    Thank you sir! I got a 50 year old house. My garage door and my two bathrooms upstairs were without power. The breaker seemed to be ok, it did not jump. But I replaced it anyway just to get that out of the way. Still no power.
    I watched your video and to make the story short, I found a faulty outlet in my Down stairs bathroom ( which had the lights working and was not connected to that breaker).
    When I opened to outlet it was very rusty, probably from the sink’s humidity. Your video told me to check the outlets, the trick was to find out which outlet was feeding which.
    I replaced the bad outlet and bingo!
    I would have never thought that an outlet could control my entire garage and my two full bathrooms upstairs!
    Thanks again! You saved me a bunch of money from calling a professional.

    I just had this same exact issue occur this week at my gf’s condo and was feeling pretty well stumped but once I watched your video I was convinced this was indeed her issue too, so I just skipped all the trouble shooting / tracing you did and jumped right to changing out all the outlets connected to the “problem” breaker starting at the one that seemed closest to where the issue began and turned the breaker on/off after swapping out each individual outlet until the “problem outlet” revealed itself by way of the lights coming back on to all the other outlets.
    Only had to swap out 2 outlets before the problem outlet revealed itself & the problem was solved, which made me look like a genius / hero to my gf :)
    You’re analysis was spot on and I should also note that the “problem” outlet that I found was actually a newer outlet that was installed maybe 3 years ago tops, while some other outlets in her condo (on that same breaker (and are the ones I suspected were the cause) are over 35 years old, as they’re the originals from when the place was built in the mid 80’s.
    I loved this video because it comes off as if your uncle or grandfather just randomly texted you a video of a problem he had at his home and is proudly showing you how he slowly and methodically resolved it, step by step.

    Joe, The reason that the dining room receptacle went first is because it is the first device on the circuit and caries all of the load from all those 4 receptacles. So, it builds up the most heat. I would strongly suggest that you get another circuit run and receptacle for the microwave. It is suggested by the microwave manufacturers that you have a dedicated circuit for it. Best wishes, Kevin

    Very thorough explanation in diagnosing the cause of the problem. Whenever there’s 2 sets of wires (4 wires total - excluding the the grounds) coming in to a box, it’s preferable to pigtail them together, thus preventing other receptacles downstream from tripping or malfunctioning. Another suggestion is to install a GFCI in the your dinning room that will also protect your downstream outlets in your kitchen.
    Pigtails: I do acknowledge this is not always possible in older homes where smaller metal electrical boxes was the norm back in the day, because there isn’t enough space in these older boxes to accommodate wire nuts or wago’s. Again , very good video and thank you for sharing.

    As an electrician, I recommend not using those push-in connectors on the backs of receptacles, especially for 20 amp circuits with heavy appliance usage. Wrapping the wires on the screws is the best connection and less likely to fail over time.

      @JOEZEP54  Год назад +2

      @@diinpai Do you have a a fuse box & a breaker box? I did see this set up many years ago or did you just mix the terms up? It may be a tripped breaker, blown fuse or a break in the circuit. The non working socket may be powered from another line.
      Stay safe, Joe Z

    • @tms2568
      @tms2568 Год назад +6

      @@diinpai If you are sure that everything else in the house is working, including all receptacles, then it is likely a loose connection or splice somewhere in the circuit. Just as an FYI, it very, very rarely a problem with wiring in the walls. It is usually a connection in another outlet somewhere on the circuit (receptacle, switch, ceiling light, or other junction location). Try the closest receptacle or switch nearby as a starting point and go from there. Turn the breaker off and unscrew the device from the outlet box and look for any loose connections or loose splices. Pull on each individual wire a bit because a loose connection is not always obvious by just looking. One thing to note is that if there is more than one cable coming into the box (meaning a feed in and a feed out continuing the circuit) at the non-working receptacle then it is likely that other things on the circuit would also not be working. If it is the end of the circuit, and there is only one cable coming into the box, then that is an indication that the problem is at the outlet location that is just before it in the circuit.

    OMG... you converted a depressing start to the day into a cause for celebration !!! String of decorative lights fell into the swimming pool causing the outside receptacle to go completeely dead... with no circuit breaker tripped... I was puzzled and completely bummed out. After watching 4 mins of your video it prompted me to search the house only to find that a GFCI switch had tripped in an upstairs bathroom... resetting it solved my outside receptacle problem. THANK YOU so much !!!

    I came here cause I was having a dead outlet too, but my issue wasnt this. I cycled thru my whole circuit breaker box and that fixed my issue. But I just wanted to comment and drop a like to thank you. I was about to call an electrician... I work on computers but I have no sense of troubleshooting these type of issues and your video was very explanatory AND gave me ideas on how to resolve my issue. Again, thank you so much.. even though these may not resolve all the issues people experience within this category, it provides good knowledge base to troubleshoot and get straight to the root cause.

    Very thankful for this video! I am the maintenance man for the complex I live in, and I'm not an electrician. Have been dealing with the very similar situation, where half of the house didn't have power throughout. Fixed all but three, that were in one room; as the other half of the room had power. So I'm thinking the GFCI outlet in the hallway bathroom is the one powering those last three outlets. Thanks again for taking time to make this video.

Power at breaker is fine. Power at outlets and lights was low... now none, but breaker is not tripping.🤔 Hopefully, it is as simple as it was for you. Running through the same issue now in the kitchen. Our microwave/stove is on its own circuit. There’s a few outlets that went out. The breaker box is good. I replaced the gfci but still no power. Gonna run to Home Depot and purchase some outlets in preparation to do the same. I’m crossing my fingers that I have the same issue as the outlets seem ok from the outside. Thanks for posting this video and great explanation as talking us through the problem, testing, and solution to get the results you desired.

    Last night my power went out in our master bath. After checking breakers and trying to test everything I could think of I was at the end of my rope and had concluded I was going to have to call an electrician. I went to bed and before I went to sleep I decided to Google the issue one more time and this was the first video that came up. A trip to Harbor Frieght to get $50 in tools this morning and about an hour of investigating and I found the culprit. It was a bad connection coming off the light switch in the hall bath. Just as in this video the wire was in a push in that was worn out. Replaced the switch with a spare I had at home and everything came back on. This video probably saved me hundreds of dollars

    As soon as I heard you say how your elechicken friend asked if you had any GFCI outlets, I knew that was my issue. I left my miter saw outside last night, and it rained. I traced it back to the outlets, tried all of the breakers and nothing. One of the outlets in my shop DOES have GFCI, though. I reset it and Boom! Up and running. Thanks!

      @@JOEZEP54 So we use type C and F outlets here and I'm sorry, but I don't know if the wiring is different for those or not. My problem is actually with just one outlet and I haven't checked it before I commented, but the problem is just that one of the two wires broke off of the outlet, bc it was already hanging out of the wall when I started using it. I might be able to reinsert it and use it again.
      I always search everything in English, bc most of the time it's much more helpful, so this was kind of a reflex search. 😅
      Thanks and you stay safe too!

      @JOEZEP54  Год назад +1

      Thank you for getting back to me. I am not an electrician bur very curious how different systems work. From what I was able to find out it looks like type C and F outlets are wired the same as here in the States. From what you described it sounds like you should be able to reinsert the wires. I would trim them back a bit to get a fresh wire connection.

    This video really helped me. The only thing I did differently was that I didn't purchase the cable tracker, I purchased 5 new outlets and then just made what I thought were educated guesses, when I changed the fourth outlet that solved the problem. Honestly I was quite surprised it actually worked.
