Soul Hackers 2: Atlus' New Persona-Lite Has Major Tech Issues

  • Atlus is celebrated for its Persona titles and Soul Hackers 2 follows in a similar vein - but the problem is that the unambitious technology and cut 'n' paste dungeons really let the game down. And as for the last-gen consoles? The outlook is bleak.

For anyone playing Soul Hackers 2: You can DRASTICALLY reduce the loading times by just going into the options and switching load screen hints to "Display (Button advance)". After that the loading times are nearly instant! I am surprised they didn't mention that in the video, because the game has a lot (!) of loading screens and all are 10 seconds long.

Physics being tied to framerate means they specifically went against how unity is designed. The whole engine is built around using a fixed timestep for physics and they managed to go outside of that. Even if your not using the fixed timestep they have delta time(time between frames) so you can avoid this problem. Unity also has interpolation for the purpose of ensuring that physics are not choppy even when the fixed timestep is low. This actually is kinda baffling because most of the time I had assumed that developers still did this because their in house engines were built that way but that literally is not the case. I just can't make sense of it.

If you go back through Atlus’ releases from 2019 onwards you can notice why they chose to use Unity as the game engine. They made the decision because Atlus is moving away from their clunky proprietary engines and adopting mainstream engines like Unity and UE.
Sadly though due to this game’s lack of manpower and budget they probably couldn’t get the engineers who worked on SMT 5 with UE4 experience to help with this project, so they went with Unity.
Unfortunately their only past experience of Unity was with the SMT 3 remaster, which was also a technical disaster.
So in the end, Atlus didn’t give the team the budget this team needed for the amount of firsts for the studio there was:
First time they got to use new rendering tech without dealing with the hardware limitations of the switch, first game on next-gen, first game since 2014 on Xbox, First new release launched on PC the same day as the console version in Japan and first new release built in Unity.

I don't think games like this that use NPR (Non Photorealistic Rendering) techniques need PBR materials for the environments, and in fact, I think that using them can create a disconnection between the characters and the rest of the scene and end up looking weird.
That being said it is clear that the environments here are not the star of the show and look very dated. Even these simple assets could look decent with good lighting and post processing, but as it's pointed out in the video, those are very basic too.
As someone how makes 3d environments, it pains me to see them be second class citizens, the dungeons could look pretty sick with some GI and more emissive surfaces, given the aesthetic of the game.

Unity can be good, but most of the issue is Unity. There's a reason most games made in Unity either run bad or have to be siimplified. It's a good engine to get work done. But clearly not great for optimization. Can it be? Obviously, but this showcases exactly what Atlus was talking about years ago with Persona. They would rather make a game and focus on 1 platform so they can make sure they create the best game possible. Porting later is a whole different thing. But for example, the PS4 and PS5 versions were clearly the only versions they optimized at all. If they cut the Xbox versions they'd have had more time to optimize it and it would have likely had the porting budget to add a bit more to the game. But at first I didn't understand why they didn't just use P5's engine because Royal 100% looks better as a PS4 title that was a rerelease of a PS3/4 title. And basically runs better. But it's Unity. Unity almost always uses more for less and I never really understood why. But it is what it is .
Guess this is what happens when atlus gives a smaller budget to a game. Game itself is really fun. Not no persona or anything levels of good. But it differentiates itself once you're actually playing quite a bit. Doesn't feel like persona surprisingly. Feels like its own thing which is great. Also surprised by the performance issues since I use PS5, Originally Graphics was no issues and now in performance I didn't even notice battle slowdowns because the alpha slowdowns in games is so common it looks like it's intentional at this point in gaming lol

Higher resolutions do help with the lack of aliasing, even though the actual AA option on PC appears to do very little.
