Barack Obama delivers powerful eulogy at John Lewis funeral

- Former U.S. president Barack Obama addressed mourners at Thursday’s funeral for civil rights icon John Lewis, honouring the life of the late congressman in a powerful eulogy. Obama described Lewis’ civil rights legacy, and said that although his faith was tested “again and again,” he was “a man of pure joy and unbreakable perseverance.”
"He not only embraced that responsibility, but he made it his life's work," the former president said.
"John Lewis will be a founding father of that fuller, fairer, better America."
Obama also referenced the 2020 U.S. presidential election and current anti-racism protests across the country, saying "there are those in power who are doing their darnedest to discourage people from voting," and "undermining the postal service in the run-up to an election."
"John Lewis devoted his time on this earth fighting the very attacks on democracy." He continued.
Obama added that Lewis knew "that the fate of this democracy depends on how we use it, that democracy isn't automatic- it has to be nurtured."
The funeral for Lewis was held at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on Thursday, capping off a six-day celebration of life honouring the congressman.
Lewis died on July 17 at the age of 80.

Didn’t always agree with every policy but always loved to listened to what he said for his love for his fellow man and country, no matter race, color or creed, despite the hate he received. If any president deserved more than 8yrs he was one of them.

One of the greatest, most charismatic speakers ever. Beautiful speech about a great, great man. In watching this I was struck by how this seems like I'm looking back 100 years ago in a completely different era. Look how much has changed in a few short years and will never be the same again.

@@cecilyt006 It's definitly not for m (the other comment I made was the whole speech had me on the verge of tears) , but I thought that phrase his mother told him was a beautiful sentiment that summarized this American heroes life. He was placed in prison 45 times and was very nearly beaten to death by a police officer. Idk if you've ever read the book 1984 by George Orwell but in the novel the main character keeps on being told that 2+2 is 5 and not 4, and no matter how much he was tortured he believed that because facts were facts. John knew that no matter what happened to him, the fact was that black people were being treated unfairly and he had to stand up for what he knew what was right.
What I've learned is that Obama is such a polished liar; he was able to tell 400 people shoulder to shoulder in a Church that Trump wants them to get sick in a polling booth.

Every single person, besides Obama who is speaking and is at least 6 ft from everyone, is wearing a mask. Also, none of those people who would be at high risk of dying from the Coronavirus would probably be there. For voting, it doesn't matter if you are high risk or not. It's your American duty to vote and this is just an easy way to make sure everyone has equal voting access. I'm actually surprised republicans wouldn't be more on board with this type of plan considering their demographic.
Obama still has that swag when he walks out. He looks rested and tanned. His tribute to John Lewis was eloquent, dignified and perfect. Thank you Mr. Obama for that walk back in history and teaching us all of how Mr. Lewis impacted American history.

Well, an attempt is being made to fill those shoes but it is taking 2 people to fill them: Pastor Warnock is now Senator Warnock and one of Lewis' interns, Jon Ossoff is now Senator Ossoff. May they carry on the legacy of their mentor with power and dignity. I have to think John Lewis is pleased with the results of last week's run-off election.

I was watching a documentary recently and there was a shot of a group of young boys from Africa for a second and one of them was wearing a shirt with Obama and the American flag on it. It made me smile at his joy and the sense of hope for the future of us all.

@Kat K God bless Mr Lewis and his service. Only God knows the future destination of each person, whether they go to heaven or hell. I appreciate his advocacy for equal rights. I think it's sad though that Democrats do not think of the rights of innocent babies, especially that over 22 million innocent black babies have been aborted over the last 50 yrs.
