  • Kalimpong, a bustling busy town set on the foothills and deep valleys of the Himalayas is one of the important tourist destinations of the hilly region. The town is at present a district of the state of West Bengal. But once upon a time, in the historical books, we find it in the Kingdom of Sikkim and then again under the rule of Bhutan Empire. How did it become a part of it? What could be the origin of the word ‘Kalimpong?’ Who ruled in this beautiful landscape of lush greenery? What was the situation among the kings in early 18th century? Let’s find out with The Cord’s exclusive on “How Kalimpong was once a part of Bhutan?”
THE CORD is a new-age independent reporting channel aiming to provide the best possible content, facts, and reality for viewers worldwide. I just hope that Bengalis don't exploit these regions (Kalimpong and Darjeeling) and impose their language on them....Just like UP was exploiting the Gharwal region (now Uttarakhand), Punjab exploiting the Himachal region and Bihar exploiting the Dhanbad region before getting separated. Also, Sikkim has already fallen...u will barely find any Lepcha, Bhutia, or Limboo there with any representation at any place, all have been occupied by Nepalese immigrants. Even the native languages of Sikkim have already died and they speak only Nepali.

Wtf ,What was your motive and where did you drag you message at last ,Why are you so jealous or angry for Nepali people's,don't you even know that Sikkim, Darjeeling & Kalimpong belongs to Bhutia ,Lepcha & Nepali ..we have been living peacefully since the history..
You are a peace of shit with narrow mentality, grow up kiddo ..
Nepalies are not Immigrants,What did Gorkhas did for the motherland India ..could you able to pay back those sacrifices,Bloods ,Life's, ...The Lepchas & Bhutias who lives in Darjeeling & Kalimpong still support for GORKHALAND,They think themself as Gorkhas ,May be Sikkimese Bhutia & Lepchas don't think them self as Nepali but They still love them as own brother & have been living a life peacefully with Nepalies. intermarriages are so common in them ..but you are a poison who is trying to break the peace Among the Tribes of Darjeeling, Sikkim & Kalimpong..
Don't warry you gonna pay back for your deeds ,Coz God is watching over you and your works .. Believe me bro

Initiative to explore the history of Sikkim is indeed great step.
Sikkim as an independent kingdom was ruled by Lepchas before the advent of Chogyal dynasty that started in 1604 . Before Chogyal dynasty Lepcha king Ponu Hobam was the supreme authority. He was being assisted by Thekongtek a wise and intelligent person. Lepcha is actually the real master of Sikkim . Most of the name of places in Sikkim and Darjeeling and even kalimpong are in Lepcha language. For example , Sonada a small town in Darjeeling means a place of shelter of wild bear. Kurseong a big town on way to Siliguri means a place of white orchid blooming area. Mirik means a place where a wild fire occured. Pokriabong means huge size bamboos grown place. List ate innumerable.

So you also agree that during the time of King Tenzung before Chhoddar's exile to Tibbet present day Kalimpong and Dooars regions were part of Sikkim. ? BEARING IN MIND THE STRUGGLE OF THE Gorkhas for a separate State I would strongly suggest that according to the historical facts Darjeeling Silgadi Kalimpong Dooars should be reunited with Sikkim and given a new name Bharatiya Gorkhaland on the basis of.majority Gorkhali Population in the whole region. That will give the Gorkhas Identity & Dignity as Indians.

Limboo is part of Gorkha community. FYI.Current development is tension in Sikkim. History is that the majority population of Gorkhas votes (whose mother language is Nepali) using which govt of india tactically added Sikkim country as 22nd state of India in 1975 but in return Govt of India and Supreme court labelled this Gorkha community still as "foreigners from Nepal". There is nothing painful as this. Govt of India should fix it's mentality before it's too late.

@KingchumAdenmooRong Bro you know that in Kalimpong , Damber Singh Gurung Chowk is the place from Kalimpong from were Gorkha leader came to forefront in freedom movement of India . He was the founder of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League , a political party , in 1943 , before India got Independent from British rule . So , till now people of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration ( GTA ) in India are asking for separate Indian State Gorkhaland . Do you agree the fact . Truth is truth , we just can't deny the fact . If you talk about Anglo - Gurkha War also , then Kalimpong , Darjeeling , Terai - Dooars was part of Sikkim . Before Anglo - Bhutan War in 1864 , Kalimpong was part of Sikkim , not of Bhutan . Go through history thoroughly . Even Nepal captured the part of Sikkim in the past if we know the history . But later Nepal captured Sikkim's portions were returned back to Sikkim , now India . That's why GTA are asking for Gorkhaland . Do yo understand what I'm saying . It's just a simple logic .

and bhutias, no doubt hilly region of darjeeling sikkim was majorly inhabited by lepchas but moutain region across the himalaya is has always been originally inhabited by tibetic people which other than archeological evidences can found in the folk song of other local tribe like lepchas, imboos, in nepal gurungs, magar, in uttarkhand and himalchal bist and negis etc. so yes lepchas can be considered true aboriginal tribe of sikkim only when if you create a new state by totally giving up the khangchendzgonga base region( north sikkim)

Aboriginal of west sikkim, south Sikkim , west darjeeling r limboo, for east , north sikkim, east darjeeling r lepcha. There is also record of mangar in sikkim, darjeeling after limboo, lepcha. For terai of darjeeling it's dhimal( plain limboo), bodo. Then Bhutias founded sikkim with kirat, lepcha, bhutia treaty. Lepcha not sole aborigin. It's just that lepchas most place falls in todays sikkim, darjeeling. While limboos 70 pc teritorry went to gorkha kingdom, 30 pc to sikkim, darjeeling. If u went to which is earliest tribe, it could be limboo too considering bigger population of limboo n called kirat historically. Name given by plain indo Aryan to eastern himalaya people in ancient times. It might be possible some lepcha clans absorbed to limboo.

Well for real Kalimpong, Darjeeling (Darjyolyang), parts of sikkim were inhabitants to Lepchas not Bhutan actually, it was only in late 1500/1600 Bhutan monarchy apprehended sikkim and parts of North Bengal after execution of last Lepcha king "Punu Gabeo Achyok" In Damsang fort (present pedong) then later joined as a part of India in may 16 1975.!!
Perhaps I'm glad towards your work/Research.
