it has no stored glucose? Muscle breakdown for energy only occurs in extreme starvation (3+ days). It doesn't matter if the body is releasing insulin, it simply has to burn fat to keep functioning if there is no alternative, even if the body's reaction to artificial sweeteners is to "think" it should have sugar reserves.

Pants-off Dance-off I believe it's not where the energy comes from its also whether your brain thinks you're fasting, as growth chemicals or whatever and fat burning chemicals I guess are released when your body thinks you're fasting
