How to Create Custom Embroidery Patches with Velcro - Machine Embroidery Tutorial

- Creating custom embroidery patches using our embroidery design files could not be easier! During our Patches Made Easy webinar we had a few attendees ask if they could add hook and loop (commonly referred to by its brand name, velcro) to the back of their patches instead of the traditional laminated backing. In this video, we're going to show you how to create custom embroidery patches with velcro!
Creating a custom hook and loop (velcro) embroidery patches is a little different than creating a regular patch. The special type of backing allows the patch to easily be applied and removed from its placement. Hook and Loop backing is commonly known by the brand names Velcro and DuraGrip. There are two different sides, one with tiny hooks and the other has small loops that attach to each other. Creating custom velcro patches is a great way to make your machine embroidered patch more versatile, allowing you to add them to hats, backpacks & so sew much more!
With our DIY simulated Merrow Border Machine Embroidery Patches, the process is incredibly simple to apply either side directly onto the patch. As John shows in the video while setting up your logo and lettering for the patch all you need to do is duplicate the “tack-down” stitch and put it in sequence right before it finishes the patch with the simulated Merrow Border.
Follow along with this video learn how to easily edit the design file in the software to create custom embroidered velcro patches. This is a genius way to create a temporary and reusable bond, that won't cause damage to either side of the fabric.

i love it! How can I make the simulated merrow borders? Do you have any video tutorial about it? Thank you :)
Thanks so much for sharing different ways of embroidery patches ♥️
Which stich are you using the green outline last?
Were to find the supplies to include the hook & loop?
Thank you John, that helps soo much !
Your most welcome :)
Thanks for great explanation I've learnt from this
How do you digitize the simulated merrow?
Think that’s proprietary confidential info. Info about machine that stitches merrow
What fabric are you using?
How do you digitize that simulated merrow border? I have Hatch Digitizer. Is that feature in another version?
how do you attach the loop part to the hat
It’s really amazing work!
How would u cut the other piece of Valero thou? That attaches to the other side of that part you stitched to the back?
Love it. How cool! 😊
Great video!
Those black-handled scissors are Kai scissors! They are totally awesome.
What stitch is the outside of the patch, i think it is very nice.
As the hook and loop fabric is stable I would cut it to size before taping to the back of the hoop. If possible using a soldering iron to seal the edge of the hook and loop fabric. Hook and loop tape is tough on scissors, so you could easily dull the blades of your embroidery scissors if you made a few of these patches.
I did try precutting with limited success of lining up perfectly. I definitely don’t use my good Gingher scissors, I use my “second tier” scissors for jobs like this :)

@@EmbroideryLegacyI made a circle shape 4x4 in my Cricut machine and set it to cut my Velcro.. perfect circle
Great video! Thanks for the idea on the velcro
Hi, what was the stitch type you used to close off the patch, was it satin?
That's what I was looking for!!.
Thanks!!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
A true master...!
super clean work 🤩 very nice💥
Love you !!! Thank you !!
Could you do a video on what extra step you have to do in the software for this to work?
Very good video , thank you 👍🏽
I didn't check but are you selling the hook and eye tape? If not where did you find it?
Hello, this is so great! what is the name of the plastic backing you are using?

Ha ha! I'd go out of business if I made patches like this. I guess this must be meant for home hobbyists.

Hello! What machine is this on? Any machine recommendations for beginners?
I'm guessing this wouldn't work so well with the pre-made patches that already have the merrow border. I'll have to think about a possible work around. Thanks for the tutorial!
Yes ,can work but you need to be very good to match a circle line in the interior side of the Murrow border. Can be done just need lots of practice and I would use the sticky/self glue backing .
what is the name of the base layer material?
Does anyone know what the name of the plastic is that he uses? I’m hoping to buy some to use, but haven’t been able to find anything like it! Thanks in advance.
Is there directions to actually be able to do this on embrilliance?
Hi John,
What material do you use for the patch to be embroidered onto please. How do you do multiple patches in order to save time .
Thanks Anj
I’m just getting back into embroidering after 20 years. I’ve had to get new software so everything is a trial. I’m wanting to try to do the Velcro patches but I don’t know where to get the supplies I need. I live 8n Kentucky. Any help you all could give me would be greatly appreciated. Also, I’m trying to learn the Data stitch software if that makes a difference with the patches. Thank you in advance. Donna
@@donnahays5524 Hey, how is it going?
Hey John, thanks for this video! Where can I purchase the Velcro/hook & loop that you are using?
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video! I purchased it on Amazon based off of other customers reviews. :)
I'm very surprised that the bottom thread did not snag with the velcro hook...nice

what type of machines are you using for this ?
We used one of our Brother 10 Needle machines for this video, any embroidery machine will have the same results.
Thank you John for some great tips on that.I have the Bernina Designer Plus v8.2.It looks similar to Hatch. Does it do the same method as you do it.
I met you at Gary's from Echidna in Australia quite a few years ago.I enjoyed it allot and learnt allot from you.(Thank you)
The Bernina software is developed by Wilcom and is very similar. Hope our paths cross again, Australia is one of my favorite places to visit :)
Just looking into this how much is the machine with software in total?
Great video. Where I can find people who make custom patches with custom designs?

Do you offer services, that I can mail in my patch and have Velcro added?
Sorry, it is not a custom service we offer.
@@EmbroideryLegacy hi John. Im about to purchase the patch bundle, but on the web page it says that they are not editable. Does that mean I can't edit them to add mylar or the velcro backing? I use the DST machine file. Thanks
We did not need to edit the files to apply Velcro, we suggest not resizing or editing the designs as the motifs will not resize as objects.
what machine do you suggest for making embroidered patches in small quantity ??
hey you can simply order custom patches from www.masterscustompatches.com
Love your videos but what kind of embroidery machine do you use and is it easy to learn for someone who has never embroidered before

Hello, I recently bought a Brother 10 needle embroidery machine and my main focus will be patches. Am thinking about purchasing the Hatch digitizing software for creating my custom-made patches. Love to create the simulated merrow stitch. Can this be done in Hatch, would really like to know before purchasing the software. Thank you
hey for your digitizing needs you may contact us at www.masterscustompatches.com as well as we can make patches for you at direct factory price
Having so much trouble finding the correct fabric to make the patches
🔥🔥🔥
Is there a reason to run the patch artwork separately? Or is it possible to just add the velcro step to the end of the patch-making process? I would prefer to cut my twill with my scan-n-cut.
Nice
Excelente !
Nice music 😁
Thank you :^)
Will this work using a single needle machine? Do you recommend hook side or loop side on back of patch? Just wondering how it would interact with machine arm and bobbin.
I only tested this technique with a Brother 10 needle machine, I’m not sure how it would interact without testing.
I wish I had a sowing machine
You could put some glue instead of putting your fingers at risk..
Every good embroiderer has had a needle go through a finger once... I’ve done it twice... guess that make me an expert :) Joking aside... you are correct, better to be careful.
Doing this business for 10 years.. I've never done it.. always be careful
The material wastage seems high....
Lmao you must be new to embroidery and the clothing industry in general.
🥲
