- Hello everyone,
Today I share with you how to make distilled water at home. I use distilled water in my essential oil diffusers to prolong them. I know some people need distilled water for CPAP Machines and may find this tutorial helpful along with those who are making DIY Disinfecting Wipes. I hope you found this video helpful.
In health and happiness,
Vanessa
Quite a few people who are asking basic questions don't understand what is happening in the video.
The water in the pan, which can be tap water, mineral water or even sea water is turned into steam by when it is heated up. When the boiled water turns from liquid to its gaseous state, steam, only pure water is evaporated and the impurities are left behind. The steam rises and comes into contact with the upturned lid, which is colder as it is further away from the heat source. This cools the steam which condenses the steam and it transitions to being water again and the droplets, held on by surface tension, run down the pan lid under their own weight and collect at the hanfle. When enough water droplets collect, the tension is broken and they drip into the floating bowl.
This process would contiue until the pan water has been used up.

Thank you for this.
I needed this video. Thank you.Because we got a venus fly trap and I have to learn how to care for the little guy🌱
Fr , I ended up going to Walmart and buying distilled water but when I was bout to open it , my uncle said I got it wit minerals , and yup now I gotta boil and collect the water
@@uglywrld7068ah a fellow carnivorous plant grower! this gonna sound random but if you live in the big city, dont give it rainwater. itll kill the plant! give it this water
Yoooooo same! I just got a fly trap & I’m too lazy to go to the store hahahaha
Meeeee too! ☺️ wish me luck, y’all. It almost seems like plants come to my house to die. I can’t keep em alive to save my soul. 😩
@@savana219 has it died yet? XP
I can do ok with some plants, so if you're needing the "unkillables" list I can help with that, but I suck at succulents and I've never really tried a fly trap before. Hope it works!
The part you didn't figure out that desertsun02 did was to not have it be a roiling boil. A good bit of the "dirty" water will splash up into the clean water bowl ruining your distilled water goal. Bring the water to a boil and then turn it to medium heat for a very light boil.
Thank you!
You should also bring that water to a rolling boil for a few minutes prior to adding the bowl/lid. This will remove the contaminants with a lower BP water.

Thank you for getting straight to the point... people who normally search for these videos are experiencing an emergency and the other videos out there ramble along for over 5 mins before getting to the point! Thank you!
so true! same with recipes.....ramble ramble . This video is super
To be fair, in an emergency situation the best thing to do is to study/be prepared for it in advance or keep a resource that doesn't need electricity and internet access like a reputable survival guide.
hahaha true, extremely long unnecessary videos
This method works when drinking water is not available. Salt water, pond water, mud puddle water, etc. will all give you drinkable water this way. Just make sure the boiling water doesn't splash into the clean water. If you use a floating pan, as the water fills the pan, the pan will sink, too, so get a container that is high enough to avoid splashes. Additionally, the water doesn't have to boil, it just needs to steam.
Then would using a steamer and placing a small bowl, similar to the one used on top, plus lid be more efficient in collecting clean water?
@@tp-channel9483 Any barrier to the dirty water would work. A metal platform with holes underneath the bowl that kept the bowl higher than the water would be a more efficient guard against splashes. But so will keeping the heat down where the water isn't boiling, just steaming. If I had to use this method, I would be using the biggest pot I could find, because the process is slow, so the more surface area you have, the faster the condensation will happen. I might also do it outside over a wood fire, because the electric used could be very expensive. There are many versions of this process using different equipment. The cleaner the water, the better. I think water collection using a plastic tarp (or more than one) that funnels rainwater into a container is almost a must to have on hand in a water emergency.
I thought you couldn't drink distilled water?
Distilled water is purified water, so it's perfectly fine for drinking. If you're worried about not getting minerals, there should be plenty of minerals in the foods you eat, and if you're still worried, take a multivitamin.
Actually that's not true! Distilled water has no minerals or contaminants. Purified water is one less step which takes out the contaminants but not the minerals. Distilled is needed if you are needing water for something that cant have minerals in it. Purified is good but not good if you need that last step. Hope this helps. 🙂
Sure take an electrolyte powder
An you put seasalt In it

Just in the first 5 seconds of seeing this method I got to say this is a great idea! It's incredibly simple and straight to the point! Great video! Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you from the UK!!! My orchid needs distilled water so I now know how to make it!
Thank you, just had a winter storm and I'm stuck at home. This will come in handy. Thanks from Texas!
This has got to be one of the slickest most clever ways to distill water that I have ever seen! Thank you so very much!
Rreally Needed this for my CPAP.. Was getting concerned because I can’t find any in stores. Problem solved Thanks!
For me my lid is the problem as it's curve and making steam escape, I pour 2L into my pot only for a cup of distilled water :( and machine are expensive
My issue is the store distilled water is sold in plastic containers. What a waste. You use up the clean water and are left with a brand new, sparkling clean, empty, plastic container.
Thanks. Only thing I would recommend is that you slow the boil down a bit so the water from the boil doesn't actually splash up into your bowl. Cheers.
Distilled water is great for plants too, especially carnivorous plants!
Its yummy
That’s why I’m up here looking on how to make it for my plants
I am following this right now for my practical of rusting.
I will put distilled water and nail in a container and then i will wait and observe for three days .
Jazakillah Khair for this
Put a metal rack to hold the bowl up and still to reduce movement/splash risk.
Thanks for sharing this tip. I like to use distilled water in my iron but hadnt thought of using it in my diffuser. Take care!
Super simple method. Just be sure to have a lot of time, and heat, handy!
Awsome! Thank you for sharing. I wish I’d known about this when I had my little Venus fly trap. I would have made it fresh every time I watered. Perhaps I shale try again
i looked this up because i just got a venus flytrap
Thank you for sharing. 🇺🇸 here. I'm using my distilled water in a gallon humidifer I just purchased.
I honestly didn't realise how easy it is to distill water. I have carnivarous plants which need either rain or distilled water. If I use regular tap water it will kill them as it's high in minerals! Great video, thanks Vanessa!
And you only need a little for your plants - so this is a super practical way for you to go about it!
Very cool 😎 I've been looking into buying a distiller online. Not anymore, thanks to you! Saved me money and I learned something new 😌 💯 😏 ✨️
Many Thanks
Gabriel
Excellent video - you should make sure you are patient and do this at a low boil. If you have a rapid boil, then drops of water will splash from the pan to the bowl. Remember, it is not the boiling that makes the water "distilled" it is turning it to steam (that does not contain the minerals and impurities) and then back to water that results in the distilling process. Water drops jumping into the pan will bring minerals with them, regardless of their temperature.
Yes I got snowed in and needed distilled water! Life saver...I am on a CPAP machine.
I did NOT know it could be that simple!!!! I will save a lot of money. A thousand kisses. 💙 💙 💙 God bless.
Thanks for your video! I was horrified to recently learn how little of our plastic bottles are actually being recycled in the US and I need a CPAP machine which requires it; and feel guilty buying all those huge plastic bottles of distilled water and attempting to recycle them, only to find out 95% end up in land fills or worse. I will do this for the majority of time from now on!
Totally agree, I use a CPAP too; but maybe hang on to one or more of your plastic bottles and use it to store your distilled water? In summer time, I use the plastic gallon jugs to fill up water from my dehumidifier in the basement. I then use the water for my garden!
well, no good deed goes unpunished. Between BPA, PFAS, and micro plastics, I guess there is no point in trying to recycle or re-use anything. 😥@PopswagthedogpmcPmcpopswag
Shiny! Thanks for the comparison between using ice and not - pretty much every guide says ice is a must, but I doubted it would be absolutely vital, and I'd prefer not to have to clear a spot in the freezer to make ice ahead of time. Since I only need 1/4 to 1/2 a cup at a time for making salami, this will do the trick nicely. Many thanks!

"Today Is a Good Day to Live" is the song at the end..... in case anyone was drooling over it like i was.
Thank you for this! I have carnivorous plants at home, so this has helped me make distilled water myself instead of just buying some :)
Thanks man for your video. Need to try this as I am on well water also but mine is full of iron. Cannot drink it. Need good drinking water. Only I imagine it costs more in heat to get a gallon of distilled water than to buy at local no-frills. Only .99 cents a gallon there. But in winter time be good, as noticed cooking can help to heat a home.
It's March 2022 and all the stores in my town that would normally sell it are out. I have no idea, so, this was a big help. Thank you.
It’s been an interesting couple of years - I am so glad this helped you in some way. A little patience and time and you’ll then have some distilled water for your needs.
thank you, I just got a Cpap today and needed to know this.
this knowledge is more helpful than most nowadays realize, thanks for the tip, great video.
my water pumps, snakes and plants thank you!!!
Awww so glad it helps ☺️
Thanks so much I needed to make distlled water because flat screen needed cleaning badly. I had seen another youtube video of how to clean the screen and they said to use distilled water and it worked ... thanks for taking the time to makke my life less stressful.
Thank you you're an intelligent woman I knew there had to be an easy way to get distilled water even if it does take a while. Your video is the only video that got right to the point everybody else wants to talk about all kinds of things thank you I appreciate that . You also have a very nice voice you should do some kind of sleep assisting work if you're a Christian I'd love to have a CD of you holding scripture God bless you. Thank you so much food safety is an issue in our country and watering the garden with distilled water is also being considered
I tried this for the first time Thursday and it worked great, we have very hard water and this water is much better
Thank you.clever.been worried about pollution in our drinking water, you have just gave me the answer. Thanks again✌💚🇬🇧
I used this for growing my orchids in full water culture and it works! It's more tedious than just buying water but in today's economy...
Thanks! 😂 I was stubborn and told my pharmacist that I'd mix my own Benzaclin Acne Cream which I need distilled water for. This helped!
Haha love this 😅 hope it worked!
🇬🇧Thank you for this, I have a megahome now and recommend it, however it's taken 4 years before I could afford one. I am sharing this for those in need BLESSINGS TO YOU AND ALL YOU HOLD DEAR 🙏🧘♀️💎💚
I have one started right now and only watched the first 37 seconds. Thanks I have been buying bottles of distilled water.
Thank you. I might have to buy it because this produces so little water for the work and the time.
Diffusing in 100% distilled water ISNT best practice. Diffusing in mineral water is the preferred method as the (very) volatile partials attach to the minerals during diffusion. The minerals then carry the oils further into the room therefore extending their life and overall preserving as much integrity of the oils as possible.
But, there's nothing worse than seeing your diffuser be destroyed from hard water.
So I either use some kind of bottled water or I use distilled water with a couple tablespoons of tap water for the minerals
Thanks for the video! Appreciate your simplicity and getting straight to the point!!!!
You’re wrong
Not correct. Tap water has not only contaminates but minerals as well. This causes build up in the machine and lines. Also without distilled you are contaminating your air lines and mask with bacteria from the tap water. There is a reason why Drs and nurses tell you to use distilled only. There are other reasons that have to do with what you are breathing in as well. Please educate yourself for your health and well being of your equipment. Much love ❤
How cool to watch that! Thanks. Trust y'all are doing well and staying safe. 💕💕
We are doing well! How are you these days? So happy to hear from you 🤗
@@VanessaVendetti I'm well, trying to stay in, except I still go to the soup kitchen on Tuesdays and honestly feel safe there! May sound funny or illogical but this is my thinking. Since God has commissioned us to address and feed the needy as we are doing I can't imagine Him allowing that to make us sick. We still must maintain our space and wash, wash our hands and use good common sense. We really have no contact, all is done from the parking lot for now. I do my grocery shopping that day and get milk for my grandson and son then go home and really do not go out much. Remember when I got so sick the end of February and self quarantined for 3 weeks after I saw the Dr , wonder if I might have had. It started with sore throat, chills, and fever!! I'll never know, but might have been. I was really sick for a bit. You take gentle care. I love you guys. 💕💕 Will be so glad to get out again to another norm. Like after 9/11, all changed!! God bless!!
Hello dear Gretchen🤗so glad you are doing well! Good to hear from you and that you are getting joy out of helping others❤it's so sweet of you. Hey, I wondered the same thing back then when you were not well. Who knows. Take care and God bless!!😙
Thank you for sharing this video. I’ve just bought some houseplants and one says to water with distilled water. I will be trying this method of collecting it.
Thanks for video I need distilled water to mix with coolant for my car.
Thanks, right now it’s hard to find and since I need it for my cpap this is a big help
You are so welcome - I know many store shelves are empty of them or it sells out quick. a little time and patience and you can make your own - better a little than nothing, right?
Thank you for the video! And thank you all for the additional comments

Hi Girl, Good to See you!!!
Hope all is well with you and your family.
What a great tip on making our on Distilled water. Thank You for sharing this tutorial! 😍😍😍
Glad I know how to do this now. However it's probably cheaper and I know it's a lot quicker to buy at grocery store since I have to boil my water with gas and natural gas prices are so high now.
Thank you for sharing this video, I have a CPAP machine and distilled water is sometimes hard to find.

I was soo confused but I am no longer confused now 💜
I use reusable wipes. I use tap water with a little isopropyl alcohol to keep bacteria from growing. If you don't feel like making enough distilled water for all applications, you can do that. I should be using distilled in my humidifier, though. Tap water builds up mineral slime and it's gross.
I like your video using glass lid to make distilled water..... looks more purified。
Thank you! So hard to be able to by distilled water these days! 😇
I am so glad this helped. It has been so hard to find Distilled water on our shelves as well 😔
Thank you love ❤️ this is so useful 🙏🏽
Right on. I’m wondering if using more ice would speed up the process. Being as how that is parallel with how a lab grade distillation apparatus works. As you said tho, discarding a pool of melted ice is just another step to have to worry about. But hey, this seems to work. I’m not knockin your methods. Good work.
I missed you !!! Thank you for posting !
Going to try this for my open moss terrarium
Whoa, THAT is a great idea!!!!
Thanks I jus bought 2 gallons from local store for .99 cents but this will work when camping
Perfect for my cigar humidor! Thanks

Thanks for sharing. What a great idea.

What I need like large amounts of distilled water for humidifier this doesn’t make enough?
Very helpful thank you for your advice.
Hate to tell you.YOU can use normal tap water in a CPAP. I am on a CPAP. I know the downside to using tap water is the minerals that is left behind if it runs out of water. All you need to do is just add a little bit of CH3COOH other wise known as vinegar. Most but if not all, people are bound to have vinegar in the house.
I wonder how much energy is used for one cup of water, but I will do it because my bamboo tree in the kitchen must have distilled water and I can't buy any. This process reminds me of pharmacy college years ago. My grocery store manager told me you had the solution. Thanks.
Thanks for this I'm learning how to make soap

isnt it really expensive for that little amount of distilled water to boil so much water, the costs of electricity etc.

when do I put the smaller bowl in the water and for how long does the water have to boil? & how long does it take for you to collect enough water in the small bowl?

as long as there is water in the pot

A way to speed this up is if you somehow suspend the floating bowl out of the water as with it floating around its heating and also probably evaporating the distilled water

Is this the distilled water use in floor cleaning (stem mop)
You mentioned this being cost-effective. Is it more cost-effective keeping an electric or gas burner on for a long time to make a small amount of distilled water versus buying a gallon jug of distilled water from the store?
Depends on how much you need at a particular time, doesn't it? Her method works in a survival situation ( substitute gas for fire wood) or if you need distilled water for a very brief specific time.
You might as well buy an electric water distiller if you need distilled water regularly.
