Carb Tuning - Sizing the Pilot Jet (DR-Z 400SM)

  • Example bike was a 2006 DR-Z 400SM, however the technique applies to nearly all carb bikes. If you are having issues holding the bit in the 1/4 socket then apply a small amount of bearing grease to the inside of the socket and it will hold the bit.
The fuel mixture screw is almost always mounted on the engine side of the carb at the leading edge of the float bowl. It will be sticking down in a post and the screw itself is recessed into the post.

That fuel line is high tech

    Fuel line looks sketchy.

I don't suppose you could do a video with the sound difference while adjusting the fuel screw? Basically, I turned up the idle such that it sounded faster than it should be then I turned in my extended fuel screw. It never got to the point where the engine sounded like it wanted to die (I suspect my 25 pilot jet might be too big and the bike is running rich), but I found that 1 turn out made it sound the most crisp. Does that sound about right?

why a fast idle? my bike naturally idles real slow but it starts easy, runs well at any speed, and goes like hell.. what's the day idle needed for?

great video. I personally hate this bike (mine in peticular) but the info was very helpful

How does it run with just the one turn out. Any hesitation trying to take off? Any idling issues? Also, is it still stalking at stop lights?

I can't remember if you had a full exhaust or just the slip on. Either way you should probably have the 25 pilot installed that came with the jd jet kit. 1 turn out sounds a little lean. I imagine that would pop quite a bit on deceleration, though using the extended mixture screw requires fewer turns than a stock mixture screw.
I tried to record the sound difference this weekend but the only DRZ I have access to is so loud the camera heard the same sounds the whole time.

God this post is old... hope you're still monitoring!
I have an '07 drz400s, with the JD jet kit, blue needle, 3rd clip, etc. 3x3 mod is closer to 4x4 (previous owner modded). 25 pilot, 160 main.
I've got some stalling in 2nd gear at mid rpms, i'm guessing from running rich, and going to try adjusting the needle to the 2nd clip to fix that... but even with the 3x3, aftermarket muffler, cleaned air filter and snorkel removed i can turn my extended fuel screw in all the way and have the bike idle... do I (most likely) really need to drop to a 22.5 idle jet?
It has a bit of a muffled, rich, "off" idle, sounds like an occasional miss or burp...

@@patman189 I know this is a long shot (6years!) but did you ever get your DRZ running right with the 25 pilot? I'm having same issue

@@jeremylewis1300 red needle 3rd clip I think... extended adjustment screw is a must. i want to say at 800-1000ft elevation I was at like 2 1/4 turns out on the screw?
Ended up having a bad bowl gasket, bad needle gasket, and a poor seal on my boot. cleaned up those issues and it ran great.
Sold it about a year ago when kid #3 was born and I knew little kids sports were going to take over my life lol

@@jeremylewis1300 Oh, and if you haven't already, throw a common 6 way screwdriver in the tail bag. mini ratchet with 8mm and 10mm's. Dont use the vacuum-operated petcock, get a manual on/off. Trailtech speedo is AWESOME. Never upgraded my seat... but Heard those are a big deal. Oh, and if you're over 180lbs and/or ride aggressively offroad, get the suspension redone.
OH! finally, get some high end brake pads, drop a gear up front, add 2 in the rear. It's a godawful torque monster in 1st and single track riding gets pretty fun. Tusk HD spring kit (anyone can do it, takes 15-20 minutes) with new plates and it's ready for some nasty stuff

@@patman189 thanks so much for getting back to me! Great info. Sounds like you had a good run with the DRZ. I'm definitely going to take you up on those suggestions. I really appreciate it 🙏
