The Artist is in my top ten personal favorites of all time. I just fell in love with it. It's a French film too. Romantic and a real love story. Tastefully done.
On The Waterfront. also Sunset Blvd. All About Eve. The Philadelphia Story. Raging Bull. Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Some Like It Hot. Citizen Kane. The Apartment.
I can't really choose my favorite b&w movie but here some of my favorites Sunset boulevard Citizen kane It's a wonderful life Casablanca 12 angry men Schindler's list (he didn't say classic, he said b&w) The man who wasn't there (the most underrated movie of all time)
Favourite black and white films: 'Marty', 'The Big Sleep', 'The Sea Hawk', 'Casablanca' and too many others to mention. Black and white can be incredibly dramatic and beautiful and shouldn't be a barrier to anyone watching a film.
Chris, you were so right about this movie. Amazing! This was definitely one of the best of 2011. This is going to go down as one of my all time favorites. I actually think you undersold it a bit, but I understand it is a hard sell for people who are used to conventional movies. Those who are on the fence about seeing it should definitely do so. It will not disappoint.
this movie was a real surprise for me, especially because I was a teenager at the time when I normally would have been really bored by movies like this.
Singing in the rain! (is it B/W?) Elements of that plot seems to be adressed in this one, in a way. Since I LOVE dancing and kinda grew up with the Fred Astaire and Gene Kelley-movies on the small round-cornered black-and-white TV, these are my favorites. Not silent, and probably in color, but for me then they were in B/W.
The only problem I had with the film was the sudden use of a very famous theme from Bernard Herrmann's 'Vertigo' score for the flim's first climax, which was really distracting as it didn't fit in the rest of the music score and took me out of the film during that sequence. Other than that, great film.
There are so many, so I'll just mention a few of my favorites: Dr.Stranglove, Metropolis, Night of the Living Dead, Seven Samurai, Citizen Kane, Psycho, Casablanca, Eraserhead, Raging Bull, the Elephant Man, and of course 12 Angry Men. Nice moves by the way! (^_-)
Psycho is my favorite film of all time, and Casablanca, Rebecca, and Brief Encounter are some of my other favorites. There are so many to choose from, though. It really bugs me that so many people are put off by a movie being shot in black and white. Many times it adds to the tone and atmosphere of the film and sucks you in. I wish more directors nowadays would consider using it.
Ten Little Indians (1965) Was sat at home in the summer holidays ill and this came on, I love a good crime thriller and this was so great and had me trying to work out what was happening to whole way through. Really recommend a watch.
My wife and I saw this movie in a theater. She'd never seen a silent movie in a theater before. She was very self-conscious because she felt like when she was unwrapping a piece of candy, the sound reverberated all over the auditorium.
Although 12 Angry Men is wonderful, my favorite black and white movie is Harvy starring Jimmy Stewart. Possibly the first ever black and white I seen as a kid and I revisit it every few years. It just leaves me with a smile on my face and spring in my step. I also enjoy Psycho and Emma, two splendid Hitchcock flicks.
I think without a doubt my favortie B&W film would have to be Psycho (1960). There are so many others but I was really into the plot and suspense and the atmosphere. Janet Leigh is gorgeous and Anthony Perkins is delightfully creepy. The ending is also perfect as well as the music and the famous shower scene. That's one movie from the B&W days that holds up in my opinion, as far as the tension and suspense. Hitchcock was a master!
oh wait... DOH... my favorite black/white film is by far schindlers list, one of the greatest films ever made imo!... and its black and white but also from a colo era... there are only red on a girls clothes that is all! ^^ love that film, such a beautiful piece of art, after you watched it you cant comprehend how cruel people can be
My favorite Black and white films is the original Cape Fear, Inherit the Wind and Psycho. My two favorite silent films are Phantom of the Opera and Nosferatu which I have on a double sided dvd
its a wonderfull life... havent seen many black/white films though... :) just because it is a christmas classic that i really enjoy watching on the holidays, its too cliche to be a 10, but i surely enjoy watching it every year
You know that doing your own black and white parody really isn't funny anymore, but goodness me I am so looking forward to this. Luckily I have to go and see it at my local independant cinema so I feel good financing that.
I think The Artist was flawless in what it set out to be, a tribute to the old silent film era of Hollywood. However, the execution of the plot didn't completely live up to my expectations from the trailer and I'm a hardcore film buff myself and found it a little uninteresting at times. I still think it is a marvelous film, just not my taste. Still, go see it if you get the chance! It's worth at least one viewing!
As I watched this Silent film unfold, I got "A Star is Born"/"Singin' in the Rain" vibes. My favorite black-and-white film? There are so many, but "Casablanca" (1942) makes my day. For the just-passed Holiday season, "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) or one of the many versions of "A Christmas Carol" will do as well. "Belfast" and "C'mon C'mon" (2021) are recent films that show off the power of monochrome.
when I first saw this on TV I thought it was a super old movie, until I see john goodman and my mind was fucked for a minute
That's fantastic. XD
The Artist is in my top ten personal favorites of all time. I just fell in love with it. It's a French film too. Romantic and a real love story. Tastefully done.

Schindler's list (he didn't say classic, he said b&w)
The man who wasn't there (the most underrated movie of all time)
Breathless / Strangers On A Train / Ed Wood / Schindler's List
"Nosferatu" (1922) oldest surviving vampire film. manages to be very chilling even with no color or sound.
Favourite B+W films? Metropolis, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, All Quiet on The Western Front, Paths of Glory, Dr Strangelove.
I adored this film.
mine is also 12 Angry Men
Favorite black and white film is Casablanca
Yes. It's the best.
And 6 years on we've still got the same issues. At least this time the police officer got charged with manslaughter in a timely fashion.
🦊
This is one of my favorite films but the story is suspiciously a lot like singing in the rain . Which is fine with me since I love that movie too.
Favourite black and white films: 'Marty', 'The Big Sleep', 'The Sea Hawk', 'Casablanca' and too many others to mention. Black and white can be incredibly dramatic and beautiful and shouldn't be a barrier to anyone watching a film.
Favorite B & W films--Casablanca, Manhattan and Dr. Strangelove, for sure
My favorite black and white movie is Seven Samurai
Favorite black and white film: To Kill a Mockingbird
It reminded me of Singin' in the Rain
My favorite black and white movie is The Third Man starring Orson Welles, One of the best suspense films I've ever seen.
So... this IS one of your favorites of the year? Just wondering, because it wasn't in your tribute video
My favorite B&W film is "Ikiru" by Akira Kurosawa.
And many others.
Favorite black and white no sound film for me is the 1922 Nosferatu
My fav B&w film of this decade is I think The white Ribbon...
John Goodman likes movies within movies ( "Matinee" ), huh?
"Notorious", "12 angry men", "Witness for the prosecution" and of course "Psycho"
Holy hell! Chris was that actually you mike Jacksoning it!?!?!
This comment has not aged well😂
Paths of Glory by Kubrick
Does Sin City count as a B/W film? Because if it does, that is my pick
My favorite black and white film is of course Psycho, with Strangers On a Train and 12 Angry Men being tied for second.
Chris, you were so right about this movie. Amazing! This was definitely one of the best of 2011. This is going to go down as one of my all time favorites. I actually think you undersold it a bit, but I understand it is a hard sell for people who are used to conventional movies. Those who are on the fence about seeing it should definitely do so. this movie was a real surprise for me, especially because I was a teenager at the time when I normally would have been really bored by movies like this.
My favorite black-and-white film is Seven Samurai! Great Review!
@ChristStuckmann I'll be seeing the two leads later this month in Santa Barbara at the 27th Annual Film Festival
Singing in the rain! (is it B/W?) Elements of that plot seems to be adressed in this one, in a way. Not silent, and probably in color, but for me then they were in B/W.
Just watched The Artist again and came to see your thoughts on it, looking good dude
The only problem I had with the film was the sudden use of a very famous theme from Bernard Herrmann's 'Vertigo' score for the flim's first climax, which was really distracting as it didn't fit in the rest of the music score and took me out of the film during that sequence. Other than that, great film.
Mine is Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times. I need to get the Criterion
Agreed 12 Angry Men is a great film
There are so many, so I'll just mention a few of my favorites: Dr.Stranglove, Metropolis, Night of the Living Dead, Seven Samurai, Citizen Kane, Psycho, Casablanca, Eraserhead, Raging Bull, the Elephant Man, and of course 12 Angry Men. Nice moves by the way! (^_-)
The Artist is such a fantastic film, I was surprised its not just an A.
My favorite B&W film is The Elephant Man, one that was of course deliberately filmed that way.
My favorite black and white films include Raging Bull, Faust, In a Lonely Place and From Here to Eternity.
Choosing a favorite B&W film is extremely hard since most of the greatest films of all time are B&W but...
The Rules of The Game or 8 1/2
Psycho is my favorite film of all time, and Casablanca, Rebecca, and Brief Encounter are some of my other favorites. There are so many to choose from, though. Ten Little Indians (1965)
Was sat at home in the summer holidays ill and this came on, I love a good crime thriller and this was so great and had me trying to work out what was happening to whole way through. Really recommend a watch.
Holy shit I never would have pegged Chris for such an amazing dancer!
This film is such a hidden gem, I loved it!
My wife and I saw this movie in a theater. She'd never seen a silent movie in a theater before. She was very self-conscious because she felt like when she was unwrapping a piece of candy, the sound reverberated all over the auditorium.
does schindlers list count? either that or psycho
Looking back at Chris now if feels like he's never changed.
can't decide on one so i'll name a few: la jetee, psycho, dr. strangelove, path of glory, zelig, and my personal guilty pleasure, carnival of souls.
Man Bites Dog is not too shabby either.
Nice intro!
I'm glad you liked the movie. I personally loved it so much! I'm glad you didn't give it a B+, because I know it deserves better.
blanca nievves is an also silent movie which was shot before the artist but it could notfind a distributor until the artist became a hit
What the hell am I talking about? My favourite B & W is the greatest film ever made, which is The Battle of Algiers.
I'm done.
Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast (1946) and Orpheus (1949) are in a class by themselves no other films can touch or even approach.
I’m sorry but A-??? Are you joking!? Rewatch the film man
Too low? The film is a masterpiece.
Nosferatu, my favorite movie of all time!
I think without a doubt my favortie B&W film would have to be Psycho (1960). There are so many others but I was really into the plot and suspense and the atmosphere. Un Chien Andalou also fills a hole now that I come to think about it.
"Raging Bull" is pretty much the best movie ever made :) I absolutely love "The Artist" as well. Imo deserves an A+
My favourite B&W film? The Battle of Algiers. It's one seriously intense film.
My favorite Black and white films is the original Cape Fear, Inherit the Wind and Psycho. My two favorite silent films are Phantom of the Opera and Nosferatu which I have on a double sided dvd

You know that doing your own black and white parody really isn't funny anymore, but goodness me I am so looking forward to this. Luckily I have to go and see it at my local independant cinema so I feel good financing that.
Paths of Glory for me dude and I loved this film too
i absolutely hate how most of the bad reviews of this movie are people that say "sound doesn't work in this movie, big bad"
I think The Artist was flawless in what it set out to be, a tribute to the old silent film era of Hollywood. My favorites will always be Singing in the Rain and Shop Around the Corner
My favorite black and white movie is Psycho. Also The Innocents is really good as well.
the third man is my personal favorite black and white movie.
as well as singing in the rain, the plot is very similar to hugo, a star is born, and sunset boulevard
A quick trivia: Did you know that the Angelika Film Centre was going to be closed down a couple of years ago? However, Tarrentino revived it.
8 1/2
