I think your initial reaction was about the same as everyones when they first hit the scene. Toxicity was the first song I heard of theirs, my first reaction was holy crap wtf just happened! I wasn't even sure if I liked it at first, but they grew on me very fast. Great band.

Not really one of their better songs IMO, but it was incredible the amount of radio play it got when it came out. Not just because of how it sounds. The lyrics are pretty charged. I don't think a lot of those radio stations realized that, or they thought their audience wouldn't because of the chorus. Makes it sound like a party song. It's specifically about the Iraq war, but also more generally about the "hypnotizing tactics" that the US government uses to make citizens accepting of, or apathetic to their actions and interventions in the world.

VERY first time I heard these guys was live (with Korn, kid rock, Powerman 5000, and Metallica at Kentucky speedway in 2000 or 2001)... I didn't understand many of the lyrics..but I knew they were interesting and talented !

First song I heard was Sugar, it was their radio debut in 98, then spiders. Never bought an album just knew this hits. Lots of promo passed out in OC back then, had a shiny system of a down sticker on my 88 blazer (rip). Flash to the end of 2016 and I find myself in a system of a down tribute band. Then shit hit the fan, lost everything, living in a minivan and this brings up painful memories. I just came because I think the girl is cute

What just happened? A great song from a great band, that's what just happened lol. I'm a total metal head & I had many WTF moments when first hearing these guys tbh. Wasn't even sure if I liked them because they frankly seemed bizarre but they are growers! They're a very quirky band with a quite unique musical approach & they are also very political & use a lot of cryptic obscure historical references in their writing too.

Oh, you poor thing... You can't start SOAD from this song! Try Aerials, or Lonely Day, or Spiders. It's a great band, but they can easily scare away newcomers. Then slowly take something a bit heavier, like Chop Suey and Toxicity, and then a bit heavier, and then a bit more... And then you are a fan and can listen any of their songs.

"BYOB" *does" mean "bring your own beer." But the double entendre is "bring your own bombs." And the entire point of this song is to joke (?) about killing Iraqis in the desert after finding (?) WMD's (?). The point of the video is to make you uncomfortable.
