To be factual, during the last season, Montgomery was married to director-producer William Asher. During that season “Montgomery fell in love with director Richard Michaels. Their resulting affair led to the end of both of their marriages, as well as the end of the series.” The ensuing friction and divorce contributed to the ending of the show. Tragic, but true and easily confirmed by a web search. Still, one of my favorite shows.

Barbara Eden was indeed a classy lady ! Her show let out at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami Beach in 1979 or 80 and she was going for the elevator so I ran and squeezed in at the last second and was standing right next to her. Packed in like sardines I asked her , " can I go back to your room with you"? To which she responded in that "Genie" voice we love so much, " oh no, I'm sorry, no, but I am flattered" ! I was only 17 or 18 and high as hell ! But it was a very CLASSY reaction by her. I'm sure she's had to turn down thousands. I've always wondered what the other people in the elevator thought ?

  • @eloiseockert9233

Dick York did NOT just have severe backpain. He had to let go of the role was because during a videotaping of an episode his problem was so intense he actually collapsed in front of the camera. As for Elizabeth Montgomery she had colon cancer and eventually crossed over as a result. Bewitched did NOT end while Dick York was on the show. Dick York did a very few acting jobs after becoming extremely ill. He was practically broke. He received a very small amount of money in his actor's retirement fund. It was NOT enough for him to take care of his family as he and his wife had 5 children to support The family ended up on welfare. I read Dick York owned a building, and had tenants living in the building. Unfortunately, none of them was paying him rent, & as a result he lost the house after he became extremely ill.. He did become well enough to work, but not as a performer.. He and his wife obtained employment cleaning offices. They also collected recyclables. The family lost their home, moved into a building that somehow was connected to his wife. Unfortunately, I don't remember how, but the house was NOT in great condition but the family somehow managed. Unfortunately Dick York had emphysema and was a heavy smoker. He also was drinking a lot and taking pain killers to abstain from the pain, making his problem worse.

Thank you for that actual information. It's always heart-wrenching when someone we almost felt we knew, and that we saw every night in our lounge rooms, falls into such terribly hard times and poverty. God bless Dick York.
I was a middle manager, alternating with being a trained teacher, and I had a patchy but respectable career for 20 years or so before my life fell apart with personal issues and mental health issues, a failed business, losing my life savings and the respect of my friends and family, and a ruined marriage. The last half of my life has been a mixture of doing cleaning work in empty buildings at odd hours, and stints on welfare. Sometimes months have gone by and I can't afford a haircut. Things are slowly improving; but the point of saying this is that I can really relate to how Dick York must have felt going from America's favorite husband to cleaning toilets at 6 a.m.

"Bewitched" was taken off the air in 1972 primarily due to the lead actor Elizabeth Montgomery's desire to pursue other projects. Montgomery, who played the main character Samantha Stephens, wanted to move on from the show, and her marriage to the show’s director, William Asher, was also falling apart, making another season virtually impossible. While there were rumors and theories about the show's cancellation, including the idea that it was because of low ratings or that the show was "cursed" due to the untimely deaths of several cast members, these were not the main reasons for the show's end. The series had a successful run for eight seasons, and Montgomery owned 20% of "Bewitched," earning royalties from the show for the remainder of her life. However, by the end of the 1970-1971 season, the ratings for "Bewitched" had noticeably dropped, and the show did not rank in the list of the top thirty programs, which may have also contributed to its cancellation.

Welles left after the first year, but Moorehead stayed on for another year. She’s also in several scenes of Citizen Kane. They remained close until Agnes died, with Welles following shortly behind. As if that weren’t enough, she was also the central character in a Twilight Zone episode with no dialogue. There was no dialogue in the episode until the final seconds, and it didn’t come from her. Didn't mention that Agnes Moorehead also died of cancer. However I think she got hers from working on "The Conqueror" about Gengis Khan. That movie made in late 1950's starred John Wayne, Susan Hayward, and of course Agnes was in it too. They filmed in New Mexico dessert area to look like Mongolia, as sand color and terrain is very similar. Unfortunately for these actors and stage crew members, is this fact... They were pretty much in barren Atom bomb, nuclear testing area. Yup, all the 1940's and 1950's radiation from all these tests was right around them! Plus they were on this "set" for many months filming, while staying in trailers, tents, etc.
Many actors and hands stated it was very windy some days and there was dust all over. Was radioactive particles they breathed in for some time, and were all quite exposed for staying such a long time of months. I also wonder where they were getting all their water from, too?! My point... Wayne, Hayward, Moorehead, and like 90% of all the actors, crew and stage hands all eventually died of various kinds of cancer. Great, rarely seen movie, but in a way it's too bad Howard Hughes even made this film. So many people got ill and died from making this movie! So sad! Rarely know fact... Susan Hayward died of a cancerous brain tumor, and her last movie she made was about a woman with a brain tumor and was titled "I want to Live". Again, so sad. A great actress who was beautiful, talented and I truly like watching her old films.

He was 5 mi from ground zero. He died from an accidental death at age 50. So we don't know if he would have gotten cancer. I used to joke that I glow in the dark. Which I attributed to my dad having been at 5 miles from ground zero prior to my birth. No fallout from it yet, in the family visible. But that's a lot different than being on site working long days shooting a film after the pollution is everywhere. I'm sure that is what made everybody sick.

    • @marthawelch4289

They filmed "The Conqueror" in Nevada during the testing there, not in New Mexico.
The cancer situation specific to this movie has been researched and argued over many times over the years. There is evidence and conjecture on both sides:
      * YES the nuclear tests caused more cancer than usual, and
      * NO the cancer occurrence was no more than usual for a population of people who were heavy smokers and other now-known causes/contributors of cancer.
Also, the movie "I Want to Live" was a loose biography of Barbara Graham, a "party girl" who was convicted of the murder of an elderly woman during a robbery, sentenced to death, and then executed in the California electric chair.
