Exploring Sivasagar in Assam and the Ahom Kingdom | India's Forgotten Pyramids

- Assam’s Ahom Dynasty was one of the longest living dynasties in India yet not much is known about them outside Assam. They ruled for almost 600 years and successfully overcame 17 attacks by the Mughals in Delhi.
When I heard about the Ahoms, a few questions came to my mind immediately. Where did they come from? How did they become so successful? And how after 600 years of rule, they suddenly disappeared - are there still any Ahom Royals around in Assam?
In today’s video, we’ll cover their first capital Charaideo, and some of their other cities like Garhgaon, Sibsagar (or Sivasagar) and Jorhat. In Charaideo they also built their scared pyramids to bury the dead called Maidan. In Sibsagar they created stunning architecture and finally their last capital was Jorhat.

The earliest reference to Habung comes in the 10th-century copper plate grant of Ratnapala of the Pala dynasty . when it was a province (visaya) of the Kamarupa Kingdom with Brahmin settlements. It is known that Sukaphaa, the Ahom king, spent a few years in Habung before finally settling down at Charaideo in 1253.

Ghanashyam was a goria muslim architect in that time..
Ahoms didnot disappear suddenly. It was a downfall to British politics.
You said that wall are made from bricks... It is wrong walls are made from sticky rice ,egg, fish etc and many natual things are added to made that walls..
Ahoms didn't suddenly disappear, it was a systematic painful downfal of our past which has affected the lives of all assamese even till now, both in positive and negative ways.
There’s, of course, a lot for me to learn about the Ahoms. I would love to read more about the legacy of their downfall in Assam. I only heard good things about them and their rule, but I’m sure there’s much more to learn.
@@shiromani557 just read the reference you shared - quite informative.
😅 we didn't disappear we are here dont worry

Purnanondo buraghuhain was the reason.... He invited British to stop the Maan invasion.
'Talatal Ghar' was supposed to be made as puzzle for saving them from enemies as told by my elders. The uniqueness about it: when you go downstairs you will feel that you are climbing up. In the structure unique things were used like sticky rice, duck egg and the egg shells. The reason of the four storeys were being blocked was, as long ago some couple went to visit that place and got lost on the lower section of the structure and never came out. They couldn't find the body so they covered the lower section of the structure and it is still not allowed to go down. I don't know about the lost couple story and the puzzle is true or not but the lower section is completely closed with concrete I saw it with my own eyes 15 years back. May be they must have opened it now for tourists. I'll check when I visit there next time.
You also forgot to mention that 'Shiva dol' temple's top most dome is made of gold the other two temples also had the dome of gold which was stolen by the Brits. They also managed to bring down the Shiv dol dome which fell in the lake beside it however before that could be taken out we got our independence and they left it there later it was placed back on the top. I don't know how much truth is there in it; I was told by my cousins about this story who stays in Shivsagar.
Shivsagar is now filled with illigal immigrant of Bangladesh so you'll see lots of mosques near the Shivadol and even the shopkeeps. Big request to all youtubers to show that in your blogs and appeal to government to look into it. They make fake IDs to reside there. I stopped going there from past 15 years as I felt that within few years I felt like I'm either in Bangladesh or Pakistan. I don't have any issue with religion but I can't stand these illigal immigrants, who have easily captured our lands.

Why bangladeshi are allowed in assam they should be kicked we really need bold government now ?
These bangladeshi are setting in Jammu and up also
Thank you very much for showing the monuments built by the Tai Ahom kings on your channel. Most people in India do not know about the Ahoms who defeated the Mughal army 17 times. The Government of India should include the Tai Ahom Empire in school, college and university textbooks so that everyone in India can learn about the Ahom rule.
I completely agree! It was such a phenomenal dynasty and unfortunately I learnt about them only when I visited Upper Assam. I really hope o can do more to spread the word 🙌
Exactly, we exist as Assamese people due to them, otherwise most of us would have been decendents of Mughals...
@@SiddharthaJoshiFilms *My Mother is BuraGohain and my Father is BorPhukan, we are here in Guwahati, We haven't left our ancestral homes. We use to visit them*
Indian education system only focus on Mughal 😶
17 times not Mughals but Muhammadans in all out of which 4 or 5 were Turkish governors of Delhi sultanate and rest were Mughal
I think Ahom & Naga relationship should be rebuilt again like past . Upper Assam and border Nagas are very hospitable people. Great history of Ahom’s 👍🏻
I think Ahom Dynasty is coming to limelight in last few years outside Assam and it is getting much needed exposure to the rest of india. It is high time that a chapter is dedicated to history of Ahoms in every state's history curriculum. many foreigners are doing research on Ahom Dynasty. i knew a few from Australia, New Zealand and Thailand.
Absolutely! I’m so happy I got to learn about them and had the opportunity to share about them with the world ❤️🙌❤️
Proud to be an AHOM😍🙏🏻❤️.....Thank youu soo muchh brother for representing our Ahom dynasty in a very beautiful way!🙏🏻❤️

As a scholar who is working on Ahoms and who is yet to visit these places, this video is like a gift in disguise. I have read about these places in books and finally getting to see it properly is amazing in itself. Beautifully captured and told. Thank you, and keep making vlogs.

Thank you for leaving such a beautiful comment! I feel so good about making this video (wasn’t sure if anyone wanted to watch a history focused tarvel video), but your comment just makes my day! Wishing you the best for your research and I hope you visit there soon :)

@@SiddharthaJoshiFilms Thanks a lot for the wish. And I am sure that people would have an interest in history, especially the one which we don't find in conventional books so yeah keep going.

Last time during Bihu we visited Guwahati. Great place, will definitely visit these ancient capitals. Great video! The flora very much resemble our native place in East Godavari district in Andhra
Kachari Kingdom was established in the 9th century. When Sukapha established his kingdom in the 12th century, Kachari kingdom was said to have already extended along the southern banks of the Brahmaputra river, from Dikhow river in Sivasagar to the Kallang river in Nagaon and included the valley of Dhansiri and also the parts of the present-day Dima Hasao district. The Dikhow river was said to be the boundary between the Kachari kingdom and the Ahom Kingdom.
Indeed , the Kacharis were already there when the Ahoms arrived.
Oh.... Sir...... It's really true..... That time there were three dynasty.... Ahom, Kachari and Koch in North East India....by the way, thank you so much for this valuable information 💪💪🙏🙏
Great work Siddhartha. Love the way you have paced your clips covering all important aspects of the places. I wish the Assam tourism department uses your work to promote the rich geographic and cultural heritage of the place. Look forward to see more such videos in the time to come.

This video brings back lots of memories😞my school, my classmates, My teachers, the foods..it's was 15 years back see how times flies😔 My school took us to this places for study tour. Went inside one of the tomb went up to many buildings. What questions my head is that one of the building I forgot the name, the building was massive but did not have pillars as if the whole building was curve out..... Ahoms monuments are worth visiting❤😊
Thanks for sharing your story! Childhood memories are the best 🤗
Best thing about the video is that within a span of 17 min he covered almost all the places. Really amazing and distinctive information about ASSAM in total. Loved your work!

Ahom dynasty se pehele bhi aur dynasties thi Assam pe,uske bare me toh koi baat hi nahi karta.I hope they get the recognition as Ahom dynasty getting these days
Thats the bitter truth brother. The rulers of Kamrup were later on defeated by Koch and Ahom kings only because they were not united. I'm pretty sure you're either a Koch or a Kalita🙃
Well come to sivasagar Assam...Ahoms played a great role in building today's Assam. Prior to their coming ,there was no written history of Assam. They introduced new architectural techniques. Eggs, sticky rice ,jaggery etc were mixed to be used as cement for construction.
Absolutely! 🙌🙌
@Roshmita Gogoi Really? 😮
@@babablacksheephaveyouanywo2929 ya bro❤ it is surprising isn't it?
No written history of assam before the arrival of ahoms?
There was a kingdom which ruled most of northeast and it was called kamarupa kingdom. Don't think that before the ahoms, assam didn't have anything.
@@ghs89of course there's no written history of Assam before Ahoms. Are there any?

Thank you so much - your comment just made my day ❤️ I’m from Uttrakhand, and yes my Hindi is good as it’s my mother tongue ☺️
By the way, the talatal ghar is not a palace. The 4 storeys that are underground lead to a bunch of many different tunnels. One of the many routes leads to the dikhow river. The other routes lead to nowhere. It was constructed so that the king and his family can safely escape in case of an invasion. The different routes are meant to confuse the enemy.
And mainly kings were resided in a bamboo and wood mixed beautiful house....they mostly didn't use brick houses

If im not wrong 'shunga shaawl' is originally called 'khaulaam' by the Tai tribes of Arunachal. They even enjoy sticky rice wrapped in leaves thats almost always served alongwith boiled veggies. many traditional delicacies are also made of sticky rice, they cultivate them once every year which is their main crop.the Tai Ahoms and Tai khamtis are both Tais of the same lineage, maybe that explains the similarities of their cusines.

Ahoms were slowly assimilated into the general population after the royal and noble families converted to Hinduism. Smaller related communities like Tai Khampti, Pakhes, Aitons, Siams etc have kept kept their traditions and languages somewhat
