  • Both Monday Night Combat and Super Monday Night Combat have given me an unshakable love of color commentators and announcers in gameshow-like games. I thought this was going to be that next taste of sweet ridiculousness. Yet, here we are with the machines once again destroying everything I love. I'm ready to be the next John Connor.

    There's still time left in the beta preview if you want to try The Finals yourself and hear those mediocre AI voices they bury behind background sounds for yourself.

      They play pretty differently despite all being just different size people. I expected more overlap with at least weapons or something, but you have to use each differently. I don't think any one of them really stood out as the 'best option' because of how situational their abilities were. So you might be surprised.

    Gameplay is great, destruction is fun and offers some strategy, classes are fairly well rounded. Despite taking from other games it’s it own thing (it could be a little more unique though) game is fun. Definitely agree that announcers could be better

      That's why I started using the grenade launcher. You don't need to aim when everything explodes.

    i mean its too bad that someone isnt getting a job as the announcers and i do think it sets a bad precedent but the ai voices really arent that bad sounding and you can just disable them if you dont want to hear them. its a bit of a nothingburger for me at least

      It's easy to find excuses for the use of AI voices at the moment, but every time we let one slide, it's another reason for AAA companies and publishers to say "ok here's another line item we can cut." The moment we accept mediocrity and bad practices is the moment they become mainstream. We didn't end up with rampant microtransactions and games broken on launch because we didn't have a choice. It's because we said "oh it's only cosmetics, you can ignore them" and "oh they'll release an update, it'll be fine in a few weeks." Embark Studios has already started backtracking on the bad press that this brought, but I'm sure everyone in the industry has seen the indifference many have shown.

      I dunno. VO is really expensive. Especially for non-english speaking studios because you need to hire a native speaker or you'll have negative reviews just for that. At this point if you don't have money you can just as well go for the whatever option of AI VO. Better than no VO and it lets small studios have a bit higher production quality than previously
      Of course AAA companies will bank on that too but I think they are beyond redemption and its unfair to penalize small companies trying to level the production field set so high by endless money of AAA. AI is the equalizer in that regard and the best part of it is that a lot of it is open sourced. So it won't be used as an advantage to further suppress the small Indies but instead will disrupt the status quo and hopefully will put some pressure on the AAA companies as just pooring more money into production will no longer give them an edge

      @@NightNord not paying for voice actors isnt going to boost the popularity of a small game studio. pouring money into the machine is literally how marketing works. thats why you see coca cola bottles and not home made root beer in ads everywhere. if Coca Cola decides to use AI for ads, the root beer company isnt going to magically disrupt the status quo just because they can too

    • @NightNord
      @NightNord 7 месяцев назад

      @@satsu3098 It's not going to boost popularity - it's going to enable a small game studio have _any_ VO. It's like having engines like Unity or Unreal - it lowers the entry cost and raises the lowest quality bar. It's not going to automatically disrupt the status quo - that requires a game studio make a good game - but it will make it [more] possible.
      A lot of people have high expectations for a game production when it comes to visuals, animations, sound, music, etc - all the things that were propped up so high by AAA studios pooring in tons of money. AI, just as ready-to-use commercial engines, makes smaller games with much smaller budgets to reach that high production quality bar. Which means that the way how games differentiate themselves will become gameplay and overall quality of the game instead of how fancy your graphics or how expensive your actors are.
      Again - it is similar to ready-to-use engines. It has the same downsides: lower entry cost means more junk, less discoverability (which is already a problem), more jobs cuts for big companies. But it also has the same upsides: more smaller studios, more innovations in general as more people with better ideas are capable of reaching a sellable product
      Of course in the case of the Nexon they probably have enough money for real VO - but at the same time they are investing into moving the tech forward. And that tech will leak outside and will be available to everyone
