    2. Andante 07:15
    3. Menuetto & Trio 12:48
    4. Allegretto ma non troppo 17:06
"Before signing with EMI and recording all of Mozart String Quartets at least once and often twice, the Alban Berg Quartet recorded nearly half of them first for Teldec and many regard them still as their freshest and most vital performances... and all unfamiliar with their earlier performances and who simply treasure these quartets are strongly encouraged to give this set a listen."
    (Amazon Editorial Reviews)
"recorded between 1976 and 1979, yet sounding as fresh and vital as one could wish in these digitalised reissues... the consistency and excellence of this quartet is astonishing".
(Classical-Music.Com, The official website of BBC Music Magazine)
"The Teldec recordings were made by the Alban Berg in the latter half of the 1970's; the performances have not since been surpassed...The playing is thoroughly stylish and deeply musical" (The Penguin Guide To Compact Discs)

In my view a timeless recording. Unadorned, technically perfect (intonation!), yet utterly musical. I feel I can understand Mozart's musical ideas here.

This is fantastic. However, the interpretations of (the last movement especially) Quartetto Italiano sounds best to me. Sublime!

Fine indeed but I find nothing more satisfying than the Bartók Quartet on Hungaroton/Qualiton (SLPX 11400-02; Komlós, Devich, Németh & Botvay). Even this early Alban Berg on Teldec sounds measured (calculated, deliberate) compared to them.

Here’s the Bartók Quartet recording of K. 421 on Hungaroton. If you care to compare, be my guest and feel free to prefer any version you like.
