      I found feldspar very very early. By means of investigating the duplicate scout signal from the seed on timber hearth. Only much later (after forgetting about the anglerfish findings I gained elsewhere) did I have to deal with them, it required a lot of backtracking to re-learn the critical info on handling them.

    I'm a scientist, and this game captured so much so well about the scientific process: the thrill of discovery, the commitment to existing evidence, the importance of failure in advancing... Having a form of media celebrate this in such a way that people can experience a taste of those things themselves in a hands-on way is truly amazing. It's been a thrill watching you experience it!

    • @pirat87pl
      @pirat87pl 2 года назад +21

      I really like how it blends science with game mechanics. The gravity works almost like in reality. The black hole has amazing lensing - probably the best I have seen in any game or movie. There's a lot of small details that are scientifically accurate.
      It bends certain things one way or the other to tell a better story and cheats a little here and there to make the game work better but overall it's surprisingly accurate.
      I really like how momentum works in space. If you know how orbital mechanics work and how to navigate in zero g, it just feels really good in this game. Better than many other that are more focused on these things.

      I also love the concept of the Nomai dedicating their life's work to a to what seemed to them be a failure, only to have future generations benefit directly from their work. So much of our leading researchers know they'll never experience benefit from their life work, in hopes that future generations will. A truly selfless approach to life.

  • @auroralcrow2083

    Something I absolutely love about the Nomai and specifically Solanum is how you actually read text throughout the world originating from when she was a child and then as she grew up. From her going to the fossil fish cave in the sunless city to going to school in brittle hollow to ruminating on the meaning of the eye’s signal as an adult in brittle hollow. You even see the last step of her journey at the tower of quantum knowledge where the nomai congratulate her on visiting the all quantum towers. Then you meet her on the quantum moon and she’s an absolute gem. The details in this game are absolutely insane, there’s so much love here.

    • @more-reasons6655

      I remember noticing Solanum essentially grow up through text, was great to start noticing the names. Then I was deeply saddened to see that Coleus arrived in the solar system in pod 2, lived through to the creation of the ATP as he works in the mines on TimberHearth, which means the Nomai were only there for one generation before the interloper arrived

Technically video games are already recognized as the 8th art form, it's just that some people prefer to stick with the clichés spread by medias, without even doing a little bit of research on their own. I tend to keep a few names in mind to prove these people they just have to know where to look. Outer Wilds in definitely in the top 3 games I would recommend anyone to play!

    I think my favorite part of the game, is the realization that you can't stop the supernova. In games we're generally led to believe that we're supposed to save things, to fix the problem. But you can't. All you can do is rip off the bandaid, to put the universe out of its misery after having spent some 390 YEARS in a time loop (9.3 million loops * 22 minutes), and to let it all die... holding on only to the hope that there might be something new after.

    • @gabedamien
      @gabedamien 2 года назад +13

      Time travel philosophizing / side point (does not negate your comment's main point): from the universe's perspective it hasn't spent any time at all in a time loop. The universe trundled along until 22 minutes before your sun explodes, at which point a bunch of Nomai technology receives a burst of 390 years' worth of data from millions of potential futures which haven't happened yet, and now never will happen. Is this paradoxical? Yep, it violates causality. But the entire universe isn't being "reset" by the time loop mechanic, rather, effects (receiving time loop data) proceed their causes (the future happening) and in turn cause those futures not to happen. It'll break your brain if you think about it too much. 😅 Separately though, I agree with everything else about your post, and time travel philosophies make little difference when *you* at least (not the universe per se) *are* experiencing the time loop. So you do have to confront this moment of acceptance, that your actions are not going to save this universe, and that you are going to have to let all things end.

    • @isakoqv
      @isakoqv 2 года назад +2

      Wow, I knew the loop had been going on for quite some time but I never calculated what the 9.3 million loops would mean in terms of years. Still learning new stuff about this game after all this time!

    • @sablesoft
      @sablesoft 2 года назад +8

      yeah, i think thats one of this games greatest twists, the music when you enter the sun station to find out that this is the suns natural end, not something you can stop, is suitably dramatic and emotional

    • @dewhi100
      @dewhi100 2 года назад +6

      @@gabedamien It's really kind of a stretch that the mismatch between info sent and info received does not break spacetime, but since the entire idea of the game relies on that mechanic, we give it a pass.

    • @Jigsawn2
      @Jigsawn2 2 года назад +3

      I only realised watching this playthrough, that all the characters in the game have been through those millions of time loops before the game even starts, and the only thing that breaks the cycle is the memory statues activating which allows the protagonist to retain the knowledge to do something about it. Although I guess its a bit confusing because in all the previous loops the statues would have surely activated at some point as well. I suppose that's where the causality/time loop contradictions come into play.

    Since you finish the game this episode ill just say it. You didn't actually go *inside* the lakebed cave. The massive hole around cherts little "island" is where you need to go, the quantum shard you travel on isnt taking you to all the locations because there is another location (the one in the lakebed cave) that is shrouded in light, which stops you from traveling there.
    Just go down the hole on the northpole and make your way through it at the beginning of a loop to get that last log.

    I have been waiting to share my favorite outer wilds quote "How unlucky, to have been born at the end of the universe." the most accurate way to describe this game is it makes you feel an un-explainable feeling. the first end run is full of dread, hope, fear, warmth, pride, loss, and many more feelings, and then when the brick wall of "you are dead" hits it brings all those emotions home in one amazing brush stroke. I honestly think without one true death the game might feel a bit more hollow.

    Wow, those anglerfish really got mad that you managed to navigate Dark Bramble without finding any of them on previous occasions! I think their spawns (except the three that guard the entrance to the nest) are kind of random, albeit their numbers probably aren't, as I've seen some people navigate to the vessel after picking up the warp core without much trouble from any fish other than those three, and then I've seen... this...
    You can actually find the Vessel a bit easier by marking its location on your HUD via the ship's log, saves you from having to go via the Escape Pod every time.

    You still have some minor things left to uncover in the base game, if you're interested, so below are minor hints/spoilers:
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    - Unless I missed it, the Sunless City was not thoroughly explored. In particular, there might be some text left to read in the living quarters section of the city that has some background about a certain character.
    - the lakebed cave is accessed by literally following the directions in the shiplog (must be done very early in the loop). You visited this area just as it became inaccessible in a previous episode. There is nothing crucial here, just an undiscovered cave and some text. (you may also need to simply scan the quantum rock with the signalscope to complete this rumour).
    - In addition to the "You are dead" ending after disabling the ATP, there are a few variations of "bad" endings. The most amusing one is probably achieved by trying to force the universe to accept two of the same thing (and failing at it).

    Hey Mapo! So happy you got to experience this game and loved it as much as you did - you were a spectacular player to watch, and I can't wait to see you discover and puzzle out the dlc.
    As a warning, it's truly an experience made to rival this game, but it explores a very different vibe and theme to the basegame.
    Take it at your own pace - it's basically the closest thing to a sequel this game will ever have, and boy does it deliver on that front.
    Now! I wanted to share a few non-spoiler lore tidbits from the basegame to deepen your appreciation for this story and game that I think are really cool. I've also added some ingame easter eggs at the end you can try to do for fun!
    It's all very lengthy, so read this when you have some time!
    -
    At the Probe Tracking module, the computer drops the staggering reveal of how many loops it took to find the Eye. However, in an adjacent computer, it also tells you the total number of loops accrued - a number that is only slightly higher than the loop that found the Eye.
    Deducting these two numbers tells you how many loops you have been through since the start of the game, which is pretty cool!
    But - the other implication of this is that prior to the loop the game actually starts you (the player) on, the one where the probe finally finds the Eye and triggers the statues to activate and 'start the loop' - just like the oblivious npcs that say the same things to you in the game every loop, your player character has actually already spent 9 million loops unaware that they were looping, walking past that statue uneventfully, blasting off into space like they'd dreamed of, only to be cooked by the supernova 22 minutes later... and repeating with no memory.
    It is only once their memories are synced with the statue and the project sending it back to them, that they finally remember dying the previous loop, and thus gain awareness that they and the universe are trapped in an endless timeloop.
    -
    Secondly!! This is a *very* subtle lore fact that only Riebeck will hint at if you share your findings about the Interloper with them;
    But we know that proto-Hearthians had come into being by the time of the ghost matter extinction event that killed all local Nomai but Solanum(more on her later!).. so how did the Hearthians survive that??
    Ghost matter is a seriously insidious and cruel thing. Exploring the planets you will see it infiltrates the deepest caves in Ember Twin, and even somehow inside enclosed buildings. It seems capable of penetrating any wall, and the Nomai truly stood no chance of survival or escape against it, because
    1) they were too focused on the Eye to simultaneously pursue the possibility of atleast communicating with the other Nomai clans where they were, much less build a new Vessel to escape the system when they had the chance to
    and
    2) the one weakness of ghost matter is something they literally were not adapted to be capable of taking advantage of, nor could they likely have discovered it.
    On Giant's Deep, on both Gabbro's island and the bramble island, you are able to find patches of ghost matter. When the islands are plunged back into the ocean after being flung by tornadoes, for a brief second you may be able to experiment by moving into these patches to learn that ghost matter is neutralized temporarily by water.
    The Nomai are specified in the Hearthian museum to have been adapted exclusively to live on land as a physiological distinction from the Hearthians to disprove their own suspicions of being descendants of the Nomai - while the proto-Hearthians (though shown to be amphibious and capable of going on land) mainly resided in the underground, underwater cave pools and tunnels of Timber Hearth.. And enough of the matter had evaporated by the time that they evolved further that Timber Hearth was safe by then.
    This is supported again by talking to Riebeck, who is shaken and notes how lucky it is Hearthians hadn't evolved to become land-faring creatures yet at the time.
    As an aside, it is a popular fan theory that ghost matter is in effect, radiation in the Outer Wilds universe, as it checks quite a lot of boxes in a comparison of its traits:
    - Burns on contact, rendered less potent/inert by water, invisible, but shows up on/affects photography, and evaporating over a long timeline.
    -
    It's later now! You can probably guess on some level that Solanum is basically Schrödinger's cat - she is both alive and dead until observed. But why doesn't she lock the Quantum Moon to orbit the Eye if she's consciously observing the moon?
    That is moreso some arbitrary rule of quantum stuff in Outer Wilds, but to start, when you cease observing your surroundings and are in contact with a quantum object, you become quantum for that instant until you observe your surroundings again.
    Solanum for whatever reason, stopped observing her surroundings while in this quantum superposition - and died in 5 states of the moon, in range of the instant, solar-system wide explosion of ghost matter...
    ...And survived only in the sixth state of the moon orbiting the Eye, far away enough from the explosion. She ceased to be an observer by the universe's rules, and was seemingly frozen in time near the Eye until you observed her after 200K years.
    And the Eye is confirmed to indeed be so quantum it fucks with time. Upon entering it it seems to fast forward you into the heat death of the universe, visualizing the deaths of all stars and galaxies including your own, before you kickstart the new universe.
    -
    Lastly, basegame easter eggs!!!!
    There are two, three noteworthy alternate/bad endings other than the simple one where you pluck out the Ash Twin Project core and either die, or just.. hightail it outta the system. (Hey, survival is valid)
    I'll try to be coy and hint only as much as necessary, but they'd be fun detours if you want to take a break before the dlc, or afterwards to end off the series as a whole!
    1. One has to do with the experiment at the High Energy Lab, where by superpowering the warp cores with the Sunless City energy you can see that your scout is duplicated for a moment when you fire it in, as it travels out before traveling in. What could you do here to fuck up the law of time travel and introduce a paradox?
    2. Another ending is directly linked to what I just explained about how Solanum ended up as a 'quantum ghost' on the Sixth Location. Like the ghost matter explosion, the system is now experiencing an extinction event of a limited range again, i.e the supernova - and if you weren't limited by the timeloop dragging you back, you could theoretically.. 'survive' the supernova going off from the Sixth Location, just like Solanum 'survived'.
    3. Lastly. At the end of the loop, if you are inside the ATP you can actually see the advanced warp core activate, opening a black hole for information to be transferred into the past.
    All holes are meant to be jumped into, right?
    *Note: This ending is only achieved at the end of the next loop, so don't be shocked if you close the game and forget about it if you leave it hanging.
    Open your map and try to see what's new after jumping in the hole.

    We tune in to watch you play and experience the game(s) for real. It was a much more gripping emotional experience seeing you fail (and then experience with the fish), than if you just edited it.
    It’s too easy to find streamers doing ‘blind’ playthroughs and acting like they haven’t done it before or got hints for it. Your streams are quality, never end.

    This was such an amazing playthrough from start to finish, and now you too have the curse of never being able to play it again! But at least you still have some more to go through, a whole new great experience with the DLC.
    That final explosion where your screen goes white and your character's helmet cracks as they drift there, accepting the finality of their death and everyone they knew, always gets me choked up. It's such a bittersweet feeling, knowing that everything is ending, but being happy that you got to experience it.
    This game really does go to show what incredibly unique experiences video games can offer, that movies and shows, and even books alone can't fully do. Truly a treasure, and I'm glad that you got to finally experience it!

      What a curse it is, honestly. I've beaten it 3 times now. The first when it released, cried like a baby. The second when Echoes came out before I played it to get back into the game, cried again. The third was after Echoes for a certain event I won't mention, and cried again. Any time I hear that song I tear up and just can't stop

    Someone might have mentioned it in a previous comment, but a fun note: the reason the map is freaking out as you fly away as far as you did at the beginning of the video is likely an issue they mention in the NoClip documentary! Basically, at the start of development, they had the sun set as the origin of the coordinate system in Unity that keeps track of where everything is, which makes sense! It's the fixed point everything moves around. However, because of the distances, the further away from the sun you got, the more things started to glitch out basically because of the size of the numbers causing weird floating-point number errors that mess with the precision of the coordinates. In order to fix this, they made it so the **player** is always the origin of the coordinate system, with everything moving around **them** instead, so anything that might be getting weird is far away from the player at any given time! Of course, this made it so that when you get as far away as you did, the same kinds of errors start to happen, haha.

Good job on solving the teleport to Ash Twin puzzle so quickly, it's probably the hardest/most annoying in the game partly because you have to wait each loop and getting ejected by the sand feels like 'oh, I can't do anything here'. I felt your pain on the final runs as well, I got got by the anglerfish on my final run too! What a masterpiece, it's definitely in my top 5 games of all time. Alright, yup, I subscribed. At first, I admit I thought I'd just watch you play Outer Wilds and move on, but I loved your takes on this game so much, I want to hear your take on others. Also, must be weird to play Outer Wilds, the most player-intelligence-respecting game out there, and God of War Ragnarok, a game that likes to tell the player how to 'fit the round shape into the round hole' in fear that the player would somehow not figure it out - simultaneously. Makes me appreciate what Outer Wilds did. Can't wait for Echoes of The Eye - you're lucky to have come into this as blind as you did - I only got into the game after watching Jacob Geller's (absolutely fantastic but still) video about it, so I knew some of the stuff.
    Echoes of The Eye is so good, it somehow made a perfect game (in my eyes) even better, imo.

      @@darkjanggo I think Rainworld has a bit too much masochism to it though. The game has a very deep story, but the majority of it is locked behind an NPC that you don't meet unless you luckily explore the correct locations (assuming you manage to survive that long). That's considering that you have to bring specific items to this NPC from specific locations. The hoops that a player needs to jump through to even gain snippets of story information is beyond hardcore. Yes he can piece together what happened based on environmental clues, but the meat of the story is told by this NPC.

      @@SadFace201 I played 2-3 hours of Rainworld a few weeks ago. I found it a bit too cryptic and unforgiving, but it did have some interesting mechanics - whatever I could uncover in those hours. I got the hang of some of the movement and so far only know about the hibernation mechanic and how the spots are indicated. It gave me very strong "survival game" vibes, and I found myself anticipating predators and trying to avoid them, than pay attention to specific environmental details. I haven't given up on it though, but I'm trying to resist really hard from biting and looking up some help. It's also the reason I put Antichamber on halt.

    • @SadFace201
      @SadFace201 Год назад

      @@rohitchaoji Funnily enough you being so focused on surviving and not focusing on anything else around you is part of the core theme of the game. It's just a shame that so many good parts of the game are locked from you until you can get better at just surviving. Honestly the only reason I know so much of the Rainworld story is because I had to look it up.
      The devs did add in difficulty levels in the form of the Monk and Hunter, but the game is just really unforgiving. Don't get me wrong, I like games where devs don't compromise on their vision---but it's definitely a different target audience to Outerwilds which puts an accessible storyline on its forefront.
