Or they fail to properly warm up the car. Engine Oil temp should be about 80c min before driving it hard. Takes a lot longer than people think, oil temp takes longer to warm up then the coolant temp on cold start.

For sure it is easier dropping the engine from underneath, just look at how the factory does it and you’ll find the most efficient way of doing stuff! BTW, I’m thinking about making a table with wheels for dropping the engine on it, with various bolting places for posts that can adopt to engine mounts and hold it properly. Really glad to see your shop working. Good luck with it!
The metal in the cylinders comes from pusation / backflow in the exhaust. A friend of mine had a problem with a broken catalytic converter on his mercedes and he has dents on every piston Top and sometimes a light rattling noise. Pita to find this Problem.

This engine is one of the most reliable engine Mercedes has ever built, this is tragic and i blame it 100% on user error or some shade tree mechanic messing it up.
Hey so ya know, the better way to pull the front assembly is to leave the lower suspension hooked up, disconnect the upper ball joint and the strut and drop it down so you don't have to align it when done. I've not seen anyone pull an assembly dropped out the way you did it.
But how could changing the tensioner make it bend a valve? Did he turn the engine without tensioner? Just taking out and putting back in shouldn’t hurt anything? Or what I am missing here?
When you loosen the tensioner with load on the valves from the cam, the chain becomes loose and skips a few teeth and the whole thing is out of sync. Then on the very first crank and first round of the engine turning valves hit the piston and either break right off or bend and break off later, which is what happend here. The owner should have noticed the engine not running on all cylinders, but probably didn't and kept on driving.
