  • WEST LINDSEY PARISH #74: HEMSWELL CLIFF
Hemswell Cliff is one of the newest civil parishes in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire. Its situated on the A631 road between Caenby Corner roundabout and Gainsborough
It’s called Hemswell Cliff because it stands on the Lincoln Cliff escarpment, the same ridge of land which we’ve come across a few times before in places like Ingham
Hemswell Cliff is centred around the former RAF Hemswell, which was operational for 30 years between 1937 until its closure in 1967.
When it closed, the airfield site was subsequently redeveloped into a private trading estate and the RAF would turn its married quarters into a residential area. This became known as Hemswell Cliff.
By 2008 there was no longer an RAF presence here, and the only building they still owned was the community centre, which was sold in 2009 to an educational charity
Despite being completely civilian now, Hemswell Cliff still has a very RAF like feel to it. As you wander around, at points you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time
A lot of the buildings from the airbase still stand, including the control tower. Unlike other airbases we’ve come across, a lot of these have been repurposed
Come with me and lets check out what they’ve been turned into now

Ah we see enough of those. I reckon the RAF buildings are more what people are after in this one

@@TheVillageIdiot In that case may I point you to the old NAAFI shop (GPS 53.39755, -0.571196) and the two still vaguely camouflaged ex-Warrant Officers' married quarters (GPS 53.395527, -0.569343). I lived opposite those in the mid-1950s.

I have been told (not sure if true or not) that as Hemswell cliff was still owned by the M.O.D. and used as housing for
Serving personnel and their families it had to remain a secret that the dambusters actually took off from Hemswell but it was said to be raf Scampton because it was still being used and had armed guards at the time of making the film and now its just become the truth.

If you come out of the school gates and turn left there is/was an underground flooded bunker.
