    EVH, JCM800 and the ENGL were the stand outs for me, they just cut through the mix the best. Those 800s have just stood the test of time. What an amp!

  • @heresjonny666
    @heresjonny666 2 года назад +733

    To me this just reinforces how the majority of the tone of a rig is in the cabinet / speakers. The Dark Terror was the only one that had a particularly different tone to it out of all of them. All of them had their own subtle 'characters' but very much came across as variations on a theme.

    • @Xaion6
      @Xaion6 2 года назад +17

      Couldn't be better said, the man thinks so too. My dream amp was always a JVM until I played a 5150... I'd get the 6l6 tho. Hearing this makes me want a Mesa cab 🤣

    • @maddog7012
      @maddog7012 2 года назад +30

      Ide say the dark terror and the rev had noticable differences, but nothing a pedal couldn't bridge. So yeah, a good sounding cab is WAY more important than a good sounding amp.

    The difference is so subtle between the amps. It’s more the grain of the distortion, maybe a bit of the overall eq, but not worlds apart by any means. At least in YT land.

    • @jensloetzsch
      @jensloetzsch 2 года назад +3

  • @Benethor
    @Benethor 2 года назад +6

    There is so much more to learn from this video, than just how the different amps sound!
    For one, it really shows how important the cabinet is when it comes to overall guitar sound. 10 different cabinets would make 10 far more different sounds, than those ten amps with settings that sound similar through the same cabinet like in the video. Same with the mic positioning.
    Second, it really shows how "shitty" a guitar tone sounds, that works well in the mix when listened to it solo. The first half with the other instruments at every single amp i was like "woah, that awesome", as soon as the drums and synths fade out that changes to an "ugh, that sounds like shit, is this really the same tone?". A guitar that sounds good in mix sounds like shit when listened solo, and the other way around. Basic knowledge, but a very good example here.
    I think Ola teached way more in this video, than he actually intended to.

    Everything sounded great. Shows how similar you can make most amps sounds with some good eq tweaking when they're all using the same cab and mic. My favorites were the Badlander, JCM 800, and Iron Heart, they had a certain bite to them that made them a bit more clear sounding while still being very heavy and distorted that immediately grabbed my attention. The only odd one was the Tiny Terror. Guessing the limited eq control and low headroom kept it from being tweaked to sound like the others.

    Chilling out, dreaming away then the Revv comes on. WTF Love it.
    Also noticed the bass guitar frequency in the mix with that one. The Satan 50 was great too

    All amplifiers sounds preatty good, but hearing this riff like a modern metal riff, with a modern amplifier like the revv sounded almost perfect, the bass of that amp punches perfectly like every good metal chug riff must do. Great work!

    Those v30’s really shape the sound. I think a cab with mixed speakers is the way to go, like how Friedman uses greenbacks and v30s.

    Everything sounds almost the same lol. Goes to show that tone is 95% dependent on the cab and mic placement.

      True and not true at the same time. You can hear huge differences, for example between Laney und Mesa or Engl in this Video. Of course, tone gets close if the same guy dials in the amps to get the best tone for this kind of music / riff. However, Cabinets are important, Mics are important (both if DI Recording is not used) - as is the guitar and the amp itself.
      I reorganised my stack at home switching cabs (Bugera 6262 from Peavey Cab to Harley Benton Cab, Bugera 333XL from HB Cab to Peavey Cab). Boy, was this a tone change for both amps.
      However, both amps sound so differently, you could not mistake them. One more brutal and rough, the other more rock, straight, Metal scooped but somehow "plastic". Not to mention my currently not working Bugera TriRec which somehow destroys even the 6262 in Metal brutality but is not that much hardcore. And if I start my Bugera G5, I am in a total different sound world... And these are all great sounding discount copies of the real deals (Blackstar, Mesa Triple Rectifier, Peavey 6505 and XXX).
      And then it happens, that I dial in the 6262 with my solar AB1.6 to get a sick Metal / Hardcore / Metalcore tone but after switching Guitars, i recognise that there is way too much Bass for my Hagström UltraSwede... So, I could work with compromises or Focus the 6262 on the solar and the 333xl on the Hagström.
      The sound in the end is always a mix of everything. Guitarists (including me) tend to focus too much on the amps, but in the end amps are not interchangable or unimportant. They are as important as the guitar or the Cab.

    Man, was having a rough morning and feeling unmotivated and ola uploads just the video I need. Mesa boogie probably owes 98% of their 4x12 recto cabs sales to this man!

    Randall Satan, Mesa Boogie Badlander, Fortin Sigil, Engl Savage, then EVH 5150 for my top 5, but I don't think I've ever heard you get a bad tone out of any high-gain amplifier, Ola! Nicely done!

    I'm looking at finally upgrading my amp after many delays, still using the crappy Mustang I starter i've had for over a decade. There are so many options, with so many varying opinions out there, that i feel like the search is turning my brain to much 😅
    A video like this helps a lot because it evens the playing field. Same riff w/o bells and whistles or boosts etc to showcase what each amp sounds like
