Thanks for joining us, you've tuned into Arirang's Within the Frame. I'm Han Da-eun in Seoul.
The world is currently facing numerous crises, from ongoing wars and slowing economic growth to the escalating impacts of climate change.
Yet, one critical issue that requires greater attention is the global education crisis.
Across various regions, millions of children are out of school, and without urgent action, an estimated 300 million children could lack basic numeracy and literacy skills, according to multiple analyses.
This could have severe consequences for global security and the economy but humanitarian funding for education in emergencies dropped for the first time in a decade last year.
In today’s episode, we explore the multifaceted challenges of the global education crisis and the pivotal role of UNICEF, alongside its cooperation with South Korea, in addressing related issues.
For that we have the privilege to speak with Dr. Pia Rebello Britto, UNICEF’s new Director of Global Education and Adolescent Development, who is also a globally recognized expert in early childhood development and education.
Q1. Let's start by discussing your visit to Korea. What is the primary purpose of your trip?
Q2. Can you elaborate on the highlights of your visit? Which government bodies and what education stakeholders have you met?
Q3. We are facing a global education crisis. According to recent reports, over 250 million children are in need of urgent educational support. And it seems the situation is getting more dire in some regions amid rising geopolitical tensions. Can you tell us more about the learning crisis facing children globally?
Q4. How is UNICEF responding to the global learning crisis, including efforts to support the most marginalized?
Q5. What would you say is UNICEF’s own comparative advantage in addressing the global learning crisis?
Q6. UNICEF has always been at the forefront of children’s education worldwide. But the organization also needs some outside support. Could you share what kind of support UNICEF requires to ensure access to basic education for the children most in need?
Q7. South Korea is notorious for its high education fever, now boasting one of the highest literacy, and college entrance rates in the world. And it has a unique history of transforming itself from a donor recipient to a donor nation. How has Korea contributed to UNICEF’s education initiatives?
Q8. Korea has set this year's budget for official development assistance, or ODA, at a record high of 6.3 trillion won, or roughly US$4.7 billion as it seeks to take on a bigger role on the global stage. From your perspective, how can Korea further boost its cooperation with UNICEF and support for global education?
Q9. Before you became UNICEF’s new Global Director of Education and Adolescent Development, you were also a political scientist and a former professor at Yale University with extensive experience in early childhood development. With your wealth of expertise, what are your key goals for your tenure?
And that brings us to the end of this show.
Thank you for watching, and be sure to tune in same time tomorrow to join our conversation.
    Good bye for now.
