While it definitely doesn't live up to the hype, for me it's not a bad game either. It's still a decent to good sci-fi survival horror that has "first game syndrome" and needs a lot of fleshing out and refinement. The performance issues on PC are pretty bad though. With the prices of games nowadays, they have to be on point at release and after. Here in Canada with taxes games cost $100. It's hard for me to justify buying games when they are average or less.
I do hope they don’t give up on the concept and can do a sequel because we don’t get a lot of sci fi horror games very much nowadays but yeah so far this seems like a wait for sale but the potential for more is there
I really hate that the gaming industry functions on a "standard price" system, where pretty much every product is set to the same 3-4 arbitrary (and constantly increasing) prices, rather than being priced on the merits of an individual product. If I'm paying 60-120$, I want a game that is worth 60-120$, not a pile of garbage that's priced high by default just because of the tittle/dev/publisher that released it.
I say the main downsides I see to this game vs the old Dead Space games is the lack of puzzles, less enemy variety, and less uniquely functioning weapons. That last part is what really made Dead Space what it was. Each weapon functioned completely different and affected the enemies differently. Moreover different weapons were designed better for different necromorphs. But in this game you more have just pistol, heavy pistol, shotgun, etc while fighting zombie, zombie with a revive, and zombie that can climb walls. Plus from what I've seen of the game, takes far less advantage of unique events like it could being a totally on rails linear game. Dead Space proudly took advantage of this to add jump scares, flashing lights, showing Nicole's face on displays, Nicole coming out of nowhere to stab you in the face, or getting grabbed by a freakishly large tentacle. If you're not going to give it those more unique set pieces then you probably should have pushed for it to be a more openly explorable game.
Imagine wanting puzzles in games. The amount of horror games with puzzles is abundant and unneeded in any horror game. Make a scary game without me having to find a certain item to unlock a part of the game with having to do some kind of puzzle mini game that absolutely removes immersion and isn't scary at all. Go play the other thousands of horror games with puzzles. Not me. PUZZLES SUCK AND THEY'RE A WORTHLESS HOMAGE TO OLD GAMES IN NEW MODERN TITLES THAT DESTROY ANY SORT OF SEMBLANCE OF FUN. Take for example modern Spiderman. You get to move bs switches around and act like you're smart when in actuality you're just forced into playing a lackluster bs part of the game that removes any sort of "cool" factor. LET ME PLAY GDAMN SPIDERMAN WHY AM I MAKING A-B CONNECTIONS WITH CERTAIN BLOCKS. WTF MODERN GAMING. Stop puzzle homages. They're redundant, idiotic, and borderline brain damaging when you're thrust into such a cool world and cool mechanics only to be stopped by a fkn puzzle game.
@@KingInfernagon heres the thing, it doesnt have to be puzzles to break it up:O crazy i know! the amount of games i played where ive loved the horror and atmosphere only to be bogged down by boring puzzles that make no sense in the context of the game really annoys me. yes Callisto Protocol could be fleshed out more and have more things to break up the linear place, but just throwing in puzzles to pad out play time and waste resources is aggravating. horror games are not puzzle simulators. the only one that truly grabbed me and had me hooked was the RE2 remake.
@@josuesosa1157 I had no clue the team wasn’t all there, I thought most of the team was there. This one sure hurts my heart and wallet, my dumbass didn’t get the base copy either 🤦🏻♂️
Although I 100% agree, games like God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, and others have added NG+ post launch. Feels a tad like cherry picking to single out Callisto.
@@cormoran2303 100% you are correct, but the general consensus didn't mind the lack of NG+ on those games as they are for this game. The reviews barely mentioned it if at all. When they add it it will be a much better game.
@@cormoran2303 Doesn’t matter, my point still stands because there was no backlash against GoW or GOT for adding ng+ post launch, and neither of those games were rushed
From the looks of it, they needed a tool to stun an enemy long enough to deal with another enemy like a shotgun that tossed enemies back (along with the change of more varied enemy attack patterns).
There is a heavy attack upgrade you can get that does that. Slightly longer wind up but it can hit multiple enemies and knock them back/down. My favorite combo is to use the TK gauntlet to bring them to me, use a heavy, then dash up while they get up and wail on them. Once they get back up, it will be a second or two before they begin to attack you again and some enemies will even back off for a couple more seconds.
The game wants you to do combos and switch your weapons and tools, one problem i see is how different it actually plays in combat from something like dead space, is an unique approach, if you expect a traditional survival horror gameplay it will take you time to adapt, i'm at chapter 3 and i'm liking it a lot but the combat does need an improvement.
I was watching a stream where the entire chat was laughing at the fact even the enemies you could consider minibosses and bosses had the same right punch->left punch attack pattern as all the other enemies in the game. I could not believe what I was seeing, the last phase of the final boss ends up being the only thing with a semblance of a unique move set. How does a horror game that emphasizes melee combat not put much more passion and attention to that aspect?
A strange thing I noticed is a lot of stuff would reset. Bodies and items wouldn't but if I broke a piece of glass or opened a door then left the area when I came back the glass would be there again and the door closed.
Sphere Hunter noticed doors locking behind her as well. She hated it because there were a few times she tried to head back to a store to sell some new loot she found only for a door to block her path even though the store was right on the other side.
@@ryanblanchard2508 No need to be rude just because someone has the audacity to dislike a game. She has an excellent channel that covers lots of survival horror games so I am definitely going to trust her opinion over someone who it isn’t capable of coming up with better insult than calling someone a sheep.
I actually had quite a few times where items did reset. I found that items placed in the level, not normal drops, would completely disappear if I had to restart from a checkpoint. I also had a few cases where the enemy I was fighting just vanished out of thin air. At first I thought it was intentional like a hallucination only for them to respawn if I walked across the trigger area again. I also noticed several times where boxes/doors maybe 20ft away would clearly be unlocked but would turn red if I got too close.
That one made me worried too. When I saw the reviews finally all pouring in with such mixed scores, I knew I was right to be worried. Thankfully, I found out my family had ordered a copy for me for Christmas and we were able to get it canceled before they got charged.
What made Dead Space's combat good is that you can target specific limbs and taking them off would change enemy behaviour and how they attack. In Callisto you just beat enemies down in basic choreographed animations.
It needed some sort of precision requirement and reward system + fatigue/stamina to make combat threating, if it had those things i think it would be not too shabby of a game Maybe next time
@@Spike2276I think what they should’ve done is put weak points on enemies and have the ability to decapitate certain areas around their bodies to hinder their attacks more I think that would’ve put a unique spin on the melee combat
Yeah the main downside for me is that LITERALLY every standard enemy AND all bosses are just dodge, dodge, hit and repeat. It’s kinda repetitive and too easy
I honestly do want this to get a sequel because there are a plethora of really good ideas and mechanics in this game. It’s a shame that it got bogged down by its weaker parts, but I can see them ironing this out into something special. Unfortunately I feel like most games these days never end up getting sequels if they aren’t hits right out the gate.
For sure, it could end up like Titanfall. A first game that might have been a bit bare bones, but really sets up the mechanics and has a solid foundation. Followed by the sequel that takes what the first game did, but fleshes it out into a fully fledged masterpiece
yeah, this is kind of game I hope dev learn from the mistake and make better sequel. We need to remember that although this is from Dead Space dev, this is their new studio first game
This is such a prime example of Graphics meaning absolutely nothing when the Gameplay is this bad. What's the point in a game looking this good when the combat is this frustrating and broken, when the horror isn't scary, when it runs this poorly, when the story is basically non-existent, and the environments are more linear than an early-mid 2000s Lego Game. I'd much rather play Survival-Horror games like Signalis, or Trenches, which look like they’re from the PS2 era but have amazing gameplay. And are actually scary. And actually have a story
Blame the shareholders/Investors. They mostly crunch the devs real hard on things. And we all know how big business corporations are; They don't care about anything other than money.
This is how I feel about most modern games, they prioritize photorealistic visual and cinematic over other aspects that would make overall experience much more engaging and memorable. Graphics is just a shell of shallow experience and holding back creativity unlike some indie titles that emphasize art direction and interesting mechanics which work very well along with narrative aspect.
I dont think that is true for everyone. I find horror games boring so this game was never for me but many people have a good time if the experience is good enough even if they have to tolerate the gameplay. You would much rather have a good time, the market overall begs to differ. Personally I am just thankful that linear games are coming back. I HATE exploration in games and appreciate that there are now a few games for me.
the problem here is there is too much melee combat. dead space had melee combat but it was very limited and only worked for one hit on the necromorphs. the problem with getting up close and personal too much is it takes away from the horror atmosphere and makes the monsters less scary. you compare that to a game like Alien Isolation or the Penumbra games or even Soma and Amnesia. you have to hide from the monsters to survive and you see less of the enemy and that in turn makes you more afraid because you know for a fact that if they find you, its game over. its the same reason Resident evil 4 felt different from the games before it. once you could round house the enemy you no longer had to be afraid of them getting too close. that is why the callisto Protocol feels more like a action game than a horror game.
I guess it's just the arcade'y feel of the combat, and a giant amount of it, that makes it feel like it. Getting up close and personal can definitely work, just look at Fatal Frame where the closer to enemies you get, the more damage you do. I think there could be a way to make it feel more scary in Callisto Protocol. Maybe make enemies a bit harder to beat, but also provide ways besides combat, to get around them or sth
In horor genre that I prefer is the game that give you ability to strike back but hard to pull up either with melee or arm and adding melee would be great addition. Those game are like Silent Hill, Dead Space 1-2,Resident Evil 2 and RE 7, Evil Within series, days gone, the last of usm So you will feel satisfied when the terror can be taken out with your trick and all the limit you have. Not much fan of outlast series, where you force to do stealth to avoid the enemies like hide and seek for entire of the game.
Exactly. People really need to stop referring to this game as "survival horror". Everyone is calling it survival horror. I don't see much about it that is "survival horror".
@@DeadPixel1105 yea there isn't really any big enemy that would actually make you feel like you're being hunted down. Even the original dead space and the other ones. All had some kind of "Hunter" enemy.
Eh melee combat was honestly pointless in dead space. Game pretty much forced you to rely.on guns which were all broken beyond belief except for the pulse rifle
10???? I beat it yesterday and my save clocked in at just under 7 hours. Got it for Christmas, but I feel guilty that my family spent 90 Canadian dollars on a mediocre and short horror game
My favorite thing about dead space was the saw blade, how you could shoot it or just have an enemy walk into it and cut them in half. One of my favorite weapons ever in a game.
just saw it uses denuvo "anticheat/malware" so i did a 180 and think ill just spend money on a handful of indie titles for the steam deck or something.
Honestly, if you have the money, I say go for it. Too often reviews and naysayers dampen the fun. There will always be things to complain about or want more of even in a "perfect" game, and I think the hype has gotten to people. It's not like there still isn't a fun experience to be had here. If it still interests you i think it will be worth your time
im just happy sony gave me my refund, deadspace remake will definitely not let us down. cant wait to finally enjoy real classic survival horror on next gen
I mean... was dead space every insanely scary? Was RE4 ever that scary? Action horror games are horror only in design they're never actually that scary
@@-Cyuu- nah Dead Space had some moments that definitely get your heart racing The opening of Dead Space at the very least sets up the horror far better than Callisto does
@RPGManoWar Dead Space has some pretty suspenseful moments and some moments where there's a bunch of enemies so you're frantically shooting but it's more loud and dark over being scary I guess? I still love dead space just I never really got that scared
@@-Cyuu- Dead Space was actually scary. RE4, at times, was scary (Regenerators anyone?). And the actual horror from those games actually come from the story and, at times, subtle plot details. (RE4's end credits tell the story of how the villagers got infected by the Plagas). Callisto Protocol lacks a lot of subtlety and tried to be more in your face about the "horror", but in the end is just one huge gore fest. Horror is more than just blood and guts. And I believe DS1 and RE4 pulled them off quite well. Did the horror always land with them? No, but they were a lot scarier than Callisto Protocol.
Yong puts it perfectly - I was same as you initially, but now with a few weapon upgrades and more experience with the combat I'm doing fine. Multiple enemies still suck though, the combat is designed for 1 on 1 encounters only and it really limits the experience.
The combat is fine and not that hard. Clunky maybe if your trying to play it like an action game. Multiple enemies require a different approach positioning and timing become more important.
@@nathanthompson742 It's not fine. Camera is terrible, enemies are bullet/hitsponges, lock on function barely helps and stun/animation locks are annoying. It's not like we can't adapt to a broken system, but that doesn't mean it's not broken. It's not hard in a Dark Souls way, it's hard in a broken way.
Just finished the game myself, I've loved the dead space trilogy, and I actually really enjoyed this game. I felt like the gameplay had a very healthy challenging progression to it where I was dying at the beginning and at the end equally, and the only difference was me learning and getting better. None of the weapons felt oppressive or too strong, and I actually really liked the melee shift. This isn't dead space, it's a spiritual successor so the melee combat was refreshing but definitely had a learning curve. I played on Xbox series X and really had no performance issues. The game did crash twice for me but not sure if it's a game issue or an Xbox issue, neither was much of an issue. Enemy variety was a little slim, but they kept throwing them in different groups which added some interesting encounters and alot of which gave you environments to reward you for using the GRP. I do wish there was something to help with dealing with multiple enemies at once other than throwing one or quickly killing them off and avoid the melee system to not take free hits. Took me about 10 hours to complete, story was really good, I really enjoyed the gameplay, and will play again on the hardest difficulty. Don't agree with the $70 price tag for next gen, would've much preferred $60, and think the game is definitely worth $50 IMO.
Been playing on PC for a couple hours now, and I have to agree with you! It's quite rewarding playing this game by actually going for creative mix-ups between the melee and ranged attacks. Stick with the dodge system as it is... and it's fun as fuck! Truly. Just wish it didn't launch as bad as it did. Good thing the patch already fixed much of the stuttering. Also, it really needed the NEW GAME + mode on launch, as well. Bummer how I feel like it's getting more hate than it deserves. Some reviews make it sound like it's as bad as or even worse than other AAA titles launching in worse conditions with predatory microtransactions. Hoping Striking Distance Studios will update this game with more content that'll help get people to try it. I really highly recommend this game, especially if and when it goes on sale for $50 or less.
The game is fundamentally flawed and very unimaginative; especially when compared to Dead Space. The game is melee focused but has an auto-lock-on on your attack that can’t be swapped or broken from and you don’t have a manual dodge. What happens when a ranged attack is launched? You pray. That is the level of control you have in this game. The depth in the combat is staggeringly shallow, too. You have a heavy and a light attack that can’t be manually aimed and you have no input on the combos your character does. Enemies attack 1-2 times, then you counter; and maybe shoot with your boring straightforward conventional weapons… This game isn’t worth your time.
This game is good bruh, why do y’all listen to lame reviewers for an opinion on a game, they’re just saying the game is lame cause others are saying it 😂😂
@@kevin1seven923 Also, Yong's review was more positive than negative. Pointing out a games flaws does not mean they hate it. The whole point of watching a review is to what somebody thinks ks before deciding if I want to put my time and money into it, which I still do, but I'll do it later at a lower price and patches fo fix the issues.
This past week has been really depressing, First the midnight suns game winds up being a boring, clunky mess with horrible writing. Then calisto protocol winds up being a massive broken let down. Game companies demand we pay 75 dollars + tax for games now yet the quality is f'ing terrible compared to what we got 10 years ago. Feels like 90 percent of games nowadays are either shallow cash grabs, or unfinished buggy letdowns. I dont understand what the hell changed to completely suck out all the heart and soul in the gaming industry.
6:38 I feel you on that one, just enable auto dodge in the options (options > Accessibility > Combat assists). You'll still need to time the dodge but left or right won't matter.
The PC Port being awful is not surprising. The Dead Space PC Ports were all terrible and had to be fixed by the community, I assume it's going to be the same with this game. All that's going to be done is added DLC. Their priorities were Xbox Series and PlayStation 5.
The Dead Space pc ports being bad doesn't really justify. If you are going to release it on pc or a game console, then you had better make sure the game can actually play.
Dead Space was released when consoles were almost the primary focus for AAA games. Now its usually equal footing between console and pc so The Callisto Protocol has no excuse for running this badly.
todays consoles are pc's tho, same damned hardware, their basically laptops without a screen and a custom operating system, the "PC Port" should have very few reasons for having such different performance, maybe its down to that old hated addition Denuvo Anticheat/Malware tanking it all? who knowns, probably unfinished code they rushed for christmas sales and now its biting them in the face, which is funny given how well thats worked for every other disaster game that tried the same thing.
@@disasterincarnate what BS are you on bro??? PC and consols aren’t the fucking same when the issue is the ports have to be made really really good! otherwise it won’t run as good, so were is the PC and consoles are the same?? in what way? the god damn softwere surly doesn’t looks like it and the hardwere is different too!
@Disaster Incarnate not really. While consoles share the hardware the, software etc are very different. Graphic pipelines can be very different and since there is no fragmentation, it is easier to optimize things, make bespoke adjustments. Running games on windows is very very different from running it on, for example, a PS5. Windows also supports a variety if graphic APIs making fragmentation worse? Would you expect a game to perform the sams ok windows and Mac (if the hardware was same like it was a couple of years ago). Most benchmarks would argue it is not. I can whine on but I think you get the idea. PS: denuvo belongs in hell, though I would argue he'll deserves better company than denuvo.
If kojima made this game explaining all the missing features were actually intentional for artistic reasons you'd all cry and jizz then give the game a perfect score.
One thing that really bugged me throughout the game is how many stores are placed directly before large fights but the only checkpoint you'd get was before encountering the store. As Yong mentioned, your probably going to die a few times during the larger fights which means you have to go through the whole process of selling loot, buying upgrades, and going back for things you couldn't carry before every retry. Want to wait until after the fight to go to the store? Your probably out of luck then as many of them become inaccessible once you leave their room.
First game syndrome is hardly an excuse - these are experienced developers, the genre has been done 3 times before in Dead Space 1-3, not to mention the rich library of games that exist to draw combat mechanics from. Its also a fully priced premium game - I really don't understand how new games can miss what I would consider "standard template" mechanics - while I understand wanting to do something new, if its not working it should be left on the draft floor. This game somehow manages to be clunkier than the original Dead Space from over 10 years ago.
It's a different game and it's running on a different engine. You can't really compare this game and dead space in terms of the development, especially when the other game has a much higher budget. Regardless the game probably would have been fine if it had a few more months of playtesting...
Seriously getting really burnt out on these games launching like crap. Something has to happen to make companies release polished games. I love my indie games but sometimes i want to play AAA games but they’ve been launching like crap for years. It’s like they don’t listen to us and still do their routine to make money. It’s very disheartening.
I've noticed a big transition from the very imaginative enemy variety of 2000's horror games and the utter lack in modern horror games. Resident Evil 7 had the same problem with the molded, and while Village does improve a little, you cannot say that RE has regained the heights of memorable enemy types it once had. My theory is that mocap has gained total domination animation-wise, and so all enemies need to fit inside that box.
There's definitely an issue of how it seems most enemies need to be "mocappable", I wish game devs would be more willing to try more unusual designs. DMC5 had a lot of enemy types of all sorts
@@OtepRalloma The problem is that mocapping is cheap and hiring an animator to do what is actually some very hard and relatively expensive work costs money and time. You see a similar thing happen in Western Animation, where instead of very dynamic animation and posing you get the same Family Guy-esque digitally assisted animation almost everywhere in television and streaming. Everything looks flat and lifeless in terms of poses and blocking. Only films have the budget for anything more ambitious. The tools intended to make things faster and cheaper just end up making everything look worse.
I'm interested in the game, added it to my wishlist as soon as I discovered it. However, I NEVER buy a game on launch. I learned that lesson a long time ago, and it has served me well.
Only game I've gotten on launch in last few years has been God of War Ragnarok. Before that the last one was God of War 2018, because Dynasty Warriors 9 was so utterly broken on release that I got a refund and haven't really bought a game brand new on release since then other than God of War
yep smart man, stick to your guns. I do the same and it has saved me from quite a few blunders. Back when cyberpunk 2077 was about to release EVERYBODY who was saying "yeah normally I never pre order, but I trust cdpr to deliver" I was thinking "naahhh I'll wait and see" I've been burned too many times to ever go back to pre ordering/buying before reviews. Sure enough, theres a first time for everything and they wound up fucking up. But I saved my money. I genuinely dont understand why people continue to pre order games in this modern age. Back 10-15 years ago we did so to ensure we'd have a copy of the new game when it dropped, I remember not pre ordering modern warfare 2 and it took like 2 weeks of searching game stores to find a copy. Nowadays You can open up the microsoft store at 3am and decide to buy whatever new game is out if you want, so why not wait for reviews?
That was pretty much my exact fear after viewing the gameplay reveal trailer. Enemy variety/design is SUCH a step down from dead space. The necromorphs were disturbing and unpredictable. They could come from literally anywhere, all the different types required a different strategy to killing them. And the weapon variety had tons of options, that when used correctly would allow you to take on groups of 4-5 necromorphs effectively. Different suit upgrades to save for, a robust upgrade system to encourage exploration. This game just feels like such a step down from that. The main thing I took away from the trailer was "wow thats what the enemies are? Space zombies? Thats not very scary. Its sure gory, but not scary. I really wish they went more of the direction of like infected humanoid enemies that could transform/mutate a la 1982 the thing into all different kinds of horrific monsters. So you never exactly knew just what you were going to face. You could see some humanoid looking enemies then all the sudden a mutated spider faced tentacle monster grabs you from under a table, or where the humanoid enemies could mutate mid combat, so you never knew what exactly you were facing, growing like extra arms with claws or something, or detachable jaw for head swallowing. It seems like the most of that you see in this game is the monsters grow a few 5 inch long tentacles from their belly that do nothing, or grow boils on their skin that gives them extra health... They could have gone crazy with the body horror abomination style monsters, but it seems so bland. Also with such an emphasis on melee combat, it just looks so shallow. You only ever get new melee weapons when the linear path you take through the story allows you to come across one. Even then combat looks largely almost exactly the same. The projectile weapons seem almost useless, have no real "kill spots" on enemies like you had in dead space. It just seems like the developers were so desperate to differentiate this game from dead space that they just ripped elements out, and didnt replace them with anything of equal value. I'll still pick this up, But not until the stuttering is fixed, Thats a complete game ruiner for me. And since I've got a 2070 max q laptop, it would likely be unbearable compared to you guys with freaking 3080ti's n shit.
Worst thing for horror is letting the enemy get to close to you and playing them like fiddle. Most survival horror games are scary because you don't want the thing come near to you and when it rarely does you start to panic. Horror game should never encourage players to get used to be close to the monster.
The vide I get from Callisto is the same I got for Uncharted1, Assassin's Creed 1, Dead Space 1, and Demon Souls; that the sequel will truly be amazing.
@Emmanuelle Rodriguez you’re never really waiting for games though, and playing a game and realizing it has potential instead of dismissing is good for games.
Within the 1st hour, I'm dropping infected 2 at-a-time in a group of 4 in an enclosed space on Normal and the combat's running pretty smooth (PS5, performance, no motion blur). I've seen some reviews say it doesn't matter what direction you hold, either right or left when enemies take a swing at you, but it certainly did for me. I don't anticipate or expect more depth to the fighting for a game like this, however I do think there could be more situational events that can pin you to the ground or hold you in a corner that could be interesting, either with the AI behavior and grappling animations. Controls can get an alternate setting. Graphical bugs and crashes can be patched. It's the way a lot of games are these days. Doesn't make it ok, but it is the norm for quite a few top-tier titles out there. I still think this game has potential to become a cult hit. Helix Station was a good prequel series. I hope the people putting that together will continue-on with that as well. It's not like the horror genre of games hasn't a sizable list of janky-goodness in their success stories. But to shaft the PC and Xbox players like this is unacceptable.
@@draco2xx Nah. It's keeping me immersed and happy on the 5 with a challenging game that has an interesting premise/story and dope graphics/sound design. I'm good :D
I wasn't interested in this game, but I do appreciate what they tried to do here. Yong gave it a pretty fair review which is why I enjoy watching his videos.
That's What I hope happens They take the criticism and stride Make an incredible sequel that everyone will talk about. It's unfortunate this game had to happen the way did
Couple hours in... and there's a lot of creative things you can pull off in this game... heck, even crazy combos by combining the block leg-swipe with the heavy-hitting attacks along with the proper mix-up with the guns and telekinetic pull-push powers. Speaking of using the environment, you can even push enemies or redirect them onto walls for easier takedown kills. About multi-enemy encounters, don't forget that limb shots and using ranged weapons afar or even up close are quite advantageous at keeping enemies from ganking you. Also, there's a crowd-control strategy of using the heavy attack after a light attack to reduce the wind-up frames of the heavy to hit multiple (3 or even 4) enemies at once to push them back. Honestly, I'm loving it! The one thing I do agree with is the fact that this should have launched cleaner (technically speaking) on PC along with having a NEW GAME +, which I believe we shouldn't have to wait for.
Huge Dead Space fan here and a big fan of all horror games This game is definitely worth the buy. Is it the best survival horror game? No. But its definitely good enough for sure and i certainly hope it gets a sequel
I bought it for PC and ended up refunding it due to the terrible stuttering. I do not have a bad rig and I'm not willing to shell out that much money for such poor performance. After it's fixed and on sale I'll pick up. Needless to say I'm pretty disappointed.
I will get it when it goes on sale because it still could have potential and we need Sci fi horror to make a comeback in a way but $60 for a game that doesn’t take long to beat and doesn’t have extra modes, a extremely hard difficulty ( Ik NG+ and a extreme difficulty mode are coming later but my point still stands) and unlockables at launch is extremely underwhelming because RE games were short but they had more things to play and unlock when you play the game again
I was never hyped for this game and one of the biggest reasons why was when I saw this game had a combat type system. That gave me the sense that they werent going for this game will scare you. Once you duke it out like that its impossible to bring about a sense of fear of what coming next, especially when you beat up groups of enemies. Sore gore yes but no sense of danger, but hey its its own thing and thats fine. Hope they fix the performance issues and that it does well.

It’s so interesting to me when people say “..if they could flesh this out in a sequel”. If they wanted a sequel, they should’ve done it right the first time. I’m massively disappointed and expected more. Dead space back in 2008 was in better shape than this
I love the part of the game where the main protagonist said "It's Callisto Protocolin' time," and Callisto Protocol'd all over the monsters. This game is truly one of the games.
I'm not surprised this game came out as "meh". All I ever heard about the game was it was going to be gory and violent. I kept waiting to hear about the story and nada. I figured it was just going to focus on the gore and nothing else so I didn't get excited.
Dead Space also only had shock and gore as their selling point. They even made a videocam comercial for Dead Space 2 with the title "your mother hates Dead Space 2" or something like that and let elderly woman play it to show how brutal and scary it was. Only when you played the game you understood there was a good story. At least for the secomd game. The first one was very basic and the third was ok, but meh non horror gameplay. In the end a horror game just needs to be horror. P.T. is loved by all and is basically a walking simulator with horror elements. Only that the horror is masterfully done!
So far, the reviews seem to agree that the game looks absolutely amazing, but lack of enemy variety and things to break up the pace like puzzles or decent exploration do hurt this game. I do agree that a more melee-focused horror-action game sounds interesting, but the dodging mechanic sounds like a real pain. This looks like the kind of game to wait a year to get it on a nice sale and after a decent amount of patching. I will keep an eye out and hope that they do take the feedback seriously in fixing the game or if they decide to make a sequel like you mentioned.
"first game syndrome" seems to be a great way to describe it. I haven't played it yet, but I still will probably get it once the pc version cleans up. I like the premise and would love to support the new studio so they could hopefully make a better sequel. Lots of incredible franchises had rough first titles
I am overall excited to try it out, but the overhype and marketing seems to have an affect on my current optics. I love the director of the team, he has a real passion for horror and gaming and I will support him and his team for getting this title made even if it has flaws. EA basically killed this team, and the team deserves redemption.
You're right,Yong. It's deinitely a first game thing. I think some people are upset and exaggerating how bad it actually is. I am having a lot of fun with it and enjoying the experience. I am playing it on PC and they have just released a patch which fixes most of the stuttering and gives you an extra 5-10 fps boost too.
I am playing on PS5, and the game for me is smooth. I like it when the radio plays on my controller as it adds another level immersion, not to mention other controller benefits. Most of the comments here are just ick, which does not support the growth of new devs, but not entirely wrong.
It's not our problem that it's a first game. It didn't live up to hype, it's not even a survival-horror. You having fun doesn't mean everyone should have fun. "Most of the stuttering..." Sorry mate, this isn't the product that was advertised and people are done with corporate lies.
@@fortnight5677 what did they advertise that wasn't shown in the actual game? You're just making shit up lol. Just because you overhyped the game and thought it was gonna be a magnum opus doesn't mean it's a bad game.
I'm anxious to expect the same thing that happened to Days Gone and other games happens to Callisto. At launch, Days Gone was hated by most people. Then, when PlayStation announced there will not be a sequel, people got really angry and sad. You people actually made this possible. Hell, even the original Death Space wasn't a blockbuster title at launch as everyone's praising it so much today. When people compare and horror action game to Elden Ring and GoW you know they are talking more about what they've already experienced very recently. It affects their genuine view of things. With some time people will start to appreciate the effort and how good this game actually is. People just forget too easily.
Although I respect their opinion, I don't take reviewers on every word. I listen and form my own choices/opinions. Some people are like "Skillup saids it's bad so I'm not getting it. It's good, I'm definitely getting it." That's fine but I ultimately form my own opinion.
I get why they released it a bit too early...this was praised as the "spiritual successor" to Dead Space...then the Dead Space remake got announced and would release just a little over a month later. Although Callisto Protocol is a bit disappointing in some aspects, it's a damn good foundation. If there is a sequel, I'm very optimistic that it will hit it out of the park
That is certainly... a logic, not really a good one though, if that was their aim. They could've waited it out for several months or so after the Dead Space Remake and would've done fine. This game would've been more refined and plenty of people would still be craving an entirely new Dead Space type of game.
This mindset of "they got a good foundation now" is why companies make games half baked and sell them at full price because people will say "they got a good foundation now" how about instead of just doing the foundation you actually do the whole thing and not cheap out
I do want to try it, but I really don’t think it’s worth the time to play as it is now. I’m really disappointed that it’s not the great spiritual successor we were hoping for. And in the end the only thing that’s new is you can melee enemies more than blasting them to pieces. And if that’s really all there is I might as well just wait for the Dead Space remake. It’s just too similar and while I wouldn’t mind that the story itself doesn’t help hold it up better. So maybe next time around.
I think the studio and Glenn need to take this feedback and just go again. They definitely dropped the ball with this one hard. Studios first game so Im interested to see how they come back from this.
Yea it's a painfully average game but definitely solid foundations. Though after the midway point I was just kinda done. Story was non-existent since that was a main reason for me getting the game. I could see everything happening a mile away. And the gameplay was just so lackluster I didn't see any reason as to why I should continue. Sadly I did refund it but better luck next time
I whole heartedly agree with this, take it as minimal success and learn from it then improve further for a greater success. This game would have given their studio a lot of money to expand upon more tech and hiring of new team members.
As a principle, I will never pay $70 for a game, but I’m definitely picking this up when it dips bellow $60! I’m curious where they’ll take this series.
Where EA simply tossed the baby out with the bathwater, KRAFTON Inc. took it a step farther. They're scrambling to scoop up the dirty water, the dead baby, the turds that baby pooped into the water, and clumsily trying to get it back into the tub before charging us for a wash in it. This is the Dead Space equivalent of Silent Hill: Homecoming; a wimpy shadow of the original, right down to adding a crappy melee/dodge system.
I've given it 8.8 technically. None technical a 9. I'm taking also into account to that I'm treating this as Schofield's 'debut' even though it's his return. Callisto Protocol was a great start to hopefully turn into something more when the dlc story hits and hopefully making it into a multimedia franchise. I'll be doing another playthrough of it. Maximum Difficulty I would rate it a 6. A 7 in few areas.
It is what it is. But I feel that it's WAY overpriced for the product. It is an indie game from a new independent dev studio. It should have been $30-$40 at release. Not full price like a AAA title.
yea it's impossible to navigate around multiple enemies when the dodge mechanic is directly tied to your movement. a dedicated dodge button could help to remedy this to make mob fights far less frustrating. had a great time overall tho
honestly really loving the game so far not having an ng+ or hardcore at launch kind of sucks but it’s literally coming in 2 months as a free update so i can enjoy that then, I find the combat while clunky at times actually really refreshing in a genre thats had basically the same combat feel for like 30 years
Seems to be very mixed....Honestly the bar was set very high because of Dead Space, so having to live up to it would be a very hard thing to do, expectations went through the roof because of it. Not to mention it was released from a AA studio compared to Visceral which was AAA.
It's not a bad game. The problem is that everyone thought it would be a spiritual successor of Dead Space which it absolutely isn't. Dead Space is a masterpiece. Callisto Protocol doesn't even hold a candle to Dead Space tbh. It's not a SciFi Survival Horror game with deep lore, puzzles and cool game mechanics. It's a good looking but also very shallow and shortlived SciFi Action game that doesn't offer much other than running and gunning/meleeing. The melee combat is the most important thing in thos game and yet they failed to implement it correctly. The game isn't hard in a Dark Souls way because of fair but unrelenting combat, it's hard because of lock on and camera issues and animation/stun locks so you can't fight against 2-3enemies at once in a fair way. It's a bummer.
Lead devs: we want to break away from EA so we can realize our creative vision, without the things publishers throw in to ruin games! Also lead devs: _Paywalls content in a single player game behind a season pass while making employees watch footage of real gruesome deaths to better animate the death animations that are being paywalled, all for it to launch unpolished regardless_ Honestly I don't know why I ever bothered being excited for this game.
ah yes. after DS3 the whole studio being disbanded by EA makes them the one ‘breaks’ away from EA. lest not forget it was EA make them implemented paywalled DLC and stores using Real money for additional consumables on DS3 as well. that didn’t sale well enough and lead to them nuking the studio in the first place too.
frankly , seeing they try to make a new story from their experiences was great to see, however the executions and the yielded product we play as game leave a lot to wish for.
@@RPGManoWar yes, not buying it either, but the notions of they managed to derive past experience to make new good horror story, and left a lot to desire for still stands.
That shader compilation stutter is a very common issue with Unreal Engine games. It blows my mind that the issue is so prevalent, even on high-end PCs, yet developers rarely get called out for it. I would rather have full-blown loading screens between areas than constant *perceptible* asset streaming happening in every room. It's supposedly fixed in UE 5.1, but who knows how long that will take to trickle down to new games.
@@dudeimgeorgeGames have been priced the same for the last 20 years, and making them is only getting more expensive, the price hike will happen to all of them eventually.
The entire premise pre release was it’s a spiritual successor to Dead Space. Nothing else was ever talked about. That’s how you know it was going to be trash, nostalgia bait.
This my friends is why you wait for reviews. I'll cop after a deep sale. Not enough content for ME to warrant 70 bucks especially considering all the reported issues
While it definitely doesn't live up to the hype, for me it's not a bad game either. It's still a decent to good sci-fi survival horror that has "first game syndrome" and needs a lot of fleshing out and refinement. The performance issues on PC are pretty bad though.

@@araonthedrake4049 piracy exists 🤣🤣
@@araonthedrake4049 Agreed.
Original deadspace had like 5 types lol
The plot/story telling is lacking as well.

Kind-of like Statis from the Dead space games!
There is a shotgun later in the game when you get to the habitat dome
Probably performance reasons but wasn't optimised with care

I actually had quite a few times where items did reset. I found that items placed in the level, not normal drops, would completely disappear if I had to restart from a checkpoint. I also had a few cases where the enemy I was fighting just vanished out of thin air. At first I thought it was intentional like a hallucination only for them to respawn if I walked across the trigger area again.
I also noticed several times where boxes/doors maybe 20ft away would clearly be unlocked but would turn red if I got too close.
When I saw the review embargo wasn't releasing until the day of release, I knew it was never going to live up to the hype.

What made Dead Space's combat good is that you can target specific limbs and taking them off would change enemy behaviour and how they attack. In Callisto you just beat enemies down in basic choreographed animations.
It needed some sort of precision requirement and reward system + fatigue/stamina to make combat threating, if it had those things i think it would be not too shabby of a game
Maybe next time
@@Spike2276I think what they should’ve done is put weak points on enemies and have the ability to decapitate certain areas around their bodies to hinder their attacks more I think that would’ve put a unique spin on the melee combat
Signalis is awesome! I recommend to everyone with game pass!
Blame the shareholders/Investors.
They mostly crunch the devs real hard on things.
And we all know how big business corporations are;
They don't care about anything other than money.
This has been said a 1000 times. Also good graphics and good gameplay aren't mutually exclusive
The enemies in this game remind me of Grendel from the animated Beowulf movie.
Underrated movie.
A great display of the conceptualization skill, Raphael.
And I just finished rewatching beowulf too, look at all these grendels
That movie was soo good, but yeah your right
They remind me of the movie Hooligans with Elijah Wood
the problem here is there is too much melee combat. dead space had melee combat but it was very limited and only worked for one hit on the necromorphs. the problem with getting up close and personal too much is it takes away from the horror atmosphere and makes the monsters less scary. you compare that to a game like Alien Isolation or the Penumbra games or even Soma and Amnesia. you have to hide from the monsters to survive and you see less of the enemy and that in turn makes you more afraid because you know for a fact that if they find you, its game over. its the same reason Resident evil 4 felt different from the games before it. once you could round house the enemy you no longer had to be afraid of them getting too close. that is why the callisto Protocol feels more like a action game than a horror game.

Get ready for a boss fight.
4 times.
Get it, im having a blast right now.
Enemies attack 1-2 times, then you counter; and maybe shoot with your boring straightforward conventional weapons…
This game isn’t worth your time.
Its like buying a new car that doesn't have brakes, who even tests these games nowadays...
This and Back4Blood are prime examples as too why I refuse year one buys.
Both games you mentioned are best to skip all together not just first year
I bought Back 4 Blood and Biomutant. Definitely regret both purchases.
After trying both... sure, Callisto ain't perfect but it's wayyy better than Back4Blood lol

Just don’t get it. Aside from the visuals, the game is poorly thought out, unimaginative and frustrating.
This game is good bruh, why do y’all listen to lame reviewers for an opinion on a game, they’re just saying the game is lame cause others are saying it 😂😂
@@kevin1seven923 Then what the fuck are you watching it for?
I was all set to buy this game today. But with everything that I’ve seen in the reviews I will definitely wait until this drops to $40-$45.
Wait until you get on torrent , dont waste money on this , 8 hours of game is not WORTHY of 70 dollars
I would wait even further honestly. Just finished the game and its so frustrating
Honestly having already bought it at $70 I wouldn’t buy it for anything more than $15
@@Marcossd2I think the length is fine the issue is no replay ability RE games are short but they have stuff to unlock and modes
This game is worth $30 max, zero replay ability unlike dead space 1 & 2
For $70 it’s definitely a wait for sale
Just completed the game, it ran beautifully on my PS5.
A wise decision, that stuttering is awful, the game needs serious performance improvements.
yep smart man, stick to your guns.
Yea I learned my lesson with this game unfortunately.
You can take devs out of EA but you can never take EA out of the devs. Selling a gamemode that gives the game replayability as DLC is just a d* move.
The prequel podcast was really well done. I highly recommend it. Gonna wait for the game to fix some of its issues over the next year.
This is one of those games where the atmosphere and setting sells me entirely for better or worse
Don't. Ever. Pre-order.
Yet another decent game born in an era where being "decent" isn't good enough anymore.
Between this and spherehunter's review. I'm getting the feeling this is a game I'll be passing on or wait years later when it's on sale for 5 dollars.
Yea I got to the halfway point and already put in a request for a refund. Definitely not worth 70 fucking dollars.
PLAY SIGNALIS! Trust me it’s easily the best survival horror in years
The vide I get from Callisto is the same I got for Uncharted1, Assassin's Creed 1, Dead Space 1, and Demon Souls; that the sequel will truly be amazing.
Assassins creed 1 was pretty good, but other than that I completely agree. Dead space 2 is still on of my all time favorites
@Emmanuelle Rodriguez you’re never really waiting for games though, and playing a game and realizing it has potential instead of dismissing is good for games.
"Not the homerun the IP could be. Yet still a fun game" paraphrased quote from Yong.

Whenever I read the name of the game, my brain goes straight to the calippo ice lollies, and I can't take this game seriously because of it.

What's that? Delivering review copies late or something?
@@archersterling6726 review embargo is when they prevent reviews from being posted to a certain point/date, usually to help preserve their image so people may buy the game on release without being swayed by others opinion

I'm really enjoying the game. I don't see why so many people hate it.
It’s so interesting to me when people say “..if they could flesh this out in a sequel”. If they wanted a sequel, they should’ve done it right the first time. I’m massively disappointed and expected more. Dead space back in 2008 was in better shape than this
If this was the case then alot of beloved franchises wouldn't be around nowadays. Including dead space lol
First time in about two years since I got recommended one of your videos. Weird I totally forgot that you existed on RUclips. Glad to see you again

@@archersterling6726 right. That's the same thing as making your own choice. That's a choice.
This mindset of "they got a good foundation now" is why companies make games half baked and sell them at full price because people will say "they got a good foundation now" how about instead of just doing the foundation you actually do the whole thing and not cheap out
Copium a 70 dollar good foundation is still a terrible buy.
What I get from comments is ppl so used to "zombies" concept nowdays, that it's no longer considered a horror or scary. Amazing.
The dodge mechanic is made for 1v1, but most of the time you're fighting more than 1 enemy. It feels really frustrating.
This.
Honestly, that is not an issue since the enemies seem to wait their turn to attack.
Even on Hardcore, they wait for their turn to attack.
This game basically needed a Demo or a close beta or some shit, take surveys so they could have added mechanics and refine combat.
Just wait for the "Gold Edition" or something for it to be a real complete game
The game made me feel scared, but whenever I had enemies to fight I wasn't scared. I kinda felt like rambo.

A better title would have been “Callisto Protocol - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, & The Inexcusable”
This is the Dead Space equivalent of Silent Hill: Homecoming; a wimpy shadow of the original, right down to adding a crappy melee/dodge system.
and adding denuvo rootkit anticheat/malware for good measure, 1 of several reasons why its probably running like garbage.

It's a bummer.

ah yes. after DS3 the whole studio being disbanded by EA makes them the one ‘breaks’ away from EA. lest not forget it was EA make them implemented paywalled DLC and stores using Real money for additional consumables on DS3 as well. that didn’t sale well enough and lead to them nuking the studio in the first place too.
frankly , seeing they try to make a new story from their experiences was great to see, however the executions and the yielded product we play as game leave a lot to wish for.
@@ArthurSuen91 you realize this game is selling a $30 season pass which includes kill move animations
@@RPGManoWar yes, not buying it either, but the notions of they managed to derive past experience to make new good horror story, and left a lot to desire for still stands.
@@ArthurSuen91 the diet-necromorphs aren't gonna fuck you bro
That shader compilation stutter is a very common issue with Unreal Engine games. It blows my mind that the issue is so prevalent, even on high-end PCs, yet developers rarely get called out for it. I would rather have full-blown loading screens between areas than constant *perceptible* asset streaming happening in every room. It's supposedly fixed in UE 5.1, but who knows how long that will take to trickle down to new games.
Finished the game this morning on my PS5 no stutter issue.I did enjoy it, hoping Striking Distance makes a sequel.Solid 7.5/10
Absolutely not worth the price
@@dudeimgeorgeGames have been priced the same for the last 20 years, and making them is only getting more expensive, the price hike will happen to all of them eventually.
@@dudeimgeorge thats a personal opinion. You're not gonna get a brand new game for $30. Even if its in this type of state.
Thank you. I will wait till the first full rounds of updates
Enjoying it so far, a bit janky. Very glad I had a couple games to trade in for this
The entire premise pre release was it’s a spiritual successor to Dead Space. Nothing else was ever talked about. That’s how you know it was going to be trash, nostalgia bait.
I'm still going to get it to support the devs, I'm hoping that they learn from the feedback and improve on hopefully their next sci-fi horror game
This my friends is why you wait for reviews. I'll cop after a deep sale. Not enough content for ME to warrant 70 bucks especially considering all the reported issues
