Thank you for sharing your family's Christmas traditions! ❤
It brings me back to my Christmas memories in my childhood and young adulthood!
The joke-gift (in 7.16) really lifted my spirits up! 😂❤ That was part of our family's Christmas present traditions, too! Not more than 1 or 2/Christmas, but well planned it gave some laughter and grinning for the whole family! 😁😍🎅✨️

In my family, we usually go to sauna during the mid-day (between 11am to 1pm) so, that everyone can have their relaxation time and we can schedule the preparation of the food. Of course, teens usually just go to shower before the dinner 😂Though, can't blame them. I was like that once

As a Finnish Americans with ancestors that escaped Russia's threats long ago, we do about the same that you do, sledding and skiing. I am a National Ski patrol as well as a volunteer; enjoy the white splendor of winter like a Finn!

I used to have that exact Yamaha keyboard when I was between 8-14 years old. Also, the tradition of going to the cemetery to light candles for your passed loved ones is absolutely beautiful. We should do that here in the US.

      Do you still play?
Petri tried to learn at some point, but doesn’t play now. So all hope is on our son 😆
I like this tradition as well. I think you can totally start doing it and make it your family tradition. 🕯

It gives a truely beautiful start or end for the celebration. We have done it depending on each Christmas either in the morning as a first thing after enjoying the Christmas rice porridge..and excitement, WHO got the almond hidden in the porridge, that brings good luck for the next year!❤🌌

Thank you for sharing, sure brings back so many family memories, sauna, etc. now we just go light candles at mom's and dad's grave sites, only other difference is joulupukki came to our door, I was so scared one year when I was young and I opened the door for jouluupukki, lol and we would go to church and sing Tonttujen jouluyö, and put real candles on our tree! I miss all the traditional Finnish Christmas dishes, since we lost dad in 1998 and mom in 2005 we haven't done the whole dinner but my sister and I make Glögi for the past few years! Kiitos paljon 😊💞

Thank you very much for your comment. My son is still afraid of joulupukki 🤣 so I get what you are saying.
Sorry for your loss. Christmas food does bring memories. But it’s not the most important. As long as you are with loved ones like your sister it’s enough. ♥️
Have a very merry Christmas this year!

Finland is not a paradise. The life is not easy everywhere and the weather is sometimes quite challenging)))
One thing I learnt when I moved here is that you take yourself there and with it all the underlying issues 😂
But after many years in here I learnt to admire this country and appreciate it. Also it took a lot of work on myself.
Finland is definitely very nice, peaceful and beautiful. I feel safe. I can concentrate on other things because I don’t need to worry as much.
So I definitely recommend. May be studying in here could be a good opinion? Finnish education is really good!

Hungarians also go to the graveyard on christmas eve

In Ireland there is no Christmas market's. There is no Christmas calendar's. There is no Advent presents on the four Sundays of Advent. No t.v. channels in Ireland produces any Christmas specials or produces paper advent calendars to go along with the stories. All we get is endless repeats of shows and movies year in year out. There is no kid's show's as such either. All one gets is a stupid message from the president nobody listens to and the Catholic's hog the state t.v. and radio channel's by getting the state broadcaster to show a Catholic Mass, a Papal address and apostolic blessing given by the Pope and a message from the Catholic Primate of Ireland and the Protestant Church of Ireland Primate of Ireland. However one gets an odd Protestant service show on the T.V and sometimes on the radio.
There is no calendar-candle's. There is no Snaps and there is no J-Day. The is no special Christmas breakfast. There is no special family Christmas lunch. The is no special Christmas foods or candies made apart from a brack or a Guinness cake (Both of which are horrible). Nowadays most people have a fake Christmas tree apart from a small section of people who still have real trees. Nobody puts any Irish flags on their Christmas trees and there is no candies or cookies on the tree.
There is no fake candle lights on Christmas trees in Ireland. There is no Saint Lucy's day. Nobody visits family graves or puts lantern's out like in some European countries. There is no mini processions with bands or the fire brigade to put up the Christmas tree in the capital or any of the major cities in Ireland. The Christmas tree is put up by the local county council. So all we get is a tree and a few crappy decorations. No towns or villages puts up any decorations apart from the odd place and the decorations are usually small and crappy. Although some large department store make some sort of an effort. There is no Christmas lunch like in Finland. In some public sector work places and private sector places there is just an normal Christmas lunch break with your work colleagues and most of the time one has to pay for the lunch like any other lunch. And once lunch is over it is back to work.
In many work places employees or a committee will organize a Christmas night out but one has to pay for it themselves. It's not free or put on by an employer
Many people work on Christmas eve and depending on ones place of work one could be working a full day or if if you are lucky one might be able to knock of a bit early. In some public sector places of work and if ones manages is ok, employee's kids can come in and there will be a little party while in other public sector places one could be working as normal.
There is not Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve and there is no presents. In Ireland only Christmas day and St. Stephen's day (known in Northern Ireland as Boxing day) are celebrated. Nobody plays Christmas music. Nobody sings Christmas songs or hymns. Nobody dances around the Christmas tree. All one gets is a Christmas day dinner and on St. Stephen's there is usually a smaller dinner and many people watch the Boxing Day football matches from the U.K. or watch the St. Stephen's Day/Boxing Day horse racing meeting's from Ireland and the U.K.. Many people go for a walk especially if one leaves in a rural areas or if one leaves near a beach. And some people like to go for a swim on St. Stephen's day as well.
While others will head out to get a bargain as many shops and departments stores will slash the price of stuff. Some younger people will head to a Disco in a rural area if one can find one that is open. While slightly older people who live in small towns will go to a bar in a hotel or local pup if it is open. While others will make the journey to visit family and friends, leaving on Christmas Eve and returning on St. Stephen's day or a few day's after. And many local convenience stores and quite a few "Mom & Pop" stores in rural areas are open on St. Stephen's day. And on the 27th nearly everything is back open again. Some people are back to work especially if they own their own business and many shops and store start their sales.
And that it. That is how Christmas is celebrated in Ireland.

    • @gpsfamilyjournal7036
      @gpsfamilyjournal7036  4 года назад +1

Oh no! So sorry to hear it! I didn’t know about. But you know, you can create your own Christmas traditions in your family.
I’m originally from Russia and our Christmas is celebrated on 6th of January. There is no special food for it. No presents. If you are religious you can go to church for Christmas service. And that’s it. In my family parents decided to give us some small gifts and make a nice dinner at home. And I really enjoyed it.
I also feel like nowadays advent time and Christmas itself became very commercial. It’s all about buying gifts. Buying stuff during advent. Spoiling your children with a crazy amount of gifts that they don’t even have time to appreciate.
So in my opinion less is more. More quality time with family. And just trying to remember what really is important in life.
      Merry Christmas!

@@gpsfamilyjournal7036 Good advice. One of my family member's girlfriends is from St. Petersburg in Russia as well. In Ireland we only get 20 days, of course many people in high paying jobs one get more days off as time passes in the job. By most European countries standards holidays are low in Ireland, even the the dept. of tourism and said this. Unfortunately in Ireland it's all about the economy and wealth. People say the U.K. is like America, but it is reality Ireland the is the most like America then any other european country. If the Irish government and IBEC (The employers federation) had there way there would be no holidays in Ireland. You are very lucky you live in Finland.
