  • How were the cyborgs in 'Alita: Battle Angel' created? Watch this brand new #VFX breakdown reel to get insight into DNEG's creature (cyborg) animation which included the ‘Factory Gang’ in the crazy bar fight scene, as well as the cyborg, ‘Amok’ in the Ido flashback scene. In addition to creature work, there was quite a bit of environment work completed for the pick-up rollerball game, as well as the addition of all rollerball skates within that same sequence. Enjoy!

    The vfx in this movie was amazing, I never even noticed in any way the skates were CG or the cyborg body of the guy killing Ido’s daughter was fully CG except the head. Fantastic work DNEG!

      "the cyborg body of the guy killing Ido’s daughter was fully CG except the head."
      I know right, I thought it was prosthetics make-up grafted on the actor when I watched the movie in theaters!

    It's incredible how people only focus on Alita like she's the only CG heavy character in the movie even though every cyborgs are CG except their heads. Zapan's body is mind-bogglingly photo-realistic in every single shots. Also Grewishka is as incredible as Alita since he looks nothing like Jackie Earle Healey in appearance and stature.
    Also at 2:36, are the stunts actually full CG characters or did they used dummies for reference to synchronize the plate's footage of the stunt guys with the CG explosion? They don't seem to have clothes simulation and what not.

    • @RyoMassaki
      @RyoMassaki 5 лет назад +3

      They probably used those CG dummies for integration of several effects. Like the smoke and debris is colliding and interacting with the bodies. Volumetric effects can be more easily combined with real footage if you have an 3D stand in. It can be for shadow catching or shadow casting purposes and integrating these in the live action footage. All sorts of things could be done to make the real live footage work better with the cg stuff.

      It was the same with Star Wars Whatever(TM) with Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing, people completely forgot that there where lots of other people around the table on the death star who where now dead. I feel maybe the aforementioned actor's teams over did the job due to, very possibly, people from the studio breathing down the neck of a team of art directors and the insistant 'Change this, change that!' led to a path different from woudl could and indeed should have happened. Its like that if you spend too long looking at something without recourse to the real world and archived references.
