  • The former monastery at Pentney Abbey was founded around 1130 by Robert De Vaux. The Priory was dissolved in 1537 by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and sold to the Earl of Rutland. Many of the buildings were dismantled and the stone was re-used elsewhere. The 14th century medieval gatehouse was one of few buildings to survive and after recent restoration is currently being used as a wedding venue. Nearby Marham Abbey/Nunnery also fell victim to dissolution and now lies in ruins. The building once housed 15 nuns who were under the leadership of Sister Barbara. She reputedly devised an evil plan to create revenue in order to fund her lavish lifestyle. Men of ill repute were bribed to rob and leave wounded any rich merchant who passed nearby to the abbey on the narrow track which led to a hill in Marham (known then as Vinegar Hill). The tall, dark hedges lining the road was the perfect place for robbers to hide and wait to pounce on unsuspecting travellers. Once the attack had taken place Sister Barbara would arrive at the scene and take the wounded back to Marham Abbey and nurse them back to health. The merchants and their families would be so grateful that they would shower gifts on the abbey and hail Sister Barbara as their saviour. Story broke of Marham Abbey’s growing wealth leading to suspicion from the monks at nearby Pentney Abbey. Soon Sister Barbara was caught by one of the monks after he witnessed her pay a villain for his services. After a summary hearing, the wicked nun learnt her fate. Sister Barbara was bricked up alive behind a wall at Marham Abbey. Her ghost is said to be seen gliding silently near Vinegar Hill as she patrols the road, still waiting for rich travellers. It is claimed the spirit of Sister Barbara is most likely to be seen on moonlit November nights.

Surely there must be a haunting associated with the nun? Worthy of an investigation.👍
