It will always be the biggest secret I was apart of .......then Kuwait happened and our entire squadron deployed with all F 117s and it was no longer a secret. Flew ecerynight and almost everyday = I was insanely lucky to fly with that bird, crazy stories too
Beale got all the good stuff from CIA skunk works . The Q was a nod to the minimum security clearance level required because of its reconnaissance orientated missions SR-71 and later stealth ⬛🌙👍

I was there with the 2nd Marine Division 1st Battalion/8th Marine regiment. 81mm mortar platoon and had this tape in my Walkman as we went through the minefields, tank battles, oilwells on fire and artillery hitting around us which sitting on 1 ton of 81MM mortar rounds (300 of them) stuffed into an AMTRAC and 23 other Marines. Found an Arab cassette bootleg copy of the AC/DC live album Jailbreak Live outside of a busted up Iraqi tank near Kuwait City. Put it into my Walkman and while the sound qualify wasn't very good. I could still hear Bon Scott wailing out the songs. Ahhh the memories.
The war in question is the Spanish Civil War. But, like many songs about war, it applies universally. For those who don’t know, “For Whom The Bell Tolls” is about the novel by Hemingway, (which is also called “For Whom The Bell Tolls”) - the novel is about about American volunteers fighting in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It’s a badass story in and of itself, and Metallica absolutely did it justice with one of the most iconic metal songs of all time.

Iraqi forces had no night fighting capability, no thermal imaging, no satellite reconnaissance. Many of the Iraqi men forced to fight had nothing issued to them other than a suitcase, an Ak-47, and two spare magazines. Being forced to stand up against the most sophisticated military force ever conceived.
Iraq had the 4th largest military there was a significant amount of the force that had no will to fight, I guess it's easier to act tough on weaker opponents...

I watched the lines of 3/7 Marines marching north (packs so big you couldn't see the men, just bags/ammo/legs) stretching as far as I could see. A black wall of oil fire smoke from sand to sky on the horizon. Only hours later our boys had infiltrated thru the first obstacle and were clearing Iraqis from bunkers on the far side....all while we listened to the BBC on the radio talking about a last minute peace deal. We just looked at each other and chuckled.
My squadron's CSM (3-1 Cav at then Ft Benning back in 2007) was a 19k and had fought in Desert Storm. I was just an E1 so obviously I didn't get to talk to him very much but he did mention off hand a few times in Iraq the tank battles that they were involved with against the Iraqis. The Iraqi rounds would literally bounce off the hulls of the Abrams. I've tried to look him up to see if he's retired, which I'm sure he is. CSM Dan Hule

I watched the lines of 3/7 Marines marching north (packs so big you couldn't see the men, just bags/ammo/legs) stretching as far as I could see. A black wall of oil fire smoke from sand to sky on the horizon. Only hours later our boys had infiltrated thru the first obstacle and were clearing Iraqis from bunkers on the far side....all while we listened to the BBC on the radio talking about a last minute peace deal. We just looked at each other and chuckled.

My squadron's CSM (3-1 Cav at then Ft Benning back in 2007) was a 19k and had fought in Desert Storm. I was just an E1 so obviously I didn't get to talk to him very much but he did mention off hand a few times in Iraq the tank battles that they were involved with against the Iraqis. The Iraqi rounds would literally bounce off the hulls of the Abrams. I've tried to look him up to see if he's retired, which I'm sure he is. CSM Dan Hule
