- First used in WW1 & called Harpswell as a training aerodrome, rebuilt as a bomber station it opened in Jan 1937 as RAF Hemswell with 144 Sqn & 61 Sqn, Polish sqn's 300 & 301 arrived July 1941 then 305 Sqn later, next 150 & 170 Sqns arrived in 1944 it was used until 1979 with various Sqns & finally closed in 1967 by the RAF.
Aircraft that used Hemswell as a base were varied including Audax biplanes, Blenheims, Hampdens, Wellingtons, Lancasters, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Mosquitos, Lincolns & Canberra's
Now one of the best antique centres in Europe. Wonder what happened to the planes?
