First part - telling you the lift isn't working and you would have to go round on the road when you return, well that sounded reasonable, and good customer service. After all lifts do break down and do need regular maintenance.
    BUT THEN.
Being told that it has been out if service for a while and won't be fixed for months.
Well that took away the illusion of good customer service, there is no reason for it to take months to fix in general.
At least you were told though before boarding, to make decision to go or not (small mercies and looking for a positive in a negative)
Would like to know why it would take so long?
    Old and needs replacing?
    Vandalism so needs replacing?
Standard lift repair takes a matter of hours, or maybe a day or two.
We have a lift at school, supposedly for selective students with mobility issues, but others students do sneak into lift and abuse, and the longest it has been out of action in the 6 years I have been in the school is 5 days.

The person telling me was very kind and appreciative. The lift should have been working though.
