ESPN The Season: Colorado Avalanche 2003-04 [Full Documentary]

- Similar to HBO's 24/7, ESPN's "The Season" focuses on one team during the course of it's season and playoffs.
The 2003-04 Colorado Avalanche were supposed to win the Stanley Cup after acquiring superstar free agents Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya. Expectations were very high not only in Denver, but also in the Avalanche locker room, but the retiement of Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy and lots of injuries to starplayers as Kariya and Peter Forsberg let the team struggle during most parts of the season. This documentation follows the Avs players, coaches and management staff and provides rare behind the scenes looks and exclusive interviews, sights and sounds.
Check out the Avs halloween party, Patrick Roy's jersey retirement, how General Manager Pierre Lacroix made his Trade Deadline deals and much more. - Спорт
Roy should’ve played one more season with this team they definitely would’ve won the cup that year
I never understood why Roy didn't just come back for one more season once they started turning into a super team (on paper). He was still playing really good and may have been enough to push them over the top in the playoffs.
That said, Aebischer had a really solid regular season - slightly better than Roy's last year, so he wasn't the issue with the team. I just think Roy's conn Smythe winning ways may have been helpful.
forsberg, karyia, sakic, selanne, roy, blake, wow this team was amazing
Christian löfman roy was retired bro
kk ty:)
+Christian löfman
Hejduk, Foote, Tanguay....
Christian löfman I blame Granato for this. If you noticed in this entire documentary, he didnt know how to handle the pressure very well. He panicked, he bled too much emotion, and he fell fast.
Christian löfman Roy retired
RIP Karlens Skrastins, the NHL's ironman defenceman
TheJLJuke and Ruskin Salei, and Marek Svatos...
RIP Marek Svatos also part of the organization but didn't play until after the lockout.
Never forget and RIP to all the people that perished because of that tragedy
@@bardicus1322 not true, he played in the end of the season and the playoffs
20 years later, and I just randomly remembered this Tommy Salo trade scene but had no idea what it was from, lol. Thanks so much for uploading this!
This is probably the greatest team ever on paper.
02 wings
And yet not that good on the ice
Edmonton
No goalie
Big thank you for uploading this, I remember catching the last 10 minutes on ESPN when it aired but never saw it again and could never find it and forgot about it until stumbling upon this video a few days ago.
Those Avs-Red Wings games in the 90's were the best fucking hockey games I've ever seen. If you're too young to remember, just look them up.
hockyjocky4 ohhhh I have.... I was born during the second round of the 1997 playoffs against the Oilers lol
I'm a wings fan but holly fuck Peter F. Was a beaut.
Thank you for loading this, Jim Cummins was awesome and cool guy.
Need more of these documentarys
'03-'04 Aves will always be one of the best teams to not win the cup....what a shame!
Also, wow. They really dropped the ball on covering the Bertuzzi-Moore incident. If only HBO had been filming this.
Oh man ... thanks ... this was one amazing team. There was pure talent on every position. I once shook hands with #21 in a nightclub during summer brake and did not wash it for two weeks. Didn't even wank of .. too much respect.<
They should have won at least two more stanley cups. The dynasty that never was.
What a bullshit story
This is AWESOME! I have the 2nd half of this on an old VHS somewhere but I'm excited to be able to watch the whole thing again from the start! Thanks so much to the poster! The good days!
Thank you so much for uploading this. I've been looking for the full version basically since forever. Hopefully it doesn't gets deleted lol!
Will never be anyone like Forsberg!
Sakic and forsberg then kariya and sealane wow!
Not an Avs fan but love this stuff. Thanks for posting. Been looking for the 2nd part for a while.
Ever find part 2?
I’m going back into my room for the day now but I’ll probably go home tomorrow
The wings still won the president’s trophy that year lol
Been wanting to watch this again for a long time. Many thanks to the poster.
I've been looking for this since.. well since they first played it on tv 8 years ago. Every torrent I found didn't work or had 0 seeders so when I say that I appreciate this a lot, I mean it. Cheers man.
best vid ever, love the avs. This team should have won the cup on 04. GO AVS GO
Starting with Metallica is never a bad thing :D No matter what team :D
Such a STACKED roster!
RIP Svatos.
xXw0lfsn1perXx I cry every time I watch that smile after that OT winner...
xXw0lfsn1perXx I met him 11 years ago as a youth club member
Selanne and Kariya were my heroes growing up. The day Selanne went to the Sharks was crushing. But this team coming together was really cool.
Forsberg "This season is all about winning, there's nothing else"
next scene "It's all about commitment"
It was tough to see Patrick Roy retire. But no question one of the best teams in franchise team history. Just to many injuries and bad coaching.
As a half swiss guy, I m proud to see Aebischer with these guys, he made a great job. The best swiss goalie after Martin Gerber with Carolina Hurricanes 2006 and Jonas Hiller with Anaheim Ducks
42:00 Can't believe that. Kariya brought them to the Stanley Cup final just few months before, was the hero of game 6 and this is what he deserves?
Alex D Yeah, so many ducks fans were so quick to turn on him. Now the Ducks are retiring his jersey which I’m glad is happening. Everyone in Anaheim loves him again
Because the way he left . He didn’t want to take a pay cut then bam all of sudden he does
Awesome, thanks!
Imagine if this team got Kipper before Calgary.
omg i absolutely HATED that play by play guy that would scream THANK YOU! THANK YOU! when the avalanche scored
With Roy playing half as good as he used to, the Avalanche would have won the cup. Too bad he retired prior to this season.
David did good tho. It wasn’t his fault at all. Avalanche didn’t score more than two goals during any game vs the Sharks. Unless you wanted David to literally get a shutout every game.
The only reason why I watched the avs that season was because of kariya
Not all teams can pull a 2002 Stanley Cup win. Get all the best players, put them on a team and win the cup.
RIP Pierre Lacroix.
Hard to believe that was 10 years ago.
aebischer walking on the logo.. cmon dude
I knew once Roy retired it was the beginning of the end.. They should of looked for a Goalie rather than sign Kariya and Selanne.. Aebishit should have never been trusted... (Theodore, Giguere, Budaj, Aebisher...) Let's hope Varlamov lives up to the hype. Avs and Habs 4life!
Ahhh I remember ties in the NHL.
March 8th of this year will be 20 years since the Bertuzzi Moore incident. Can’t believe it’s already been that long.
Woody paige says selanne was on the decline. Then the 2005 season was cancelled, selanne went to anaheim and became good again
NextHW5 he tore the whole league apart that’s for sure, that decline line ALWAYS makes me laugh lol
he was, the lockout was the best thing that couldve happend for Teemu
His knee was messed up. Hell, he played much of his career on one leg.
RIP Marek Svatos.
did they make this documentary expecting them to win the Stanley Cup?
R.I.P Pierre Lacroix ☹️
Sakic, Forsberg, Tanguay, Hedujk, Drury, and Hinote Laugh at your old timers.
Why did they trade Chris Drury? They could've been even more stacked
Because they needed help on the back end. Derek Morris in theory provided nice two way presence with offensive upside and was a right shot
But they then sent him to Arizona. :(@@JHockeyFan
And with Blake and Foote on D! It was scary how good they were.
when espn used to be cool
For all the talk then, and even in the comments here now, I think everyone knew this team wasn’t as strong without Roy. Had he come back perhaps they go all the way. Also of note-a rare media appearance from Stan Kroenke. Throw your tomatoes city of St. Louis
The speaker voice...James Hetfield?
YAYah!
OHHHHH YEAAAAAAH
Mathias Heldevik no it’s that guy from Metallica
With this team, having Granato as HC and putting poor Aebischer in net is like driving a Ferrari but filling it up with regular 87 gas.
It looks like Ferris State has a behind the scenes documentary too!
That was the same season the Lakers added Karl Malone and Gary Payton next to Shaq/Kobe to form a big 4. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out too sigh.
If Roy was playing The avs would have took the cup.
This Franchise should of won Back2Back Stanley Cup Championship 1995-1996/1996-1997 and win 4 Back2Back Stanley Cups 1998-1999/1999-2000/2000-2001/2001-2002
David Rosca #fuckthewings
Well the 99-2000 season NJ won the cup and definitely earned it after the way they played towards the end of the regular season and into the playoffs especially after the conference final vs the flyers.
Sorry but 96 shoulda went to the wings.
@@pianotalent6437 I was wrong in my mind Florida Panthers would have won Back2Back Stanley Cup Champion in 1995-1996 1996-1997 and win there third Stanley Cup Champion in 1999-2000
They should've at least won 1999, 2002, and 2004. If they don't lose to Dallas in 7 in 1999, they make short work of Buffalo. In 2002, if Roy doesn't pull a Statue of Liberty, they'd sweep the Canes. So many what-ifs.
Imagine having Sakic , tanguay, forsberg, Blake , foote, selanne, kariya, hejduk, John Michael liles, aebischer and not being able to get past the second round lol
You say that, and it's a legit point, but it took a brilliant performance by Roy to win it in 2001, and the Avs had a pretty stacked team then. If they'd had the sense to go out and get a proper goalie instead of Aebischer then they would have probably won it all.
And at allowing them to use metallicas' music! Good Guy James!
Wow, I totally forgot about Barnaby's cup of coffee as an Av lol
Moments in the history of the club. And very sorry that we will not see more of these persons in the regular NHL games. And to write about who is the best there is no point because it's a great league, which raised a lot of magicians stick and puck.
We should have won the cup that year. One of the greatest hockey teams ever assembled. Thank you Pierre LaCroix. The problem was Tony Granato. And to anyone who disagrees with that please explain why Tony Granato is coaching college hockey
Still sucking in college all these years later too lololol
Agree 100%. He even sounds like a college coach in this. These are grown ass men, half the team is superstar players with a ton of years under them and he's talkibg to them like a high school coach.
They should've just let Tocchet coach the team. He would've been a better leader and more of a calming presence than Granato cursing for no reason and performing for the camera.
I remember being so disappointed with this team
15:27 is that Marc Moser? If it is, I didn't know he covered the Avs that far back.
Paul Karyia will go down as a top-ten player of all time never to hoist the Cup. But he at least won gold medals in Olympic tournaments.
1 gold medal
@@kallebaah0Correction, I meant international tournaments. One Olympic gold and world championship gold. But if I could trade those for a cup... I'll pass on it.
@@broadstreet21 I still remember when he missed that last penalty shot against Tommy Salo in the 94 Olympic finals. I was 10 and went apeshit over Swedens first gold medal.
12:38....Karlis Skrastins (R.I.P.).
23:19 "Peter Forsberg is probably the worst golfer on the plane without question." - Dan Hinote.
Good thing Forsberg is the most talented hockey player ever haha.
AVS fan 4 life.
This team should have ran thru the whole league with little problems. Unfortunately there's only one puck to go around
"Holy shit look at this Czech sandwich!" Hahahaha Barnaby
I didn't know James Hetfield followed hockey that much
Brett Holland he’s a big Sharks fan
that woody paige comment is still hilarious, selanne played another 9 seasons
Who came here after the Seth Jones interview on Chiclets
58:20 Steve Moore here had no idea this was the last game of his career
Bad trades on the deadline and inadequate coaching were the doom of this team.
i could watch this every single sick day for the rest of my life. apart from the 2 cup winning seasons, this is the season they should have made a movie about and have narrarated by james fucking hetfeild. AND THEY DID!! so many storylines, and the bertuzzi/moore incident... let's not get started on that.
Teemu Selanne, Paul Kariya, Konowalchuck, TANGUAY, HEJDUK, HINOTE, SAKIC! FOOTE! LILES! FORSBERG!!!!!!!! What a team!! They really shouldve gone all the way that year.
No mention of Steve Moore’s existence other then March 8, 2004 lol
what was the song in the beginning
+Juno 191 Nothing else matters - Metallica
Forsberg:)
1:21:26 Rob Blake shaved during the playoffs!!!
itgoalie DUMBASS!!!!
Granato- worst speech ever at 1:29:30
forgot about this vid and should have gone all the way with this team. Too bad Paulies wrist and Peters health hurt this team and Granato
I was at that game against the Rangers at the start of November. It was a late birthday present for me, weird that I didn't just go to the one in NJ, but I'm glad I saw the OT comeback instead of a loss.
Oddly forgettable season for one with so much hype and so many possibilities.
Peter Nygaard my first game I went to we lost 7-1 against the flames Sauve in net, Moore’s last game in Denver before that fateful night... that game summed up that season for me, 2005-06 was the season I actually watched and started getting into the NHL big time then! Avs for life
Amazing team ruined by a one of the worst coaches ever. :|
Why would you say that? I’m a curious swede who doesn’t know so much about the coach.
Miro he wasn’t that bad here, look at what happened in 2008-09 that was shit lol
One sports article documenting the Avs season preview said that all Granato has to do is open the gate and let all those hall of famers storm out and take it. Right.
A well-respected coach said instead you cannot win without good players but you can lose with them. This is where coaching makes the difference.
They did lose Paul and Teemu to injuries
I think the avalanche times are changing, theay had a few rough years with early pics and it might not be time this year since theay lost statsny but in the next 3 years theay have a chance to make it far in the playoffs
Our defense sucks bud... As much as I love the avs we don't have the top 4 defensemen we need besides barie and Johnson
your prediction came true just four years too late
This team was an Aebischer away from greatness
You wanted to send a message that this is not hockey? It’s not something that you take lightly? Then why didn’t you suspend Moore for that hit on Naslund? That hit also wasn’t a hockey play. If Moore was properly suspended for that initial hit on Naslund, his career wouldn’t have ended so abruptly and Bertuzzi wouldn’t have a tarnished reputation! NHL, this is your fault!
So did Selanne give Kariya the Porsche?
And the Stars belong to MN....always will.
2021?
Did they think this team would win the Stanley Cup this year?
Is Paul kariya official retired from NHL? I hope he can still play one more season for the Ducks!!
troll
dude hasnt played in 5 years, hes 40.. pick another target
Wow, James Hetfield narrating!!!
W nothing else matters
Kariya with Selanne... along with Sakic Forsberg Hedjuk Tanguay Roy Foote Blake i mean what the fuck?
Committed to Winning. Period.
This story lines sounds like the 2013 Lakers.
Not quite. These Avs actually won a playoff series. Those Lakers didn't even win a playoff GAME
No wonder they lost, blake shaved his beard
NextHW5 no playoff beard... no cup! Themes the rules!
