- Video released by the Russian Ministry of Defense shows a MiG-31 edge of space flight from the cockpit of the jet.
The Mikoyan MiG-31 (Russian: Микоян МиГ-31; NATO reporting name: Foxhound) is a supersonic interceptor aircraft that was developed for use by the Soviet Air Forces. The aircraft was designed by the Mikoyan design bureau as a replacement for the earlier MiG-25 "Foxbat"; the MiG-31 is based on and shares design elements with the MiG-25.
The MiG-31 has the distinction of being among the fastest combat jets in the world.
It continues to be operated by the Russian Air Force and the Kazakhstan Air Force following the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Russian Defence Ministry expects the MiG-31 to remain in service until 2030 or beyond and was confirmed in 2020 when an announcement was made to extend the service lifetime from 2,500 to 3,500 hours on the existing airframes.

As far as I know Mig 31 managed to reach the altitude of 123,520 feet by test pilot Alexander Fedotov. That is 37.65 kilometers. That was impressive no matter what country you are from. By the way it took MiG 31 only 4 minutes to reach 123,000 feet.

@@felipedias4205 Nope. Not even close. I'm not sure what exactly you mean, I assume you mean low Earth orbit, but even then it is not quite true, according to google LEO is at 160km. Or maybe you mean the Karman line, an arbitrary boundary where space begins and which is at 100km. However, Earth's gravity is felt much further. Don't forget the Moon is locked in Earth's orbit by gravity, and the Moon is 374 000 km away.

I love how "assembled" it looks. No smooth curves and seamless bodywork. It's all welded and bolted together yet it looks like it will never fall apart.
Unlike the westerns, Russians prefer the candy, not its wrapper.
The problem with the MiG-31 is the same problem the MiG-25 (31's predecessor) had; It couldn't get to its suggested top speed because the vibrations in the engine would slowly start to shake the plane to pieces. The suggested top speed is Mach 3.2, but the pilots were warned not to fly past Mach 2.8.
Furthermore, because the plane was made of stainless steel and has such small control surfaces, it lacks maneuverability especially at intercept speeds. The MiG-31 essentially becomes a hypersonic lawn dart.
It's a beautiful and fast plane, but its assembly and bodywork are also its flaws. This goes to show that sometimes you need both the candy and the wrapper.
@@bigtime9597 Um... almost nothing you said relates to the mig 31. The mig 25 has engine limits, NOT the mig 31. Also, the plane was not meant to be a dogfighter. Its a pure interceptor, and extremely well designed for the job. Its radar is also extremely well engineered...

Even in the game "ace combat" this plane has the highest altitude capability. I am not sure about other planes, but I think it has 80% speed and altitude, 20% maneuverability. Interceptor in it's own right.
As I remember, the last ace combat on ps2 it was the fastest in the game. Not sure about altitude

This aircraft has been in service for 40 years. The maximum flight altitude is 30,000 meters. What kind of space warrior is this? Space above 100,000 meters begins. An ordinary interceptor of a very respectable age. Contemporary F-15. Russians love to show off their technique. Although what is there to brag about is not very clear.

What's the actual altitude they were flying at ?
According to mig flug which is company that offers this to anyone wanting to do this for small price obviously. They take you up to an altitude of 60,000ft over the course of an hour long flight. Check out their videos here on RUclips. They advertise flying to the edge of space and since they use migs as well id imagine this is about the same altitude. The views are almost identical between their videos and these. See the curvature of the earth

@@infamous387 The plane you're talking about is a MIG-29. It has a flight altitude of 18-20 km. The MIG-31 has a flight altitude of 30 km. Almost in near-space, stratosphere.

It’s curved that much due to the fisheye lens distortion. In reality it won’t get that curved unless 200,000+ feet at the very least

@BORNAGAINBIBLEBELIEVERS I will always think of it as that place where the blue of the sky edges into the deep night of the place the stars live :-) In a day where we actually have Space Force sections of our armies and the Chinese are openly talking Moon bases (meaning everyone else will have to have one) it may be moot but it is still incredibly beautiful. From your handle you understand it is to the glory of the Maker that such achingly beautiful things exist - and to the credit of the person who uploaded this that we can see it and the amazing machines that can take men there...to the edge of Space...(as defined by ...me :-) )

Mig 31 was like Jet-engines with wings. Other aircraft were using jet engine as support to fly the aircraft, while on Mig31, the aircraft are there to support the engines.

Миг-25 по времени СССР, 80 - е годы. Самый быстрый самолёт всех времен и народов. Максимальная скорость его так и неустановили. При скорости за 4 маха, голова пилота весила 200 кг.
