Forgot to mention that the Y62 Nissan patrol Ti costs the same as the VX Prado and comes with a 5.6 V8 and 298kw of power with slightly higher fuel economy and similar features...
Herein Sri Lanka, Prado's price ranges from USD 135000 to 160000. Land cruiser costs about USD 200000 to 250000. But still it is the favorite one among politicians and rich people
As of August 2020 the Prado engine now gets 150kW and 500Nm from the factory, still not class leading but will make a difference and keeps it as a firm favourite for me.
So an already unreliable engine gets stressed further. Guaranteed to end in tears. And yes I’ve owned Toyotas and have generally enjoyed them, but the 2.8 diesel is a documented dog of a motor.
@@Ballantrae The engine itself is not the unreliable component of this 2.8L diesel and 150kw is barely any stress for a 2.8L motor considering other manufacturers produce 2L diesels with similar or more power. One thing that amazes me is how Toyota can keep this and its 200 series brother selling for over a decade and people still buys them. I also bought one last year.
@@commonsense-grs It's not sold in Europe but since I don't care about equipment, I would love to get a 2.7 2TR engine. It's faster, lower maintenance and half the price. Of course it's only 2000 kg, that's why it's faster.
In my country Peru the Prado base model starts at 52K USD wich is about 73K AUD, that is the 4 doors and no crawl control just 4H and 4L. Here we only have the 4L gasoline, there are no diesel versions here.
One of the reasons I sold my boat is because the prado door would only open 1/2 way before hitting the trailer. Hard to believe even with relocating the spare it has the same issue!
Grass is greener. I am currently in Aussie and was in the process of buying the land-cruiser Prado kakadu. We were planning to buy this car and ship it to srilanka. However due to our insane 350% taxes we had to stop half way. The vehicle would cost 12 million rupees (97,000 aud) but the duty we would have to pay in srilanka is 30 million rupees (226333 aud) on top. In total we would have spent 42 million (316,000aud) . At that price a Prado kakadu is not worth as that is reaching landcruiser v8 sahara teritory (used of course as brand new cost 60 mill +)
Could be the worst car in the world I’d still want it. If you buy a Land Rover or an Audi and drive it for 5 years, it will be almost worthless. People are still buying 05 parados with 250+ thousand km for close to 20k. That’s all that has to be said. Toyota’s hold value
They do in private sale, not at trade-in. Problem is, Toyota’s are like an anus, everyone has one and doesn’t need another. Every used car lot doesn’t want them, because they already have enough of them.
The Lexus GX is the equivalent vehicle of the Prado here in the states, and it comes with a 4.6 Liter V8(only option). It produces about 301 HP, and 329 FT LB of torque.
One big problem with the Prado Kakadu - no properly designed bull bar. If you put the original Toyota bar you lose radar cruise control. ARB one - the off road camera gets mostly blocked. The navigation screen is placed in the dashboard at a bad angle - the sun shining from the left will make the screen invisible, which is especially annoying when you reverse. It is a great capable car, handles the off road very well. It would benefit from some attention to detail though.
If the 3.5 v6 twin turbo petrol out of the LC500 is coming to the 300 series, it will end up in the prado also. 310kw 600nm is it's current form in the LC500, I'm sure toyota would tune it for the 300 series to make 700nm+ though a detuned version for the prado around 270kw 550nm would be fantastic in the prado.
Love a good ol Prado. Always understated due to its bigger brother. A suggestion only: maybe review the Hilux SR, and see if theres any difference with its higher spec brothers
Forgot to mention the power upgrade coming to the 2.8L Diesel. But, I am guessing the extra power and 50nm won't make it a Traffic Light Grand Prix contender.
I had a earlier model Prado and loved that car. But when i decided to get a big camper trailer, it was bloody hopeless and dangerous. So it's laughable that Toyota can charge you $100,000 for this underpowered 4WD. Except for the shitty engine the car is fantastic and as the tester said, if only it had a V6 diesel say with the power of the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Amarok V6 diesels, it would the perfect 4WD, but people will still buy it.
Everything about this is awesome except for the engine. They should've stuck a larger diesel in it. Maybe 3L with circa 250-300hp. That would've been plenty.
Or wait for the 2021 model which has a modest power and torque update to 500nm over 450nm thanks to a new cylinder block and turbo. Hopefully it will have more modern tech too. As always, great review.
All who commented and tried to compare prado with patrol, Amarok and other jeep stuff, let’s be realistic look at the sales and around you…. Every second suv is Prado. That good resale value is mitigated by 6 month servicing and being over priced vs the competition. For 100k you could get a much nicer and beefier V8 patrol.... And if you could afford 100k why are you concerned about reliability. It's not like your gonna keep it for 20 years. Most people that can afford 100k change before the warranty ends anyway. Also some of the appointments such as plugs, air vents, usb points ect are aesthetically low low grade, I've seen nicer in a camper van. Even the seats look cheap... The top spec prado is not smart buying in 2020, if it ever was.

@caradvice Hydraulic steering is in place for a reason. Heaps better off-road than Electronic steering! Way better steering feel when you're offroad with hydraulic steering. Besides, the Prado still has "Lane Departure Alert" that warns you to put yourself back in the lane.
Not a great review, assume this kakudo model is far from top seller, was clear you were going to be negative before you started. 2021 coming will be decent upgrade. Maybe jump on the Prado and Everest fb pages. Prado much more reliable. I for one hated when the wild track pulled me back into the lane and controlled my drive. The fords also have soooo many quality issues
I would seriously look at the new Patrol, know its thirsty but more power is always a plus. I cant see the value on this top spec model tbh, rather get entry level Prado and upgrade as fit.
Henk Stols cheers but Too big. No interest in parking a patrol of 200 series. Keen on gxl and do a few things to it only. I do hwy miles always, a bit of camping and tow a small boat = perfect with new output increase. Not sure why anyone would buy a 90k Kakadu
I wish this had 6 MT. Because manual gearbox is much faster than this. I think fortuner 6MT 4X4 sort out all our needs. Touch screen reminds me my old nokia phone's screen.
To old for you but it’s good for other people , if that’s what you don’t like good for you , always complain about something , as long as it takes you from point A to point B that’s it 🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️👉🏼
Its how much?!?!?! haha Cant believe people pay that much for a Toyota and think they are getting a good deal -0-100kmh in 17 seconds is laughable -So underpowered and thats before you add a trailer -Outdated and missing equipment like all toyota's -6 month service intervals, are they serious? might be capped price but you need to pay it TWICE a year
Dont forget Toyota owners buy their vehicles on resale value only, imagine going into a dealer and buying your new outdated vehicle and live with it for 5 years of 1998 tech before moving on? I cannot understand the logic, here in South Africa the Hilux/Fortuner is a hijacking risk also.
I thought the secret would be that you can use low range on bitumen with the centre diff unlocked for backing campers up hill at snails pace for ease of manoeuvring. 👍
Well engineered unit, great off-road chops, but the the vehicle is showing its age. All that chrome and badging is just a distraction. Shame about the engine. In fact, Toyota should approach Skoda and borrow the 2.0L diesel from the Kodiaq RS.
90K is a bit of a joke for a vehicle that takes 17 sec to get to 100kmph without towing anything or having passengers. I'm not sure how people can justify these if they do not go offroad.
Six month service have you read the owners manual. Not a lot to do on this service. Unless you are using in extreme conditions. I.E high revving in hot and dusty conditions. I.E boiling the oils and blocking filters. And guess what that would be the same with any car. I think TOYOTA put a six monthly service on this car because. That is exactly what this car is made to do. I am looking to buy a used what we call it in the uk Land cruiser 2.8 150 invincible. I have to ask myself what do I want form my car. I tow my boat some times but not all the time so that's ok. I want comfort and if that was all I wanted I would get a range rover. But I want my car available to use and not be in the garage all the time. Some are talking about BMW and Audi do you know you have to take them to a dealer just to change the batterie. They talk about not I PHONE and android what ever. Well I don't give one ????? about it. If your are in my car you going to have to do something that some have forgotten how to do and that is talk. I have a Santa fe just now and I don't even know if I have all that s??t. Not even looked to see.LOL I had to take my Santa fe to the dealer to change the rear brake pads and as it has a high tech hand brake they had to plug in some gismo to wind them off. This cost me £500. I have looked on youtube and found on the land cruiser I can do the same job in one hr at a cost of under £100. You see high tech cars are made high tech to make you have to go to the dealer to get them fixed. Never mind you can sit the your high tech car as its getting fixed and just keep transferring cash to the dealer until your bank account is empty or the cars fixed. Which ever comes first.

I fully concur with you guys that Toyota is letting the Prado down. This SUV needs a V6 diesel engine PLEASE.
It will last you a lifetime. You can pass it down to your kids.
Can't say that about the tech heavy competition.
I wouldn’t pay 90k dollars for this 2.8l 4cylinder, I have a used Nissan Patrol 5.6l 8cylinder that i bought for 25k dollars
it should have a V6 then it will be a beast.
I wish i had one :'( too bad im poor. Haha
@caradvice Hydraulic steering is in place for a reason. Heaps better off-road than Electronic steering! Way better steering feel when you're offroad with hydraulic steering. Besides, the Prado still has "Lane Departure Alert" that warns you to put yourself back in the lane.
prados arent luxury cars though, they are made for off roading!
Needs more herbs.
A better daily proposition than the Ute based rivals.
Peacock Blue is my choice.
GX or VX for me.
The is beautiful but 2.8L Doas not do justice to this car. I just wish they can put v8 in it. And up the Kw to 180kw
guys you are providing incorrect price information. kakadu is 85 grand??? nope!!!! it's 93 grand.. check that again..
Bring back the 4.0 petrol
That’s one long brand name
Haha - imagine if they made it into a badge!
I wish this had 6 MT. Because manual gearbox is much faster than this. I think fortuner 6MT 4X4 sort out all our needs.
Touch screen reminds me my old nokia phone's screen.
To old for you but it’s good for other people , if that’s what you don’t like good for you , always complain about something , as long as it takes you from point A to point B that’s it 🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️👉🏼
Its how much?!?!?! haha Cant believe people pay that much for a Toyota and think they are getting a good deal
-0-100kmh in 17 seconds is laughable
-So underpowered and thats before you add a trailer
-Outdated and missing equipment like all toyota's
-6 month service intervals, are they serious? might be capped price but you need to pay it TWICE a year
Dont forget Toyota owners buy their vehicles on resale value only, imagine going into a dealer and buying your new outdated vehicle and live with it for 5 years of 1998 tech before moving on? I cannot understand the logic, here in South Africa the Hilux/Fortuner is a hijacking risk also.
Affordable: Yeah I don't think so
I thought the secret would be that you can use low range on bitumen with the centre diff unlocked for backing campers up hill at snails pace for ease of manoeuvring. 👍
Easy, Mitsubishi Pajero sport
Edit: with a stage one tune
Who wants Toyota prado at 100000 thousand dollers when you get range rover and BMW AT THIS PRICE
No way anyone seriously contemplating a Prado is cross shopping it with whatever you've listed, no way..those are compared to the Lexus RX..
i love this baby lc
Prado is the best
