A neighbor and her daughter asked me to teach them to quilt. They were previously "non-sewers". It was fun teaching them from scratch - from the parts of the sewing machine to how to make a small wall hanging. It got me going working on three of my projects. I finished piecing one project and have basted all three so when I have 15-30 minutes (or more) I sit down and sew. It may mean quilting just a strip or two at a time, but I've almost finished one that way so far. Sharing your skill with someone else can get those juices going too. It did for me. Love your Fireside Chats and the ideas you pass along. I'm in my 70's and still learning. Thanks again.
We all go through slumps, mine is usually along with hot weather, so I take a vacation. I concentrate on something else for a 2 week period and then see if the interest is back. I also use this time to get my machine worked on, so it is an enforced break. If my interest in sewing is there, but it is a particular project, I HAVE to finish it before I buy more material, THAT usually motivates me the best.
Yes I’d make the Granny Square scrappy! I’ve been cutting up all my scraps into 2 1/2 “ squares for some Irish Chain quilts which really makes great use of all my left over fabric. They are already fabrics I love.
Yes to 2.5 in granny square QAL! I couldn't find a giveaway link at your fireside chat webpage? Was looking for a full pic of your bonnie lane quilt with the car too. Anyway, I was losing my sewjo late spring because I have too many things started! I bought a whiteboard and listed 5 things to focus on only.... it's really helped motivate me and fight the feeling of overwhelm. When I go in my sewing room I know what I'm working on and it brings me joy!
Hello and yes to the Granny Squares! I have only put one project under the bed as I was trying to join QSYG rows and didn’t have success. They will be a long date with Jack to straight the one out. My Mo Jo has been pretty consistent as I learn something every time I sew. The process is relaxing and truthful! I also cross stitch at a slow rate! You have taught me a Bunch and Thank You!
I lost my sewjo when my dog who was in my quilting studio with me all the time was killed. I could not sew or go in studio for about a year. I have my current two rescue pups trained now to sew with me. They are great supervisors who remind me to take breaks and have treats!
really enjoy your fireside chats but rarely get to see them live. I have SO many 2.5" squares, would love to see a video on the granny square block. Thanks for sharing.
Traffic Jam is a perfect wall hanging size! I love the large quilts, but I would never finish it! So, now I do smaller projects, table runners, table toppers.
Hello Pat; You are a very amazing lady and I love your videos. I tried to find the link to for the giveaway but I could not get it to come up. So I am typing my answer to your question here as I really have a have a hard time going from link to link to find the one I need as I am not computer savvy and at y age I don't think I will ever be tech savvy. MY answer is for some reason I always seem to either quilt a whole lot of small projects or a lot of big projects at a time and I have found out I do much better when I mix them up do a few small projects for awhile then go do a couple of large projects. I realized I was getting bored doing the same thing for long periods of time and when I lose my MOJO I then just to sit down and play on my sewing machine and see how I can change some of the patterns I use in my quilting or see what I can make with my scrapes with np pattern in mind so I do not have to think so hard and follow a pattern.
Hi Miss Pat! Love your quilts. The blue car wow. Awesome! If I lose interest in something or hit a road block with I put it in time out for awhile lol. Usually will start something new or just destash/clean my area up for a fresh new start. Eventually will go back to it and rework it or muddle through to get it done. Have a great sewing week!!!
Hey Pat love the 2 1/2" use of scraps, I have a head start on that project. Well I don't know if I lost my Sewjo, but I live in Texas and its been 100+ degrees. In December I made a deal with myself that was gona finish my house UFO'S. (I don't really enjoy winter) so I had some projects to complete which I have all except for tearing down 1/2 a wall in the bathroom. So I have completed all my house projects. I am a Master Gardener and I can tell you, Its too dangerous to be anywhere outside unless its after 8:00 PM. so I made a plan start with my UFO's in my sewing room, so I have finished most of them but like you, I start other projects so here goes the vicious circle. Thank you all the great videos you share with all of us quilters.
I didn't have a snack, but I made 2 sm bags yesterday afternoon. Weather: it felt like winter went from Feb-April, so I was so excited for spring to finally get here & now yesterday was almost 100*.
Only just found your channel. Where can I find those adorable pumpkin block patterns? Delighted to have stumbled on your videos..Will binge from beginning very soon.
If I’m dragging my feet on a project or just fed up with it, I put it away, I’d hate to force a finish 🤔 plus I have multiple projects squirreled away that I can swap out and if my sewjo runs a little dry, I’ll pick up my knitting needles or crochet hook to cleanse the pallet 😜 as it were 👍 or do a quick and easy sewing project so I can have a finish - mug rug, grocery bag etc.,
It’s a KNOWN FACT that the PERCEPTION of Time passing SPEEDS UP the older a person gets!! 😳🙄😲😱🤯 Remember 🤔💭 when you were a little kid, it seemed like time dragged, & it took FOREVER to get from one Christmas to the next Christmas? But the older you get, the faster it SEEMS time flies between Christmases, till it it’s moving past you like a fast-moving-bullet-train! Well, to a 2-year-old, Christmases take HALF of their ENTIRE lifetime to get to it!! To a 10-year old, it’s a TENTH of their entire lifetime between Christmases!! To an 80-year old, it’s 1/80th of a lifetime, so it APPEARS that time speeds UP the older that you get!! (Think 🤔💭 on THAT thought for a little while. 🙄😉 But not too long!! Time is STILL flying!!) 😳🙄😲🤭😱😱😱😱🤯 “Tempus fuget!” 😲😱🕐🕑🕒🕓🕔🕕🕖🕗🕘🕙🕚🕛🕜🕝🕞🕟🕠🕡🕢🕣🕤🕥🕦🕧
Hi Pat, when I have lost my mojo, I take a class to teach me a new skill. I meet people with different skills and share with them. Also getting new fabric helps.
I switch back and forth between handwork and machine work and this seems to keep me on track. I work long hours ,so i savor my sewing time and I let my mood dictate what I work on.
Just got your Bonny lane fabric love it! Love the bins, really help me organize my projects! You are helping me start quilting and I never thought I’d even try! You make it fun!
Granny squares! Yay! I just started one-i have 2 squares done. Was going to try to do it as leaders and enders, but I think that may be more trouble than it's worth. Will maybe try to do one every week or two. I'm using 2"pieces (my 2"box was running over) and doing 6 rounds
Burnout does happen. My solution is to put up the current project and try starting a new quilt. If that does not work, knitting has also become an addiction for me. Switching between the two generally works.
First let me say that I love these fireside chat videos. Do you know when the bonnie lane layer cakes and charm squares will be available from Fat Quarter Shop. I have my name on the wait list but the site says they will be available in July. I guess that didn't happen. Bonnie Lane fabric is wonderful. It makes me feel happy. Thanks for all you do.
I really had a light bulb moment while you were giving suggestions for project management. I recall hearing that if you have a task allotted to 15 mins, you will get it done in 15 mins. However if you have 2 hours allotted for the same task it will take you 2 hours! I’m in the process of cleaning, sorting and purging my sewing loft. I’m going to set a timer for a task and see if it helps move me along. I would love to hear more about this from you, who are able to get so much done in a week😊. Thanks ,Pat. Great chat tonight!
Can you give us some more details for those of us who have many, many projects that are all over the place in my sewing room. I love the bins or holders. How do you start getting all your projects "together" . I feel overwhelmed with all my projects...almost to the place I am paralyzed. I want to quilt but when I see all the piles I don't know where to start. Thanks.
This is what I do. I put EVERYThiNG out into another room. Sort it.. MUST keep.. think i want to keep, do not want to keep. Priortize, Organize if it''s a mess in the bin, or put IN a bin. Be sure your area is totally cleared out before putting it back and ONLY put back what you want to work on. And keep high priority where it is easy to access. I do this 1 to 4 times a year
I am going to use your idea to put my projects in separate bins. I plan to put a label on the outside so I will know what's inside and have all the necessary materials, notions, pattern, etc. and projected finish date. Having them tucked away isn't working- out of sight out of mind. Making a list of my UFO's may encourage me to work on them and get them finished. If I find a project that I have changed my mind about finishing, I will give the orphan blocks away to someone to would like to have them. Joining a quilting circle or guild may help get your mojo back and make some new friends. I plan to find a quilting group that meets during the day. My current guild meets at night and due to night vision problems that no longer works for me.
I had a couple questions. One. What size are the half-square triangles made from different size beginning squares? A 10-inch block can make what size half triangles? Two. Years ago, my grandmother used a protective and decorative piece that went over the top of the quilt to keep it from wearing out. It was like a dresser scarf folding in the center. I believe it was pinned onto the quilt, or basted on. Are you familiar with this? What is it called? Thank you!
When I lose My mojo.. I iron fabric or organize my fabric. Just touching it makes me smile
Me too

Looking good Pat.
That car is really kewl. Looks kinda like an old Chevy or Oldsmobile!
I love it!
Yes Re: the Granny Sqs! I have a ton of scraps that are just sitting there and need to be in another quilt.
Traffic Jam is a perfect wall hanging size! I love the large quilts, but I would never finish it! So, now I do smaller projects, table runners, table toppers.
Yes to granny square blocks with 2.5” squares!
LOVE the car!
I like that idea about the scraps. Thank you.

Yes!
Love your videos. Yellow from Michigan.

What great plans!
It helps to do a small project and finish it to get that feeling of accomplishment, or change to a different craft for a little while...
Class C 25 ft r is small. We are planning to do the same but in a 29 ft rv which is small for 2 people to live in with my quilting supplies, lol.
when I loose my mojo. I joined a guild these ladies are so amazing.
I didn't have a snack, but I made 2 sm bags yesterday afternoon. Weather: it felt like winter went from Feb-April, so I was so excited for spring to finally get here & now yesterday was almost 100*.
I've been dying to do this block! Every time I see it, it makes me want to organize my scraps!
Only just found your channel. Where can I find those adorable pumpkin block patterns? Delighted to have stumbled on your videos..Will binge from beginning very soon.
the book is being reprinted, it will be in soon!
I get my mojo back by signing for a retreat or attending a quilt show - always inspirational and motivating!

so true!
Love all the quilts
I have a lot of squares that should work great in the granny design. Going to give it a try.
I love all your QALs! I haven't started the book SALs, but I will! I need more Halloween quilts.
Mars bars! I forgot about those. I loved them!
Hi Pat, when I have lost my mojo, I take a class to teach me a new skill. I meet people with different skills and share with them. Also getting new fabric helps.

Love your Bonnie Lane fabric! Sew excited! I just got my Babylock Jazz II! With school starting next week, I've been too busy to play with it!
How fun!

Great plan 👍

Hi I enjoy your fireside chat so much. On your blue project bins. Could you use a dry erase marker to label what is inside?
Hello from the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan 😊
You look really cute today! Hair frames your face nicely.
I found some pretty labels on Amazon that are erasable. I put these on my project containers so I know what's in them
Moon 🌙 Pie!!
I would love to do granny squares, with 2 1/2" squares - I have a "bad" habit of buying them with no project in mind.........lol
It goes in a project container to finish later, hopefully😜
rv recreational vehicle mobile home. so cool for the patterns.

Perfect 👍
Your plan will change your life
I like the Granny Square blocks on point. What about using the fusible grid technique? I did this on a pillow cover and it turned out great!
I want low maintenance
I'll send you a Mars Bar, Pat! They are my favourite!
Thank you!
As I was sewing yesterday, I forgot I had bread rising in the kitchen. Time mgmt: nope!
I had a couple questions. One. What size are the half-square triangles made from different size beginning squares? A 10-inch block can make what size half triangles? Two. I believe it was pinned onto the quilt, or basted on. Are you familiar with this? What is it called?
Thank you!
It was called a whisker scarf
I don't know the dresser scarf. Maybe ask at a museum. And I'm not sure what you are asking me about half square triangles
Take care of yourself first.
You have so many projects going. How much time do you spend on sewing each day/week?
not as much as you think. I have to sew fast and efficient. I spend most of my day on the computer.. like right now answering questions
Pat Sloana Well I love your videos and your fabrics.
I watch RUclips videos for inspiration. :)
thank you!
Why is the easiest, fastest way to sew a checkerboard washing?
Strip sets then subcut but you don't get the scrapping look
You probably have answered this question but do you starch before you cut? How much?
Sometimes, usually just small patchwork
I always starch, my cutting and piecing has been much more accurate. Maybe give it a go and see if there is difference for you.
Hello from Union Missouri
Love the blue fabrics!
