Tesla and other EV companies are starting to phase the internal combustion engine out of existence! The truth is we all love our fuel-burning engines, but as tech progresses it's becoming more accessible to tinker with electric motors. So is the electric motor the real future of hot rodding and tuning?
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

Be honest, would you ever consider doing an electric-swap build? I think an electric NA Miata would be pretty sick.

NO it wouldn't
I think they are part of the future..
"NA Miata" Didnt know you could turbo an electric 🤔🤷♂️
I will never give up the sound of a powerful motor, I love the supercharger whine and turbo spooling too much to give it up for an electric motor
Imagine an electric powered DeLorean, now that will be awesome
Anythign is better than a shitty renault motor.
Some guy has a recreation controlled by an RC remote, but it still has stock drivetrain...
There is one already. It was even driven by Matt Farah.
I'm pretty sure EV West in San Diego was working to convert one when the fully charged channel visited them in the Spring.
I know of at least two. DMC in Texas actually made one about 8 years ago and dentist converted his to electric. Both were DC, DMC used lithium, the dentists used PbA. I believe the latter is considering converting it to AC which would be a good move IMHO.
Electric motors with a manual transmission?! I'm sold.
Clell Biggs that’s what I was thinking. It’s also impossible to stall lol
I agree if more electric cars had a manual transmission I would definitely consider getting one
If you’re fine with sacrificing range, sure. Which is like, something people complain a lot about. The poor range.

I always reminded of RC cars in terms of electric vs. Nitro. Once the brushless' start coming out, everyone started doing electric conversions.
I finally found the perfect enemy for the PriuSRT8
Btw, Donut, please make a video about the PriuSRT8
They did...
Oh wait no it was Jay Leno xD
I'd actually had that thought a few years ago when I had a high-mileage Prius (have since sold it and went back to my VW Bug). Would be really fun to rip out the stock drivetrain and do a full-electric conversion, with truly insane power, thinking like that of a Tesla Model S P100D. But look 100% stock inside and outside, the only noticeable difference is that it's actually quieter than stock (that engine was actually sort of rough and noisy) ... until you put your foot down. Take this "bone stock" Prius to the drag strip and break some hearts. Ultimate sleeper.
If you would like to see one being converted, go to the electric classic car RUclips channel. They are a local business to me and do that kind of thing with totalled Tesla’s

I loved the "Premium Electrons Only" bit they did
But no CCS1 fast charging. With the range though, this is more of a weekend car just like it would be with a petrol engine.
Very interesting! Glad to have more options when thinking about a project build.
That instant torque and being able to charge/fill it up at home, is a big plus.
Petrol companies definitely hate that concept, due to the loss of revenue for them.
We started doing this to remote control cars/trucks about 15 or so years ago when brushless (AC) systems and lipo cells were entering the market but no decent electric kits/chassis, particularly in 1/8th scale, were available.
So many benefits to doing the conversion: instant power; quick acceleration; less mechanical components (no need for brakes/clutch/transmission/etc); clean and easy maintenance; and more importantly for me, quiet and no exhaust so can play anytime and anywhere, even indoors.
Speaking of power, one of my rigs has a brushless system rated at 120A and I power it with 6S lipos (25V fully charged), so that's 3kW of power or 4hp. That's plenty for an RC weighing about 12lbs. It may sound like it would be hard to control, but most ESC (e speed controller) are programmable so you basically have launch control and ABS (via the motor).
I would like to do this in real scale.
honestly I don't mind the idea of an electric motor with a manual transmission you can still shift
This, and if they can convert more classic cars to electric. I enjoy driving a manual, and I don't like the look of Tesla's. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind driving an EV.
I like the whining of the VW IDR race car, so I think an electric motor that makes noise with a manual gearbox would actually be great
If people stop complaining about the short range, sure. Because a transmission is going to eat away like 5 to 10 percent or so.
And it wouldn’t stall.

Electric RC cars have been around for a long time. It took such a long time to make their full size, high performance cousins.Batteries were the primary constraint.
Ans they still are. EV's would be even more awesome if they'd be lighter and charge faster or be cheaper to produce or more sustainable for the environment to create. Those are all because of batteries. The technology will take huge steps in the near future hopefully and then we'll see probably EV's getting mainstream
Batteries still are the biggest issue, not enough lithium on this planet to power all the vehicles. We haven't had a battery breakthrough in decades, every time someone thinks they have something it turns out to either be too expensive to mass produce or too volatile for everyday use. I converted nitro powered RC trucks to brushless electric years ago, but I don't see it being something popular for passenger vehicles for many years.
@@shonntl batteries by design need to degrade. They will always deteriorate. Ill stick to my nitro rc and turbo v8 thanks.

The guy that made the white zombie works at the same company as me. It's NWHS and we service crown forklifts. He literally took old Brushed Crown PE motors and put them in his car. At this point everything else is custom or conversion specific kits, lithium cells, custom charger.
With newer scrap trucks coming in, I'm sometimes tempted to take an AC motor out of a Crown FC or SC. The only problem is I'd need a new motor controller and build a lithium pack. The Crown controller does not like it when everything else is disconnected, and it's speed and power limited.
I think, that there cars need to stay with original engines. Why? You can have electric daily, but why electric weekend car? For me the engine is that part, that makes sport cars (not only sports) special :) That feeling behing steering wheel, that vibrations, sound. Its just awesome :)

Gerry E for 50 grand more, yes. Tesla’s are still ridiculously expensive for their performance.
A regular mustang ain’t no supercar unless it’s the Shelby GT500. But I do agree Tesla’s speed is comparable with some but not all supercar. A Hypercar in the other hand like Bugatti, Pagani, and koenigsegg can definitely outrun any Tesla at the moment .
I remember the first time 10 years ago seeing a brushless RC car do a standing backflip. And instantly knew this was the future of power.
My 2 cents:
1. I like the sound of internal combustion a lot!
2. I would rather have options for gas stations instead of what my electric company feels like charging for electricity (besides I don't have a Slushie machine in my garage...yet)
3. Pretty sure electric cars will be very fast, very soon and I don't care. I like the sound of a V8, see #1.
4. I would rather wrench on a regular vehicle than 400-600 watts and hundreds of amps (DC not AC, big difference). I have been shocked by 240 ~30amps AC, 3/10 would not recommend.
" I would rather have options for gas stations instead of what my electric company feels like charging for electricity". You know, whenever there is an EV video, it's a competition to see who can make the dumbest comment, typically based of the pathetic level of STEM education in American schools.
It cost less than a third on electricity over gas , regardless of what price you get for shitty ethanol-spiked gas. Instead, you'd rather be OPEC's bitch and bend over every fillup and send US soldiers to die to keep gas "cheap".
Do electricity rates shoot up every holiday weekend? Does a war in Dumfukistan cause electricity rates to shoot up overnight?
Two cents doesn't buy anything any more. I have no doubt you have been shocked by sticking your tongue in a 240V outlet.
@@truantray What is your point exactly? That I am dumb because I have a differing opinion than yours?
You still haven't addressed the issue of sound and I really don't mind buying gas for my V8 even if it isn't "cheap".
I will gladly acknowledge my shortcomings, the electric vehicle has it's advantages, it's disadvantages but how about you?
Do you think electricity costs are the same everywhere? How about if there is no other fuel competition, what incentive do they have to keep it "cheap"?
That "shitty ethanol-spiked gas" has made some very impressive and fast E-85 vehicles due to the higher resistance to pinging, at a lower price per gallon (albeit the fuel is expended faster).
My point is there are two sides to every story. There is no free lunch. You seem like a passionate person okleydokley, don't let that blind you. And what do you have to gain from insulting me about something I freely admit? Here is the rest of the story: at the end of a 13 1/2 hour manual labor job when I was ~15yo I accidentally put a staple from an all metal staple gun into a run of 240 that wasn't visible. It could have easily killed me, just as some mechanic could kill themselves on these extremely powerful and dangerous battery packs.
If you have any other concerns you know where to find me, please do some reflecting and just have a good day friend.
Usually when you tinker with an electric car, you can completely disconnect the batteries from the rest of the vehicle, so getting shocked isn’t a big risk. You can also wear gloves to electrically isolate your hands, to minimize the risk of shock even more.
As a 17yo jdm fan, this gives me hope. Maybe I'll get an electric swapped R32 someday

The future is in hybrid technology. Diesel engine up front and a petrol engine in the back.
nah fam
MAYBE diesel and electric since you can make diesel out of basically anything. But the idea is to phase out petrol....so...no.
@@aaronbrock4049 no the idea is to phase out fossil fuel in general o would say petrol and electric hybrid is the best setup
It is going to depend on upcoming battery technology, as if electron storage becomes significantly better, there is little use in carrying around dino juice (and the added weight) as your energy supply.
As is, the few consumer electric cars available are close enough to their gas counterparts. When they start to exceed, that is when electric will really take off.
@@quintessenceSL the problem is that physics wise a new element or power source has to be found and used to make these batteries exceed petrol cars. Petrol and diesel have a higher energy density than lithium ion batteries and any other battery for that matter hence why we are still using the good dino juice. Electric cars will only take off if governments force it which they are.

@IAmNotPeaceful batteries is the one thing I'd not put that much money on anyways.
I'd love to build an EV for recreational use, like a project car, but batteries are one of the most expensive things to figure out.
I'd probably build a tray and make the batteries as easy to upgrade as possible as they are the biggest problem in EV development and will most likely enhance so much in the near future that it's not just worth putting too much money on it.
As for a project car I'd want it to be light and agile and therefore it's okay if the battery packs are small. I don't need my project cars to drive across country anyways.

I don't care if the car can go 0 - 60 in like, 0.5 seconds. I have a 67 VW Beetle, with, I don't know, 38hp? He almost can't do 60mph, but I don't care. That air-cooled sound, the slowness, that always put a Smile on my face. EV's can be better than ICE's everytime. But no one of then will never make me smile more than my 67 Beetle. The sound, the smell of gás. Sorry but no, the people who like EV can do whatever they want, but ICE's are my passion, one of the last things that I trully love in this moment we're living. Why you should electrify classic cars? The great thing of clossic cars is that they are mechanical and not technical. You control the car, not the car drives you. Sure electric cars has great acceleration but why should you swap an classic car with such an technic? I mean you could do it, but why, why should you do it?
because emissions
@@Adrian_Nel because it doesn't cost CO2 to build an electric engine and batteries...
An electric classic car cannot drive itself unless you install autonomy. Also, people do it because they want to drive the car and not let it rot in a garage somewhere.
Would you rather just scrap the shells of all those cars with blown engines?
How quickly the trend catches on usually depends on how soon costs come down. Considering that most car projects are passion/hobby driven, they usually take a LONG TIME to complete and most certainly have a conservative budget. Part of the reason LS swaps are so common is because of how cheap and easy the engines are to come by. I'd imagine it might catch on a little quicker in areas where 1)gas is fairly spendy, and 2)emissions testing is mandated (pretty sure California ticks both of those boxes)
I'm happy you made this video. I've been wondering how to keep classic cars if electric becomes the future.
