  • Before we discuss a practical way to handle mental resistance, let’s talk about the neuroscience behind why we experience resistance.

    www.youtube.com...
When we’re doing something new, different, or unusual, the prefrontal cortex area of our brain becomes active. This part of the brain processes ideas, perceptions, and logistics and uses a lot of energy - it can only process a certain amount of information at a time and tends to get tired quickly. So, when we experience any change, whether it’s good or bad, our brain has to work harder.
This extra effort by the prefrontal cortex when dealing with change can lead to physical and mental discomfort. This discomfort can activate the amygdala. Our amygdala is the orchestrater of our flight or fight response to danger, stress, or the unknown. When the amygdala is activated, it can stimulate feelings of feelings of fear or anger, and can cause us to act emotionally and impulsively. It can also lead us to certain psychological states such as depression, confusion, or panic.
Our brains try to be efficient, and using our basal ganglia is one way. Our basal ganglia automates our actions, thoughts and behaviors and happens at the unconscious level.
Simply put, Whenever we experience resistance to change, our habits stored in our basal ganglia tells us what behavior we need to perform that gets us out of discomfort and gives us quick relief.
To overcome resistance we have to expect it to come and be aware when it is happening. Observe yourself and try to process the feelings you're having and why you’re feeling them. Also notice what behavior you're performing to get out of them. As your awareness increases, you’ll likely be able fight your mental resistance and keep working
I started feeling stressed and had strong doubt about being able to finish this video, and felt so uncomfortable, walked away and started mindlessly watching tv.
A couple hours later, I realized what was happening. I understood that I was experiencing stress of making a video on a topic I haven’t made before, my brain feared the unknown. And I was also stressed about spending the morning trying to get work done, but having nothing to show for it. My brain feared not being productive with my time.
I understood that watching tv was an unconscious coping strategy to stop feeling this mental resistance. You see, now that I was aware of what was happening, I understood, that whenever I feel these uncomfortable feelings, it’s completely normal and expected.
Now that I’m aware these feelings are normal and expected, my brain was less stressed, and with being less stressed, it made it easier to get back to work and finish this video. If I keep becoming aware of why I’m experiencing resistance and keep working anyway, eventually my basal ganglia will automate my actions to keep working when ever feeling this stress instead of mindlessly watching tv.
To perform any meaningful activity in life, there will be some discomfort in the beginning. You can waste a lot of time trying to figure out how to make positive changes without feeling any discomfort, but it’s not going to happen.
You can research the right mindset and strategies to handle whatever it is you want to do, but you’ll still feel discomfort and need to take action anyway. That’s really what makes someone a professional, not letting their emotions get in the way from doing what it is they are on this earth to do.
The good news is, the more and more you fight this resistance taking action, the easier it becomes to make it a habit and something you do consistently.

The amount of resistance that affects us subconsciously is frightening. It's even tougher being consciously present enough to make any significant change and pushing through the mental resistance.

Sometimes the discomfort makes me dig in my heels deeper then turn to substances to numb out.
Sometimes slowing down and letting it be there is better with Les’s kickback and less chances of drinking or whatever
I pushed myself earlier this year to do a bunch of stuff and then I had a complete burnout/ hardcore resistance in reaction to pushing myself when I felt uncomfortable

    Great video.
I have been plagued by this mental resistance a lot, which often even leads to fear, as you say.
I made some insights recently about it, along the lines you speak of, though.
My previous response to that resistance and fear was that something was wrong and that I needed to stop what I was doing and find another way to do it in a way that didn't trigger the mental resistance. This was almost a hopeless task. I became too dependent on the mood I was in the current day or other factors I could not really control.
That created anxiety and a feeling of hopelessness. I really wanted to be productive, but I could not find the solution this way.
However, by accepting the mental resistance and fear and not seeing it as a singal to quit, but to try harder to keep focus and push through made a difference.
Especially an analogy to physical exercise is fitting here: What if you stopped running when you first found a little discomfort while running or stopped lifting weight when you felt it was a bit heavy? Then you would not improve at all. The discomfort there means you are getting to your limit and improving.
This is more than an analogy. It works the same way for mental exercise. If it gets hard mentally it means you need to cope with that and endure to build your mental muscles to be able to improve.
It might sound like a trivial insight, but it is not. Of course it is good to endure you might say, but actually realizing for yourself what that means is another thing.
It is extremely easy to listen to your feelings. If you feel discomfort it is very easy to think that you should stop doing what you are doing.

      @@MichaelUnks Thanks.
Comparing it to resistance in physical exercise helped me a lot. One needs to push through the resistance and not stop because it feels a little uncomfortable.
I was/is very good at overanalyzing my feelings and how to change them instead of just accept a little discomfort on the way.

Hi Mike thank you so much 4 this video. It surely helps me to understand my resistance. I was struggling finding why I tend to resist in so many aspects of my life. Now FOR ME thanks to the help of your video I can see clearly that one yes it is normal to feel fear of the outcome, fear of failure, fear of my own expectations and therefore I see that my focus is on the negative. This video helps me to bring to my attention to retake my focus on the right direction of not letting my emotions get on the way and see that feeling uncomfortable and committing to an effort and keep going is part of the process to accomplish wherever needs to be done. Your comforting words of It is OK it is normal to feel like this creates a ❤ secure feeling in me, that makes me feel confident. I guess it heals the trauma I got when is a child of being disapproved for everything I did not meeting the expectations of my caregivers. 😢 This video gives me subconsciously an approval of doing things right, no matter how they come about and propels me to take acction. I didn't realize that my resistance too comes from listening to those old, rotten voices that were still playing in my head. So when you say it is ok to feel uncomfortable, fear of and yet do it and you' ll get there, that alone removes stress, guilt and fear off my plate. And it adds permission, approval, undestanding, love and empathy to myself. Thank you..❤🎉

You provide a lot of insight into a very important topic in a simple way that is easy to absorb, and you don't shy away from the fact that we will still feel discomfort that we cannot think or imagine away. That's very valuable. I also really appreciate your definition of "professional" at the conclusion. I've been struggling mightily with resistance, especially in my work, and finally realized that my core problem is that I let my emotions control me. I wonder how this coincides with development trauma and cptsd? Can I really just push past all my feelings and “just do it” instead of feeling sorry for myself and trying to fix myself

Hi there, thanks - I found this helpful. How did you create this video? Via a software you did yourself, or did you send your voice recording to someone to create the video? Would love to know, as I've been interested in creating some animated videos like this. Thanks!

    • @MichaelUnks
      @MichaelUnks  Год назад +1

I used a software called videoscribe. It’s $170ish per year and provides graphics you can use for free. However, the free drawings are lower quality and you can buy better ones anywhere from $2 to $20 per graphic. I’ve sometimes spent close to $100 to provide quality animations, but once you buy them you can use them over and over again. I’d usually spend about an hour for every two minutes of video creating the animations for the voiceover

@@MichaelUnks Thank you, I had looked at videoscribe and some others, but found it hard to make a decision. It sounds like there is a lot of work involved in creating these videos, but I assume you do get more accomplished and producing them over time!

But is it always worth it not to follow the resistance of your brain?
And when should we resist our natural brain inclinations?

Your story about having resistance to making your resistance video seems contrived. It is like making a video about the common cold and saying you caught it while making a common cold video. It is not important if you did or didn't. What matters is that you appear dishonest.
