MyFestivus that’s what she is trying to say the world is so caught up on appearance they don’t ever see you for who you are. She is trying to get people to be aware of that and fix the situation by saying looks aren’t everything there is in life
hallelu lee But looks play a HUGE factor. You can probably talk to a pretty girl and get her number but it is VERY difficult, that is why you are better off working on looks, plus since when do you see an ugly man walk with a pretty woman? Unless they were already friends before.
Of course attractive people have some issues in life cos of their looks (i think especially females), but the advantages weigh out the disadvantages by far in my opinion. Everybody in the range from "really ugly" to "incredibly beautiful" has reasons to complain somehow, but i think almost everybody knows where he/she wants to place himself if he/she could choose his/her looks. No where even near average ;)
@@giovannaroma9527 unattractive people get every chance.... Too often they're just too caught up in the pretentious superficialities of a tacky consumerist society, looking in all the wrong places for all the wrong things to even entertain the idea.
I think the title conveys the message well. When someone says that something "isn't everything", the implication is "although it's big, it's not everything". And she went on to say that society places too much importance on something that is actually very superficial. Moreover, good looks don't shield you from insecurities.
I don’t think most people in the comments understand the point she is trying to make. She’s not saying that looks don’t matter. She says that no matter how beautiful other people perceive you at the end of the day you can still be very insecure and unhappy with your looks.
People like to think that if they were more beautiful, skinnier etc they would not be insecure, they would be happy and basically all their problems would go away. They get mad and jealous when beautiful people talk about being insecure. They probably feel like beautiful people don’t have the right to be insecure. But being insecure in reality has nothing to do with how you look. You can always find someone more beautiful than yourself. And like she says the more you focus on the way you look, regardless of how you actually look, the more insecure you are. Cause the more you focus on it the more flaws you find. The best way to learn how to be confident in your looks is to find a way to accept that you don’t look perfect and that you might not even be especially beautiful at all and try your best to not put your worth in your appearance. I’m not saying this is easy. But it is easier and better than changing your looks only to find that you still feel insecure.
It same like flexing with money. People dont want to hear that others are doing so much better than themselves. (especially when its not anyhow "deserved" or worked for)
@@thegameshows1 Freedom is the currency to buy happiness. Money can not provide freedom every time. It depends on which is the reason to be happy for an individual.

She made a very important point: she won the genetic lottery. That’s not something you can strive for, and yet our society places so much importance on physical appearance. I wish her speech was longer, I can tell she has much more to say.

I come from a smallest village in eastern europe and poor abusive family that raised me into an unsociable introvert with issues. The main thing that made me break thru is my looks. @@ralphpinkins5619 Oh, but it does. @@todanrg3 you're proving my point. God gave these individuals good looks. But that's their obstacle to overcome as well as their advantage. You cant compare apples and oranges and then say life is easier. That's like comparing struggles.
I think I know where she's getting at. At first, I noticed she was really nervous from the way she laughs and breathes, and the look she's giving to everyone. She really showed that insecurity and for her to admit that even though she's a model is quite amazing. She may be a model but that doesn't mean she has the greatest life ever. She showed humility and care from people she doesn't even know. I'll give her 10/10 for that.
Because no one was going to take her seriously so i totally get it...im glad she was brave enough to speak on it. Because she could be blacklisted. Bravo to her
I love that she is really open about the modeling industry. Lots of young girls look up to all the models they see in magazines; it's important to teach them that most of these pictures are altered and almost completely reconstructed.

I used to be morbidly obese, I lost weight. The contrast to how im treated now compared to then is revealing about society. People can be really shallow and often don't even realize it.
Well, it's a reflection of character. Obesity looks like: irresponsible, doesn't care about self, no discipline. It's mean, but we want friends that are like us to some degree. If I'm successful, wealthy, good-looking and in relatively good health, I'm going to want similar people around me. Everyone else is just part of the hi-bye culture. It's how we navigate a population of 326 million people. It's human nature. At least we don't cannibalize opponent tribes anymore.
Yea being overweight is rough , it's important not to dehumanise people based on their weight especially because some weight issues both being overweight and underweight are linked to mental health issues , the fact is you don't know if somebody is just lazy or is in fact severely depressed and being self-destructive. They could have been trough god knows what and use food to escape , they may lie in their beds all day because they have no self-worth are super depressed. Those who are overweight are people too and deserve to be treated as people. You don't have to encourage obesity to show kindness and tolerance towards these kinds of struggles , what we need is to be supportive to make people who are overweight feel that they aren't horrible people and that the importance of losing weight is for them ; for their health and mobility not for them to become passable as human beings just to become healthier and freezer ! Well done for losing the weight btw (= I'm sorry you felt people treated you as a lesser person because of your weight that's not right.

As long as they are good people I'll be their friend and I don't see fat people as bad people , fat people can be loving , caring , giving , funny and smart and that's what I care about. Don't get me wrong though I wouldn't encourage them to be fat , but I would love them despite it and if I could help them lose weight I would want to , but not because them being slim makes them a better friend but because I care for them I would want them to be in good health.

@Jeff Jedi, looks are not everything, nor required to be accepted. Confidence and treating others as respectable is sexy. Haven't you ever seen an average looking guy with a sexy woman? I have.
Ugly people just use their looks as an excuse not to better themselves. If you’re funny, kind and confident then so many doors open up. Looks are the first thing people notice, but who you are is what stays with people.
Well possibly yes but as a woman being confident doesn't matter. I'm confident about myself even tho I'm ugly (Im just being realistic). You can see average looking guys with pretty girls but you'll never see good looking guys with average looking woman.

I find it amazing how so many people can watch the same thing and get two completely different messages out of it. She clearly stated that what we see on the magazine covers/pages, isn't her. It's a "Construction" of her. How much clearer can she be. That one sentence speaks volumes. Maybe if she pointed out how short term a model's career is or how her looks will fade with time and gravity, some of you wouldn't be so negative. Society pays far to much attention on the packaging instead of the contents. You can be beautiful on the outside but when gravity and age have taken their toll, all you are left with is who you truly are. And that can only be found on the inside. That is what we need to pay attention too. And I don't know about any of you, but I would much rather be beautiful on the inside because that's the person you live with 24 hours a day. And no amount of money would be worth a temporary superficial beauty and a hateful and miserable soul that you have to live with your entire life. And there are many people in this world that fit that description. They have my sympathy. Simply my humble opinion.
Taylor Reyland I thank you so much for taking the time to share your kind words with me. It's so good to know there are others out there who have the same perception on certain things in life that I do. I sometimes wondered if it was just me who looked at things differently.
Wonderful words of inspiration right there...I once wanted to be a model when I was 16 and now? Whats changed? I have learnt to be my own model, my own image, a self that the world would look at and say God bless you, I use my beauty meticulously using it to attract men and women so that they could see my words of wisdom, with every perfect picture I upload, I attach a life inspiring quote to it, so when people see me, all they would want to do is believe in themselves and be inspired. Am glad I did not become 'the' model because I could have lost myself to this self 'constructed' look. Plus I also think models should be appreciated more, since theh give away themselves to show off the art of others that are passionate of their work be it hair, clothes, makeup, campaign or shoes. it isn't like that at all... you're still not getting the point of this. People that rely solely on their looks are bound to be extremely insecure. Looks fade, dumb is forever...
@@elastronaute1198 We get that... I'm pretty sure 99% of people know what her main points were ahead of time. The irony is you don't get to say, "Trust me, because I am [insert topic]" because the people who don't benefit from that know what it's like to be on the other side of the fence and can see the privilege received. A great example is in dating. A young beautiful female or male has a significant advantage of finding a partner, especially male, if they are scaled 8+. That's because 80% of the women tend to be attracted to 20% of the men. So the other 80% of the men are having to fight tooth and nail for female attention, while the 20% look down and say, "ayy don't worry, it's not all that great". The issue is people say and want to do something positive, but on the other hand their actions say otherwise.

That was brave. In my opinion, she didn't say looks are nothing; she said that looks are not the end of who you are and should not be the end of your identity.
That is what you understood. What me - an ugly cis male understood is: She was handed everything on a silver platter, yet still it is not enough. I have had to work extremely hard to get where I am, maybe this is why I appreciate what I have achieved unlike her who got it all because she's pretty? Here is a good response for her: "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, well, you might find you get what you need".
@@Davide-xk4bg my point is that fashion is superficial from the very start no matter how you look at it. she paints a picture that fashion is racist and that this is bad. but fashion is SUPERFICIAL how can something that is so shallow and surface oriented be racist? is a person who is not attracted to certain people for example aborigines a racist?
If she thinks modeling restricts your identity, why doesn't she quit and get a different job? Maybe because she just wants to sound "noble" but still make money from her modeling.
I agree completely. I think her writing and editing for the timeslot reduced the potential of her sincere thoughts almost to quips. I think a great forum would be for her to chat, in comfortable clothes, about her experiences as a model, and what it does for you, and what it can never do for you. I'm sure she's got some great stories! It would be pretty damn interesting to hear from someone in the modeling trenches, and someone who also appears to be thoughtful about the parts of herself that are not a model. Hey Netflix, are you listening???
I really like the idea she is trying to portray. She is trying to tell us that despite how we look our personality and character is what matters most and if we choose to define ourselves by our looks we aren't going to go as far. I love the open honesty she gives the audience about the benefit she has as a white woman who fits into the standards in a luxury industry such as modeling and how she uses that to her advantage. I'd rather have people acknowledge their privilege than hide behind it. Cameron Russell is a successful model who has walked for luxury fashion houses such as Chanel and Versace.
She said that, and with the point being that looks rule a lot of things that it shouldn't be able to. Looks are not what there is to a person, yet society is built to value looks above all else. That's the real point. You can look good and receive benefits but be miserable at the same time for entirely different reasons, or you can look a certain "bad" way and life will treat you poorly despite your personality having nothing to do with how society judges you. The key thing is, that it's always harder to speak up when you are in the segment that in the majority's eyes is benefitting from what you are talking about. A millionaire says money isn't everything? Nobody cares. A model saying looks aren't everything? People rarely care. I think she struck a good balance between highlighting the ups and downs not just for her, but for everyone, which is difficult when coming from a position where people are less likely to value your words.
@@Real_MisterSir I disagree. I know what she is trying to say but I disagree with her perspective. This entire viewpoint (intentionally in a larger/societal sense, unintentionally on the individual level) induces guilt in women for the crime of having good genes.
I came to this talk many times and reconsidered about the message that she wanted to transfer. It's true that being beautiful is the advantage that we could get to be treated better in life. However, it's just a factor and it's important that we should not be obsessed about how we look. Social standards of beauty affects the society at large, even with the people like models are still insecure about their appearance. I truly appreciate that she came up stage and discussed that images of models are the results of the entire beauty industry and the real person can be totally different than we've imagined.
@Danji ASMR Český She not arrogant so much as self aware. She's attractive and she knows she is, because she'd have been told that her whole life and she makes a living out of it. She doesn't make it out that she's better than everyone else though and she says herself that she just got lucky.

I think that took a lot of courage for her to go on that stage and talk about those things in a very honest and vulnerable way. I think your talk shed light on some important topics and gave a window of insight into the life and mind of a model. For others who had the assumptions that models are happy all the time or have "perfect" lives, after watching this their minds may have changed and become more closely adjusted to the reality of the situation. Thank you for doing this, I enjoyed listening to it.
looks are like a first door to a person. if you’re beautiful then that door is opened and people will go to the second door which is personality, who you really are, etc. if you’re not attractive then the first door remains closed and people won’t even bother trying to get to know you. Beautiful people say looks don’t matter simply because it’s something they don’t struggle with (so eventually personality will become their main focus) You can be unhappy for various reasons, but it’s unfair to say something doesn’t matter because /you/ don’t struggle with it. Ideally we all should focus on what’s inside but the vast majority of people will never bother that much if they’re not impressed after a first, superficial glance towards someone.
The problem is when you cannot go to the second door because you're Latino or dark-skinned... Those are things we must work on to change in modern societies. Less worse that how do you look physically is not the only component of the first door, but also, how are you dressed, how do you talk, how do you behave and even your body expressions.
You don’t have to be beautiful to get people to “go to the second door.” You’re basically saying that you’ve never seen an unattractive person with friends before or you’ve never seen an unattractive person in a relationship before. It‘s about confidence and personality, which good looking people tend to have more of (for obvious reasons) and that’s why they’re more popular or have more people going after them.

I worked for a short time in a strip club - not my proudest moment - and I noticed the same insecurity in the women there. And it makes sense - when your entire life, your entire sense of self-worth, is built strictly around your looks, it seems only natural to be insecure about it, attractive or not.
Thanks for her honest and it let me know that everyone has their own difficulties in life. Looks does influence us in our daily life, how people treat you or if they respect you. That kind of people are superficial so we don't have to care about what others think of us. Just be yourself!!
Exactly! She's not saying looks don't matter. She's given multiple examples that it DOES matter and that she privileges from this fact. That's why she made this TED Talk. The people in this comment section really don't understand the point.
Why are people still ignoring the point of this talk? She's literally admitting her privilege and pointing out both the biases and superficiality of the fashion industry (which can severely affect the body and beauty image of young girls everywhere) and the way people judge others based solely on physical appearance (RACE, gender, weight, hair color etc). The first part to fixing a problem is letting it be known. But if you ignore her message because you're actually just jealous she was lucky enough to be born physically attractive, you're LITERALLY contributing to the problem. This is an important message.
TheAlphadog I understand your points, it really all boils down to personal opinion and how the individual perceives these issues. The most significant part for me, though, is concerning young girls. I do disagree with you on that, only because girls in these newer generations (due to the accessibility of social media and the presence of advertisements everywhere) are almost always surrounded by what society considers the ideal body type/beauty. Usually the ideal is portrayed as a beautiful woman with lovely skin and a fit body, perfect hair teeth and nails, etc. If the girl doesn't have a strong enough body image of herself (you know, the low self esteem middle school years are super common) nor is she taught to realize that the people presented to her in ads/social media aren't necessarily 'attainable' (not sure how to word this part my apologies) she might become desperate to achieve these ideals and do something dangerous like starve herself or even become depressed. It's the same for boys too, I'm sure many have gone through periods of low self esteem and depression due to not being 'ideal' (ofc I don't know for sure, I wouldn't know what it's like to grow up as a boy in this age). Mostly I just support the fashion industry introducing images of health rather than unattainable beauty, ethnic diversity for poc representation (a young latina girl may not feel beautiful if the only beautiful women she knows about are all white, for example) that sort of thing. Education in general needs a lot of work, but we can't forget that children retain a lot of information from social media/advertising. It's like another educational outlet, so we gotta make sure they're not contributing anything potentially harmful. xx

Society doesn't "tell" people what is beautiful, that's just ridiculous. Have you ever had a friend who thought someone was super attractive, but you didn't find them that way yourself? Attraction has everything to do with biology and you perception of healthy. All those things you listed are signals of a healthy person that our subconscious picks up on so we can attempt to reproduce with them. Has nothing to do with the media. I agree with you on body image though, but seeing as how the average weight has started to go up and obesity has increased, heart diseases also. There should be a limit to what we actually tell young girls and boys. There are more benefits for a person to being fit, eating healthy and exercising than there is to eat bad foods and being told to love yourself anyway. That is completely backwards. Everything else though I completely agree, but unfortunately, you live in a free market society. So magazines can publish what they want depending on the demand.
TheAlphadog It's not blatant, I just personally believe having a majority unattainable image is subtle enough to cause harm to any young person who may not know better. A shift towards healthy bodies is definitely the move. If ads only include vv beautiful and the vv skinny, kids won't know that not everybody can obtain that body healthily. But you're right, it depends on demand. Money over all :(
I love what she says about those pictures being constructions. They are not real. Models like Cameron are the raw materials that beauty illusionists use to create a faux view of women and beauty. These are painful illusions.

I can't believe some of the comments here!!? She is NOT saying "looks don't matter"....or anything of that nature! She is saying that as somebody who inherited good looks and made a career based on that, it doesn't mean that her life is always fabulous or that she is constantly happy and self contented. In fact she is MORE insecure than the average person because she knows she only has a career because of how she looks, not because she did anything to deserve it.
JohnTheBaptist Yes thats also true. The western standard of physical beauty is rather narrow and geared strongly toward white people, and thats no coincidence.
how can you say she didn't deserved it? she is a model bc she took care of her physical appearance more and that's an effort. I don't like the way you put the sentence. looks is very subjective it's a matter of being self confident and content with oneself. modelling industry is more than look having what you say "genetic lottery"
saniyauzumaki I didn't say she "didn't deserve it". I said being tall, white, with fair skin and a pretty face are not something a person "deserves" through having done anything to earn them. You either get lucky in the gene pool or you don't. It's not like you can go to college and learn how to be tall, slim and pretty like you can go there to earn a degree and get a career that way. Therefore it is not something that is "deserved" or not deserved it is mostly just luck of the draw. Yes I am sure she eats well and exercises....which are things everybody should do, not just models. That doesn't mean anything.
Hot person "looks aren't everything" "Easy for you to say! You've never had to worry about your looks!l Ugly person:"looks aren't everything" "You're just trying to comfort yourself of your ugliness!" I guess nobody wins
Ironically, looks Are everything for perfect looking people; people look them only by their looks, not by other characteristics of them, and fail to see them as fellow human, because they are so shiny and inhumanely well organized physically. But I guess that's the reason why they complain 'looks aren't everything'; they want to be look as a human.
L CC she didn't say it's a problem. She pointed out that life isn't fair and society isn't fair. It favors the pretty ones and you have no control whether or not you will get that gene, so don't weight your happiness on your look because you will end up unhappy. Don't over look all the things you could be doing that don't require winning genetic lotteries. Even if you have the gene to look beautiful you might still be the most insecure woman and people won't take you seriously because you were once an underwear model.

@ldyson22 in reality, since you will have to experience wealth and poverty, health and illness, beauty and ugliness, being a woman and a man, being white and being black. The important thing is: how you behaved as poor, and how you behaved as rich. I think anyone can answer that question honestly.

Someone here is trying hard to find a reason why she is not considered beautiful. Maybe it's because you are not. Racism is not the issue. Inequality is not the issue. You are just not attractive, get over it.
Its not that since they have it they don't care....maybe their's too much imp put on this just like diamonds are valued so much but at the end of the day its just a stone when u look at it without prejudice it won't make u any happy to even if u have it.
@Elisson Dormezil First of all, my intent was like to write something like meme anyways(i hope i would get lol, haha or 🤣) but it also radiate the reality where they may say and show that those things aren't everything to them but they tend to forget or rather unsee the fact that they are and known mainly because of the things they said don't matter, as you said at first they are not born rich or beautiful and all, but initially they do crave or want to achieve it, once goal is reached they tend to show less interest consciously (though subconsciously they always want to retain and also increase it) , and this is also a psychological fact, they do talk about immaterial things of important and morals, but they tend to keep double standards between said and done (plz don't give exceptions cuz i know some) and as you talked of realistic you might know the REALITY or TRUTH of things that matter in every day world.[By the way, since in Asia(i am from india) parents are very strict about academic result and the one who do get extraordinary high score or marks are called toppers means to top in EVERYTHING, and they are very respected and looked by other]
You guys in the comment section are basically why she made this talk. Just because you were treated poorly because of how you look, you also believe that people should be treated based on their appearance too? She was brave okay? Doing this could cost her her only job but she did it anyway. And you keep on complaining. Just treat others the way you wanted to be treated, it'll pay off.
Then i feel sorry for those who treated you that way. Cause i've been there too, but that doesn't mean im gonna stop helping others or treating others poorly at all.
+Belletaina Lol, for fuck's sake. Looks only matter to superficial people to begin with and for superficial reasons at that. If you care about that, then that's sad in and of itself. True love isn't about looks at all, for one. Neither is friendship.
Nicu Drosu IDK about you man but it effects me pretty much every day of my life and it really sucks. Some times I just sit and think why it had to happen to me haha you don't know the struggle if you haven't been in these shoes lol which is why when people with good looks say crap like this.
There is a thing in psychology called the "Halo Effect", that means people who are better looking and more physically attractive, are generally perceived as more intelligent, more successful and happier people in their lives
Because they have experience with it. You wouldn't take a poor and ugly person seriously if they said money and beauty aren't everything, you'd think they're just saying that to feel better about themselves. Have you ever heard of the phrase "More money, more problems."? A lot of self-made rich people commit suicide because of the pressure they're under and all the fake people around them.
@@cutienerdgirl "...you wouldn't take a poor and ugly person seriously". Yup, you are just saying what it is.. lol. The attention a beautiful woman receives is better than a ugly one.
The point is. Society judges by the way you look. It’s not right, but it is what it is. Hate the game not the player. And learn how to fkin play the game on the right way!

I doubt safe made millionaires are having a sad life.
To everyone hating on this talk, consider this- she probably just eight-balled herself by giving this talk, i.e. she likely pissed off a lot of potential employers for her. This took guts, both in terms of coming to grips with the only personal reality she's ever known, and in terms of calling it how it is in the face of impending professional backlash. Did she cure cancer? No. But you have to appreciate her candidness and honesty in spite of an industry largely shrouded in a mum's-the-word approach to results transparency.
***** If more people like her would do exactly what she just did, they would inspire the current and next generation to stop hating themselves and hating what they can't have. It may not fix cancer, but it certainly helps to fix the mass mental illness of today's society that we are all subject to or directly take part in.
***** Not really. I've seen a few behind the scenes of a fashion runaway. And a few of the make-up artists, stylist and designers have vocalized their preference for aware/ smart models. They're not all stuck-up and unaware; or even unconcerned about the trappings of superficiality of their business. In fact, they're more aware of it than most, arguably. And people like Cameron Russell may indeed find like minded people in her business; sympathetic and understand the pros and cons of a constructed image-emphasized work environment. And it's not like she did a Katherine Heigl, wherein she outright dismissed the industry. Cameron Russell actually inspired her would-be predecessors to aim higher than a model. 'BE HER BOSS' - if they want to be in this type of work. Anyways, she also said she "was" a model, meaning she might have retired. I don't know, I've only just heard of her after seeing this video. Ah, this comment is to the 'she probably just eight-balled herself by this talk.'
I've had two VERY good-looking girlfriends in the past, and they definitely live in a different world. Everywhere we went, men fell all over themselves to do anything they could to gain their attention and favor. One girlfriend forgot her debit card, and got free gas. The other got employment pretty much anywhere she wanted, despite being vastly under qualified. And these are just two examples of the dozens of situations I saw while dating each of them. The world fell at their feet, because of their beauty.
***** I am also - 'fairly good looking' i have my DP so i guess you can judge yourself. I also try to be mild mannered, and i believe fairly similar things happen to me as him . . . I think its just his observations, no need to judge him that way
***** Nice try. I think we both know you're talking bollox as per usual. I think it's time again for you to remind us all online on how good looking and successful you are. Say it over and over again until there can be no doubt! ;-)
There are a lot of comments on here about how she is a hypocrite for being beautiful/rich/fill-in-the-blank and saying that all of that stuff isn't important. You are all missing the point. She is saying that it IS important, but that it SHOULDN'T BE. She is being so brave and vulnerable by standing up on stage and admitting that the world she benefits from is the same world others get hurt by. You can't criticize a model for being blind to her privileges and then criticize her for seeing and standing up against those same privileges. She can't change the way she looks and how the world favors her, so I commend her for doing SOMETHING to combat this issue.
Anyone who thinks that looks don’t matter has never been attractive & unattractive before. I’ve experienced being overweight & unattractive, and thin and very attractive. And believe me when i tell you... LOOKS MATTER! They affect the way people (men and women) treat you. Your love life. Your Access to different places. I was hired for jobs i wasn’t qualified for, because of how i looked. Everything is affected by how you look. Everything! Anyone who’s says anything different is lying, or doesn’t know better. Period.
They do. Whether humans want to admit it or not we do categorize people involuntarily. My Asian parents are at my throat for not being pretty enough and not withstanding the standards
can we all just appreciate her for actually admitting that her looks have helped her in life, because quite a lot of good-looking people through no fault of their own, who have been given this privilege and have been treated better by everyone because of it, just don’t realise it. I’m a not so attractive lad, and believe me, LOOKS MATTER SO MUCH! they really do. and it’s not just the opposite gender that treat u better, it’s friends, aunties, uncles, colleagues, kids, elders, teachers, strangers as well... I’m not saying looks are everything but oh my, they do matter a lot. I remember having a good looking best friend in high school who had the most boring personality ever and still made a lot of more friends than me. And girls would roll out a red carpet for him. And he was every teachers favourite
Yup, I also like how she didnt go so far down that path where it turned to guilt though. She's gorgeous and its good that's she's clearly self aware enough to recognize that it has benefited her greatly (surprised she didn't mention her families affluence more though), and that's all that matters, it's no more her fault that the world desires her than it the fault of a person who can't even look good in the dark that the world does not.
I think looks matter only with strangers, People I don't know treat me like I'm a princess but my friends, family, close people basically, treat me like a normal person. In the beginning people are all nice but as they get to now you better, the attitude changes ? I don't know how to explain it, like they don't change in a bad way, rather start treating you like a normal human being.
Most of my so called friends ignored me most of the time never even invited me to go with them anywhere i literally didnt talk in the company because they ignored me and this has been happening in every group i was...i dont know why though i was super friendly tried to talk about what they like but they just still didnt like me and always THEY would try to get rid of me...so friends don't always treat u good when u are attractive....Once i showed one painting to my friend and she said its gorgeous and the other girl said its ugly...it was literally very beautiful
I don't think anyone actually listened to what she said. "looks DO matter!!! shes so wrong LOL" You didn't listen. She talked about how she's treated differently because she's physically attractive, and how it's unfair. She's arguing the same point you are.
I understand her point, but so what? Acknowledging that you are privileged is not going to change anything. She still benefited from her looks. It's unfair but that's life, we are all born with different abilities. Somebody who is naturally athletic has more chance of becoming a sports pro. Is she going to give back all the money she has made or give it away to less fortunate looking people? I don't think so.
As a kind of introvert and insecure person myself I can feel her. The story she's conveyed is not really appealing to most people but hey, she's told us her story with a good and honest heart from her specific background. You don't have to be poor, in suffered or disadvantaged minorities or community to have a stand to talk of what you want like hey you're white you should not talk of the black, you're rich you have no right to talk of the poor, you're beautiful you have no idea of the ugly, and so on. That's insecure to me.
yes, that's so true. I have been struggling with self confidence for my whole life, but there is so much more to live for than your looks. We're humans, life is too short to let our looks define us. We know what is best for ourselves, we should be kind to ourselves, and whatever holds true to us is who we really are. Anyone should be allowed share what they would like, because judgement and stigma should not stop us from having a voice.
no hate but just realise the truth behind it ...she is beautiful and is earning so much if money by her looks and getting paid for sayung looks dont matter ....how cheap is this ..even she is trying to earn money ..i bet she is of those students or girls bullying the beautiful soules ...she dosent have any personality but only looks and still earning ...
People without money always think money is everything. Well it's not, sorry. Money is certainly something- it gives you comfort, but it's most definitely not everything. I've known plenty of miserable people with money- I can even think of one who committed suicide :(
What's up with all the stupid "hot white chick tells us beauty isn't everything" comments? Did you even listen to a word she said? She is saying exactly the opposite - that her success is thanks to her beauty which is the result of a genetic lottery, and also thanks to legacy of racial/cultural oppression. She is honest - if you aren't white or beautiful you need to find another way to succeed. And in the meantime - let's try and change the society so that it isn't so for future generations. Brutal and honest. Great talk.

Looks are not everything, but they do play a significant role in initial impressions and perceptions. It's a well-known phenomenon that some individuals who possess good looks can attract attention and interest despite having negative or toxic personalities. This attraction might be driven by superficial factors such as physical appearance, societal ideals of beauty, or even a fascination with confidence or charisma that often accompanies good looks.Unfortunately, individuals who are considered less conventionally attractive may face challenges in receiving equal attention, opportunities, or respect compared to their more visually appealing counterparts.

This is such a good Ted talk that is actually timeless bc looks will always matter to the human race as it is ingrained in our biological way of thinking. People don't get that she acknowledges this fact and actually tells us that she's priviliged with her looks and skin color. She never denied this and stays very factual about her privileges in comparison to those that don't have the same privilege as they don't fit the discription box. Being pretty paid her all the way to college but she wants to acomplish more in life then her looks and this Ted Talk was a part of it. Her insta is also very activist orientated and I applaud her for that. She has substance and we are now left with a generation of instagram teens that think everything that glitters turns into gold. They would have to see this to understand that there is more in life than having 100k followers and up.
tom, I think Su is talking about most normal circumstances. The richest and most admired people in the world will always be loved regardless of their looks because they are self-made people, they either had a privileged upbringing, terrific luck or sheer tenacity that paid off in the end. However, for every millionaire and every visionary there are thousands who are not so fortunate that have to constantly struggle against a system that discriminates based upon looks every single day.
that only happens in high school. after that, beauty from the inside counts big time. yes pretty face could give u advantage, but that doesnt always last for a long time. being pretty dont always take u anywhere in life. i've met some pretty girls without character, they are only famous on the social media, and that wont always make u happy or success whatsoever. be pretty inside and outside (being pretty on the outside dont always mean pretty face. u could have average beauty but as long as u clean urself up, u're good to go), have character. thats what matters after u grow up. and what job are u talking about? entertainment, sales and model industry? yes, that kind of job requires u being pretty. but a lot of job prefer brain and skill than pretty face too.

I can't believe how many bad things people have to say about this video. This talk was heartfelt and emotional, and it was an acknowledgment that there is more to focus on in life than looks and wealth. So many models wouldn't even bother to do something like this or have the sense of self worth. She is a hero in my book.

She had some good points, mostly about her personal experience, but it makes me very sad that she feels she needs to "apologize/acknowledge" something she has no control over. She was born gorgeous, she shouldn't feel she has to apologize for or minimize it. Life isn't fair and everyone needs to accept that and move on.
If she acknowledges it as luck as she has done, she can convey to other people that theres no difference between her and the next person, it was just luck. Thats true equality
supaahflyy I disagree. Does a person who is born not looking like her have to give a speech to explain and justify it? No. So equality would be the opposite of what you're suggesting.
Its not about the justification. To change a problem or a way of thinking one must acknowledge it first. There always has to be one person at the start that acknowledges it or else it stays much the same. I dont believe she is trying to convey that every person needs to justify or make a speech about it but rather know that is exists and then go about trying to change that mindset we have to the point where beauty being overblown doesnt exist however thats a utopia an unlikely to happen
Ibnziyad Tariq Beauty could be hereditary but the genetic bases to a good health too - that we get to see if we potentiate it by taking good care of our organism but beauty just by itself *could lack a good hereditary "baggage" and that could be transmitted to the next generation (s) Beauty by itself it's a temporary characteristic . It takes a lot more to produce a strong surviving "equipment" and or a good human being. Which is our natural purpose in life. We could not survive if other humans don't take care of us and protect us and teaches us and love us and for that beauty is not necessary either.
@@adyarym agreed, thats why i said "thats how our biology sees it", but its just our biology, it was never meant to be correct, its just a tool DNA uses
Looks might not be everything but good looking people are generally treated better than ugly people in just about every situation.

I love this talk but I feel like they gave it the complete wrong title, because her whole point is how important looks are in our society
Irony
I think the title conveys the message well. When someone says that something "isn't everything", the implication is "although it's big, it's not everything". And she went on to say that society places too much importance on something that is actually very superficial. Moreover, good looks don't shield you from insecurities.
meanwhile it's told to you by a model and not a subhuman
As if like, "Looks aren't _everything._
It's the _only_ thing."
I think that's the idea they're trying to give away.
The title is not wrong, it's satire.
I don’t think most people in the comments understand the point she is trying to make. She’s not saying that looks don’t matter. She says that no matter how beautiful other people perceive you at the end of the day you can still be very insecure and unhappy with your looks.

Money isn’t everything
- Billionaires
Looks aren’t everything
- Model
there is a connection here
People like to think that if they were more beautiful, skinnier etc they would not be insecure, they would be happy and basically all their problems would go away.

***** And she is absolutely right. Self image comes from within. The best looks in the world aren't going to change that.

She said she still is insecure, probably more insecure than the average person
@@ItsRaitisLV I can understand being insecure but I don't know about being more insecure than the average person.

So damn right:((((
Just because that’s sth you don’t struggle with doesn’t mean that it isn’t a struggle for others
The problem is when you cannot go to the second door because you're Latino or dark-skinned... Those are things we must work on to change in modern societies. Less worse that how do you look physically is not the only component of the first door, but also, how are you dressed, how do you talk, how do you behave and even your body expressions.
Christy Ieong This topic is looks. Forcus on advantage by the difference.
Do you understand?

You don’t have to be beautiful to get people to “go to the second door.” You’re basically saying that you’ve never seen an unattractive person with friends before or you’ve never seen an unattractive person in a relationship before. It‘s about confidence and personality, which good looking people tend to have more of (for obvious reasons) and that’s why they’re more popular or have more people going after them.

I can tell just by that comment. That means you have bigger issues.
I can not even agree more.
That was actual perfection
It's like another educational outlet, so we gotta make sure they're not contributing anything potentially harmful. xx
Glory Knights "I do disagree with you on that, only because girls in these newer generations (due to the accessibility of social media and the presence of advertisements everywhere) are almost always surrounded by what society considers the ideal body type/beauty. You're wrong.
Yes, it's a little bit like they pointed it out on unREAL, a tv show aired by Lifetime, that depicts the production of a show like the bachelor or the bachelorette. They call the lead and the contestants meat puppets. This would also apply to models and the beauty industry ...

Looks aren't everything, there are other things that matter other than looks. It's unfair to disregard someone just because they are beautiful.

More : she's saying that the standards of beauty are socially and economically constructed. And that what we see is not the reality.
JohnTheBaptist
Yes thats also true. The western standard of physical beauty is rather narrow and geared strongly toward white people, and thats no coincidence.
how can you say she didn't deserved it? she is a model bc she took care of her physical appearance more and that's an effort. I don't like the way you put the sentence. looks is very subjective it's a matter of being self confident and content with oneself. modelling industry is more than look having what you say "genetic lottery"
saniyauzumaki
I didn't say she "didn't deserve it".

L CC That was not her point, you relly missed out.
Looks aren't everything. They're only 97% of everything.
I would comment and ask but r/woooosh
try 98
😹👌
I was going to say 99.9%, but I think you may have a great point at a lower 97%. So true in business or anything. Unfortunately, looks do make a difference.
@ldyson22 in reality, since you will have to experience wealth and poverty, health and illness, beauty and ugliness, being a woman and a man, being white and being black. The important thing is: how you behaved as poor, and how you behaved as rich. I think anyone can answer that question honestly.
I love how she is opening talking about her race and her body type benefited. I love that she is honest about it. She was talking about this in 2013 and still in 2021 we are struggling with these issues. Atleast she made people become aware of the inequality.
The comment I was looking for! I absolutely agree
Black men prefer having white women
Someone here is trying hard to find a reason why she is not considered beautiful. Maybe it's because you are not. Racism is not the issue. Inequality is not the issue. You are just not attractive, get over it.
@@itsavibefr Of course. THere is no racism and equality here at all. Not in the Western world at least.

Models : Looks doesn't matter.
Rich people : Money doesn't matters.
Toppers : Marks doesn't matters.
Me : Everything matters.
It's so true.
It's bcoz they don't know the value of those things as they already achieved it...

Let me steal his money
Facts, money isn’t everything. However, I must admit that I would rather prefer crying on a yatch than in canned tuna like public transport.
Tony Cole well yes , but being rich does give you access to the best medical tech . So Steve just got really unlucky .
LoserJ7 lol
That's why he and his wife are on a mission to give away half their wealth. If money was everything they'd hoard it, right?
You guys in the comment section are basically why she made this talk. Just because you were treated poorly because of how you look, you also believe that people should be treated based on their appearance too? She was brave okay? Doing this could cost her her only job but she did it anyway. And you keep on complaining. Just treat others the way you wanted to be treated, it'll pay off.
Amen.
You are right
Maybe for you.For me,I just got used,by both men and women
Then i feel sorry for those who treated you that way. Cause i've been there too, but that doesn't mean im gonna stop helping others or treating others poorly at all.
Bull... She is still gorgeous, that's what matters! She's a model, not politician... No risk here
she is so humble. talking about how beauty blessed she is but she never talked about how wise she is
''Looks don't matter, it's personality'' - good looking people.

I say the same thing and I look like a turd on a stick.
but what she is saying is that looks matter a lot in our society and that that sucks a lot.
There is a thing in psychology called the "Halo Effect", that means people who are better looking and more physically attractive, are generally perceived as more intelligent, more successful and happier people in their lives
HAAHHAHAAH EXPLAINS WHY IM SO DUMB AND STUPID AMD FREAKING UGLY 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
It's funny...always a beautiful girl or man who says beauty is not important. Same like those rich guys saying money isn't everything.

No. But you have to appreciate her candidness and honesty in spite of an industry largely shrouded in a mum's-the-word approach to results transparency.
or she reliezed like Anita Sarkesian that you make money off of being a SJW / Victim.
Joseph LeForte
I'm pretty sure I missed that part of the speech.
I think it was courageous of her. Lovely vulnerability about her. We all grow and change. She obviously did.
***** Its also his manner, read your comment and think about how that reflects in yourself. you sound a bit bitter, people react badly to negativity.
***** I am also - 'fairly good looking' i have my DP so i guess you can judge yourself. I also try to be mild mannered, and i believe fairly similar things happen to me as him . . . I think its just his observations, no need to judge him that way
+VivaToddVegas sounds like you were at their feet as well
***** Lots of 'manly men' have nice goaties too, but not all...

Everything!

Superficial.
I don't know how to explain it, like they don't change in a bad way, rather start treating you like a normal human being.
literally
You are extremely true
Most of my so called friends ignored me most of the time never even invited me to go with them anywhere i literally didnt talk in the company because they ignored me and this has been happening in every group i was...i dont know why though i was super friendly tried to talk about what they like but they just still didnt like me and always THEY would try to get rid of me...so friends don't always treat u good when u are attractive....Once i showed one painting to my friend and she said its gorgeous and the other girl said its ugly...it was literally very beautiful
Wow! Superb speech! I am genuinely impressed with and enlightened by Cameron's psychological and societal comprehension of her professional industry.

Thats literally her point. You're arguing about agreeing with her. People like you are the reason we can't enjoy nice things... smh
Haha ok so looks don't matter just as much as money doesn't matter but I rather be rich and unhappy over poor and unhappy.
Is it Yuri on your profile picture? xD nice

Interesting, refreshingly honest talk.
A great man once said,
“ Money isn’t everything however one should earn enough to say that bs “.
I was happiest when I made the least amount of money.
totally true man
Alfa romeos are ugly
bitter enough?

Looks unfortunately are everything... To get the job that you want, the boyfriend or girlfriend you want, even friends. Beauty counts... big time
Yep, that is the sad truth.
Su that statement couldn't be more wrong, look at the richest people and the most admired in the world. are they sexy? ur welcome
tom, I think Su is talking about most normal circumstances.
Amen. I couldn´t have explained it better myself
that only happens in high school. after that, beauty from the inside counts big time. yes pretty face could give u advantage, but that doesnt always last for a long time. being pretty dont always take u anywhere in life. i've met some pretty girls without character, they are only famous on the social media, and that wont always make u happy or success whatsoever. be pretty inside and outside (being pretty on the outside dont always mean pretty face. u could have average beauty but as long as u clean urself up, u're good to go), have character. thats what matters after u grow up.
and what job are u talking about? entertainment, sales and model industry? yes, that kind of job requires u being pretty. but a lot of job prefer brain and skill than pretty face too.
One of the most believable and genuine Ted talks that I have ever seen .

you missed the whole meaning of the message she transmits. I feel sorry for you
XD
She had some good points, mostly about her personal experience, but it makes me very sad that she feels she needs to "apologize/acknowledge" something she has no control over. She was born gorgeous, she shouldn't feel she has to apologize for or minimize it. Life isn't fair and everyone needs to accept that and move on.
Ellisif333 you’re probably ugly
If she acknowledges it as luck as she has done, she can convey to other people that theres no difference between her and the next person, it was just luck. Thats true equality
supaahflyy I disagree. Does a person who is born not looking like her have to give a speech to explain and justify it? No. So equality would be the opposite of what you're suggesting.
supaahflyy her talk now is essentially just her giving in to beauty shaming, which is a product of petty jealousy, and that's very sad.
These comments prove one thing. The vast majority of people can only see the surface level meaning of words and ideas.
Lol
And yet you picked the hotter guys over the good guys. Happens everytime

health is everything. Without it you're screwed and everything else is secondary. Even looks!
Beauty means health, thats how our biology sees it atleast.
