I have a fiddle, mandolin, and dulcimer all handmade by my grandfather. He lived in Northeast Mississippi. It truly is a dying art.He made his own forms to bend the wood. Truky amazing to watch him work. He was in his seventies and nothing seemed to slow him down.
Thank you, Donnie, and Mr John for sharing such amazing talents of the people of Cades Cove and all the mountain people. Many thanks for keeping the art of carving alive and passing the talent down to future generations. God bless .
Good morning Donnie and John. Carving was an art. The picture of grandfather working on a link chain brought back memories of my grandfather. Out of a long piece of wood, when he was young, he made a convict with a ball and chain. I still have it. Love the dancing man. The shot guns are just beautiful. I think the people of Appalachia were incredibly talented, self reliant. If they wanted something, they made it themselves. Wish they passed their skills on. I want to hear more about Cades Cove, please.
Good morning, Mr. Donnie, I woke up this morning with the vision of a string of hair. I look at RUclips and this was the first video I saw, your precious beautiful video. Bless those folks. They knew the true meaning of life. Now every is fake, poison, and cheaply plasticly made. I sure miss how my mother use to make clothes and buttons for coats dresses. Thank you for making my morning special. God bless you, family, and freinds.
I watched, and helped my Grandpa build smoke houses, hog pens, and chicken coops out those same tools. They were so gifted. He had a moonshine still as well. Thanks for sharing this Mr Donnie and John.
Christmas for us was always full of homemade surprises! My grandmother used to make us knitted hats, gloves and booties but my granddaddy always carved us something. My most favorite gift from him was a carved jewelry box that I still have. Thank you Mr. Donnie for reminding me of the memories. God bless you!
Welcome Donnie from Maryville, TN, my life has been spent here. I still have my great-grandfather's old Barlow pocketknife. It's one of my prize possessions. I still love him and miss him terribly; he passed when I was 14, but I know I'll see him again, thanks to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I owe both he and my great grandmother for leading me to Christ. This episode brought back a lot of old memories, Thank You.
Oh Donnie! Thank you so very much for talking with John and seeing all the homemade items he & his grandfather whittled. I remember sometimes seeing my Daddy sit and whittle, but I think he just did it to help him think things out sometimes. I absolutely loved seeing these magnificent homemade items! I love the dancing man!! Blessings always! 🙏❤️😊
Goodmorning Donnie, from your friends here in North Georgia hills-me and moma Love your videos-our people here in the mountains made all kinds of things, wood carving goes way back, they made toys for kids,etc-so wonderful 😊GOD BLESS you so much for passing on these amazing talents and stories of our mountain ways-we Love all your videos-Lots of Love 💕 ✝️💕from doris(moma) and tiffany
Thank you Mr Donnie and Mr John for sharing. The quality and love put into each carving makes everyone of them priceless. God bless you and have a wonderful weekend
If being able to create, repair and save the things the Good Lord has given us is being stupid and backwards then I'm guilty. And I Praise God from whom all blessings flow for allowing me to be born and raised in the Great Smokies. Thank you, Donnie, for another great video and your hard work on bringing Appalachian history to the world is much appreciated. Blessings....
I think mountain people of the past were genius. Can't hardly find anyone now that can make such things as furniture, baskets, carvings, clothing, quilting, wool. Its just rare to see now days. They made everything from growing their own food to anything they needed. They didn't store shope for much besides sugar, meal or flour and maybe once a year buy shoes for the kids. Amazing people using their hands and brains for their intended purpose. Love the carvings, unique and priceless. What a beautiful talent passed down. Thank you Mr. Laws. God bless you all.
So love watching! My great uncle and his wife made furniture, bowls etc from Chestnut that they found in the mountains. Took a wheelbarrow and also carried out large pieces. I have 2 bread bowls they made. Brings back fond memories. Thank you and God bless ❤
I respect and admire those wonderful people back in the old days who had so much talent and the hardworking folks who did so much for then and today. Wish America was like it used to be.
I am 68 now and my Grandma made me doll furniture from cardboard boxes. Grandma would cut a Saltine cracker box a certain way, stuff it and sew fabric over it. She made chairs, sofas beds and tables. Can I buy some of his wood crafts? They are beautiful hand carved treasures. Thank you Donnie for filming this. I love your videos.
That's so awesome my friend. Thanks so much for sharing this. You can here and there, but they are hard to find and if you do they are expensive. Thanks so much for sharing this my friend. God bless you.
The mountain people were definitely gifted. Can you see people being able to do that now? It's sad really how things have changed. Everybody is too dependent on electronic gadgets, etc. Thank you Donnie and John for sharing. John you are so talented. God bless you both.
Another great one as always Mr. Donnie! When we watched this we immediately said we need to go back out there to Cades Cove. Kenneth’s grandma used to take a thread spool or a big button and run a string through it and he would play with it for hours, my how things have changed! Thanks so much for sharing, God Bless you and your family!
Hello Mr. Donnie thank you for sharing this video. I enjoy this stuff. I love going into the stores when I visit the Smokies and seeing all the hand crafted things even though it's not like it used to be today but I see a lot of beautiful things people have put time and effort into making. Mr. Donnie I hope you have a beautiful and blessed day and hope you stay cool cause it's about to get really hot.God bless ❤
Thank You so much for sharing John's story. I Love his carving of the dancing man. That would take a lot of skill and talent to make. Can't wait to hear more of his stories.
Donnie, this was great. I’m looking forward to seeing the series. My wife was born and raised in the blue ridge mountains of Virginia right next to the Peaks of otter ear, a chestnut log house, her granddaddy read everything his home is Barnes 10:21 smokehouse corn house he couldn’t read or write, but he was one of the smartest man I ever knew !!!!!❤😊
Good day Mr Donnie. His rifles look like mini works of art. Wow!! The dancing man dancing to Curt's music was fun. Its amazes me what humans can do. Thank you for the stories, I look forward to more. Happy weekend everyone!!
Such wonderfully gifted people, Donnie. I wish I had been able to learn from them. I remember my great grandfather whittling a team of mules and a wagon, when I was a child. I wish I knew what happened to it. God bless you, my friend.🙏❤️
A good friend of mine makes fiddles 🎻 as well, making ink pins & salt and pepper shakers, I went the other day picked up some watermelons and cantaloupe he had planted , He gave me an awesome compliment he Told me I made some of the best bacon 🥓 Then he told me he took some Bacon to a friend of his, he said that I had made and gave it to another old timer. He told my friend that was some of the best bacon he has ever had ,,, that coming from them meant a lot to me , Great Video Brother, you too Have amazing talent 👍
Really enjoyed this video! It's so nice that John is carrying on the tradition. Thank you Donnie for finding all these interesting people and topics. You have a wonderful gift also! May God bless you greatly.
Great intro to Summer time, Mr Donnie! That ol' whittled dancin' Man's got a Schrade or Old Timer or other fine pocket knife in His overalls..., no doubt. Used to was..., ever'Body had one. I remember I couldn' wait till I was 9 or ten year old, growed up enough to start carryin' a Boy Scout knife, and try my Own hand at wood carvin'. Now a days, I carry a 'Buck' 110 foldin' Hunter fer all 'round use. Yet, a couple of 'Flex-Cut' carving tools -- and the know-how to keep 'em razor-sharp on a leather strop -- are as handy as pockets for whittlin'. I wonder what Others keep close by when They're lookin' to add to the pile o' wood chips on the floor of the ol' front porch? 🙂 Rick Bonner Pennsyltuck
Good morning Donnie…. I pray you are doing well….Thank you & John for sharing the stories of the wonderful God given talents of our ancestors….I love this…..Take care God Bless & Lord willing I will see you next time 🙏🏻❤️
My goodness the craftsmanship on that shotgun and rifle! At first look and without the quarter you'd think they were the real thing. What a talent handed down by generation of his family. Looking forward to the next video of this series Donnie ❤
Good morning Donnie. What a very enjoyable video. Your friend and his father are truly skilled carvers for sure. You are so right, to say that this is a gift. The craftsmanship is so appealing to the eye. True works of art. It takes a really perceptive person with an eye for detail. It amazes me to see how they are able to create just as their mind pictures it. Thanks so much for sharing your very special friends. Your friend, Louise
Thank you for sharing the wonderful talent of the mountain people. Putting the quarter there so to see the size was such a good idea. What talent. What joy your channel is.
Thanks Donnie! Hey, I've been watching your channel talk videos and I think you need to stop worrying yourself over these nasty people. They are trolls and just trying to make trouble wherever they can. They're so insecure they just have to pick till they get a fight going. Just ignore them and move on. Keep making these great videos for us folks who appreciate it. We love these videos and we love you. God bless you too and thank you for another great story.
This is a great video and Thank you Donnie for sharing these traditions and stories. Very interesting to hear from John and see the craftings of him and his grandpa. Much appreciation to you Donnie and to everyone you talk to for keeping the spirit of Appalachia alive
Gifted folks. My grandfather in Baptist Valley made moonshine but that was before my time. You could see parts of his old still by the spring till I was in my 20s. Walked by it many of times headed back up on the old ridge to hunt. After they cut those old oaks game kinda moved off of that old ridge. Thanks for that Cades cove story I love to drive through there with my kids and grand kids like mom did for us
I love the person to person old timer talks. Reminds me of my grandfather that grew up in the hills of West Virginia. He would really love your channel. Anyways godbless to yall.
Happy Friday Donnie...loved seeing this video. My Tennessee people were big on carving wood. I marveled at the chains that were carved...and the walking sticks made with carved balls inside that bounced as you moved it while walking...truely amazing. Take care Donnie and God bless you.😊
Wow!!! That's some fine carving! So delicate and precise, beautiful! My dad carved boots, he painted mostly but the head he carved of a figure he said was mom and he would have carved the rest of her body but he run out of wood, lol... he'd use for a joke! My dad was talented too! Those are very unique guns there, just wow! Very impressive, thanks Donnie everytime I get down in thought I turn to you! Thank you for coming through again for me, God's goodness is all over you in these trying times, I appreciate you and your videos to bring me out of this slump!!! God's grace is on you!
My husband and I love Cades Cove. That's where we like to go when we visit Tennessee. One time our church was having a yard sale and I found one of those dancing man toys. I don't know who made it I just thought it was something unique. Now it's not painted or carved near as good but somebody tried and I bet someones children played with it once. That was probably 25 years ago and it's still in my kids toy box. I never threw anything away and now it's my grandkids toy box full of old toys but new to them. My husband made the toy box 30 something years ago. Thanks for sharing your stories with us and God bless.
Oh, I love the toys! What a wonderful craft. I would buy something like those toys for me! Of course I'd have to let my grandbabies play with them, lol. All the things are something to charish.
What a beautiful video Donnie and the craft these men and women were doing good bless them all looking forward to watching many more of your videos may god bless you and yours ❤❤
Just loved this. Wish we had time these days to do some artful items. This world now is too fast, too busy, and missing out when it comes to learning to do anything much except electronics.
My grandpa made toys and musical instruments him and my uncle's and grandma would play them my cousin still have a bango he made we all from Georgia God bless you Donnie
Amazing ! Love the dancing man and wow...those miniature firearms, had it not have been for that quarter used for scale, they looked very realistic ! I love the mountains and have always had a special interest in the Appalachian culture. You know, this reminded me of a time when I lived in Oklahoma and come of my cousins came out to visit. We were all taken to a local theme park (the days before going to Disney land was only a dream to happen...one of them bought a toy tomahawk and I distinctly remember there was a tag on it that read, "Made by the Cherokees in Cherokee, NC" I also remember in Cherokee where the big bingo place is, used to be the facility where all of those toys were made. Now all of that stuff comes from China, sadly.
Amazing talents for sure. I like the little Winchester rifle. The handcrafting of the tools and the cabins reminds me very much of Richard Proenneke who built his own cabin by hand at Twin Lakes Alaska. A good majority of the population in this country these days have lost the grit and knowledge to fend for themselves let alone create anything from scratch. Those instruments look beautiful too, I am a Gibson guitar owner/ fan and I believe the heritage runs deep in the people in Nashville Tennessee still producing them in that region.
Another very interesting video I always appreciate the God gifted talent that people have didn’t learn it in any college so the people that have this type of talent are the real teachers in life if everyone would just realize it and find one of these talented people and learn from them they would never regret it and pass it on to their family and friends and the history behind it , Donnie thanks for sharing and take care.
Loved this, cousin Donnie! Thank you so much! Cades Cove is my wife's and my favorite place, and we're hoping to be up to another visit before the year's out. I had a lot of kinfolk in the Cove and the surrounding area, and just might be kin to John, himself. I know that I had a cousin in the Cove named Ruth Angeline Myers McCaulley. She's my 7th cousin twice removed, and she was married to a John McCaulley, so she might just be John's ancestor? I wish you and yours Shabbat Shalom, cousin Donnie. G-d bless you and yours, dear cousin, and please pray for the peace of Yerushalayim.
Hi Donnie, I have to say nothin gets me riled up more than to hear people call southern people no matter the state , to call them backward or ignorant !! With all the "rights" people yell and scream about over decades, I've often wondered why it hasn't been mentioned the down right prejudice that we southern folk have had to endure , calling us every degrading adjective in the book....As you can tell from my short rant...lol...I'll stand and defend southern folks way of life and their countless talents... Love your video as always. Maria 72 yrs old
Hello my friend. Thanks so much for sharing this. I feel the same way. It will never change no matter what. God bless you. I'm trying my best to show them otherwise.
My grandpa made dancing men. His had a long stick connected to the middle from the back to make him dance. My grandma played the dulcimer and sang Appalachian songs. They've both passed, but I have one of grandpa's dancing men and a dulcimer that belonged to grandma to help me remember them by.
I have a fiddle, mandolin, and dulcimer all handmade by my grandfather. He lived in Northeast Mississippi. It truly is a dying art.He made his own forms to bend the wood. Truky amazing to watch him work. He was in his seventies and nothing seemed to slow him down.

Thanks for that Cades cove story I love to drive through there with my kids and grand kids like mom did for us
Hello my friend. Thanks so much for sharing your memories. God bless you. Your very welcome.
I love the person to person old timer talks. Reminds me of my grandfather that grew up in the hills of West Virginia. He would really love your channel. Anyways godbless to yall.

JO JO IN VT 💞
Hello my friend. Thanks for sharing. God bless you. Your very welcome.
Happy Friday Donnie...loved seeing this video. My Tennessee people were big on carving wood. I marveled at the chains that were carved...and the walking sticks made with carved balls inside that bounced as you moved it while walking...truely amazing. Take care Donnie and God bless you.😊
Good morning. That's so awesome my friend. Thanks so much for sharing this. God bless you. Your very welcome.

WOW that's awesome my friend. That's a collector for sure. Thanks so much for sharing this. God bless you.
Oh, I love the toys! What a wonderful craft. I would buy something like those toys for me! Of course I'd have to let my grandbabies play with them, lol. All the things are something to charish.

Just loved this. Wish we had time these days to do some artful items. This world now is too fast, too busy, and missing out when it comes to learning to do anything much except electronics.

WOW that's amazing my friend. Thanks so much for sharing your memories. God bless you.
Awesome my friend. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Thank You!🙂

Another very interesting video I always appreciate the God gifted talent that people have didn’t learn it in any college so the people that have this type of talent are the real teachers in life if everyone would just realize it and find one of these talented people and learn from them they would never regret it and pass it on to their family and friends and the history behind it , Donnie thanks for sharing and take care.
WOW that's so true my friend. Thanks for sharing. God bless you.
WOW that's awesome my friend. His mom was a Myers. Thanks so much for sharing. God bless you.
Mount Mitchell is 6684 feet in the smokies is rhe highest point for those curious, another wonderful video Donnie

Good morning Donnie!
Good morning my friend.
My grandpa made dancing men. His had a long stick connected to the middle from the back to make him dance. My grandma played the dulcimer and sang Appalachian songs. They've both passed, but I have one of grandpa's dancing men and a dulcimer that belonged to grandma to help me remember them by.
WOW that's so awesome my friend. Thanks for sharing your memories. God bless you.
I didn't really appreciate my country family roots until I read the book Christy. It just brings their nettle truly home.
