- In this video we are going to take a look at, and make keys for, a wood double hung window lock. These locks were typically found on older houses and sometimes called sash locks.
I had a house just a few weeks ago with about 20 of these on them and every single one, painted over one way screws so no choice but to make keys by impressioning. Customer had a very typical 1980’s add on to the house so there ended up being three different keys for all of his. Luckily most were on one key (the originals)
So no, one key doesn’t work them all for those consumers that are invariably going to send me a email asking for a key to be mailed to them. Call a locksmith, if they don’t know how show them this video (which will probably piss them off)

I took Hank Spicer classes back in the day. He told us his daughter impressioned a GM sidebar lock.

Great video. I remember having these latches on our windows growing up, but I have never seen one with a lock before. I can just imagine trying to impression one next to what I suspect is thin single pain glass.
For some of us that aren't as lucky as guessing how far down and over a 3 is in position 4, another way to do this would be to use our code machine and just take the first mark which looks to be in position 3 and cut a one depth there, if it marks again, cut a two depth there, etc. I find it really hard to nibble a small amount using the Lishi cutters. In my younger days, the masters would do it exactly as Jason did, but if it wasn't smooth enough they would just file the top of the plug until it became smooth, which of course increased the number of operating keys a scosh. As always, thanks Jason for sharing your knowledge.
I always used a file. After it was made I would try to cut the key by code. If not I would just copy the key on a new blank and send them on their way. I'm an automotive locksmith since the 80's. I was great at impressioning not so good at picking locks. Sadly we don't impression car locks any more. I still have my Framon impressioning handle. Now we just either call in for codes or get it from NASTF. Of course after that program the transponder. If you told me this is where it would end up in the 80's I wouldn't have believed it. We make a lot more money but I kind of miss the old days. Curtis clippers and my Framon #2.

I saw an old forum thread I believe it was where he made 6 of those Lishi Duplicators and they were stamped 2018. It looked like that batch were done in more or less a small machine shop and he made some before that using a drill press, hack saw and other hand tools. I always wanted to build one as he posted measured plans and later and some cad drawings. Vice Grips work, but the Fox Duplicator is certainly better and to me it has a huge cool factor.
