You should bring on Rabi Maharaj. He’s a former Yogi from Varanasi, India who converted to Christianity. He later authored the book “Death of a guru” which is a must read especially if you’re into new age spirituality. There’s no one who can talk more authoritatively about Yoga/Christianity than him.

This was a much more helpful discussion on this topic than other Christian discussions I've listened to. Appreciated the delineations of various kinds of yoga and their potential impacts and avoiding lumping everything together as totally demonic and leaving no room for a purely physical, therapeutic practice. Great points raised about public practice vs private with respect to 1 Cor 8.

I loved, loved yoga and believed I could do it only as exercise, based on what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 8. But last year I was praying a lot about it and kept doubting my own beliefs. Then one night, after doing lots of yoga to calm down my 2020 fears, I went to bed and had the scariest sleep paralysis experience - half awake, my eyes half open, I could see a purple light on my wall and feel a weight on my hip while I couldn't move. I couldn't say anything, but in my mind said the name of Jesus, and it all disappeared. It was the last time ever I did yoga. Even if someone convinced me otherwise, I would be too traumatised. Pilates for me. I don't need all that stuff. Jesus is my joy.

On mindful meditation, or emptying the mind… why do you do that without a Prayer??
What do you think happens when you open or empty the mind without any protection?? Protection being a Prayer.
Would you leave your door open ?? No you wouldn’t.. why would you open the door of your mind without a Prayer?? Those who tell you or teach to do that some of them know the why, but they don’t tell you .. even if you ask, they will give you a very deceptive answer that appeases your ego. But think a very good Prayer or contemplation type of Prayer actually give a very safe and powerful connection to The Most High.. please contemplate on this verse below

Not working out, staying flexible, controlling irrational thoughts and emotions, dealing with our emotional baggage so it doesn’t hurt others is OUR responsibility, not Gods. Jesus broke preconceptions and so should we. As long as you’re in “the loving” you’re doing it right - whether it be yoga or making dinner.

You do not need to transcend the world so you can be in the presence of God.
Is there anywhere that you can be where God is not? If so, it would be an indication that God is very much limited.
The entire world is the body of Christ. The spirit of God is very much within us, which we have a tendency to forget, since we tend to think of God as somewhere out there, or up there in heaven.
Saying “namaste” actually might be a good practice to remind us of this, since it is not worshiping the other person as God, but actually means: the spirit of God within me honours the spirit of God within you.
It is simply acknowledging the divine spark in every person. We might even treat others with more kindness in the process.
As for vain repetitions of prayers, most of our prayers are some version of asking God to do something, fix something, or bring us some form of good fortune.
We talk to God, and we usually ask for things; they may even be good things, but we don’t listen.
If all you have is the repetitive chatter in your mind, you really don’t leave any room for God to get a word in at all. It’s very much a one way conversation, in which God has to listen to someone who is like a radio without an off button.
This is why Jesus said: be still and know that I am God. It’s a way to discover our off button. We can’t even come close to knowing God if we are incessant chatterboxes.
Unfortunately Christianity has become far too word centred, offering study of the scriptures, listening to sermons, and verbal prayers. It has basically become a belief system that is all about words, and is concerned more with doctrine than with spiritual practice and actual transformation, which is why people have flocked to Eastern traditions.
Thankfully, Christian meditation, which was part of the early tradition, has been revived. Also known as centring prayer, it employs a method to still the mind, so that the heart can be opened to the silent presence of Christ. It is the only way out of the limitations of words and the rational mind.
Silence was an essential part of the message and practice of Jesus, which we have largely not understood.
For an excellent and very informative book on silence in the history of Christianity, I would highly recommend Diarmaid MacCulloch’s: Silence, A Christian History.

    • @normaodenthal8009
      @normaodenthal8009 2 года назад +4

      @@carissamitchell8071
It’s not a question of whether one reads the Bible, but how one reads it.
A literal reading of the Bible without the requisite background knowledge of theology and the history of Christianity, is going to render a multitude of misguided interpretations.
There are many deeper layers of meaning below the surface of the text that are not revealed by just reading without both reflection and contemplation. This process is known as lectio divina.
To suggest that God can be known only by reading the Bible, confines God to both the Bible and our limited understanding of our reading of these scriptures. It is also in danger of becoming idolatrous by worshiping the Bible instead of God.
To put it more plainly, no matter how long and intensely you read and study the menu, you will not know the taste of food until you actually eat.

Although I'm slowly returning to a faith in Christianity, this discussion bothered me somewhat. Let's say I take a yoga class because I want to improve my core strength and flexibility to improve my golf game and I try to use mindfulness meditation as a means to help develop focus and concentration in work situations or deal with depression or anxiety, then someone comes along and tells me "that's of the devil!!!" It's this kind of dogmatic, puritanical and superstitious attitude that partly led me reject Christianity in my younger days. How far does it go? Does the same hold for reading Harry Potter books, playing Dungeons & Dragons, or watching the movie Ghostbusters? It's this kind of dogmatism that led to things like the Satanic ritual abuse moral panics in the 80s or worse. It's the same vibe I get from the woke movement that rails against various forms of literature and art, condemning it as either "white supremacy" or "cultural appropriation". I would suggest that if Christians start becoming like the Church Lady in SNL, they're probably going to create more atheists than convert them.

    • @juliemauger6183

I've just watched this video, and these White Western Christians refer numerous times to the subjects they're addressing, which you mentioned, "as practiced in the West " They're not speaking as experts about these practices and beliefs from an Eastern perspective, they do make that clear.
It is an undeniable fact that in the 60s and 70s, Eastern religions became very popular amongst young hippies. Many travelled to live and study in ashrams; the Beatles bought Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to the West where he taught Transcendental Meditation. Baghdad Shree Rajneesh came to live in the West & founded a community similar to an ashram.
But because Eastern spirituality was imported from one culture to another very different culture, it became a kind of hybrid form: it has continued to prosper in the West but it should definately be understood that Eastern philosophies & beliefs AS PRACTICED IN THE WEST are different to how they are practices in the East.

Why would you speak to Hindu's about whether Christians should practice Yoga? This issue is what is permissible under Christianity, why would a Hindu be a voice on that issue? Maybe they should have found an Indian Christian former Hindu on the subject, but to be honest, such an individual would probably take a more extreme anti-Yoga position given their history (speaking as an Indian Christian).

    • @kalebmoore2945

@@st89 That's a great question. You should include Hindus in discussions about Yoga for the simple fact that it is an integral part of Hinduism. However, there were many instances in which the host--which I quite enjoy--as well as the two guest speakers represented views and opinions that they don't hold and/or have never held. They spoke about those views and represented them when someone else could have been better suited for it (whether that person was a Indian ex-Hindu Christian or simply a Hindu). There was a study published on this (don't remember who wrote it) that looked into the negative consequences of yoga and it turns out there there are quite a lot of them and are intense (the ones who were under study were professional practitioners, not noobs).

@Miles Doyle You are certainly energized by the Pneuma Hagion! I'll just editorialize that residents of North America have no other cultural grounding of significant mass and volume other than Christianity. Without Christian acculturation, Americans are little more than haters and charlatans sprinkled with a few naïve utopians and infantilized escapists. Now, with our inheriting thousands of protestant denominations and the hubristic globalist ambitions of British imperial geopolitics, some (many?) American Christians are sadly haters with Christian acculturation, but ecumenical endeavors and interreligious outreach are alive and well across most of the larger denominations and many of the smaller ones. Apart from my intolerance of obnoxious whiners raised on TV and TV dinners, I'm motivated by two historical observations that dominate much of my frontal cortex for the last few years. First, Christian monks spread literacy to illiterate geographies and classes within geographies, created new literacies such as for musical notation, and most importantly, copied all those manuscripts over centuries by hand. We digerati can't give out enough well deserved gold medals for those centuries of patient labors. Second, religious institutions quite clearly outlast everything we know as laws, dynasties, kingdoms, currencies and states. Until the 20th C, those institutions ran nearly everything we today call schools and hospitals. I suppose we can forgive ahistorical colonial North American gearheads and food addicts for not internalizing and foregrounding that obvious truth, but history likely won't forgive them for long. For now, I will argue that finer points of apologetics, soteriology, theology and (my favorites) even hermeneutics and philology should take a back seat to reach and relevance. For now, America's university faculty have cloistered themselves within pay walls and focus most of their time on grant seeking or mischief making. Nobody but Christians (alongside Buddhists and Muslims) have any literate interests in gathering sheep wandering far afield of the flocks. Peace be with you.

  • @Amanda-nm3hg

There is an abundance of scripture that clearly tells you what God thinks of any man made tradion or ritual. If it didn't come from Him, then it's pagan. You are not to mix the traditions or rituals created by men with anything that is God's. I think tolerance has been confused with exceptence. We are to hate the sin not the sinner. That doesn't mean we go out and say what you are doing is okay, in fact I will do it with you. That's exceptence, that's saying I condone what you are doing even though it's wrong. Tolerance is living in a fallen world and saying, what you are doing is wrong, and I can not pollute myself by doing it, but I love you and when you're ready to repent I'm here. It's like the story of the prodigal son. The father didn't go after him and join him in his sin, he waited for his sun to return and welcomed him back with open arms. If you are trying to rationalize anything pagan by saying, but we made it about God, then you are mixing God with Pagan and we all know what God says about lukewarm Christian on judgment day.
