Easy steps.....
1. Fill large pot 1/3 with tap water
2. FLOAT collecting dish
3. Flame on, set to simmer
4. Place lid upside down on pot, and cover the pot while the water in the pot is still cold
5. Place a few handfuls of ice on the lid
6. When collecting dish is filled, skim the water out of the dish with a measuring cup

A lot of people talk about celiac disease and allergy.
But few people really thought of water maybe the problem. I am talking about heavily disinfected water. Which is claimed to be the safest drinking tap water. Rather than saying gluton is causing the problem, what about the drinking water is weakening our guts which made some of us allergy to gluten? Let's be open minded and explore further? There are discussions on why Europe has less gluten sensitivity issue than US.
Talking about poo and energy. In my country, we have the cleanest tap water which you can drink directly from it without getting sick because of contamination. I boiled it nonetheless to remove chlorine.
I am 45 this year and i had observed this. I have loose bowel all the time. And my body energy is low. Yes, my body is slightly weaker than average person.
But when i travelled to neighbouring country, in fears of water contaminations. We usually drink bottled distilled water, as much of the travellers is doing.
The finding is, i have normal bowel, firm and smooth. And i also experience higher body energy, less lethargic. Of course for my age and long term consuming water from my own country, i am not expecting the change of water to change my body energy from a 45 yo to a 16 yo kid. But i can feel that drinking bottled distilled water add less burden to my body.
Not to forget, all dishes i consumed from my country are using the same source of water. Be it soup, rice and congee all contain the same source of water.
So some of you may consider a change of drinking water.
I have so much to discuss on this topic, but us it consistent with my channel??

The ice speeds up the condensation because it cools the pan lid. This means, when the steam hits the lid, it cools down and condenses back into water! Steam/water vapour is just water that has risen above its boiling point, so when it cools, it turns back into water. Thanks for the video :)
Also as the ice melts it can seep back into the pot if the lid handle is leaking.
@@minerblue9641 That may happen, but that water is not distilled because it hasn't been through the steam process; the ice is made from non-distilled water so, if it leaks through, it contaminates the distilled water in the bowl. So, don't use a lid that would leak melting ice unless the ice is made from distilled water.
I guess you would have to worry about damaging the glass as well with heat discrepancy on surface to?
@@foggylog19 That glass should be tempered glass if intended for cooking so only something like maybe dry ice would crack it; even then it might not.
@@virginiamoss7045 it’s the condensation, the water rises up and leaves Particulates behind, however my electric distiller also filters that reconvened water as it drips into the container.

My grandson, at age TEN, became plagued with KIDNEY STONES. This is a condition I always associated with the elderly, but I was wrong! Between ages 10-14, he had had 6 episodes. An account of one of the episodes that he had when he was 14 was so agonizing to hear about, my entire family, young and old, male and female, were literally in tears. This particular episode pertained to what he went through passing one of these stones at the hospital. Kidney stones are shaped like a “goat head sticker” and are made of calcium. Calcium deposits is that hard water white build up you get in your steam iron or vaporizer, requiring the use of DISTILLED WATER ONLY. Well, I’m just a Nana with no medical background, but I CAN add 2+2. I started keeping him stocked him up on the 2 1/2 gallon containers of distilled water and his own Yeti water cup/container, explained my theory to my daughter, and my grandson hasn’t had a kidney stone since. From age 15 to now 20. At his last checkup at 17 with his pediatric nephrologist my daughter explained the change we had made to the doctor and accredited it to the absence of attacks. His nephrologist was quite pleased with the information, did some research and started recommending distilled water to his patients. Yay Nana!

This is absolutely fantastic. As a chemist, I’ve never seen a method as simple as this. The ice expedites the precipitation of the vapor. Excellent contraption with household products.
It's like when it's cold outside and warm inside water collects as vapor and condensation on the windows.

Without being complicated it’s a law of thermodynamics. Heat (The steam) is drawn to the coldest surface to turn back into liquid water as condensation. This is why old windows suffer condensation in winter months, how dehumidifiers work (Sucks in wet air and it hits a chilled metal plate and collects in the tray as it chills into droplets) and also how heat exchanger systems work - drawing hot stuff towards the cold stuff 👍 You might not have understood but your method is spot on

The mineral deal is a non issue. We get most of our minerals from the food we eat and the mineral content of drinking water varies so widely across the country that you can't be sure of any kind of consistency. The best upside to distilled is that it eliminates all chlorine and fluoride. My wife and I have been drinking nothing but distilled water for the last five years. I have chronic Kidney disease and have managed to avoid needing dialysis. When 1st diagnosed the Doc said I could go from 6 months to 2 years before needing dialysis.... I'm coming up on 5 years in July. I haven't passed any kidney stones either (they're no fun) since I've been on the distilled.

Yes!! Water is NOT a recognized source for dietary minerals anyway. The trace amounts removed won't affect health as long as you eat a fairly decent array of food. (Worried! Eat more spinach and broccoli 😀) The fact that it removes viruses and bacteria, heavy metals etc, is so worth it. Husband and I keep distilled on the counter for our daily consumption. 💪💯

This is perfect for those with a Cpap machine. For those who don't know what this is, it's a machine with a face mask you put on when you go to bed. It helps with sleep apnea, basically it will keeo you breathing! These machines need distilled water to humidify the air you breathe, and you don't want bacteria in this water because it will go into your lungs. I'll be able to make my own distilled water now thanks to this video. (No more skimping on it when I forget to go to the store and end up using tap water) thank you very much for the upload! 🙏🙏❤🙏🙏
Red Flag on CPAP machine, foam piece inside is cancerous and pushing that air with the foam breakdown into your lungs. Check out the law suits.

Came here just for this! I just picked up my first Cpap machine not even 45 minutes ago. Soon as I got home I Googled “what is distilled water” and then googled, “how to get distilled water”. This is the first video that came up for how to make it. And I’m so appreciative. I’ll be able to save myself a lot of cost buying distilled water and save myself the hassle of having to go to the store to buy it.

My only problem with this is that it takes a lot of water to make 1 gallon of distilled and with the time it takes you are using the energy of your stove to make it, so you really aren't saving money in the long run. Still kinda neat to make your own, but don't do it thinking your saving money. Electricity and gas (whichever type stove you have) are both expensive.
not cost effective at all, just buy and store it... or set it up out in sun all day, there plenty of effective effiecent ways to-do it buy sun poiwer...this is pretty old stuff, information been around scents ancient times. Blessings.

The ice helps to cool the lid (lower temperature) which allows for the steam to quickly condense (turn from gas to liquid) into pure liquid water (i.e. distilled water). Thank you for sharing !

I’m a naturopath doctor and I always recommend distilled water especially for certain people who’s mineral content is very high in the body because it does leach out those excess minerals however for people who need minerals they should be getting those from their food sources not necessarily from their water so even if someone drinks distilled water for a prolonged period of time they shouldn’t feel like they’re missing out on minerals unless they are simply not getting those in their food choices

However have a slight misunderstanding
The body draws organic minerals from the fresh foods and juices we take in
It can absorb inorganic minerals. It Cannot use them
1. All the fluids of the body are distilled water
2. The minerals in other waters are “inorganic” and cause many health problems The body cannot use inorganic minerals, so it stores them in various parts of the body
Ie. Stones in kidneys, gall bladder , prostate in fact any of the organs & glands of the body
Calcification deposits in joints causing inflammations pain & arthritis
Distilled water draws calcifications from the joints & it is passed from the body in the urine
Testing patients in the first 21 days after drinking distilled water only we find sediment levels are increased up by as much as 200%
This in turn allows the body to much more effectively draw the organic minerals necessary to life from the foods one eats
“The Choice Is Clear” by Dr Banik is a booklet available on Amazon that will give greater understanding on the subject

If this were true, how come when I take mineral supplements for cramps they go away, but when I stop the supplements they come back? If my body isn't using those inorganic minerals it should make no difference.

Did the same happen to you? He must be able to do it though else he wouldn't have filmed it to advise

This proves how important different frameworks are necessary for problem solving. As someone in stem I know why the ice helps, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to make at home distilled water cause I’m thinking of lab specific glassware that I can’t get. About 2 1/2 years ago I purchased an electric distiller from Amazon for about $100. It was one of the best purchases I have made in a long time. I have been distilling a gallon of water a day since I got it for me and my family. I can't figure out why distillers like the one I bought aren't sold at stores like Walmart. My family thought I was crazy when I got it, now they don't want any other kind of water. If you want distilled water, do yourself a favor and purchase one, you can't get any easier than pouring in a gallon of contaminated water and turning on a switch and ending with pure distilled water.

How do you clean the distiller?
@@narrowwaytolife4525 you can clean it with vinegar or there is a powder they include that you put in and fill it and run for 20 minutes then empty the rust water
I only cleaned mine for the first few months, after that I figured out that the scale just starts flaking off as it builds up. I just rinse the tank after every two or three gallons of use.

Did anyone mention that you should not use a "non stick pot" to boil water in?
I would suggest only using "Stainless Steel" to avoid those particles from the pot painted with the toxic non stick pot.

What you described is the chemistry set version of distillation. It's for distillation of small amounts of some chemical or essential oil. Solar water distillation looks more like this minus the ice. The electrical water distillation looks more like alcohol distillation. Regardless of the form it comes in, distillation works in the same way.
Lol. Sure he explaines it and demonstrates it halfway. But he doesn't show any results. You know why? Because it barely works. The water in the dish that fits inside the pot will evaporate at the same rate as the water in the pot itself. Plus to keep that lid cold enough you have to use a lot of ice. Replacing the ice with a cold pack doesn't work because it heats up way too fast.

@@wolfgangvondreckendorf4897 i have tried it and it worked fine, the water in the pot is closer to the heat source than the water in the bowl.
Edit: also, if you for example use a plastic bowl, the plastic will have some insulation properties and prevent some of the heat transfer from the boiling water to the distilled water it the bowl

There's 2 types of minerals , organic and inorganic. The former we get in food, the latter in the water. We do not need the inorganic ones in the water. They are the ones that cause stones in our organs.
So distilled water is the safest to drink because it has been stripped of the bad minerals.

Thanks! This can save folks a lot of money on all the machines out there that require distilled water. I would suggest rinsing out storage containers with distilled water first then storing distilled water in them to assure purity since contamination can occur if there is residue left in containers from previous processes such as washing with soaps or detergent. Few tips to add more to the wealth of information we share :
- you can replace ice cubes with ice packs to make the process cleaner/less wasteful
- you can also use the same contraption in those electric rice cooker/electric stockpots ''one pot'' appliances
The ice packs may not be sterile and plastic is no good.

@studiosinger Totally unnecessary. The ice pack should not come in contact with the distilled water. It is on the top of the lid. The water is beneath the lid. Unless you are exceptionally clumsy and cross contaminate, sterilizing the ice packs is a non-issue.

Thanks for this demo. I don't know why I didn't relate it to what I already learned long ago while thinking about 'prepping survival' tactics. This would be the same process if you did not have anything other than salt water. Just boil the salt water and collect that condensation to have drinking water. The salt stays in the bottom of the boiling pot and salt and mineral free water is collected.
I live in an extremely remote location and a lot of items are not available for purchase in our tiny store or even online for long periods. I was without cornstarch for about 6 months! Due to the increase of these kinds of DIY videos, I have learned to make so many things from scratch and most of them are ridiculously simple, like turning granulated sugar into powdered confectioner's sugar.
It can also be done without a heat source by using the sun. Its a much slower process but good to know for an emergency. You fill your large pot or bowl with water and place a small catching bowl inside. Then cover tightly with cling wrap and place a pebble in the middle so it causes a concave to let the drips run down into the small bowl. Leave in the sun.
@@nzmermaid I heard it years ago on a show about surviving on a hot sunny beach or desert? area - dig a deep hole and put plastic or tarp over the hole with weight in middle. Can't remember for sure which, or if both, but I'd try anything if no fresh water was around.
@@islandgal500 Yes for sure - also if you have a plastic bag, wrap it loosely around any green vegetation. Overnight the leaves do their thing and somehow release water that collects in the plastic bag. Everyone should learn simple ways. We have become very reliant on stores like you say - a lot can be done without or substituted.

Funny to think I was worrying about a water source in an emergency. It would never happen here (Pacific NW coastal rainforest) with the ocean out front and forest in back of property, it rains for part of the week for most of the year! Plenty of rainwater to gather along with the fish, crab, wild berries, mushrooms, venison... It is worth it.

Interesting video. I can understand the benefits of drinking water with contaminants taken out. My problem with distilled and even dubious bottled water is it tastes not only bland, but dead to me. I was raised with deep well water, (it was locally called iron water), and the taste was heavenly to me as a kid. I am sure it had other minerals in it. In fact the military did a study about soldiers from around our area, because they found they had way above average good teeth and ended up concluding it was because of the local water. In the summer the deep well water was nice and cold. Also When I went back to visit my grandparents I could not get enough of that water and lost weight and water retention from drinking it a lot. Who knows, what the quality of that water is today. I miss it.

Thanks for the video. I wanted to learn about this for 2 reasons:
1. I make soap. Distilled water is needed as an ingredient, & also it works way better than hard tap water for removing the soap left behind on the containers & utensils used in the process.
2. To water my succulents. They are supposed to do better with less alkalinity from the minerals in the hard water.

My holistic doctor as well as my teacher who is studying to be a doctor says that if you put a pinch of himalayan salt in your glass it puts all the minerals in it that you need. In fact even more than other types of water. You can order the mineral water testing kit off of Amazon to prove the point it is what they used to show us. And because this is so you can drink this water on a daily basis. They also say this water is so good because it has pulling agents in it. Now for you who think oh no salt, well this salt is good for you. It is not iodized salt which is not good for you. Research and find out for yourself. Also another very important note: when you drink a lot of water you wash out the salt out your body that you need because our bodies do need salt, but so by drinking distilled water with some himalayan salt you are being benefited for doing so.

Iodized salt is good for you, because iodine is needed by our thyroid, and since many people don’t include it in their diet the problem is solved by putting it in salt which everyone uses

Thanks for this helpful video. My personal opinion is if I had to do this for clean drinking water, I could add a little sea salt or pink Himalayan salt to decrease the pull of minerals from the body that can occur with drinking too much distilled water. Those natural salts are loaded with good minerals. (I might add a little potassium and magnesium powder too). I wouldn’t do this with regular table salt though. 😉👍

pink Himalayan sea salt or black salt have good source of minerals. after distilling the water add a good pinch of either salt to replenish
the minerals.
I had to switch to mountain Spring water after drinking distilled water. I got severe mineral deficiency even tho I take mineral supplements daily. Water absorbs and it will absorb your mineral stores. Distilled water has its uses, but I personally would not suggest drinking it if you have mineral deficiencies at all.

Salt is a poison, from ses, himalaya, no matter where it's from. Sodium on the contrary is fine and can be found in vegetable, green leaves in abundance. Sodium chloride (salt) is the cause of many diseases if not all.

Great video! Explanation for putting ice : the ice helps to absorb heat from the water vapour faster and so the steam condenses faster into water.. But the ice should not be put after the water starts boiling as it will quickly reduce the temp of the glass and it may crack.. To increase your yield u might also use a metallic lid on top, it will help transfer the heat to the ice faster and u will get more distilled water.

Awesome video! I am going to use the distilled water for homemade disinfectant with at least 70% isopropyl alcohol, a bit of hydrogen peroxide, and a lemon oil drops. Btw, the ice in the lid helps the vapors drop down in temperature to reach the dew point quicker, making vapors to condense. If I may share, things in the world exist in three states: solid (s), liquid/aqueous (aq), and gas/gaseous (g). Water boils, turns liquid (aq) into vapors (g). The steam/vapors are very light, rising to the top, hitting the lid. The ice on the lid makes the lid colder than the steam, which helps to drops the temperature of the steam to reach the condensation/dew point. That's the point where steam (g) turns back into water drops (aq) state. The steam turned into condensation then gets heavy, drops to the container in the pot.

I agree completely with what you are saying my friend. But to everyone watching this video especially young viewers please be warned that there is dangers to this method of distilling water. My thirteen year old daughter tried using this method for a school science project and let the glass lid get too hot when she put the ice on the lid it shattered. Thankfully she was not injured. So never should anyone ever add iced cubes to a hot piece of glass or any hot surface without expecting a violent reaction that could cause serious injury this video should have a warning
I advise adding the ice to the lid before the lid is heated up too hot

I do this and store it in ball jars, in fact I actually make it drip directly into the ball jar, it works perfectly because the pots handle fits inside the jar perfectly. Win-win, everything gets sterilized. I use it to rinse the Ph tester and storage is easy
5:45 bsically the ice is damn cold it makes the lid cold, the steam that touches the lid will be condensed alot faster so it will turn into distilled water alot faster :D

can't beat that clean fresh taste when it's ice cold! I've been using it for all my water needs. I can't take minerals or vitamins in pill form. It makes my intestines hurt. All ways has. But...the bottoms of my feet are baby soft. No more nasty thick calusy stuff on my feet. I feel way more refreshed. The best way to get water into your body is by eating high water content food. Water melon, strawberries and the like.
Maybe I should try pedialyte to give me minerals.
The distilled water gets toxins out of your body like flouride.

It’s always a good idea to know skills like this so we don’t always rely on going to a store to purchase something we can make ourselves. Saving time and money is the best. As a busy mom I can’t tell you how many projects have screeched to a halt because of a missing item that requires loading up the whole gang, driving, stores, distractions and inevitably the loss of the motivation and enthusiasm for said project. I’ve had this happen when we didn’t have distilled water and I had no idea I could have kept the momentum going and completed the task at hand so quickly and easily. Now I know and am grateful for you sharing your knowledge.

Thank you! I used your method but with a slow cooker / crock pot and it worked very well. It produced more distilled water than the stovetop trial but that may be due to a better seal between the crock pot and upside-down cover.

Great idea my friend. Just a friendly reminder that stainless steel and glass would best be used in this process as plastic and non stick have their own toxic materials that leach into your foods/water especially in a heating process such as this. Great distilled water method!
You should put the ice before it heats up or else the glass can break
Using glass at all, can cause this to break. Because the one side of the glass is going to be very hot, and the other side is going to be very cold. It might not break the first time, might not break the second time, but, eventually, this will cause the glass to break.

Tempered glass can withstand rapid temp changes
Glass tops that are made for cooking will not break with a little steam hevk witha lot of steam

There may be an additional factor, and that is the metal rim & handle of the cookpot lid, but I don't know the mechanism, just the results: even as a kid, my mother would make iced tea by the glass before pre-made mixes were a thing. First time pouring hot tea over ice, the glass cracked immediately (obviously because... duh). One time she was in a hurry and didn't let the tea cool, but she had a long handled metal spoon in the glass, touching both the bottom of the glass and the rim--the glass did not crack. She used the method with the spoon daily and, as long as the metal spoon was in the glass, the glass never cracked, even when pouring hot tea over ice. I have noticed that every single glass cookpot lid I own has a rim and a handle that are made of metal, so I'm not science-y enough to know the reason metal seems to be a factor, only that my repeated observations over 40 years or so have demonstrated that metal does seem to be a factor in preventing the break in the glass.

This is like a version of a solar still that you might use in the dessert in a survival situation using a sheet of plastic, a hole and a vessel to catch the water in. Obviously this version is much faster. The ice makes the top colder so as the steam hits it. It turns back into water droplets faster.

When liquid water gains enough energy (from the stove's heat source) it becomes gas (vapor/steam). The colder the lid, the faster the vapor will give off that gained energy to become liquid again & so drip down into the bowl.
More uses for distilled water:
Fish tank water
Cleaning medical devices, baby bottle warmers, coffee pots, humidifiers, etc
I have a 500 gallon fish tank and have always been told to top off the water with distilled water. About 9 months ago there was NO distilled water to be found. All stores were out of distilled water.

The stuff that's left behind after the distilling process is done is so nasty and smells kinda like swamp water... it's the remnants of all the crap that shouldn't be in the water, especially for use in my humidifiers. I also have well water and live on the water off of a river that opens to the Atlantic Ocean.

This is a cool technique for those who maybe live somewhere where purchasing distilled water might be difficult or inconvenient! I started to try this for myself though, and quickly came to conclusion that for the amount of time I would have to run my stove to do this, I'm probably not saving any money vs just buying distilled water for $1 a gallon from the supermarket, lol.
