Didn't have time to do a geology post earlier so here it is! Japan was a part of mainland Asia to the northeast of Korea until about 15 million years ago. There's a subduction zone under Japan-a place where an oceanic tectonic plate subducts (moves under) another plate (which can be either continental or oceanic). Subduction zones have the largest earthquakes Earth experiences (M9+) and also explosive volcanoes, both of which are evident in Japan. For complicated reasons that I won't go into, the subduction zone caused Japan to start pulling apart from the rest of Asia, causing the Sea of Japan to form to its west. Because of said subduction zone, Japan has many volcanoes, including famous ones such as Fuji, Unzen and Sakurajima. Unzen was the volcano that caused the deaths of famous French volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft. Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, and it was its own island until an eruption in iirc 1912 created a lava flow that connected it to the mainland. Sakurajima also sits on the edge of a major caldera called Aira. There's a bunch of other cool geology stuff about Japan but I'm tired and can't be bothered going into it right now. If you have any geology questions (particularly on volcanoes or earthquakes) feel free to ask me :)
I'm gonna sound like a scripted comment but Imma be honest: wasn't really sold on another Japan playthrough with Domination until this. Full isolationist tall Japan seems like it'd be really fun. Great video
I love that they moved dev cost to lv4 isolationism. I no longer need to keep a cheat sheet to know which options to click and can just spam isolationist options.
I still think I like Oda's ideas better. At the end of the day, I'm a conquering boi and Oda's military ideas are just too juicy. God like generals leading space marine troops. Not getting -10% dev cost does hurt when Japan has missions that want you to dev up a lot but we can stack those modifiers elsewhere. Tokugawa's ideas are still a step below I think, especially with them having several that are underwhelming, like the spy construction bonus one.
The fact you cannot complete old daimyo/Japanese missions now is completely broken and a clear oversight by PDX. Something as simple as removing the requirement to Japan from the missions would already allow such.
Really liked the video. I think Japan benefits a lot from getting plenty of idea sets to choose between depending on your playstyle (I'm an Oda fan). Also, nice model! It has a great vibe for PDX games.
Man I still have a lot to learn to get better at this game. I started a Japan run today, I was able to unite Japan in roughly the same amount of time as you but I had to WRECK my country to do it. By the time I hit the unite button I had 120% OE, negative stability, maxed out loans, and like 25 corruption from debasing currency. I had 0 manpower and my army was depleted, I had rebels popping up everywhere, I was making negative money (due to having to have mercenaries). The peasant's war became a foregone conclusion, it was going to happen no matter what I did and I was way behind on admin tech and a tech behind on mil tech. I did manage to pull out of the death spiral and my Japan is on it's way to recovering My army is replenished and manpower is starting to stockpile, I have no unrest for the moment, I'm making positive ducats and have gotten rid of all my loans. My stab is positive again and the peasant's war is over. But I still have 1000+ ADM worth of coring to do and then I have to catch up on my admin tech. It's probably going to be 1500 or even later before I'm truly on solid footing again.
