I was hoping you’d mention the Paul Oakenfold song! I had known she could sing from her little Mentos jingle moment in Clueless, but when I first heard that song and then found out that it was Brittany singing, I was floored that it wasn’t common knowledge that she had such a strong voice.

I remember when she died, that the immediate reaction from tabloids was “did she overdose? Did she overdose?”, and then when it came out that she died of pneumonia, it was treated as though it was a euphemism for a drug overdose. You know, like when starlets “collapsed and needed to rest”, and were torn to shreds for it.
Every time I think of the 00s and tabloid culture, I just get so mad. Just, pure goddamn rage. They destroyed so many lives. And a lukewarm apology now doesn’t make it any better.
They killed her, just like they killed Lady Di, just like they almost killed Britney and Amanda Bynes, and Lindsay Lohan (who also had so much more potential than she was given credit for).
The media was so dead set on it being an overdose, I didn't even know until literally this video that her death was completely unrelated to drugs. Granted, I've never followed celebrity gossip closely, but I remember it being talked about *so much* right after she died, and eeeveryone was saying it was because of drugs. As if an overdose wouldn't have been tragic enough. Jesus Christ.
Hate to break the news to you, I really do; she was awesome. Terrible tragedy.

(This will get long, I apologize in advance.)
See, my sisters were huge fans too; one is a Registered Nurse, and the other got her doctorate in Nursing. They explained the subtle nuances at play here because it’s very personally relevant to me.
Of the all the possible causes of death, pneumonia is basically an oversimplification.
It is as a “Murder on the Orient Express” scenario. Heavy metal poisoning, toxic mold, medication overdose (read: not street drugs, prescription medication), anemia, “tabloid culture”, as well as pneumonia “most likely” all played their part.
“Most likely” because the fine lines & distinctions can’t be separated & proven. It’s like trying to unmake soup at this point, and would have been difficult to diagnose even prior to her death (unless she was hospitalized in a “White Room”).
The type of iron-deficient induced anemia listed as a secondary factor suggests she was fighting off something. Lifestyle, diet, genetics; it’s very common with many possible causes. Not fatal on its own, typically.
The mold (proven to exist) must have set off an immune response (which primarily can only be detected using living samples, even with modern tech). But it effected her husband in a similar fashion.
She probably self-treaded it using generic over the counter medication to keep herself upright, for quite a while before she died (which often contains trace elements of heavy metals; either as filler or is less refined in the first place than brand name medications).
She was already on a dangerous cocktail of drugs that didn’t exactly play nice together according to the toxicology; before any other over the counter meds added; that particular mixture of drugs isn’t simply like lighting the candle at both ends, but throwing the whole damn thing into the furnace.
(It’s the same drugs I’m on; I chose them because the alternative is worse, but I wouldn’t be offered the choice by any ethical doctor if there was a better alternative, otherwise. I fully understand that on a long enough timeline, they will kill me one day).
The treatment does funny things to a person, including making them appear erratic & really talkative. You don’t really sleep. You don’t really feel hungry. But you’re never really awake either, or aware what it is you’re craving. A bite to eat, a nap, a quick trip to the bathroom; you find ways to distract this need you can’t quite identify, much less scratch. All you know for sure is there’s a constant craving that keeps you awake at night (which leads to massive weight loss).
This eventually lead to “walking pneumonia” eventually setting in. Often. And you don’t go in to see a doctor not because you’re scared, because for you it’s business as usual, and doctors ultimately dismiss anything not actively killing you or they can’t actually fix immediately. That’s just how triage works. There are specialists available, but their time is dependent on one picking up your case. Often they focus on people who’s cases are more severe & arguably more in need of their services (especially during a pandemic).
In the meantime “the show must go on”, especially so under the microscope of “tabloid culture” I imagine; very much only a place she chose to be when she dreamt of being a pop media icon (in which we ourselves have our own roles to play as her audience, critics & fans alike).
Yet do what you have to while keeping on pushing forward, that was her choice, to the point where it all added up to enough to eventually kill her.
All I’m saying in all this is you don’t really get to point fingers unless you’re willing to take some blame, and even there she should get her share too.
...Or it’s simply a massive oversight of many including us who enjoyed her ability & her films, leading to a tragic accident.
How do you want to spin this. There valid arguments either way. But because of Murphy death, I know exactly what I’ve gotten myself into & don’t blame anyone.
(Don’t get me wrong, I still have to ask myself, “Why am I doing this again...???” every so often, but short of a bad draw at the genetic lottery, there’s no fault to assign. The secondary contributing factor on my own death certificate will be “misadventure of medication” too most likely. Immune disorders Areca living nightmare, until they finally finish the job.)
Now if you read this far, may the powers that be bless; again, none of this can be definitively proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. From personal experience however, you’re not seeing the whole picture.; it’s like merely being the audience the tabloids are pandering to.
Strangely, I’d have like to longer & happier career than I’ll likely have the option of seeing. But I’m already ancient compared to the age she was when she died, that’s how it works done times. I’ve made my peace with that too.

As in, I haven’t so much as talked about with my current therapist, or my sisters who I went t for advice before making the decision to begin this treatment when the others failed.
Tough pill to swallow knowing I’m stuck taking drugs that will kill me in order to survive.
I don’t know why this was a stranger, let alone you, or under a topic about someone I’d have simply referred to as “that funny girl from ‘Clueless’. No, not her, or her either; did you even watch the film? The funny one, now she had talent!”
Can’t say I truly understood the concept of the term dying by degrees until recently. Now I can, and evidently have started, essays about the depths of it meaning.
I guess I’m just saying I know I would want anyone blaming anyone else of the choices I made just to continue. Can’t speak for Miss Murphy or Lady Di
(..and I bet she had whole moments to actually be livid at the several parties involved in what would eventually lead to her death; the press chasing her, the driver escorting her to safety that didn’t actually the ability to do so, her own decision to hire or maybe not personally oversee who was behind the wheel of the vehicle she was in before she got into it, maybe for relying on them to begin with..)
Just that I got dealt a bad hand personally, can’t hold any against how things have gone since then on anyone else but me (no matter how much I might want there to be someone else when things get a little dicey every so often.)

Being an actress in the early 2000s seems like a real rough time. Treated so horribly people think because they see you act in a film they own you and are entitled to your whole life. And in the early 2000s when the tabloids were filled with the relationship, parental, and mental struggles of celebrities met with only cruelty from reporters and the public, it just seems like such a rough thing to endure.

The opening clips is why I never believed she used drugs. She had a gregarious personality her whole life. She was unique but also had interesting nonverbal behaviors in her interviews.
You could tell how passionate she was about performing, how she just wanted people to take her and her talents seriously. She was a rare creature in Hollywood: effortlessly talented and a genuinely kind, decent person. I’ll always miss her.

I completely second this thought! Brittany was such a talented and charismatic actress, and it's a shame that she didn't get more of a mainstream career. We lost her far too early at the age of 32, and I like to imagine that in a parallel universe, she had the successful career that she always deserved.

It's no coincidence I'm in love with Winona Ryder and Dakota Fanning. They all have that same aura about them, I wish we could have seen her full potential. I'm sure they carry a piece of her legacy.

I have to say after all the revelations of comediennes and actresses branded "difficult" because they wouldn't submit to sexual advances or "casting couch" offers, my immediate thought when you mentioned the sudden shift to labelling Murphy as "difficult" was who she refused....

Uptown Girls deserves Legally Blonde or Mean Girls popularity! That was one of my favorite movies growing up. Brittany brought magic to every role she played. I’m 40 and remember following her story closely. I always felt she was a sensitive, empathic soul who was crushed by the demands Hollywood and society put on actresses, particularly back then. It was painful to watch her wither away. That being said, I recall the last taped interview before her passing (she was at an art event?). She was delirious; her condition could have been the result of acute illness and dehydration, but substance abuse could certainly also be considered.
Also, I believe she died of heart failure secondary to the burdens that the chronic malnutrition of eating disorders places on the body. Heart failure is the primary cause of death in those who suffer with anorexia. Regardless, this was a beautiful tribute to Britney and a tragic commentary to the accepted abuses in Hollywood.

@Antonio Bianchi She died of pneumonia. It was theorised mold was the cause, but it's been dismissed. The multiple medicine and her already weakened state might have contributed, but it was pneumonia. She could have developed pneumonia from something that was not related to the mold.

I remember the backlash back in the 2000s when I was a kid and even though I didn’t have to mindset to put into words what I felt, I just knew what they were doing to her was wrong. When she passed away I was in high school at the time and like you said everyone was talking about her but not for her extraordinary/brilliant acting skills but for the mystery behind her death 🤦🏻♀️ which was always so sad to me because it seemed like everyone forgot she was a well known actress. All people cared about was “Why? How? Was the house haunted?” I love and respect how you shedded light on her entire legacy, not her death. Beautifully well done.

I was so happy that she paired up with somebody so worthy and I was so surprised of her singing Talent. This video was the first time I learned that she was in Happy Feet. Everytime I watch this video I feel like crying. I loved Brittany Murphy as a child. She was the only actress I would get excited to watch. It broke my heart when she died and it makes me really sad how her life and career ended. And now barely anyone even remembers her anymore. Damn... I feel like doing a marathon of her movies now.
Another role of hers that often gets overlooked is in Spun. As a former meth user myself, I cannot stress enough how authentically she played that character. People assume that all it takes to play an addict is to act like a mess but there’s so much more nuance to it. There’s layers! I’d say she even captured it better than Jennifer Connolly did in Requiem For A Dream.

I'm glad you could overcome that horrible addiction, I have 2 close friend who overcame it as well and it does take a toll on the person addicted and those around them, and this movie, specifically Britneys character was a trigger for them, that is how great she was at performing.

For most ppl its prob a minor thing, but w/ my auditory processing issues it's difficult to watch youtube videos w/o them, and the auto-generated ones are often less than ideal, especially depending on the accent of the person speaking. Not just having captions, but also making them accurate and quality is honestly one of the (many) reasons this is one of my favorite yt channels.

My favourite role from Britney is still Luanne from King of the Hill. She did so many characters and had so much range with nothing but her voice. With sequences like the manger babies and other characters, Britney gets to show off just how versatile her talent was and her comedic timing.
My favourite episode, and many other people’s favourite, “Wings of the Dope”, is all about Luanne and her journey as a character as she works through grief and makes a better life for herself.
King of the Hill is arguably still the most famous of all the projects Britney was attached to. The show ended mere months before she passed. It wouldn’t have been nearly as wonderful as it was without her.
